If you’re thinking of buying a Land Rover
for restoration, it is essential that you work out a personal budget
– a maximum that you would want to spend in total. Knowing this
limit, together with the asking price of the vehicle, a note should
be made of the estimated cost of restoring the Land Rover you’re
inspecting to the standard you require. And make sure you
over-estimate the cost of restoration to avoid difficulties later
on. If restoration costs plus purchase price exceed the budget
figure, then it may be time to review the purchase price or consider
an alternative example.
By doing research beforehand on the cost of
replacement parts and the labour involved, you will save both time
and money later. Then, while inspecting a vehicle of your choice,
following the guidelines set out later in these pages, you can
methodically make a note of each and every fault and work out a
rough guide to the cost of parts. You will also have a fairly
thorough idea of what needs tackling for the restoration, enabling
you to sit down later and decide on the “running order” of
tasks.
Before going along to see any Land Rover,
get as much information as possible by phone, bearing in mind that
many vendors will exaggerate the condition of their vehicles
enormously! Asking lots of questions over the phone will save time
ultimately however, though it is a good idea to look at several Land
Rovers before you start the buying procedure, simply to get a
“feel” for what sort of questions you need to ask. |
