The Land Rover’s clutch is a heavy-duty unit that is built to
last and should give little trouble. A “slipping” clutch normally
indicates that replacement is necessary, while a “juddering”
clutch can point to other defects in the drive-line, such as worn or
loose engine mountings and/or worn propeller shaft universal joints or
could stem from a small amount of oil on the clutch plate. A one-off
freak or (more likely) a leaking oil seal? The clutch plate is quite
easily replaced by separating the gearbox from the engine and moving
the box rearward as far as it will go. This leaves sufficient room to
enable clutch replacement to be carried out.
