THE COX FAMILY

Generation 1

The Cox family traces its roots to Culpeper County, in
Central Virginia. It was there that James and Anna Cocks had a
son named John, born in 1753. By the time of the American Revolution,
John was living in Nash County, North Carolina, in the northeastern part
of the state. There, he was drafted into the colonial militia. He later
settled in Anson County, North Carolina, on the border with South
Carolina.

In 1835, when he was 82 years old, he received a pension for his
military service. Documents related to the pension show that, unlike
his parents, he spelled the family name "COX".

John married February 4, 1780, in Nash County, to Elizabeth,
daughter of John and Sarah Portis. She died in Anson County,
October 9, 1836, and John died only six days later. They had
