Episode 15 Things That Go Bump In The Night
MAY 18 (TUESDAY) At Jen’s house, Michael is sitting on the couch using a stick to try to scratch his foot. He is obviously frustrated and is struggling mightily. The phone rings. Marcie: I'm coming! I'll get it. Michael: Don't worry, I'm not getting up. Marcie: What are you doing? Michael: I'm scratching my toes. Marcie answers the phone. Marcie: Hello? Hello? Who's this? Marcie hangs up and looks over at Michael. Michael: Marcie, who was that? Marcie: I don't know. I mean, someone was there but they didn't say anything. It's -- this is the third hang-up we've had since you got back from the hospital. Marcie dials the phone but then looks disappointed. Marcie: The number's blocked. Michael: Come here, let me see that. Marcie brings the phone to Michael. Michael: (looks at the phone) You know what? They were probably trying to order a pizza. Marcie: You think? Michael: Yeah, the number's only one digit off from yours. Marcie: Yeah, but what if it wasn't? What if it was Dr. Long trying to intimidate us? Michael: You're worried about Dr. Long? Marcie: Of course I'm worried about him. Michael: Don't be. He thinks I'm off his case, you know? Probably really happy to have me out of the hospital. The doorknob of the front door jiggles. Marcie and Michael both freeze for a moment. Michael: Is that Jen? Marcie: Uh -- it shouldn't be. She's -- she's taking her final. Marcie goes over to the fireplace and grabs a poker. Michael: Marcie -- Marcie: Shh. Marcie brandishes the poker and rushes toward the front door. Michael: What are you doing? Marcie: Shh! The door opens and Marcie raises the poker up as if prepared to strike. Jen walks through the door. Michael: Marcie, no! Marcie: Oh – Jen looks at Michael and then sees Marcie behind the door. Jen: What is going on? Marcie: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Jen: What, did you think someone was breaking in? Marcie: Yes. Michael: Marcie saw a report on the news about home invasions and, well, she's a little paranoid. I never knew that about you. It's kind of cute. Marcie: Oh, stop. I thought -- I thought you were taking your final. I didn't think you'd be home for at least another hour. So how did it go? Jen: Well, I did the best I could. Marcie: Ok. Jen: So, are you still up for going out? I'm ready to party. Marcie: Jen, actually, I'd rather not. I think I'm going to stay here if -- if that's all right. Michael: No, it's not. You're going out.
Later, Marcie has changed clothes and is sitting on the couch next to Michael. Jen strolls into the room. Jen: Hey, if we're going to go, we should go. Jessica's probably there by now. Marcie: No, listen, go ahead. Michael: What are you talking about? You changed and everything! Marcie: I know, but I don't want to leave you alone. Michael: Look, Marcie, you've done nothing but take care of me since I got out of the hospital. Marcie: Yeah, and I've been doing a really horrible job at it. I just -- Michael: You have done a wonderful job at it, ok? You got the best bedside manner I'd ever seen. Marcie: Really? Michael: Really. Jen: Marcie, I really think you should let Michael get some rest. Marcie: Ok, but only if you really, really are ok with it. Michael: I'm fine with it. Listen, me and Mr. Scratchy will hold the fort down just fine, I promise. Marcie: Ok, all right. But we're not going to stay long, all right? Michael: Ok. Jen: Enjoy the peace and quiet. Michael: Yeah. Marcie: Hey. Michael: Have fun, you two! Marcie and Jen: Bye! Michael: I love you, sweetie. Marcie: I love you, too. Listen, I'm going to lock you in. Jen: (mocks Marcie) Love you, sweetie! Marcie laughs. Michael: Oh. Yes. Marcie and Jen leave. After they are gone, the doorknob to the front door is once again jiggled. Michael: Who's there? Marcie? Marcie, is that you? You forget something? Michael stares at the door.
