Episode 11

The Long & Short of It
April 28 & 29, 2004

April 28, 2004 (Wednesday)

Michael is asleep and obviously dreaming.  Marcie comes into the room.

Michael: (moans in his sleep) No!

Marcie touches him lightly and startles him.

Marcie: (screams) Oh!

Michael: (screams) Oh!

Marcie: Michael.

Michael: Oh.

Michael finally realizes it is Marcie.

Jen is at Capricorn, standing near the bar.  Roxy hustles over to her.

Roxy: Hey, Jen, you seen Rexie?

Jen: No, I've been lucky so far today.

Roxy: Ok, because he's not at home, he's not at U.V., and your mama ain't answering the phone. Maybe they're a little bit busy. You know, last time I walked in on them, well, honey, you don't want to know what your mama was doing to my baby.

Jen: No, I don't!

Roxy: Ooh, nice camera. So who do you have to blank around here to get a drink?

Lindsay and Rex walk into Capricorn.  Lindsay notices Jen and approaches her slowly.

Lindsay: Jen.

Jen: Listen, if you're still making a fool of yourself like this, we have nothing to say to each other.

In Michael’s hospital room, Marcie tries to get her breathing back to normal.

Marcie: Why did you scream like that? You scared me half to death!

Michael: Well, you screamed.

Marcie: You screamed first! Who the heck did you think I was anyway, Michael?

Michael: I was having a bad dream.

Marcie: Yeah, probably about someone catching you spying!

Michael: You know, you weren't supposed to be home till tomorrow. What are you doing here?

Marcie: I took the early bus because I wanted to see you. I thought Jen took these away from you.

Michael: I missed you. I swear I was going to tell you, ok? I tried to leave it alone!

Marcie: Yeah, but you didn't, did you?

Michael: No. But I got John involved. I told John about the Paul Cramer - Dr. Long connection and he's suspicious, too.

Marcie: Yeah, that's great, Michael. That's really, really great.

Michael: Wait a second, you're mad at me? I got Johnny involved. He's got my back.

Marcie: You lied to me. I asked you not to. You swore to me that you wouldn't, and then you just went ahead and you did it anyway! I can't even believe you! You know, you can lose your residency over this! How could you do this? I'm not -- I –

Meanwhile, back at Capricorn, Roxy has cornered Rex.

Roxy: So why don't you tell me the next time you run off with mommy dearest?

Rex: We were only gone overnight.

Roxy: Yeah, just enough time for her to lock you away in her fun house. I was just about to call the cops!

Rex: Well, wait until you see the art I bought for the new restaurant in Miami. Unbelievable. I was quite the commuter. I'm talking 82 degrees, clear blue skies. We sat and watched the sun set over South Beach.

Roxy: Hmm, that's sweet. Well, the sun's going down on me, and I don't like it one bit.

Rex: What's wrong?

Roxy: Well, you know, everything costs so much. Think maybe you could just front me a little cash, huh?

Rex: I just gave you 500, and you only got that because you walked in at a bad time.

Roxy: Oh, it looked like you were having a real good time to me.

Rex: What do you need it for?

Roxy: What do you care? You got a rich sugar mama.

Rex: You're gambling again, aren't you? You're back at the track.

Lindsay continues to try to talk to Jen.

Lindsay: I just want to know how you're doing. I miss you.

Jen: Yeah, not enough to stop seeing Rex.

Lindsay: Do you still have feelings for him? Because if you do -- if you do, just tell me.

Jen: My God, is that what you think this is about? It's about you. I cannot stand by and watch you trash your life again. I won't do it.

Roxy and Rex continue their conversation.

Roxy: You know what, never mind.

Rex: Whoa, you're playing the ponies again, aren't you? You know, you lose every time! Why don't you stick to the slots? At least then you have to have the quarter before you can play.

Roxy: I'm not playing the ponies. I'm not! It's my business. It's just going a little bit slow right now and I'm overextended. But the good news is, on the plus side, I'm going to go work for Nigel at the hotel.

Rex: Good. Maybe you can toss a few dollars my way.

Roxy: What, are you broke?

Rex: Totally maxed my credit cards.

Roxy: Well, why don't you go ask your little blonde barracuda over there, because she's rolling in it?

Rex: She does all right. So?

Roxy: Can't she throw you a little something extra -- you know, for your time?

Rex: I'm not her gigolo, Roxy. We've got this, you know, chemistry.

Lindsay continues to try to get Jen to understand her side of things.

Lindsay: I'm not trashing my life. I don't know where this thing with Rex is going.

Jen: Ok, so what happens when Rex thinks that you're no fun anymore?

Lindsay: Well, I guess then that'll be that.

Jen: It's never been easy for you to let go.

Lindsay: You know, I -- I've made a lot of mistakes. I realize that.

