Episode 1

A New Beginning & Dueling Datebooks
February 16. 19, 23 & 24, 2004

February 16

Setup: Marcie & Michael are in Angel Square in front the angel statue.  Heaven has wiped their memories--Michael is no longer aware of Al’s memories and Marcie does not remember learning that Al’s soul has been in Michael’s body since November. Luna is thrilled, while Megan looks on.

Luna: Megan, Darling, there you are. I'm about to burst here. Oh, Honey, I can't thank you enough for all the wonderful work you did. Thank you.

Megan: Did you get your happy ending?

Luna: Well, I think it's more like a happy beginning.

Michael: You feeling better?

Marcie: Yeah. I feel like something big kind of happened.

Michael: Yeah, me, too.

Marcie: But what?

Michael: I don't know. Maybe we happened.

Marcie: Maybe we did. There's just something about you, Michael McBain, something that's making me really happy.

Luna: So, what about you, Megan? You did what you came here for?

Megan: Yes. My mother needed my help, and now she'll be just fine. And so will Ben.

February 19

At the police station, Marcie is sitting at her desk.  She looks up and sees Michael standing next to the desk.

Marcie: Hey, what are we doing here again?

Michael: Well, we're here for our first official date.

Marcie: No, we've actually been out together before. Don't you remember? Valentine's Day?

Michael: Yeah. But this feels different. I don't know, like something new.

Marcie: I know what you mean.

Later, Marcie & Michael are at Capricorn.  RJ is tending bar and talking to them.

R.J.: Well, hey, we sold out Capricorn on Valentine's night with Simply Red. And that was your idea, so, you know, if this doctor thing doesn't work out for you --

Asa: Gannon! We're celebrating!

R.J.: Ok. If you'll excuse me a minute, I have to find someone to mollify the resident mogul.

Michael: Why don't you hit him in the head with a bottle?

Marcie: Michael.

Michael: What? I'm just joking around.

R.J.: Maybe you should stick to the E.R. Until you work on that bedside manner. I'll be right back.

Marcie: Hey, here's to a new beginning.

Michael: To something new. God, you have the most amazing eyes.

Marcie: Cut it out. Hey, did you ever talk to your brother?

Michael: Yep. I'm kind of worried about him.

Marcie: Why?

Michael: Well, he has this theory that the music box killer killed his fiancée about five years ago back in Jersey.

Marcie: What?

Michael: Yeah, and he blames all these murders that are happening right now on himself.

Marcie: No, no way. You've got to talk to him, make sure that he knows he's not responsible.

Michael: Well, it's not like he's going to listen to me.

Marcie: Well, that was before. This is a new beginning.

Michael: One thing at a time, Marcie. Besides, I think the only way for him to be really be ok with what's going on right now is to catch this guy.

Marcie: I hope he does before anybody else gets hurt.

Later, Marcie & Michael are sitting in a booth.

Michael: You ok?

Marcie: Yeah, I just can't stop thinking about your brother, John. You know, he's -- he's going to need you.

Michael: I don't think he'd want me to bother. Honestly, you know, he has a case; he gets really wrapped up in it. But this one --

Marcie: No, this is different. He's reliving his worst nightmare. I know that you guys aren't close and all, but --

Michael: Well, it's a lot better. I mean, now since you helped us out, it's much better.

Marcie: So then extend another olive branch. You know, you could really help him get through this.

Michael: I don't know.

Marcie: Michael --

Michael: I don't know.

Marcie: Michael, he just probably thinks that, you know, you don't want to be bothered. So maybe if you were to call him --

Michael: You don't give up, do you?

Marcie: Not when I care about somebody.

Michael: Why is it that you always know exactly what I need?

Marcie: I don't know.

Michael: Hmm. Want to dance?

Marcie: I'd love to.

Marcie & Michael dance.

February 23 (Monday)

At the police station, Marcie is working at her desk when Michael comes in.  He extends his hand.  He is holding a Gerber daisy.

Marcie: This is the kind of flower that Al --

Michael: Al used to get for you all the time. You told me.

Marcie: Oh. Right.

Michael: I know how much you like these.

Marcie: I do. And for the first time, I -- I don't feel weird about remembering Al and being happy that we're getting closer.

Later, Michael is sitting next to Marcie’s desk.

Michael: You going to knock off soon?

Marcie: Shouldn't you be in the E.R. Saving lives?

Michael: Well, I'm on call, but it's been quiet so far.

Marcie: I'm sorry, I just -- I can’t.

Michael: Ok, well, I got tomorrow off. So, uh -- I don't know, if I actually get some sleep tonight, maybe we could do something tomorrow?

Marcie: Uh, sorry.

Michael: Come on, Marcie. They got to give you a break here sometime.

Marcie: No, it's not that. I -- I have this test that I really have got to study for. It's --

Michael: Hmm, a test. Yes, that's so much more important than having a social life.

Marcie: I have to keep my scholarship. You should understand.

Michael: No, I know, I get it, I get it. It's just that with you working here all the time and me at the hospital all the time, I just don't know when we're going to get a chance to see each other, sweetie.

Marcie: In our dreams.

Michael: You're joking, right?

Marcie: I don't know, what do you think?

Still later, Marcie and Michael are at her desk looking at their datebooks.

Michael: No. No. Wednesday, no. Thursday. What about Thursday?

Marcie: Thursday? No, I have classes.