At The Hook Up Club, Evangeline and Jessica are standing at the bar talking. Evangeline: Oh, God! Great, great. Jessica: It's ok. Here we go. Evangeline: I'm so sorry about that. I don't know what I'm thinking. What a mess. Jessica: Um -- listen, Evangeline, when the girls come, do you want to join us for a drink? Evangeline: You know what? I'm meeting a client here, so -- Jessica: Here? Evangeline: He picked the place. Go figure. You guys have fun. Jessica: Ok, see you later. Marcie and Jen rush into the club. Jessica: Well, there you are. I thought I was getting stood up. Marcie: Oh, I'm sorry, it's my fault we're late. Jen: I practically had to drag her here. She didn't want to leave a certain someone home alone. Jessica: Oh, well, then I completely understand. It's Girls' Night Out! Marcie: Sorry. Bartender: What can I get you lovely ladies this evening? Jen: Diet whatever. Marcie: Yeah, I'll have the same. Jessica: Me, too. Bartender: Hard drinkers, huh? Ok, coming up. Jen: There are so many hot guys here. It kind of makes me wish I was looking. Marcie: Oh, but you didn't stop looking because of Riley, though, right? Huh? Hmm? Jen: Riley and I are just friends, ok? I like being around him. It's easy. There are no games. And I'm not going anywhere near a relationship again until I know who I am and what I want. Bartender: All righty, here you go. Marcie: Oh, thanks. Bartender: Diet. Jessica: I'll -- I'll drink to that. Marcie: Hey, there's nothing wrong between you and Antonio, is there? Jessica: No.
In the meanwhile, Evangeline is talking to Antonio, who is keeping out of sight. Evangeline: Jessica's really concerned. I'm so sorry you have to keep this confidential. Antonio: Listen, I'm a cop. It's what I do, ok? It doesn't mean it makes my life any easier, but like I said, this needs to end on. So we're stuck here till they leave. Why here, anyway? Evangeline: My client is the accountant for this place, and he says they're accusing him of laundering drug money. But he doesn't know anything about it and I believe that, but I do think it's going on here. Antonio: Are you saying this is Federal? Evangeline: He said he's being framed by the woman who owns this place and that this bar is just a cover-up, it's just a front for the laundering operation.
Jessica standing by the jukebox when a man approaches her. Man: Know where I can get one dance? Jessica: There isn't a dance floor, Brian. Brian: We're not going to let that stop us, are we? I failed a history exam today. Shouldn't something good happen to me? Jessica: Well, maybe something good would happen if you studied more and danced less. Brian: I tell myself that every day, but somehow it just doesn't sink in.
Marcie and Jen are sitting at a table. Marcie is obviously distracted. Jen: Well, if you're that worried about it, just call him. Go ahead. Marcie: Ok. At Jen’s house, the phone rings. Michael answers it. Michael: Hello? Marcie: Hey. How are you? Michael: Uh, I'm good. What's up? Marcie: You sound funny. Michael: I was -- uh -- falling asleep. You kind of woke me up. Marcie: Oh, I'm sorry. I'm not really doing anything right today, huh? Michael: Sweetie, you do everything right, and I'm glad you called. But right now I want you to hang up, go have some fun. Marcie: Ok. Michael: I love you. Michael hangs up but then he hears something at the front door. He is obviously worried. He stands up with his crutches and walks to the door. There is a man standing out there talking on a cell phone. It’s John. Michael: Who's out there? John: "Who's out there?" It's your brother, jackass. Open the door. Michael: What are you doing skulking around outside my door? John: I wasn't skulking around anywhere. What are you talking about? I was about to knock and all of a sudden I got a call. You all right? Michael: Yeah, I'm fine. Come on in, Johnny. How you doing? John: Who'd you think was going to be at the door, Michael? Meanwhile at The Hook Up Club, Antonio is disturbed by the attention Jessica is receiving from Brian. He moves as if he is going to confront him but Evangeline puts her hand on his arm. Evangeline: Antonio, don’t. Jessica is perfectly capable of handling the situation herself. Jessica: Brian, I -- I think that you've had too much too drink. Brian: I know, I know. God, the guy you live with has got to be the luckiest guy in the world. Jessica: He is, and so am I. So I'll see you.
Evangeline tries to keep Antonio focused on the task at hand. Evangeline: That guy -- he tried to hit on me, like, five seconds ago. He's harmless. Antonio: That sonny, little twerp is the least of my worries. And besides, I thought you were tight with R.J. Evangeline: I am, even when the bad times make me forget about the good times. Antonio: Bad times with R.J.? Evangeline: Look; right now my concern is making sure this investigation doesn't compromise your relationship with Jessica. I don't want to be responsible for anything that makes her not trust you.
