APPLICATION CONSIDERATIONS
Before applying to college, each student is expected
to have thoroughly researched each of the colleges to
which he intends to send an application. Although the
College Advisers cannot dictate the number of
colleges a student will apply to, we strongly
recommend that each student limit his applications to
between 6 - 10 colleges.
Each year, early in the June before the sixth
form, the College Advisers send a letter to each
student reviewing the list of colleges under
consideration. The College Selection List is intended
to give each student an idea of the likelihood of his
admissibility at each institution. The list is the
culmination of the discussions between the student
and the College Adviser, and is intended to reflect
the full range of colleges to which boys are
encouraged to apply.
The Rhythm of the Process
For each Hill student, the college process
officially begins in January of the fifth form year.
At that time, students are required to attend a group
session in which the nature of the process is
outlined. Younger students are welcome to make use of
the services provided by the College Advisersí
Office, and they are encouraged to visit the office
at their convenience. As well, during the fourth form
year, the College Advisers conduct special seminar
sessions to introduce students to the office
personnel. Topics such as Decision Making and Career
Planning serve as ìfood for thoughtî as these
younger students plan their Hill School careers.
Group 10 information
Designed to introduce the student to a range of
self-assessment issues, Group 10 meetings are
conducted in the early stages of the process. Because
the groups are relatively small, the boys are able to
freely share their ideas and experiences, and they
learn a great deal from one another. Together, they
are introduced to the plethora of considerations in
choosing a college, and they use this information as
a foundation for the work they do individually. In
Group 10 meetings issues such as: personal strengths
and liabilities, size of college, and type of
institution are considered for the first time.
Individual Consultations
In the spring of the fifth form year, each student
is assigned a college adviser with whom he will meet
for personal consultations. A minimum number of
meetings will be determined by the college adviser,
but the student may initiate as many meetings as he
would like. In the fall, sixth formers again begin a
series of scheduled personal meetings with their
college adviser. As in the spring, the student may
meet with the college adviser as often as he feels
necessary, but he will be expected to attend a number
of required individual sessions.

VISIT POLICY
Each Sixth Former, when legitimate need is
present, will be allowed five academic days
away from campus for the purpose of visiting
colleges (Wednesday and Saturday count as
full academic days). A student must complete
a College Visit Request Form in the College
Advisersí Office, after scheduling an
appointment with the college, two weeks in
advance of the intended college visit. The
form must be signed by each of the studentís
teachers, coaches, and dorm parents before
approval will be granted. Teachers may forbid
absences from class if a student is not in
good standing in the course.
Students may not take more than three
academic days in a row to visit colleges
(this would include combining college days
with weekend privileges), and no more than
two visits to the same college or university
will be approved by the College Advisers.
Productive use of vacation and school
holidays for the purpose of visiting colleges
is highly recommended by the College
Advisers. No requests will be accepted after
May 1, the National Candidates Reply Date.
