As you may or not know, we spent three years in South Africa, so here are a few things we picked up about the local lingo!

South African terminology for the uninitiated:

Dop - Drink as in "Hey boet are you coming for a dop?"

Braai - BBQ South African style. Like a BBQ anywhere else except by the time the food is cooked everyone has had so many dops cardboard would taste good!

Chop 'n dop - What you take to a braai (food and drink).

Bliksem (pronounced blucksome) - I can only assume this will involve pain be inflicted on someone. Normally used along the line of Llewellyn saying to me "Listen boet, if you don't stop taking the piss out of me I'm going to bliksem you!"

Dof - Stupid. Often heard in the dealing room "Where's the dof Aussie?"

Poes (pronounced puss like cat) - Must be rude as all the women cover their ears!

Dors - Thirsty (why does so much relate to drinking?).

Moffie/Trassie - Poof - Someone who doesn't drink.

Lekker - Really good - Castle Larger is an example of a lekker drink.

Kak - Crap or really bad - The Northern Bulls, a local rugby team, was an example of a kak team this year - Sorry Jan.

Bakkie - The local term for a ute/pick up.

Soutpiel - An Englishman - Literally translated is "salt dick" meaning he has one foot in England and one foot in South Africa, which leaves his dick in the sea...

Rooinek - Also an Englishman - Means red neck from sunburn.

Boerewors - Farmers sausage - A local delicacy that once eaten should form part of any braai anywhere in the world.

Biltong - Dried meat - A must!

Venison - Meat from any antelope.

Potjie - A stew of meat and vegetables, slow cooked. Once again a must.

Cherry - An attractive young lady.

Gatvol - Had enough - Pissed off.

Babbelaas - Hung over.

Snotklap - To bliksem someone very hard.

Boet - Brother - Like Lebanese cousin.

Some drinking terms to be afraid of:

One for the roadblock - You are going to have many more drinks before you leave.

ABF - Absolute Bloody Final - You are in serious trouble now as the establishment will either have to run out of what you are drinking or close before you can escape.

WS - Wife Spiter - The very last drink (contributed by "Mad" Andy).
