WALKING -
December 1999 WHEN MEGAN MET SEAN by John Stark Not since Fred and Ethel Mertz has there been a more attention-getting pair of sidekicks than Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes of "Will & Grace." The teamwork that takes place between these Bonnie and Clyde of scene-stealers has been generating all kinds of media attention, from Entertainment Weekly, which dubbed them TV's hottest sidekicks, to Saks Fifth Avenue, which flew them to New York for a fashion spread by Patrick Demarchelier for a fall issue of Vogue. As Karen, assistant to Grace (Debra Messing), and as Jack, best friend of Will (Eric McCormack), the sidekicks make for pretty strong presences on their own. But when their scenes are with each other, be it a strip poker game in a mountain cabin or evil charades (sworn to silence, Karen acts out a juicy piece of gossip for Jack about Grace's sex life), it's gin meets tonic. "Working with Sean has been one of those great gifts from the gods," says Mullally. "We're really in sync. Our timing doesn't have to be worked on. It verges on the supernatural." "That's totally true, and with our off-camera relationship, too," says Hayes. "From the moment we met at our first table reading, we just kinda started this crazy relationship. We feed off each other tremendously. We love each other so much." As for how Hayes sees Jack's relationship to Karen: "I think Jack is Karen's closest friend," he says. "It's an odd friendship, almost sexual in nature. We've done everything on the air but have intercourse." |