Jen: Yeah, you have. And so have I, but I'm trying to change. And if you go over the edge again, I can't be there. Just get Rex out of your life before it's too late.

Meanwhile back in Michael’s hospital room, Marcie and Michael try to return to normal.

Marcie: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to go crazy like that. I shouldn't have went off on you.

Michael: Hey, hey --

Marcie: I completely overreacted.

Michael: Shh. If anybody here should apologize, it's me. I made a promise and I broke it. I'm sorry. But, you know, I got to admit; I didn't expect that big a reaction. I mean, if I did I wouldn't spy on Dr. Long, but --

Marcie: I don't want to lose you.

Michael: You're not going to lose me.

Marcie: I know, but people think that. You know, look at Al. One day he was here, and the next minute, he wasn’t.

Michael: I know. I know. But I am not going anywhere.

Marcie: Promise?

Michael: I promise.

Marcie: What if -- what if Dr. Long knows that you're spying on him? What if he catches you?

Michael: Nothing is going to happen to me. Except I'm going to go to sleep because this leg kept me up all night last night.

Marcie: Oh, I'm sorry, and I'm yelling at you and screaming at you. I'm sorry.

Michael: No, no.

Marcie: I'm going to let you go to sleep, ok?

Michael: No, I just don't want you to worry about me, sweetie, ok?

Marcie: Ok.

Michael: Because I'm not going anywhere. I'm going to stay right here, right next to you.

Marcie: Ok. Go to sleep.

Michael: Forever.

At Capricorn, Rex wonders if Lindsay got through to Jen.

Rex: You didn't get anywhere with Jen? You argue?

Lindsay: Oh, God, an argument would've been less painful.

Rex: R.J.! Listen, I cannot thank you enough for helping me out.

R.J.: Well, just make me money, don't thank me. It's a business deal, see, not a charity.

Rex: Seriously, I mean, wait until you see the art and the furniture I just picked up in Miami. Whoo!

R.J.: Well, who was minding Ultra Violet while you were off having a shopping spree?

Rex: Actually, I was just on my way over there to check in with Hogan to see how things went last night. Sweetheart, I'll be back soon.

Lindsay: Ok.

Rex leaves and RJ focuses on Lindsay.

R.J.: Oh, you know, the way that boy goes through money, you'd think he'd be a little better at bringing it in.

Lindsay: Excuse me.

R.J.: Yes, sir, Mr. Balsom. Just miss two little payments, and everything you own is mine.

Marcie, Riley and Jen are sitting in a booth at Capricorn.  Jen is showing Marcie the footage she took of Riley’s reaction to being dumped by Flash.

Riley: Oh, come on, Marcie, you don't really want to watch it, do you?

Marcie: No, no, listen, don’t. You know, everyone can identify with how painful it is to lose someone, you know? It's ok.

Riley: Yeah, well, I wouldn't have made it without my friends.

Jen: Listen, if you want me to take this stuff about Flash out --

Riley: No, it's your film. I'll just have to deal, all right? You can leave it in. But I'll be back.

Riley leaves.

Jen: Ok, you saw the footage. Hand over "The Killing Club."

Marcie: It's really rough. I --

Jen: Ok, who watched your boyfriend while you were out of town and made sure he wasn't spying on anyone? I mean, I know it didn't work, but still --

Marcie: I know, I really did appreciate it.

Jen: So I say you owe me.

Marcie: All right -- but only the first chapter.

Marcie hands Jen the manuscript.

Jen: I love murder mysteries.

Marcie: I know, I do, too. They're Michael’s favorite. Well, until I actually started thinking Michael actually might be living one.

Meanwhile, in Michael’s hospital room, he appears to be asleep.  Long sneaks in and starts looking around.  He sees the view that Michael has of his office and then closes the blinds.  He starts looking around the room.  He is standing by the bed just as the door swings open and a nurse comes in.  Long grabs a card from the side table.

Sofia: Dr. Long. I'm sorry. I didn't realize you were in here.

Dr. Long: Oh, I was just leaving a get-well card from the staff.

Sofia: It was nice of you to bring it in yourself.

Dr. Long: Well, Dr. McBain’s a valuable resident. We're all just hoping for his speedy recovery. Excuse me.

Long leaves and Michael opens his eyes.  He’s been pretending to be asleep.

At Capricorn, Marcie and Jen continue their conversation.

Jen: You're going to get this published.

Marcie: No, come on, I'm just starting. It --

Jen: But you're going to finish it, right? I mean I have to know how it ends.

Marcie: Well, look, only if you finish your documentary. You know, Riley’s really been through a lot. I think he could inspire people.

Jen: Yeah, he's -- he's a great subject. I mean, the whole thing about the drugs and then coming clean -- I mean, I could've done the whole documentary just on his relationship with his father.

