Check the condition of the swivel housings.
They are chrome plated and should be clean and free from pitting; if
badly pitted, they will be useless and costly to replace, both in time
and parts. Some leakage from the housing seal is to be expected, but
signs of excessive oil loss could mean worn swivel pins. These are
visible from underneath and behind the wheels, emerging from a housing
onto which the brake back plate is fitted; when the axle is safely
jacked up (do not go beneath the vehicle), they can be checked by
firmly grasping the top of the tyre and moving it sharply in and out.
Some movement is acceptable but, if excessive, this usually indicates
worn swivel pins or bearings. If this movement stops when you apply
the brakes, then check out your bearings as the swivels are probably
working well.
