Roy Dupuis confides "I'm not afraid to grow old"
Roy Dupuis is back in Québec. After more than 4 years of repeated coming/going for the series Nikita, he has rediscovered a new life rhythm closer to his own aspirations. He's rediscovered his universe, his entourage and most important, he's found himself again. Radiating and calm, the comedian recently took part in the Défi-Vision (a competition presented by the Mira foundation), and answered our questions freely.
Roy, your participation in Nikita is it really over and done with?
Yes, all I have left to do is the dubbing for Québec and France.
Was it a good experience?
(hesitating) Yes..
Why do you hesitate?
Four years, it's a long time. It's many years of my life, a lot of coming/going but the gang was fun so it was worth doing it.
What are your projects, other than your involvment in the series Le dernier chapitre which will be on bikers?
I know this series was announced but I haven't signed anything yet. I can't say any more on the subject except that it should concretise itself.
Since your return to Québec, did you enjoy your home in the country?
Sincerely, that's all I've been doing.
How do you intend to pass the summer?
I'm gonna work on my house. I'm in the process of renovating and adding an addition, I want a big room kind of like a "barn" or a small "chapel". I say a barn to describe the "ambiance" that I want to create. Since my house is very old and doesn't have any big rooms, I felt like having a big space with big windows. I want this space to give the impression of the outside inside.
Do you keep animals there?
No except for my dogs and my cat
What have you done since your return from Toronto? Did you travel?
I took the Winter off. I didn't move around because I've been doing it for a while now. My gilfriend was working so we couldn't go anywhere. We arranged it so that we could spend some time together. The last five years, between us, it's been on/off like we say in english. We would see each other on the weekend. So, last Winter, my main activity was to spend time with my people (friends, family).
These get togethers felt good?
Yes, absolutely!
Do you have the feeling that you found yourself? When moving around so much, we lose ourselves easily.
This Winter, I really adopted a new rhythm. I decided to take time for me and forget the profession milieu and to only think about what I felt like doing day to day, to make a void, kind of letting the dust settle down! I let go of all the stuff that happened the last few years to see where I was going.
And towards what do you want to go?
I'm going to start with making the addition to my house. Then, maybe the series Le dernier chapitre. After, I'll see.
Do you lean towards working more intensely in Québec?
That's for sure. I like it here. I love Québec. It's my home. When I leave for a long time, it's clear that I miss it.
What or who do you miss the most?
My people, my land, my house. but I also miss what we are. We are very particular. Only us speak like we speak. Only us say the things like we say them. So, only the people from "here" can"talk" to me.
With all the subtilities that it involves.
Yes, in fact, only the people from here can really "talk" to me, in our words, in our humour, with our ideas, our culture. All this, I don't find it anywhere else.
Do you think you're disconnected from yourself when you're gone for a long time?
No, on the contrary. I think it's very good to go somewhere else to really appreciate where you come from. It's only while travelling that we can do it. I also think that it's very good to know the world, to see other things, to smell and taste. I love to travel, and I have an urge to do it. Presently, the Himalayas are very tempting for the culture and the mountains. I also would like to visit Nepal and Vietnam, before it's too late. It could be possible that I go work somewhere else at one point but one thing is certain, I'll always come back to Québec.
Do you realize that your house has given you an anchor you didn't have before?
Yes. Many events have happened since I've had my house. All that anchored me, took root, made me responsible. Finally, becoming an adult means to be responsible for the actions you make. When I say actions, I also mean words.
Have you become responsible to the point of having the urge to have a child?
Yes, It's in the air. My girlfriend and me are leaning towards it more and more.
Since when have you been together?
It's been a while. almost seven years.
How old are you?
Thirty-eight? I was born in 1963 in April; yes, that's it, 38.
The fact that you are getting older, does it scare you?
No, on the contrary. At 33, I experienced a nostalgia of youth. Then, I decided to stop drinking and I became more responsible (laughter).
Isn't it at 33 that you started some kind of therapy?
Yes, it's a psychanalyse.
Do you still do it?
Yes, I'm continuing it. I stopped my consultations during the time of Nikita because of my schedule but this Winter I started again to get things in perspective.
What do you get out of it?
In my opinion, everyone should do a psychanalyse. It should be as normal as going to the dentist or the hospital. It should be free. Sincerely, it's something that could change the world.
Why?
Because psychanalyse makes everything clearer. It enables you to see what's yours and what our parents taught us. The first 3 years of our existence are very important because they determine the way we will negociate our life, with situations in which we'll find ourselves in. It's like if we had enemies and we didn't know they existed. We all have enemies that are within us and that make life difficult. In us, there is also good caracters that help us. in short, psychanalyse helps us identify our enemies. And, when we see them, we can then negociate with them.
To get rid of them?
We won't necessarily get rid of them but we can "deal" with them because, from now on, we know them and we know why they exist.
Do you feel you are talking too personnal can you tell us what your enemies are?
Now that's too personnal. But, I can say that psychanalyse is the best trip I've taken. it's a trip through my whole life. It's fascinating.
For what reasons?
There are important events that happened, that you completely forget and that we rediscover through psychanalyse. It helps you to remember that and that in itself is extraordinary! It's the best gift that I've given myself.
Did it permit you to reconnect with yourself?
Better than that. Because of that, I've learned to know what I love and not what was suppose to be loved. You also learn to know the human mecanisms in general, which isn't bad for my kind of work. You have to be curious to do a psychanalyse, you have to want it. You have to love life to do it. You have to love the human. All that to be more present, more abandonned towards life.
Since you're more conscious about the first three years being decisive in human development, are you affrait of becoming a father?
No. I think I am starting the process to prevent mistakes, to be a more attentive father, more abandonned with my child.
What kind of father do you think you'll be?
I have no idea. I want to keep it a surprise. One thing is certain, I really don't want to be a dotting father. The society of consumation it's enough! I will let my child make his own path and I will try and be there for him all the way..