Marcie: Wow, you're really getting to know him a lot more than I thought, huh?

Jen: Yeah, it's -- it's really different for me, you know, being friends with a guy and not constantly wondering whether or not it's going to turn into more.

Marcie: Still not talking to your mom?

Jen: If she goes off the deep end again -- I can't do it, Marcie.

Marcie: Listen, maybe she'll wake up and realize what she's doing to herself. You know, you did.

Later, Rex and Lindsay are together again at Capricorn. Lindsay looks over at Jen, who is laughing and talking to Riley.

Lindsay: I'm going to go home. If you don't mind, I'm -- I'm going to go home by myself.

Rex: Really? Why?

Lindsay: Because I just really need to be alone.

Rex: Sure.

Riley and Jen are sitting next each other in a booth at Capricorn.  They are watching Jen’s video on the small viewing screen of the video camera.

Jen: Who's that in the background?

Riley: I really can't tell.

Jen: Hold the camera. I'm sorry.

Riley: Uh, don't be.

Jen: No, it's me. I -- I just like things with us the way they are.

Riley: Well, don't you ever think about it?

Jen: Have you seen yourself in the mirror lately?

Riley: Have you? Well, the question still stands.

Jen: Sure I have. Yes, but I don't want things to change between us.

Riley: Friends till we're 40, huh?

Marcie rushes into Michael’s hospital room.

Marcie: Michael, I came as fast as I could. What's the matter?

Michael: Dr. Long snuck in here while he thought I was sleeping.

Marcie: What?

Michael: Yeah. He walked over to the window, he shut the blinds, started snooping around, and then one of the nurses came in.

Marcie: Right?

Michael: He said that he was leaving me a get-well card.

Marcie: I don't get it. It's just a get-well card.

Michael: Yeah, he must have swiped that off the table.

Marcie: So -- so he lied?

Michael: This is from the nurses in Pediatrics. I'm telling you, Marcie, I get the weirdest feeling from this guy, ok? It's like he knows I'm watching him. I don't know, maybe I'm just flipping out over nothing.

Marcie: Then again, maybe you're not.

Michael: You think?

Marcie: I think.

April 29, 2004 (Thursday)

In Michael’s hospital room, Marcie is laying next to him on the bed wrapped in his arms.  She is asleep and snoring quietly.  John, Kathryn and Shannon stroll into the room.  Michael gently nudges Marcie.

Michael: Hey, sleeping beauty.

Marcie wakes up and then sees John, Kathryn and Shannon.

Marcie: Oh -- oh -- hi! Hi. I -- I came by to wake Michael up early, and – (looks up at Michael)  what are they doing here?

Michael: That's a good question. John?

John: Not a good question, Michael. Remember I called you? We're going to go over everything you know about Dr. Long.

Kathryn: Yeah, especially the stuff with Paul Cramer.

John holds the camera so Michael can see the view screen.

John: These are the pictures Shannon took on the rooftop.

Michael: Is -- is Paul Cramer kissing somebody?

Shannon: Natalie.

Marcie: Oh, cut it out.

Shannon: Yeah, and, I mean, they were going at it until Dr. Long came --

John: Shannon, would you do us all a favor and go get yourself a cup of coffee?

Shannon rolls her eyes but leaves.

John: Thank you. Ok, keep skipping through.

Michael: Ok.

John: There's your Dr. Long.

Kathryn:  Hmm. And he doesn't look happy with Paul. What's that about?

Michael: It can't be anything good. Oh, why is it that they're meeting up there and not in the office now? And how come Paul Cramer’s getting paid in cash from the Chief-of-Staff's bottom drawer?

Kathryn: Well, Cramer’s never been shy about illegal cargo, but what's he carrying? I mean, is it drugs? The hospital's full of them.

Michael: Yeah, it's a possibility, but to be honest with you, I get a really bad feeling about organ donation, and I know I'm not the only one.

John: Did you tell somebody else?

Michael: No. No, no, no. I just listened. Now, a patient's widow was questioning Dr. Long about the fact that her husband was included on a donor list when she swore up and down that he refused to be included on that list. Now, I checked the patient's file. Dr. Long was lying.

Kathryn: Who would know what Paul Cramer is ferrying out of here at night?

Michael: I hate to say it, but I'd start with the girl that he was kissing up on the roof.

John: What exactly does this Dr. Long do in here? And leave any hanky-panky out of it.

Michael: You know, I wasn't exactly sure what he was doing, because I was trying to pretend to be asleep, but I did hear him close the blinds. He pretended to be leaving a get-well card.

John: He pretended to?

Michael: Yeah. You see, while he was snooping around, one of the nurses came in to check on me. He had to have a reason to be in here, so --

John: Ok, Michael, I want you to just leave all of this alone, all right? And I'm not just saying it because you're my brother, ok? Just -- if there is something going on here, it's just going to…to jeopardize everything with you snooping around and freelancing, ok?

