When Roy plays the part of Michael, the cold-blooded, emotionless killer in Nikita, you believe him straight away. He is not just some actor, he had a solid education. "I went to the famous Canadian National Theatre School and studied for four years. A friend of mine went to do an audition, but at the last moment he decided not to go and I went in his place. And I got it!"
Not that he always thought of becoming an actor. 'When I was still at school I loved physics, chemistry, math's - that's what I wanted to do. Then I went to the movie Moliere, I was so impressed that I dropped chemistry the next day and did theatre. And I never looked back!"
Before Nikita (or La Femme Nikita, as it is called in the USA) he had built a good reputation. He played in the movies Screamers, Hemoglobin, Free Money, Jesus Of Montreal, Emilie, Chilie's Blues Waiting for Michelangelo, J'en suis, and Passage of free men.
The acting doesn't run in the family
Roy doesn't quite know how he got the love for acting. No, it doesn't exactly run in the family. "I have an older sister and a younger brother, and they both do something completely different. My father was a salesman, that's why he traveled a lot and why we moved a few times, and my mother is a piano teacher. She's the closest to it"
Meanwhile Roy doesn't know different and would never want to do anything different. Not hard to believe once you scored the part of Michael in Nikita. It's not easy if that's what you expect. "A normal working day? Well, I can tell you it's long. Usually I get up at 5.30 a.m., jump in the shower and then someone picks me up at 6 a.m. At the set I have some fruit and cappuccino. Then hair and make-up, and I put on my black clothes. Shootings usually until around 10 p.m. Then I go home, and go through the scenes for the next day. While I fall asleep, haha."
I can understand Michael myself
In real life Roy is more outspoken than his cold-blooded character Michael: "I think that our characters are miles apart. Like Michael I'm more of a thinker then a talker, but next to that we're not exactly alike. I can understand Michael myself. You have to understand that his only goal is to survive in Section One. And it's easier if he keeps his emotions inside. And concentrates. So he is always sharp and does or says nothing that's not absolutely necessary. He is very intelligent and that's what I like about him. And also the mystery. Another difference between the two gentlemen: Michael may have been married twice, Roy is not going to. "I don't believe in marriage. Originally it had a religious reason, so you can make love under the eyes of God. Nowadays it's sort of a contract, political and economical. And I just don't feel like bringing a relationship back to a piece of paper. I am very loyal when it comes to love, but I don't need a wedding for that".
Well, if that isn't good news…
