Episode 13 Up, Up & Away
May 7 (Friday) In Michael’s hospital room, Marcie & Michael are talking about Marcie’s latest plan to get information on what Dr. Long and Paul Cramer are doing. Marcie: I wish it were time for me to go up to the roof. Michael: Marcie -- Marcie: Maybe I should go up there now. What if the chopper is about to leave? Michael: And what if you get arrested for trespassing? Marcie: I work for the police. I'll just tell your brother, John, what I was doing. Oh, my gosh! Michael: Marcie -- Marcie: I could actually help save people's lives! Michael: Marcie! Marcie: What? Michael: You're not going anywhere. Marcie: But, Michael -- Michael: You're not going anywhere. We're calling my brother, and we are going to give him everything that we have up to this point.
In John’s office, he is trying to put the screws to Paul. Paul: Shouldn't you be out looking for Todd Manning’s kid? John: My point is Bo's not going to tell me to back off investigating someone we know is dirty. Paul: Hmm. No, this is about Natalie. John: No, this is about the chopper runs you're making from the hospital. Paul: Well, that's what I do. That's why they hired me. I mean, it may look a little weird if I didn't make any runs, wouldn't it? I mean, face it, McBain, you got nothing on me. John: Wrong, again.
Meanwhile back in Michael’s hospital room, Marcie & Michael continue their conversation. Marcie: It's like John said, ok? We don't have enough evidence to warrant a police investigation, Michael. Michael: Isn't that what an investigation is for? To find evidence? Marcie: Your brother already said no, ok? And if we want to find out what unspecified cargo is going on that chopper, then I have to do this. Michael: The thing is -- before, you were trying to convince me to stop snooping because you didn't want me to get into any trouble. Marcie: All right -- Michael: You didn't want anything to happen to me. Marcie: Fine, Michael. What's your point? Michael: Yeah, what about you? What if something was to happen to you, ok? I get a real bad feeling from this thing. Marcie: Michael, listen to me – Dorian bursts into the room. Dorian: You will never guess what's happened. Michael: What's wrong? Dorian: Someone has stolen a donor heart.
In John’s office, Paul and John continue their conversation. Paul: You just want me out of the picture so you can keep Natalie on a string, right? John: Unfortunately, Paul, I don't have time for this outpouring. Paul: John, I'm in love with Natalie. John: Congratulations. But we all know what you're really in love with is her inheritance, and if you knew her better, you'd realize she doesn't care about that. Paul: This whole "cop" thing is an act, right? Something you can hide behind so you don't have to show your real feelings? Well, this time it's not going to work -- if you want to win, anyway.
In Michael’s hospital room, Dorian fills Marcie & Michael in on the details of the disappearing organ. Dorian: An accident victim was brought into the emergency room. He died on the operating table. His driver's license said he was a donor, so the usual procedures took place. He was put on life support, and the team came in to harvest the organs. Marcie: Harvest? That sounds a little -- Michael: No, it's a very respectful process, truly. Dorian: Only in this case, a heart had already been taken out. Marcie: You're kidding me. Someone came in, cut out the heart, and then just walked out with it. Michael: It's long, I know it. Dorian: He has been very protective of those donor files. Michael: Yeah, he's guilty as sin. Dorian: Yeah. But we need proof. Marcie: Well, I'll get it. I mean, I don't know how I’ll get it, but I'll find it. Michael: Well, let's think about this, ok? Now, a heart can't stay alive outside the body for very long. It's got to be kept cool, and it's got to be kept in a special solution. Marcie: Yeah, which means it's probably inside of that helicopter that's about to take off right now, Michael. Michael: It's possible, but I think that we should really think this through. Marcie: Michael, come on. Dorian: And we have to proceed very, very carefully, because if Dr. Long is so depraved that he's stealing organs, who knows what he's going to do if somebody finds out. Michael: You think maybe we should call the cops? Dorian: You know, sometimes, if you want something done fast, you just have to do it yourself.
