Happy Bear looked in to the magic pool and saw a very sad looking boy. His name was Adam. Adam had the mumps and could not leave the house, but worse of all none of his friend could come over to play. “I wish I could do some thing to make him happy,” said Happy Bear. You see Happy bear was always happy and could not stand to see anybody who was sad.

“You can help him,” said a deep voice. Happy Bear turned to see the Great Wizard holding a gold key on a ribbon. “Here is the magic golden key. It will open the magic gate and let you go to help the boy. When you are ready to come home place it in any lock and it will open the gate to bring you home.” Then the wizard placed the key around Happy Bears neck and told him, “be careful with the key and do not loss it.”

“thank you,” said Happy Bear, “I won’t loss it,” and he ran off to the magic gate. He put the key in the gate and turned it. the gate glowed and then opened. Happy bear steps through the gate and is standing in Adam’s room.

“There is nothing to do in here,” grumbled Adam aloud.

“We could play a game,” answered Happy Bear.

Adam turned to see a blue bear in his room with a happy face on his tummy. the bear was small standing only about three feet tall. “Who .. er .. um .. what are you,” said Adam in shock.

“I’m Happy Bear,” he said, “I’ve come to play with you if you want to.”

“Do you like to play checkers,” Adam asked?

“Well,” began Happy Bear, “I’ve never play that game before. How do you play it”

Adam let out a laugh and said, “I’ll teach you how.”

Adam and Happy Bear played for many hours until his mother called to him, “time for bed Adam.”

“OK Mom,” Adam replayed.

“I better be getting home,” said Happy Bear placing the key in the closet lock.

“Will you ever come back, will I ever see you again,” asked Adam as he climbed in to bed

“I’ll see if I can,” Said Happy Bear as he opened the door and stepped in, “and good night Adam” then Happy Bear was Gone.