Jessica joins Marcie and Jen at the table. Jen: I thought you were going to dance with that guy. Jessica: I almost did. Marcie: You were going to dance with him? Jessica: Marcie, it's not like we were going to make out. We were just going to dance. It's not cheating. Jen: I would've danced with him. He was hot, wasn't he? Marcie: Yeah. He was. Bartender's kind of cute, too. Jen: Uh-huh. Marcie: But I'm not engaged. Jen: Joe and I were married. It didn't stop me. Oh -- I'm sorry. Jessica: That's ok. I mean you're trying to change. Jen: Emphasis on the word "trying." Jessica: Anyways, Marcie, what we're trying to say is you can be totally involved and committed to somebody and still find other people attractive. It's not cheating. A dance is just a dance. Marcie: I guess, but I don't know. I don't think I could dance with anyone else but Michael. Jen: True love. Jessica: Yeah, well, maybe it is. I don't know. You know, I know that I want to marry Antonio -- I really do -- but I'm just not ready yet, you know? I just wish that I could fast-forward to a point in my life where I don't get lost in his. Marcie: Well, I mean, maybe if you're afraid of losing yourself in him, you shouldn't marry him. Jen: Oh, come on. Every woman goes through that. God knows I have. What about you? You're totally into Michael, right? Marcie: Yeah. Jen: You think about him more than yourself? Marcie: Well -- Jen: You were so worried about him tonight; you didn't even want to come out.
John walks into the living room and sits on the couch. Michael follows him into the room. Michael: Yeah, I heard a noise, you know? It was probably a raccoon. Oh. So, what brings you by? Social call? John: No. I checked the flight records for the hospital medevac. So far, Dr. Long's got his bases pretty well covered. Michael: You got nothing? John: Nothing, but I'm working on it, Michael. I'm on it. Michael: Thanks. John: Hey, look, no raccoon stories. What's got you spooked right now? Michael: (arranges his crutches and lowers himself onto the couch) This -- this stupid -- ow -- stupid thing. I am so sick and tired of being helpless, you know? And Marcie, she's the best, you know? She's my girlfriend. She's not my maid; she's not my nurse. She's been right next to me 24 hours a day, seven days a week taking care of me. John: Well, I know you'd do the same thing for her, right? Michael: Of course I would. You know, it's a little difficult for her. I mean, the whole time I was in the hospital, she told me all she could think about was Al. John: Oh, Gabrielle’s son -- the guy that died, yeah. Michael: Yeah. Well, somehow she pulled herself out of it. John: She say how? Michael: I guess Marcie would say that every once in a while, something just comes along and pushes you in the right direction. You know, somehow she learned to live without Al. Does that make any sense to you? John: I think I'm getting the same push. I haven't made the leap, though. Michael: Take the leap, John. It'll be worth it.
Michael is asleep and wakes up to the sound of glass breaking. Michael: Marcie? He looks out and sees a window next to the front door has been shattered. He gasps.
Jen, Marcie and Jessica are staring at a poster advertising a male strip show coming to The Hook Up. A couple of people block their view and they shush them away. Jen: Get some taste. Jessica: Yeah -- I love denim. Jen: You want to come back? Marcie: These guys might be trying to work their way through school. Jessica: Hey, you could be right. Then maybe we should come back and support them. I could write a column in it for "Craze" magazine. Marcie: I -- I could work it into my novel. Jen: I could work it into my documentary somehow. Jessica: So, there you go. We have more than enough justification to come back for the show, and it's -- Jen: It's not like we're doing it for fun or because we want to look at hot bods. Marcie: Yeah. I mean, we would never objectify men -- Jen: No. Marcie: That way. Jessica: Not at all. Yeah, stop drooling. Let's get you home to your boyfriend. Come on. They leave.
Antonio breathes a sigh of relief that Jessica is gone. Antonio: Well, that was a close call. I'm glad she didn't see me. Evangeline: You know what, Antonio? You should just go home and spend some time with Jessica. I don't think there's anything happening here tonight anyway. There's a woman over there. I think she's second in command, the assistant manager. Let's go. Woman: No, Sara’s not hear yet, but she is going to flip if she finds out we're missing two strippers. The whole show was set. Yeah, well, these strip nights pay the bills for this joint. You've got to go out and find us two new hunks. No, that is not a request. Antonio: Well, doesn't sound like business is exactly booming. Evangeline: On the contrary, I think business here is doing just fine. But it is dirty money, and the woman that runs this place -- she's trying to use her connections to make my client the fall guy. Antonio: All right, fine, so you want me to stick around? Maybe I can find something out from the assistant manager. Maybe the owner will show up. Evangeline: Actually, I think she just gave us the perfect in. Antonio, how do you feel about taking your clothes off in front of a crowd of screaming women?