Kathryn: If Dr. Long isn't sure about you, let's keep it that way.

John: I'm on this now, Michael, ok? Your job is to watch your back, watch Marcie’s back, all right? You got it?

Michael: I got it.

John: You got it?

Michael: I got it, Johnny.

John: Ok.

Michael: Hey, thanks for listening to me, man. I'm not a nut.

John: Oh, I still think you're a nut, but I'll listen to you. All right, erase all the photos on that camera.

Michael: Ok.

John: I'll see you later.

Marcie: Bye.

Michael: See ya.

John and Kathryn leave.

Michael: (looks at Marcie) See, I told you I was right. John doesn't waste any time.

Marcie: I know. Your brother cares a lot about you. We all care a lot about you. So, how do you delete these pictures?

Michael: Uh -- we'll worry about that later.

Marcie: Michael.

Michael: Maybe. Hand me my binoculars.

Marcie: Didn't you just promise your brother? All right, listen to me. I'm going to make a deal with you, ok? Because I want to keep you out of this, and to prove to you that Dr. Long is not doing anything, I'm going to go look around for you, but then you're going to stop snooping. Do we have a deal?

Michael: Ok. You're going to be careful, right? It's in and out.

Marcie: Hello! Look who you're talking to!

Michael: You're not going to do anything risky?

Marcie: I'm not going to do anything risky.

Michael: Ok. Deal.

Marcie: Deal.

In the hallway, Marcie waylays a nurse.

Marcie: Hey. Hi. I'm Marcie Walsh. I don't know if you remember me or not, but I used to work for Dr. Conklin.

Nurse: Can I help you?

Marcie: Well, I'm researching a mystery novel, and I was wondering if maybe you could tell me how someone would illegally transport something out of a hospital.

Nurse: Well, don't ever say this came from me, but –

Long and Paul appear.  The nurse rushes away and Marcie hides behind a folding screen and listens.

Dr. Long: Thank you.

Paul: Dr. Long?

Dr. Long: You have no right to be here. I fired you.

Paul: Yeah, well, maybe you should return my messages --

Dr. Long: Shh --

Paul: Unless you want me to tell the police what's going on around here, huh?

Dr. Long: You can't do that without implicating yourself.

Paul: Oh, sure, I can. I can go state evidence.

Dr. Long: Saying what? You had no idea what those trips were for. Those containers were sealed. All right, what do you want?

Paul: My job back.

Dr. Long: Ha! Fat chance.

Paul: Well, we either both have a job or we both don't.

Dr. Long: Fine. Just no more friends on the roof.

Paul: Thank you. I'm glad you see it my way.

Marcie sneezes and both Paul and Long look around suspiciously.

John knocks on the door at Llanfair.  Natalie opens the door.

Natalie: Hey. What are you doing here?

John: Ok. Ok, I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but I need to talk to you again about your buddy Paul Cramer.

Natalie: Ok.

John: Natalie, do you have any idea what kind of cargo he's transporting in that helicopter?

Natalie: No, no, not really.

John: "No, not really"? What is that? Does that mean you don't know or you're not telling?

Natalie: You're not here because you're -- you're jealous of Paul, right?

John: No. That's why I didn't want you thinking this was coming from the wrong place.

Natalie: You have no clue what the wrong place is.

Natalie closes the door in his face.

At the hospital, after hearing Marcie’s sneeze, Long and Paul are looking around suspiciously and about to go investigate when Viki walks up to them.

Viki: Dr. Long, hello.

Dr. Long: Oh, President Davidson, hello.

Viki: Paul.

Paul: Hi. Excuse me.

Paul leaves.

Dr. Long: Well -- oh, I'm late for a meeting. Nice seeing you.

Viki: Yes.

Long leaves.  Jessica rushes up to Viki.

Viki: Jessica! Are you following me?

Marcie comes out from behind the folding screen.

Viki: Marcie.

Marcie: Hi, President Davidson.

Viki: What are you doing? Were you hiding?

Marcie: I -- I was. I -- I was looking for something -- for Michael. Excuse me.

Marcie rushes away.  Viki watches her retreat for a second then turns to Jessica.

Viki: Very strange here today. You were following me, weren't you?

Jessica: Ok, yeah, I was, but why did you take off like that?

Viki: Because I wanted to make sure that Ben was really all right. You and Natalie are behaving very oddly. You know that? Oh, look what I found. I was doing research on my heart condition. I found --

Jessica: "Dr. Ben Davidson."

Viki: Yes, this very clever article. My sweetie pie wrote this. Actually, it's just as well you're here because I'm off to the conference for university presidents today, and I will be back soon.

Jessica: Mom --

Viki: I love you. Goodbye.
