These photos(slides) were taken by Ralph Back, Eagan, MN. I was lucky enough to meet him at the 1999 Santa Fe Railway Historical & Modeling Society Convention in Denver. He mentioned he had several slides taken at Milby Street Facility in Houston, late 60's early 70's. Once I saw them, I asked him for permission to show the slides here, since the majority of the photos I show here were taken at the same location nearly 30 years later.

The location is no longer an engine facility. It originally was owned by Houston Belt & Terminal (which was formed like most large cities, by all the railroads in the area, to handle traffic within the city). After it got down to only two (BNSF & UP), they decided to divide up the properties all around Houston. As luck would have it, UP took Milby. They didn't need it for servicing engines so are using it for other things. Back when Ralph was taking his pictures, this was the only place for Santa Fe to store and maintain their engines. After the merger, you could find BN and BNSF there also. It was an easy to get to location, and photograph from (new location is almost impossible to take photographs).
