The material is derived from the second edition of Alcoholics
Anonymous, originally copyright and published in hardback by ALCOHOLICS
ANONYMOUS WORLD SERVICES, INC. The file comprises the first 164 pages of
the Big Book, plus Doctor Bob's Nightmare, and included also are the
forewords, and the appendices, which were added for the second edition.
Thus, for practical purposes, this is a third edition, less the preface and
stories. A.A. failed to renew the copyright on the first and second
editions, so that text is now in the public domain. See Ernest Kurtz,
Not-God, for a good account of those happenings. However, heeding the
injunction below from the Secretary of A.A. World Services, Inc., no
alterations have been made except at line and page breaks to facilitate word
wrap and scrolling. So, please note that figures in the footnotes are
outdated, and, more importantly, the addresses for A.A. and Al-Anon are no
longer correct.

Here is the text of A.A.'s letter in response to a first request to
reproduce in this format:

July 12, 1994

Dear Mr. D . . . . :

Thank you for your letter of July 6 regarding electronic Books. However,
the board will not approve your request to convert entire books in any
format.

The Boards's concern is that the message contained in AA literature remains
intact and unchanged. If we were to grant permission to one, we could not
in all fairness deny it to others. And in time others could edit, enhance
and amend our literature at will.

We hope you will understand the above, and again, thank you for writing.

Sincerely,
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Secretary
A.A. World Services, Inc.
