Road Rash 3D Game by Electronic Arts Reviewed by Robby Cox koi@magicnet.net Save: Memory Card-1 block Released: 1998 Works with: Analog Controller **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: I bought this game because it was only $20. I thought that it might be cool, but I never bought it until it became one of those Greatest Hits discs. I'm a cheapskate, but is it worth the money? **************************************************************************** Gameplay Description: Road Rash 3D is motorcycle racing/head busting fun. In case you didn't know, Road Rash is a motorcycle racing/fighting game. That's right, you race as you bust heads. This combination is a lot of fun. You race for first and then you receive money depending on how you finish the race. You get the most money for first, second, or third. You also receive money for finishing worse, but it's just a little bit. Once you do well enough you can buy new motorcycles and move up to level 2. On level 2, the tracks are harder. This is pretty cool, but level 2 is really tough. I don't mean the second track. I mean the second batch of tracks. You'll understand when you play. There are also single races and time trials. When you finish a race, you get to watch a FMV cinema. These range from rather funny(when you get arrested and the cop does a body cavity search) to rather stupid(some of the cinemas look like they belong on the Sega CD or 3DO). This can be overlooked because this is not the meat of the game. Anyways, busting heads as you race is a lot of fun. Liked: Cool racing action. Hated: Level 2 is pretty tough. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: This game looks nice. The motorcycles and landscapes look great. This game is made up of some rather detailed polygons. The riders are rather blocky and the ground textures are some of the worst that I have seen. Not the road textures, mind you, but the ground on the side of the roads. The riders have been motion-captured and it shows. When a rider hits a car it is awesome. They look like they were really hit by a car. Liked: Cool graphics. Hated: Horrible ground textures. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: This game rocks. I mean that literally. The music is made up of some great songs from some big bands. The songs are from bands such as Sugar Ray, Civ, The Mermen, The Tea Party, Kid Rock, and Full On The Mouth. There are several songs by each artist except Kid Rock. He only has one song of this game "Somebody's Gotta Feel This". This is by far the best song on this game. I normally don't care for Kid Rock, but this song is cool. Some of the other stuff you may have heard inlcudes Sugar Ray's 'Mean Machine" and "Sweet Home California". The sound fx are great and are in Surround Sound. My only complaint about the sound is that the sound fx are a little too overpowering and that makes the music kinda tough to hear. You can change that in the options, though. Liked: Awesome music. Hated: Nothing. **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: The controls are very good. They are reallistic and mirror what controlling a motorcycle should be. The fighting controls are easy but have some lag. You push the button and then in a second or two your rider will respond. This doesn't affect your vehicle controls, but fighting is a drag. The game design is great. Liked: Good controls. Hated: Lag in the fighting. **************************************************************************** Improve: Fix the lag in the fighting and how about some better graphics. RIYL: other Road Rash games, Road Rash 64(I'm really looking forward to that one) **************************************************************************** Final Words: Road Rash 3D is an excellent game for the price($20). If you like racing games, you should check it out. It's a lot of fun. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: ***** Graphics: ***** Sound/Music: ***** Play Control/Game Design: **** Personal Opinion: **** Total: 23 out of 25 Final Score: 92 % **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: None.
