Holodiction '97 - Brisbane, Australia
Special Guest: Rene Auberjonois (Odo from Deep Space Nine)
Well, I don't have any photos from this convention (unfortunately), as we weren't allowed to take any after he was on stage. However, I'll endeavour to give a good reprisal of that great afternoon.
For anyone not familiar with the 'Holodiction', it's the Australian equivalent of the big conventions elsewhere in the world. Put on by Photon Productions, it's been running for a number of years now and always promises a decent crowd and great dealers.
This year, Brisbane was fortunate enough to have Rene as its guest. After we had spent about four hours going through the dealers' tables with a fine tooth comb and being entertained by our talented compere, Peter Budd, it was time to introduce our guest.
Rene looked very tired, but to his credit, he was wonderful. He answered questions with fervour, and even sung part of the song he did in the Disney film, "The Little Mermaid". He attempted to answer every question, and gave away some plot developments for the end of the season (five, I think) which nobody actually knew. Nobody minded. At this point, noone even knew if Odo would get his powers back. Rene set the record straight by saying, "Do you really think they'd leave him as a solid forever?". That kind of made it obvious.
After we had bombarded him for about 45 mins with questions and praise, it was autograph time. Rene made it very special. He actually personalised every autograph!! It took about an hour for everyone to get whatever they wanted signed (pretty good for a convention). There are usually, on average a couple of hundred people at the Brisbane conventions, a small number to be sure, but it made it that more personal. After everyone was autograph-satisfied, Rene left, and we thanked him for being such a great guest.
We watched two DS9 episodes noone had seen before ("Let he who is without Sin" and "Things Past"). It was a great end to the day. After a final scour of the dealers' tables, everyone left.
I do apologise for the lack of finite detail, but it was 18 months ago, and my memory has rather large gaps in it. I remember most of it, though. I recommend anyone who has not seen Rene at a convention to do so if the opportunity arises. He is a lovely man, and a great guest.
