In the beginning....

Hi. My name is Jodee Bayert, I'm the creator of the Rudegirl Mafia page. How did I come up with this idea, you ask? Well, gather 'round, kiddies, and I'll tell ya. It all started when I was at a show. I was there to have a good time, see, and I was... that is until I "overheard" a conversation between two other girls that were standing behind me. I'm sure you've heard the same exact conversation before.... "Ohmigod, what a slut," "Did you see what she's wearing?," "What a f@#*in' poseur..," that sort of thing. The girls didn't even know their gossip victim's name! I couldn't believe that they had come to this show and destroyed the integrity of the scene there just so they could cut this poor clueless creature down to size. I began to realize that the concept of unity didn't even exist to these girls. Frankly, I was worried. I decided that I had to take action instead of just sitting there, because this wasn't the first time I had heard this sort of thing, and I was fed up. So what do I do? I thought about doing a zine, but the astronomical costs of nation(or world!)wide distribution stopped that idea dead in it's tracks. Then it hit me... a webpage can be seen all around the world, and thanks to Tripod it doesn't cost a red cent. Now, I've set up a page to promote rudegirl culture and unity. My sister, Lauren Bayert, is my co-conspirator, she didn't help with the page design at all, but she did help me with the content and she is gonna be the model in my fashion section. I take pride in my rudeness, and I take pride in my femininity. I want this site to help all of you take pride in yourself, your scene, and your tolerance of other people. Our Goal....

The Rudegirl Mafia wants to provide an information source about rudegirl culture, as well as a place for rudegirls to contact one another. The way I see it, if all you girls have a way to talk and get to know each other on neutral grounds, you will be helping yourselves and others to realize the power of unity. I want the Mafia to spread a message of tolerance and help girls to overcome their preconcieved ideas and notions. It begins with you. This page is just here to help you along.

What is Rudegirl Culture?
Ok... I kind of improvised this term, but it serves the idea behind it very well. Rudegirl Culture is a part of the ska music subculture, unique to it's female followers. The term encompasses our beliefs, our attitudes, who we are, what we do, and our fashion. Rudegirls actually have a slightly different subculture all their own, kind of like skins and mods do, still a part of the ska subculture, but unique to us. That, my friends, is rudegirl culture.

Why make a page just for girls?
Why make a page just for rudegirls? Aren't rudeboys and rudegirls in the same subculture? Well... here's how it is. I think that the girls have a different image than the boys. For instance, rudeboys pretty much have a dress code.. suits, those 1-inch ties, Freds, Bens, porkpies... The rudeboy also has an unfortunate stereotype. Rudegirls however, don't really have a dress code, and right now, we don't have a stereotype. We need to prevent stereotyping by tastefully expressing our individuality and taking pride in the term "rudegirl." That means when the ska boom passes, we stick around, even if everyone else is running off to buy themselves a pair of vinyl pants.

Why name the page "Rudegirl Mafia"?
The page is named after the Cicilian Mafia. The mafia is a big family. Not a family in a lovey-huggy type way, but in a you-mess-with-my-brother-you're-gonna-get-a-cap-in-your-ass sort of way. The mafia is large, widespread, a bunch of people all over the world, all doing different things under the same name. I wanted this page and it's members to have the same attitude: Don't mess with our sisters, and don't mess with us. We watch out for each other.

Why isn't there any music info or band links?
This site is devoted entirely to rudegirl culture and scene unity. It is one of the few sites on the internet that is, and we try to save our links page for other rudegirl culture sites. You can type "ska" in a search engine, and get more ska info than you'll be able to handle. Genereal ska and band info isn't our department. If that's what you want, go look at the Ska FAQ or something. When you come to this page, we assume you already have a good grip on ska music and a fair grip on the ska subculure.
