Teachers
of Students in Grades 8–12
The beginning teacher of Digital Graphics/Animation
knows and understands: |
| # | Standard
VIII Subset Definition | My
Knowledge / Proficiency |
| 8.1k | the
appropriate use of hardware components, software
programs, and their connections; | The
minimum standard equipment required for the creation of
digital graphics & animation includes, but is not
limited to, a multimedia based workstation, scanner,
color printer, digital camera, and appropriate graphic
and animation software. |
| 8.2k | data
input skills appropriate to a given task; | I
have sufficient knowledge in a variety of graphic
editing software, such a Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia
Firework, & Paint Shop Pro to both use and instruct
students in sequential processes necessary for graphic
and animation production. |
| 8.1s | make
decisions regarding the selection, acquisition, and use
of graphics and animation software, taking into
consideration its quality, appropriateness,
effectiveness, and efficiency; | I
am very knowledgeable about popular graphic editing and
animation software packages such as the applications
mentioned above, and aware of the distinct qualities as
well as user friendliness each has to offer. |
| 8.2s | use
the vocabulary related to digital graphics and animation
software; | I have
a working knowledge of graphic file formats as well as
processes inherent in the creation of graphics and
animation, such as the common names for tool bar
elements (paint bucket, crop, rotate, pencil tool, shape
tool, etc), and layers as well as frames. |
| 8.3s | distinguish
among and correctly use process color (RGB and CYMK),
spot
color, and black/white; | RGB
(red
green blue)
color is additive (emits light), so it is best for use
on screen. CYMK (cyan
yellow magenta
black) is
subtractive (reflects light), so is best used in print.
RGB colors tend to look brighter than CYMK. CYMK colors
are creating by mixing layers of the four basic colors
CYMK is comprised of. Spot colors are pre-mixed
inks that come in a wide variety of colors, including
metallics. Pantone is the most well known spot color
process. |
| 8.4s | identify
color mixing theories and apply these theories to create
new colors in the digital format; | Traditional
color mixing theory involves primary, secondary, and
complementary colors used in a variety of schemes, such
as achromatic, monochromatic, and analogous. Click
here to view several of my color theory samples. |
| 8.5s | compare,
contrast, and integrate basic sound-editing principles,
including the addition of effects and the manipulation
of wave forms; | I
understand how to open and edit an audio track in sound
editing applications such as Sound Forge. I know how and
where to clip the audio file, as well as how to mark
areas of the clip and apply special effects such as
mute, reverb, echo, stadium sound, etc. I also know that
there are compression rate and file size variables
between, for instance, laying a soundtrack in a
non-linear video post-production and animation projects. |
| 8.6s | distinguish
among and use the components of animation software
programs, including the animation control panel and
cast, score, and stage; | The
most commonly used program that references specific
components such as cast, score, and stage is Macromedia
Director. The cast is comprised of images (bitmaps),
sound files, text, video, etc. The score and stage are
part of the work area --the stage being a visual
representation of an event that occurs at a given point
in time, and the score a visual log of what events occur
over a period of time.
A control panel, in a more general sense (not
designating a specific software application), allows the
user to specify the way a tool is applied. For instance,
a control panel setting might offer transparency
settings when color is applied to an image. |
| 8.7s | select
and connect task-appropriate peripherals; | There
are a variety of task-appropriate peripherals necessary
or useful for digital graphic and animation production,
including, but not limited to scanners, printers,
digital cameras, videos, and memory storage devices.
These peripherals may be attached via parallel ports,
USB ports, Firewire connections, etc. |
| 8.8s | distinguish
between and use the animation techniques of path and
cell
animation; | Cell
animation, also known as frame animation, charts event
changes over time on a frame by frame basis. Path
animation is based on a starting and end point where the
animation is created by following a path from start to
finish. For example, applying the principle of cell
animation with Adobe Premiere, you might have a series
of identical yet slightly different still images placed
adjacent to one another, producing (in a finished
project) the illusion of movement. In Macromedia Flash
or even Fireworks, you might place a large triangle at
the bottom of a file workspace, convert the triangle to
a symbol and place a smaller version of it at the top of
the image workspace, then apply a "tween" and
distribute it to frames, thereby producing a new,
animated sequence that moves from one point to another. |
| 8.9s | demonstrate
proficiency in the use and graphical integration of a
variety of
input devices; | I
am proficient in using and have, in a variety of
classes, demonstrated skill in the use of input devices
such as a mouse, keyboard, digital camera, scanner,
CD-Rom, etc. |
| 8.10s | compare
and contrast digital input devices; | I
have used and become familiar with digital input devices
such as:
 | Graphic Tablets to produce freehand illustrations |
 | Digital Cameras to upload digital images to the
hard drive of a workstation |
 | Scanners to scan both images and text based
documents |
 | Digital video devices, such as a direct Firewire
connection from a camcorder to the workstation, or
an analogue connection from a VCR to an intermediary
device connected to a video capture card |
|
| 8.11s | model
respect for intellectual property when manipulating,
morphing, and
editing graphics, video, text, and sound; | I
model respect for intellectual property by abstaining
from distorting or using copyrighted materials in an
unauthorized fashion, or appropriating text without
giving due and proper credit to the original author |
| 8.12s | research
digital graphics as an art form and the impact of
digital graphics on
society; | Since my
undergraduate and first graduate level degree is in Fine
Art, I am very familiar with digital media as an art
form. I stay apprised of contemporary art issues as well
as sociological issues via paper based and electronic
journals. |
