MARCELLA'S ELVIS MEMORIES
Elvis Memories by Marcella Allen
Here's my personal memory:
When I was 6 years old I discovered Elvis! Oh, my was he handsome! And when he would sing my knees would quiver! (or at least they seemed to!) Elvis was my very first crush, even before Eric Estrada and Shaun Cassidy, and certainly before David Campbell, my first crush on a "real" boy. And to make this crush even more special, I shared it with my mom.
You see, Mom is only 18 years older than me, and when she was a young girl and teenager, Elvis was becoming the legend he already was when I was a young girl. She was the one I watched Elvis movies with, danced to his music with and we even went a little nuts over him together! If we had ever had the money to go to a concert, I was the one who would go with Mom. Dad was a fan but not as big a one as Mom and me
We loved everything about Elvis. His hair, his eyes, his crooked grin, and especially his voice. My mom and I were devastated when we heard that he had died. One of the most memorable times I've ever had with Mom came a few weeks after his death, in October 1977. One of the networks ran a recording of one of his last concerts and it came on past my bed time. My mom was strict about bed times in our house, and rarely let us stay up for any reason, much less to watch television. But mom made an exception just for Me on this night. We made popcorn, turned the tv up, and watched Elvis together. Our mutual affection for Elvis has continued to this day, and although we aren't what you'd call "hard-core fans," Mom and I will always hold a special place in our hearts for the King of Rock n' Roll.
