Geocaching
A high-tech scavenger hunt for those who love the great outdoors

So, what is geocaching? (pronounced "GEE-oh-cash-ing"). If you want a more detailed explanation, check out the FAQ at The Official Geocaching Site. But briefly ...

It's a scavenger hunt where you take a GPS device of some sort (like this one)
My GPS Receiver
and use clues from the Geocaching Website to track down hidden containers of trinkets, called "caches".
A Hidden Cache

These caches can be ammo cans, Tupperware, or other containers,
Ammo Can Another Ammo Can Micro Container (w/a penny, for scale)
and sometimes, there's no container at all, and the "prize" is simply finding the location itself.

Geocaching can take you to some interesting and exotic places,
Ruins Gump Tree Tower, Lake, and Mountain Underwater Trees
Belltower Lighthouse Outside a Church Yard
where you can learn history, enjoy the scenery, and even get some exercise.

There are endless variations, too. There are "Cache In Trash Out" Events where you clean up an area around a cache, "Literary Caches" where you trade books, "Event Caches", where you get together and meet other geocachers, and the list goes on and on.

It's a great activity for families, couples, and children of all ages. Gets you out of the house, shows you some areas of the country that you haven't seen before, and often teaches you something. It's low-impact on the environment and great fun.

Give it a try!
