Tim Meeker- The narrator, he is fourteen at the beginning of the story. Tim greatly admires his older brother and longs to be more involved in the excitement and danger of the war.
Sam Meeker- Tim's older brother, he is sixteen at the beginning of the story. Sam's father thinks he is headstrong. Sam is often at odds with his father. Sam is a Yale student, and he leaves school to fight the rebel cause and is ultimately framed as a cattle theif and is shot publicly by General Putnam's soldiers.
Eliplalet Meeker- Eliphalet Meeker is the father to Sam and Tim, he is the owner of the Meeker Tavern. Mr. Meeker wants nothing to do with the war and is angry at Sam for participating in the war. He is loyalist.
Susannah Meeker- Susannah Meeker is mother to Sam and Tim, she is very religious and a hard worker. She is a loyalist.
Betsy Read- Sam's girlfriend and is the daughter of Colonel Read, a well-known local patriot. Betsy Read is bold, a nosy teenage girl, very loyal to Sam and to the Rebel cause, even though she is forbidden to get involved.
Colonel Read- Betsy's grand-father, he is a strong and aging patriot. Once a colonel he was for the rebels.
Mr Beech- An elderly, loyal reverend. Mr. Beech is a friend of father (Sam's father). Mr Beech is a loyalist.
Mr. Heron- A wealthy and somewhat shadowy local character, he says to be a tory but to my opinion he is also a rebel. Also Mr. Heron is real.
Tom Warrups- A Native American Indian living on Colonel Read's land, who also allows Sam to hide out in his teepee.
Jerry Sanford- A young local boy and a friend of Tim's he is captured by the British and dies. He is thrown to the bottome of the ocean and sinks.
Benedict Arnold- He was a captain for Sam and his fellow troops. He may have been a good friend of George Washington; notwithstanding, he could be considered the biggest traitor in the history of forever's eternity.
General Putnam- Putnam's first name was Isreal. He was the leader of the rebels. General Putnam wants to make an example of some of his soldiers by executing them in some form. He does this to show the other soldiers what will happen if they bend the strict rules. He virtually forces Sam to death.
Colonel Parson- An officer in Redding (The Meekers' hometown). He is a nicer than General Putnam. Tim goes to talk with Col. Parson so Tim can try dissuade General Putnam to kill Sam.
Mr. Platt- Uncle of Sam and Tim. They live in a town called Danburry.
Ezekial Platt- Cousin of Sam and Tim in Salem. Their father (Mr. Platt) hosts Father and Tim to Verplanks point (a place where they go every year to sell cattle. Father ususally goes with Tom Warrups or Sam, but he takes Tim this year beacaue Tom is busy and Sam is at war.)
Captain Betts- A patriot who gets captured and released by the British.
Captain Starr- A local patriot who gets captured and released by the British, whose name is Daniel Starr.
Mr. Rogers- A local patriot who is killed by the British. The man's name is Amos Rogers, but is associated by his title, Mr..
Ned- A negro slave of Sam Smith. Sometimes associated as "Negro Ned." Ned's head is cut off by the British.
Sam Smith- A caucasian man who's slave (Ned) is killed by the British.
Dr. Hobart- The Redding doctor. He cured Many people both injured and severely injured.
Jon Smith- A rebel man who was going to be hung and killed by Gen. Putnam's command.
Edward Jones- A town, rebel butcher who was going to be hung and killed by Gen. Putnam's order.
General Silliman- A general for the patriots.
General Wooster- A general for the patriots.
Judson- A man who is an escort in Ridgbury. He helped save Tim and his father from the Cow Boys in Verplanks Point.
Cow Boys- A group of men associated as the Cow Boys. These men are really cattle thiefs. They can be encountered on a route to Verplanks Point. Anyone that crosses over are likely to give away their cattle to the Cow Boys. These men claim that they are patriots.