Later, Marcie rushes into Michael’s room. She is dressed in a white lab coat. Marcie: I found this in the room down the hall. Michael: Marcie, I really don't want you doing this. You know what? Why don't we call my brother, you know? That heart's got to be around here somewhere. You know, it's got to be kept cool, it's got to be kept in a special solution. Marcie: Yes, yes, I know, and we'll call your brother John when we find out the proof, ok? Come on, you're a doctor. You get to save lives every day. Michael: Not lately. Marcie: Well, you will again. Oh, come on, listen, I’m just a silly little college kid. I have no direction in life, and it doesn't matter if I mess my life up. Michael: Stop that right now, ok? You're smart, you're funny, and you're beautiful, and you turned my life around. Marcie: Michael, please. Michael: Listen, before I met you, saving lives to me was just sort of a -- it was a job, you know? It was a challenge. Sort of a competition with god. None of the patients that I was treating meant anything to me at the time. You taught me to see those people. Marcie: I know, and that's what I’m going to do this for. It's for those people. You know that you would do this if you weren't stuck here. Come on. Have a little faith in me? I'm not going to let anything happen to me, I promise. Michael: Well, what if something does happen to you? Marcie: Nothing's going to happen. I won't let it. I promise, ok? Marcie leaves and outside Michael’s room she smiles broadly and rushes off at a confident pace.
Michael looks through the binoculars and worries about Marcie. Michael: Be careful, Marcie. Please. In the meanwhile, Marcie has found a place to use as a lookout and she spies on the helicopter. Paul comes up behind her and touches her on the shoulder. Marcie: What? (raises up and hits her head) Paul: What are you doing on the helicopter pad? Marcie stares at Paul and rubs her head. May 10, 2004 (MONDAY) Marcie rubs her head, looks at Paul and stalls for time. Marcie: Um, I -- well, I -- you know, do you come up here a lot? Paul: Well, you know, I am a helicopter pilot, and this is a helicopter pad. Marcie: Right. Paul: The question is, what are you doing here? Marcie: I was -- I was enjoying the view. Paul: Ah. Marcie: You know, but I guess you get to see it all the time, right? I have a pass. Paul: (looks at the pass) Yeah, it's a temporary with no name. Where'd you get it? Marcie: Well, I got it from -- well, yeah, I'm new here. I just started working today, and I just haven't had time to go and get my picture taken yet. Paul: Hmm. Do you have medical training? Marcie: No. No, I'm an administrative assistant. Paul: Oh. Oh. So, who do you work for? Marcie: Dr. Wallinoffski. Paul: Who? Marcie: Wallinschulski? Paul: I've never heard of him. Marcie: Well, I mean, you couldn't possibly know every single doctor that works here, now, could you? Paul pulls out his cell phone and dials a number. Paul: I'm not getting any reception. Marcie: I really don't know why you'd want to call Dr. Wallinowski anyway because, you know, he's a proctocologist, and it's not like he has anything for you to transport, so -- Paul: You know, I thought you worked at the police station.
Marcie: I do. I work both places. You know, you're being really, really nosy, ok? I can't afford college. It's really expensive. My scholarship doesn't cover everything, ok? Paul: Well, if you work for this doctor who's a proctologist, what are you doing up here? Marcie: I -- well, Dr. Wallincowski told me to acclimate myself with the hospital and, you know, take a little look around, know where everything is, and -- this is part of the hospital, isn't it? Right? Paul: Right. Well, take a good look. Here it is. You had enough? Marcie: What are you, security? Paul: Well, no, I just have to take off. You know, they really don't like it when I chop people's heads off. Marcie: You know, you actually have a cool job. Paul: Thanks. Marcie: So, where are they having you go? Paul: Anywhere they want me to. Marcie: Well, I don't want to keep you, so, up, up, and away. Paul: Actually, I have something I have to do first, but you coming? Marcie: No. I think I'm going to enjoy the view. Paul: Right. Marcie: Don't worry. I'll be gone by the time you come back, I promise. Paul looks at her obviously dissatisfied with her answers but Marcie stands confidently as if daring him to challenge her again. He leaves.
In Michael’s hospital room, the phone rings. He answers it. Michael: Hello? Marcie: Michael? Michael: Marcie. Where are you? Are you all right? Marcie: Yeah. Paul Cramer caught me on the roof. But I told him, just in case anyone asks, that I'm working for a proctocologist, ok? Michael: Wait, wait, wait, hold on a second. Why are you whispering? Marcie: So Paul won't catch me again. Listen -- Michael: Marcie, where are you? Marcie: I'm inside on the helicopter and -- Michael: Marcie! Marcie: It's ok. Listen, I snuck on when he went to make a phone call, and I found the manifest. Michael: Marcie, get out of there right now. Marcie: Ok, listen, I got to go anyway. He's coming. Michael: Marcie -- Marcie, will you -- Marcie: Got to crawl into the cargo bin. Bye.
