For me , the 'house system' was at the heart of my school life, in both junior and high school.
At Crossacres jnr. the house names (to remind those that went) were CHICHESTER , CHURCHILL
, NELSON and SCOTT, and i can still remember the four sheilds on the assembly hall.
It wasn't till high school that i fully understood the importance and benefits of a strong 'House' organisation.
My first week at South Wythenshawe High the teachers placed great emphasis on the importance
our 'houses' would play in our school life, i recall being given a simple blue badge to represent my house colours.
The house names were as follows
HEYWOOD, GASKELL, TATTON , EGERTON

In the third year , i was voted in as Heywood house games captain, a position which i kept
the rest of my school life. The badge is the original that was given to me 28yrs ago, the job had its perks, i was allowed
out of lessons to go round the school collecting names for forthcoming house matches. Several teachers didn't appreciate me
interupting their lessons, but i just flashed my badge and they crumbled into submission...lol .

Now , this is a very rare badge indeed, its the original crest of South Wythenshawe High School, (probably
more valuable than a gold blue peter badge). I was given this in the fourth year , the teachers knew i liked shiny
things , so they bribed me with this to become a prefect. I lasted a week before i started getting withdrawel symptoms from
not being able to play footy at break times, i informed the head teacher..... but kept the badge.

Perhaps my most memorable moment, the VICTOR LUDORUM for 1976.This shield was awarded to the most succesfull athelete
on sports day. Weeks before the event i recall betting all my classmates that i would win the 100m and 200m on sports day, even
the woodwork teacher Mr Denton bet me 10p that i wouldn't do it. Well i did, and Mr Denton was the MC on the day, i remember
as soon as i won the second race (200m) , Mr Denton announced over the PA system , that i would be buying the drinks tonight.
All my classmates paid up, which was amazing , the hardest part was collecting the shield in morning assembly.. i've never
concentrated so much climbing the steps onto the main hall stage.
