LETTING GO

I counted out the days, lined them in a row,
to see if they were going anywhere.
I packed away the problems, to set outside the door.
Tomorrow's wind will free them in the air.
I emptied out the closet, of all those faded frocks.
They no longer fit me anyway.
I cleaned out all the drawers, except for special books.
I'll give away a few of them each day.

Chorus
Growing up and growing older, has a need for letting go
when, like a transferred soldier, you've got to hit the Road.
You can't take all the trouble, you must lighten up the load,
or else you're sure to stumble, and passage will be slowed.

Keep mementos of the highlights. Discard the young mistakes.
Everyone must sift and sort that way.
It's worth the extra effort, and extra time it takes,
so the Journey will go smoother day-by-day.
Pass on to those who need them, the leavings that have worth.
Add a little blessing when you can.
Recycle any empties, for which recycle works,
and join the ranks of Time's advancing Band.

Chorus
Growing up and growing older, has a need for letting go,
when like a transferred soldier, you've got to hit the Road.
You can't take all the trouble. You must lighten up the load,
or else you're sure to stumble, and passage will be slowed.
We've got to know - the art of letting go.
