About Us

Welcome from Jim & Marilyn Altman at Spruce Creek Farms.

We have been riding, training, hauling, breeding, showing, buying and selling horses for most of our lives. If longevity counts for anything, the Altman's have 73 years (combined)of owning Tennessee Walking Horses. Jim having his first TWH about 1955 & Marilyn in 1972.

For many years showing was the main feature here, and showing remains a part of our program.

"Regal Echo" took Jim to The Celebration and provided the thrill of a life time with a ribbon from the "big show" two years running. Echo was 16 & 17 years young when he competed there in Amt. owned & trained classes.

A wonderful stallion Echo

Echo died at Jims feet on March 25, 2000 just short of his 30th. birthday.

He was laid to rest in the paddock where he loved to romp and play and where one of his daughters, heavy in foal to Travelin' Man continues his legacy. He will always be missed

Careful selection, using all the skills honed in a life time of envolvment with the breed has produced a line up of stallions, unique yet similar- proving themselves capable of siring babies suited to 2000 and beyond.

Color is not the main thrust at Spruce Creek Farm, although color is dominate. The line "The Quality Goes In - Before The Color Goes On"- says it all.

While papers are important, first comes the horse- comformation, attitude and ability. Only when this criteria has been satisfied can the papers be considered. " You can't ride the papers" no matter what anyone tells you!

Consider then a 16+ dapple grey horse blessed with beauty, size and tallent " I'm A Travelin Man""Trav who fulfilled a dream for owner Marilyn Altman. Watching his babies grow will make a believer out of you too!

Seeing - a must!

"Starbuck" is a buckskin, Who Walks ! That is probably enough said. He has a big striding back end, a breaking front end and the substance and handsomeness to justify his use in the breeding barn. He came to Spruce Creek Farm as a yearling and after a long search, owners Visak Altman are happy to present him.
We have only natural gaited horses. Spotted Threat

Bud - the result of 2 1/2 years of cremello searching is truly a gift to the breed. Carefully guided by Frank England's attention to detail, Bud has 6 generations of palomino & cremello in his lineage- no bay ata all!
We live in a very rural setting that allows our wonderfull friends room to rome. Close enough to the "main tract" being about an hour south of Chicago, yet as country as it comes.
See our Stallions (see Stallion page) , which are naturally gaited, and we seek only naturally gaited mares.
The Spotted Stallion called "Eli" (Spotted Threat) is commanding attention from all who see him, but breeding is second to showing for this year at least.
So, if someone says "All the good studs are down South"- remember that good studs are closer than you think- four of them are at Spruce Creek Farm in Grant Park Ill- and they are- "All Natural / All the time".
