What a fantastic weekend, WOW; talk about hectic!

Marianne & myself arrived at Brize Norton in the early evening of Friday 5th June. After getting ourselves sorted we went to a little village pub The Rose & Crown at Shilton . Flt Lt Mark Dover had advised me that he would be there with 3 of the boys of 624Squadron at about 7pm, he had a table booked for 7.30. Had it not have been for the landlord knowing Mark, I would have thought we were at the wrong place. Apparently there had been some traveling difficulties and things were running a little late, however the minibus arrived with Flt Lt Dover assisted by W/O Matt Dillon, Senior Aircraftsmen Colin Pratt-Hooson & Gary Hambly of 4624(RAAF)Squadron. With them were Ken Pierce & wife Joan and John (Bert) Le-Pine & wife Jean. After the introductions and through the meal I really enjoyed talk to this foursome and hearing some of the their experiences. A little later Colin Ogilvie & his wife Ella arrived, they had just experienced a 14 hour coach journey from Scotland. After finishing eating & a few drinks we were invited back to the "SWAMP" ("Sanctuary for Worn Out Movements Personnel")for more drinks at some point we stopped talking, the night ended and we retired.

The following morning we started a hectic schedule by being at the "SWAMP" about 9.30 in order to meet the others hopefully with a little time to talk. Joining us on this day were George Messenger & wife Betty, Jack White & granddaughter Shazio, Stanley David  & son Simon, Walter Hughes, Peter James Brian & Francis Berrigan, Ian & Jeff Denness and (making the trip all the way from Darlington at the grand young age of 89) Les Povey.

The feel of the comradeship really came through and Wing Commander Bob Dixon made a wonderful welcoming speech  which really showed what great esteem these Unsung Heroes are held in by the new squadron that carries on their number. The only thing missing during the morning session was time, there were not just enough minutes in the hour to recall the many incidents that these men hold.

After lunch in the Junior Ranks Mess we all boarded the mini-busses and headed for Moreton-in-Marsh for a visit to the Wellington Museum. This museum is a very interesting visit for anyone interested in wartime aviation and more can be found by following the link in our links page. One problem is that the museum is small so our party had to split into two groups whilst one was in the museum the others were having a look round the village or (as the story was told later) like Les Povey, in one of the local pubs, drinking his Guinness. The story says that as the landlord pulled the pint at about two thirds the keg ran out, whilst away changing the keg, Les was getting thirsty, so raised himself from his seat, walked to the bar, picked up the unfinished pint and duly took it back to his table. When the barman came back he said to the lads ordering, "where's that pint I was pulling", "over there" they said pointing to Les, "Oh he'd better have another then, I don't fancy trying to get that one off him" said the barman. According to legend Les Povey has not altered over 55 years on.

Following this visit we returned to the "SWAMP" for afternoon tea & cakes provided by the members & wives of 4624 Squadron and more chats, then time for a quick wash & brush up before returning again for the evening session.

This was a wonderful evening, a superb buffet laid on by members & wives of 4624  Squadron, more time to get to know each other a game of "Play Your Cards Right" & a Team Quiz. All this and drinks at Mess prices made it a real Day To Remember. I was tired, Marianne was shattered, but the boys of 624 still manage to display the stamina they displayed 56 years before. They all say that they were not Heroes they were just doing a job.

But to me and many more they will always be OUR Unsung Heroes of 624, and I can now look forward to meeting them again in 2001, along with some of those that sent apologies this year. I now feel that I really know some of the men who served along with my uncle and have been able to thank them personally for providing information & memories to build this site. I'm only responsible for putting it together, This Truly is Their Site, in their Honour.

See you all next year
