GLOSSARY OF TERMS

ACT - American College Testing Program (composed of four sections: reading, English, math, and science reasoning). Each Hill Student is encouraged to take this test in the spring of the fifth form year.

ACH - Formerly the Achievement Tests, now SAT-II. Most boys will be expected to take at least three of these tests.

AP - Advanced Placement program. Students enrolled in courses designed as AP are entitled to sit for exams in the spring. Scored on a 1-5 scale, many colleges grant course credit for scores of 3 or above.

CB - The College Board, oversees the SAT program, the AP program, and the College Financial Aid Profile Application. For SAT information: (609) 771-7600.

CEEB - College Entrance Exam Board. The Hill Schoolís CEEB code must appear on each studentís SAT registration. The code is: 394080.

CSS - College Scholarship Service is a multi Data Entry service that provides student the means to apply for federal, state, and/or institutional financial aid.

EA - Early Action admission policy. A student admitted under this policy is not committed to attend.

ED - Early Decision admission policy. A student admitted under this policy must attend the institution unless the financial aid award is insufficient.

EFC - Expected family contribution of the financial aid package as determined by federal and/or institutional methodology.

ETS - Educational Testing Service, the Princeton, New Jersey based agency that administers the SAT for the College Board.

FAFSA - The financial aid form required of all students who are applying for Federal Title IV scholarship money (e.g. Pell grants, Stafford loans). These forms are sent directly to all students who have taken the SAT prior to December, and are also available in the College Advisersí Office.

GPA - Grade point average, determined by The Hill School. Colleges sometimes re-compute the grade point average using their own criteria; (for example, the may not include art, religion, or music classes in the gpa).

NMSQT - National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT), used to determine National Merit award winners.

NCAA - National Collegiate Athletic Association administers all college athletic programs. The NCAA uses the Clearing House to determine eligibility for all Division I and II athletes.

NACAC - National Association for College Admissions Counseling, the national organization that establishes procedures, ethics, and standards. All of the College Advisers at The Hill School are members of this organization.

PSAT - Preliminary Scholastic Abilities Test, taken at The Hill each year in the fall of the fifth form year.

SAT - Scholastic Abilities Test, usually taken three times by each Hill student. Testing dates may differ for each individual, but most student will take the exam in January and May of the fifth form year, and once again in October or November of the sixth form year.

SDQ - Student Descriptive Questionnaire found in the SAT registration packet. The information requested is voluntary, but responding to the questionnaire will generate college admissions publications.

TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language is taken by international students at designated test centers. The test is offered twice each year at The Hill, in October and April Competitive colleges will expect a score of 600 or better on the test.
