1. A New Petition:SFD: New Petition. About twenty-five percent of the population, or approximately 68,305,302 citizens still smoke. (It took a margin of only 47,402,357 votes to elect Bill Clinton in 1996.) We therefore urge you to keep us in mind when considering tobacco legislation in the coming months.

2. Smoking and Lifestyle Policing: Fact Sheet: Forest. As far as heart disease was concerned, the death rate was 6.3 in the healthy "intervention" group, and 5.8 in the control group.

3. American Political Science Association Annual Meeting Program: The Claremont Institute. September 2-5, 1999. Atlanta Hilton and Marriott Marquis, Atlanta, GA.

4. Just a Cigar: By Jacob Sullum. The Federal Trade Commission last month recommended that Congress require warning labels on cigars. One of the warnings suggested by the FTC nicely illustrates the artful evasiveness of public-health officials who seek to shape people's behavior rather than inform them: "Cigars are not a safe alternative to cigarettes."

5. Smokers At High Cancer Risk From Radon: HealthCentral. "Eliminating (excess) indoor radon exposures... would prevent approximately 30% of radon-attributable lung cancer deaths," ... According to the CDC, about 10% to 14% of all US lung cancer deaths are attributed to radon exposure...

7. Mass. Health Officials Turn Noses Up To Smoking Ban: By Martin Finucane, Associated Press. BOSTON - State health officials this morning backed away from deploying a controversial tactic in the war on smoking: using the state sanitary code to ban smoking in restaurants statewide.

Lori Fresina, head of government affairs for the Massachusetts chapter of the American Cancer Society, said antismoking activists fear that a move by the public health agency to impose a statewide ban will surely be challenged in the courts and take years to implement.

8. We Are Everyday People:
*** Student Can't Wear Star of David: Infobeat. High school officials had told Ryan Green he could wear the necklace, but not where it could be seen. David Ingebretsen, head of the ACLU of Mississippi, said Green's family agreed Tuesday to challenge the policy in federal court.
*** "Smart" Clothes: ThirdAge. Also in the cards are training shoes with sensors that can measure how many calories you have burned off during exercises...

According to a report from the CDC, the percentage of deaths by stroke has changed very little since the beginning of this century: 6.2% in l900 vs 6.8% in l994.
