Mr. B. H. Crowder is taken away by Death!

Former Register of Deeds and Beloved Citizen of Wadesboro Passes Away at His Home Sunday Night.

A cause of general sorrow throughout out Anson County and vicinity was the death of Benjamin Henry Crowder, venerable and beloved resident of Wadesboro, who succumbed at his home at 11:20 o’clock Sunday night after a long period of failing health. He was nearly 81 years in of age, having been born on November 26, 1860. Having lived this span of years in this community with the general approval of his fellow men and therefore, we are assured, in the loving grace of his Creator.

Mr. Crowder was a son of the late William Crowder and Mrs. Sarah Henry Crowder, both members of substantial and highly esteemed families. Surviving Mr. Crowder, are his beloved wife, who was formerly Miss Ida Murr; one daughter, Miss Pauline Crowder, of Concord; two sons, W. Murr Crowder and B. H. Crowder, Jr., both of Wadesboro, and one sister, Mrs. Lydia Hough, of Durham.

In his lifetime, Mr Crowder served very acceptably in several positions, including both public and private responsibilities. He was elected register of deeds of Anson County in 1916 and continued to hold this office very worthily for ten years. After this he accepted the office of County accountant, keeping this post from April 1927 to April 1931, when he retired, yielding to the infirmities of age. A few years later when he sustained a stroke which was the beginning of his last illness.

The funeral was held in the Wadesboro Methodist church, of which Mr. Crowder was a loyal and sincere member, at 2:30 O’clock, Tuesday afternoon. The Pastor, Rev. Chas. P. Bowles conducted the service in the presence of a large congregation who placed many floral tributes of unusual beauty upon the casket. Pall bearers were: J. M. Austin, H. V. D. Clark, H. P. Taylor, J. F. Allen, P. J. kiker and Lester Allen. Among the honorary pall bearers were C. C. Uren, I. C. Phifer, J. C. Jones, Hal Little, F. E. Liles, R. S. Pruette, F. E. Thomas and G. K. Craig.


This article was found in the papers of Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hough Hall, my Mother. The date of Nov. 13, 1941 was written across the top of the article. I can only assume that this article was written by a local area paper.