Later, Marcie rushes into Michael’s room, humming. Marcie: I'm back! Michael: Marcie, thank god. I have been going out of my mind. Where you been? Marcie: I flew all the way to Hayes Hospital and back in the helicopter, and Paul never guessed. Michael: Ok, don't you ever, ever take a risk like that again, ok? This guy used to be in the military. He's a trained killer, Marcie, a trained killer! Marcie: Do you want to find out what I found out or not? Michael: Ok, what'd you get? Marcie: Well, Paul got off of the helicopter, right, and then I heard the nurse say to him that -- I -- I found out a lot. Paul strolls into the room. Paul: What exactly did you find out? Marcie and Michael are obviously shocked by his sudden appearance but they try to cover their tracks. Marcie: Well, see, I was just about to tell Michael that I found out a lot about the hospital. Like, did you know that the cafeteria burgers -- they're half the price that they are at Rodi's. Paul: Wow, wow. Marcie: Mm-hmm. Paul: Why is that so exciting? Marcie: Well, um -- Michael: Well, if that's what you're eating every day, you know, it is exciting because, you know, a penny saved, a penny earned, and all that good stuff. Marcie: There you go. Hey, I heard that you were going off somewhere on the helicopter. Paul: I did, I did. I'm back now. Michael: Great. So, what brings you by? Paul: You know, I just decided to stop by, see how the old leg is doing. Michael: Oh, well, it's doing. Thanks for stopping by. Paul: All right-ty. You take it easy. Michael: Will do. Paul: Yeah. Marcie: Bye. See you around. Paul leaves. Marcie: (rushes next to Michael) Oh, no, you don't think he's suspicious, do you? Michael: No, I think that if he knew that you'd stowed away on his flight, you'd already be in trouble. Marcie: Yeah, but he's certainly keeping an eye on us, isn't he? Michael: Well, until he knows what we know, I think we're ok. Marcie: Ok. Michael: So, what'd you find o?? Marcie: Well, Paul got off of the helicopter carrying a medical cooler. And then I heard the nurse say to him that there was a really rich European businessman -- he was all prepped for surgery and ready to go. Michael: What kind of surgery? Marcie: Well, he was about to have a heart transplant. He had to have been carrying the heart that was stolen here today from the hospital.
May 11, 2004 (Tuesday) In Long’s office, Paul and Long are talking. Dr. Long: Cramer! Are you listening? Paul: Yeah, yeah. You said I'm making another delivery today at Newark, right? Dr. Long: No, Atlantic City. There's been a last-minute change of plans. You're taking the shipment to a hospital there. Paul: You're not worried about John McBain hassling me? Dr. Long: I'm more worried about detective McBain's nosy brother, Michael.
In Michael’s hospital room, Marcie and Michael are discussing their options. Marcie: Michael, it's just -- it's horrible to even think about, you know? That Dr. Long could actually be selling transplant organs to people that need it. They're desperate. They're willing to pay whatever they need to. Michael: Well, I hate to say it, Marcie, but it's looking more and more like that's exactly what he's doing. And you and me -- we got to prove it. Marcie is looking out of the window at Long’s office. Marcie: I think we just have to tell your brother, Michael. Michael: He's just going tell us that we need more proof. Marcie: Well, all right. So then how do we get it? Michael: There's only one way. We got to break back into his office. Marcie: You've got to be kidding me, right? Why don't you break your other leg -- try jumping out of his window so you don't get caught! Marcie turns around and looks at Michael. Michael: What? What's going on? Marcie: Paul Cramer. He's in there right now with Dr. Long. Michael: If I could be a fly on the wall in that office -- Marcie: We could go eavesdrop. Michael: You could almost get caught again. Marcie: Michael -- Michael: Listen, it doesn't matter. Even if you go over there and you hear them talking about selling body parts, organs -- whatever -- it's not admissible, it's hearsay. Marcie: God, this is really frustrating. And I'm late for my shift at the police station, so I got to go. Michael: Well, I'll see you later. Marcie: All right. Listen, I'll see you when I get off, ok? Michael: All right. Marcie: And I'm really glad that you're getting out of here soon. I miss you. Michael: Yeah. Marcie: I can't wait to have you at home. Michael: Yeah, I'm really happy to be getting out of here, too. Although, if I'm not here, who's going to keep an eye on Dr. Shifty? Marcie: Listen, don't worry about it for a while, ok? We're going to get that proof. Marcie leaves.