Michael: Ok, all right. Uh -- Sunday night is my next all-nighter. We could get together -- we could get together Monday, 5:00 A.M., for coffee.

Marcie: A.M.?

Michael: Yes.

Marcie: You call that a date?

Michael: No. No, I don’t.

Marcie laughs softly.

Michael: This is impossible.

Bo and Nora are in his office discussing the latest development in the Music Box Killer case.  .

Bo: Let's get out of here, huh?

Nora: Hmm?

Bo: Let's just go and take a break. We'll get something to eat.

Nora: Sounds good. That sounds great.

Nora and Bo walk out of Bo’s office.  Nora spots Michael.

Nora: Hey, Michael. How are you?

Marcie & Michael: Hi.

Bo: We're going to -- we're going to go out for a while, so if John comes back, just tell him we're not going to be too long, all right?

Marcie: Can I do anything?

Nora: No, thanks.

Marcie: Ok. Bye.

Michael: Wow. Oh. What's up with them?

Marcie: Oh, they're frustrated that the music box killer's still on the loose and they have absolutely no clue who the next victim's going to be.

John walks into the main area of the police station.

Michael: Hey, John. Boy, you look terrible.

John: Thank you.

Marcie: Oh, the Commissioner and Mrs. Buchanan said that they would be right -- back. Oh.

John goes into Bo’s office.

Michael: What's up with him?

Marcie: Oh, I wouldn't worry about it. He gets like that when he's working. He's chasing a killer around three states.

Michael: Yeah, like I'm chasing you around two date books.

Marcie: I'm really not avoiding you, I promise.

Michael’s pager beeps.

Michael: Oh, that's the hospital. I'll see you.

Marcie: Oh, ok. Um, thanks for the daisy.

February 24 (Tuesday)

Marcie is at her desk at the Police Station talking on the phone.

Marcie: Sergeant Gillis, I know. I'm really sorry about that. I -- I could have sworn that I left that file on your desk. Yes. Yes, I know what you said. Well -- well, listen. Listen; if I just come in, I know that I can find it. Sergeant Gillis? Pops? Pops, I'm back. I'm so sorry. Pops? Pops, are you there? Can you hear me? Can you hear me now, pops?

Michael walks and hands her a bouquet of flowers.

Marcie: Michael, Hi.

Michael: Hi, yourself.

Marcie: God, you came just in the nick of the time. I needed some cheering up. What are these for?

Michael: For you. Just for you. No reason. Hey, do you still have time to have lunch with me and my mom?

Marcie: I don't have time for anything, but I have time for this.

Michael: Oh, great.

The phone rings.

Marcie: Why were these things invented?

Michael: You know, my brother John is going to try and stop by if he can.

Marcie: Llanview P.D. I'm sorry, this is Marcie Walsh. Oh, Hi, Sergeant Gillis. Oh, you found it? Where? In the refrigerator. No, that's not funny. I'm sorry. Bye.

Later at The Palace, Natalie asks Marcie & Michael if they have seen Jessica.

Marcie: I haven't seen Jessica.

Michael: No, neither have I.

Natalie: Well, if you do hear anything, please --

Marcie: Yeah, we'll let you know right away.

Natalie: Thank you.

Michael: Definitely. Have you seen John? You don't know if he's wrapping things up down there at the police station, do you?

Natalie: I don't, I don’t. But John -- I don't think he wraps it up at all. Why?

Michael: Well, he's supposed to meet me here for lunch, Marcie and I and my mom.

Marcie: Yeah, I'm sure she'd love to see you again, too. Why don't you come along? Have you had lunch yet?

Natalie: I haven't even had breakfast.

Michael: Well, you should eat something. I… I know these things. I'm a doctor.

Natalie: I -- I -- you know, I got to find Jess. I'm sorry.

Michael: No, no, not on an empty stomach, you don’t. Come on, have a nosh. It's good.

Natalie: I don't think that you're going to get John here either, to be honest. He is very focused right now on finding Jessica.

Moments later, Michael and Marcie are still talking to Natalie.

Natalie: Can you guys just hang on one second? I want to ask around and see if anyone's seen Jessica, ok? (takes Marcie’s flowers) I'll put these in water for you.

Marcie: Oh, great, thanks.

Michael: Yeah. Ooh, my mom's here. I didn't see her come in.

Marcie: Natalie? We'll see you at the table. Ok.

Michael: Hey, mom.

Eve: Hi, baby. Good to see you. Glad you brought my favorite girl.

Michael: Yeah, me, too.

Natalie walks over to the table.

Marcie: Oh, Mrs. McBain, you remember Natalie Vega, don't you?

Eve: I sure do -- my other boy's friend. Hi.

Michael: John was going to try and make it, but -- I don't know -- he's up to his eyeballs in the serial killer thing, so he probably won't make it.

Marcie: Anybody see Jessica?

Natalie: Yeah, they -- they heard from her. She called, but John's still very worried about her.

Eve: Is something wrong?

Marcie: Well, the police are really desperate to find Natalie’s sister.

Natalie: But she called, so it's --

Eve: You mentioned John.

Natalie: Yeah, well, he's very focused on this music box killer case. It's gotten very, very intense, and he actually thinks that these murders may be connected to the death of his fiancée.

Eve: Caitlin?

Natalie: Yeah. He really loved her, didn't he?

Michael: I don't know. I didn't really know her.

Eve: He was never the same after she died.