Dr. Long: Oh, the shipment for Atlantic City will be ready to go within an hour. Have the chopper fueled and ready. Paul: What are you going to do about Michael McBain nosing around? Dr. Long: Listen, you're paid on a don't-ask, don't-tell basis. Paul: I need to know what to look out for. Dr. Long: You just leave Dr. McBain to me.
At Rodi’s, Paul approaches Natalie. Paul: Hey. Tell me you can get somebody to cover your shift. Natalie: Actually, I'm done. I'm just cleaning up. Why? Paul: Oh, well, I got a chopper run to Atlantic City, and I was hoping you'd give me the hometown tour. Natalie: Oh, you don't want to see my Atlantic City. Paul: Well, I don't care what we see, just as long as you're with me. So come on. Natalie: Sure, why not? Paul: All right. It'll be a blast. Natalie: I could use a blast. Paul: Yeah. Natalie: Let's go. Paul: Yep.
Long strolls into Michael’s room. Dr. Long: Oh, you're still here, I see. Michael: Yeah, yeah. They're checking me out soon. Dr. Long: Ah. So -- so you won't be back to work anytime soon, right? Michael: No, no. I guess I'm going have a lot of catch-up work to do. Dr. Long: Well, I don't see how that'll be possible. You've already missed your pediatric rotation, and -- well, I'm wondering how you'll ever catch up. Michael: I guess I'm just going to have to use every ounce of free time that I have, huh? Dr. Long: You know, when I come back, we need to have a talk about your future here at Llanview hospital. Michael: When you come back? Dr. Long: Yeah, I'm -- I'm off to the airport right now for a conference in Atlanta. I'll be there for the rest of the week. Michael: Really? You're leaving now? Dr. Long: Yeah, right now. In fact I'm late. So my car is waiting downstairs. Michael: Oh, yeah. Well, that's good, good. I'd just -- I'd love to wish you a healthy and happy trip. Dr. Long: Ah. Thanks. Long leaves. Michael reaches for the phone. At the police department, Marcie is working at her desk. The phone rings. Marcie: Llanview P.D. Michael: Marcie? Marcie: Michael, hi. Michael: You got to get somebody to cover your shift. I need you here right now. Marcie: Well, is something wrong? Michael: No, nothing's wrong. We just got the break we've been waiting for. Dr. Long -- he's out of his office for a while. He's going to be on vacation to Atlanta. We need to break into his office now.
On the roof, Natalie and Paul are kissing. Natalie: Um -- maybe we should get this cooler off to Atlantic City, huh? Paul: Yeah, yeah, probably. But, you know, once we drop it off, there's no rush. You know, we can stay all night if you're up for it. Natalie: You know, I have nothing to come back for. Let's party. Paul: Yeah. All right. Let's go.
Marcie wheels Michael close to Long’s office door. Marcie: All right, looks like the coast is clear. Now, this is the thing that I was telling you about, remember? I was telling you that -- I was telling the cop that I was doing research on how to pick a lock. Well, he let me borrow this. I just hope he doesn't find out why I'm really using it. Michael: Oh, it's for a good cause. Marcie: Well, look at that. It's already open. Guess I don't have to feel guilty about using it. Michael: Yeah. We'd better get inside before anybody sees us. Marcie: Ok. Shh! Be quiet! Marcie and Michael rummage through Long’s office—checking his desk, his file cabinet and so on. Marcie: Find anything yet?
Michael: No, not yet. You know what, though? The last time I was in here, this -- this thing over here was locked. Marcie: The main part? Michael: Yeah. I'm betting that what we're looking for is inside of there. Marcie: Well, luckily, I do have my lock-picking kit with me, now, don't I? The door swings open and Long is standing there. Dr. Long: Well, well. What do we have here?