MAY 20 (THURSDAY) Michael hears a noise and investigates. He sees the broken window and looks out. Michael: Is anybody there? He goes back into the living room and dials the phone. He calls John who is standing in the commons area at the police station. John: McBain. Michael: Hey, it's me. John: What's up, Michael? Michael: I think somebody's stalking me, John. John: What makes you say that? Michael: Well, there were some hang ups earlier, and the front window got broken while I was asleep. John: So? Michael: So, it could be Dr. Long trying to scare me off. Is there anything you can do? John: Unfortunately, but without any proof, it's just a broken window and a couple of hang-ups. Michael: Dr. Long could be outside, prowling around and waiting to make his move. John: Michael, relax, all right? Dr. Long can't bother you tonight. I got him here in my office. We'll have a long talk about all of this.
In John’s office, he is sitting behind his desk and Long is sitting in a chair facing him. Dr. Long: You asked me to come down here and answer your questions, right? I have been extremely cooperative. John: Mm-hmm. Dr. Long: Those documents prove the organs being harvested are all completely legitimate. John: You think I've never seen manufactured documents before? Dr. Long: They are not manufactured. John: Bottom line is you come clean right now or I'm coming down to your office tomorrow with all the necessary paperwork. I'm going to make such a stink you won't believe it. And if we find one organ that was sold or moved illegally out the door -- Dr. Long: No, I am well aware of the penalty for that kind of -- John: You know what's going to happen? Dr. Long: I am well aware of the penalty for that kind of thing. Honest to god, this is so insulting. John: Yes, it is, but I think it's going to get worse. But for now, you're free to go. Think about tomorrow. See you around noon? Dr. Long: Fine. My attorney and I look forward to it.
In the meanwhile, Marcie and Jen return to Jen’s house. Michael is obviously very happy to see them. He sighs. Michael: Oh. Jen: (looks at the glass and the broken window) Hey. Marcie rushes over to Michael. Michael: Thank god you made it home. Marcie: Why wouldn't we? Michael: No reason. You guys didn't see anybody outside, did you? Marcie: No. Why? I mean, what happened? Jen: How did the window break? Michael: The wind kicked something up and must have broke it. Jen: You know, there's branches scraping it all the time. I'm actually surprised it hasn't happened already. Marcie: Really? Are you sure you didn't see somebody out there? Michael: No. I mean, yes -- yes, I'm sure that I didn't see anybody -- how was the club? Jen: I'll let Marcie tell you about that one. I'm going to go to bed. Marcie: Night. Jen: Good night. Michael: Good night, Jen. Jen leaves. Marcie: All right. Come on. I want to know what really happened. Michael: Well, the window really did just break itself out of the blue. I had this -- this is so stupid. I had this dream that dr. Long got in here while I was sleeping. Marcie: Why didn't you call me? Michael: I don't know. I called John. Marcie: Ok. Michael: Turns out Dr. Long was in his office. Marcie: You're kidding me. Michael: Yeah. The problem is Long is just going to come up with some other phony excuse. John can't push too hard, not without any real solid evidence. Marcie: That's it, Michael. I'm sick and tired of living like this, ok? Michael: Whoa, wait, whoa, what are you doing? Marcie: Well, if Dr. Long is in that office L.P.D. With Jhn right now, then that's the perfect opportunity for me to get the evidence that he needs to put him away.
Michael: Marcie, I don't -- Marcie: No, no, co on. Come on, all right? I'm sick of living like this, never knowing when that man is going to come after us next. Michael: Marcie, no! No way! Marcie: No, listen -- I want my life back, Michael, and my boyfriend. Michael: Marcie, you can't -- Marcie: See you later. Michael: You can't do this by yourself! Marcie: Bye. Marcie storms out. Michael tries to stop her but he gets tangled up in the wheelchair. Michael: Damnit!
Michael gets himself to his feet and strengthens his resolve. He balances himself on his crutches and then walks toward the front door. Michael: Ok, all right. Michael: You got to -- come on! You can do this. You have to do this. You have to do this for Marcie.
At the hospital, Marcie approaches a nurse. Marcie: Oh -- excuse me. I'm new here today, and I need to do some paperwork on donated organs -- where they're kept, how they're stored, how they're sent out. Do you know where I could find all of that information? Nurse: Down one floor, left at the elevator, and look for the door marked "transplant services." Marcie: Thank you. Nurse: Ok. Marcie: Thanks.
Marcie finds the transplant services area. She enters the room and looks around. There are shelves full of bottles and so forth. Marcie: God, it's really freezing in-n-n here. Marcie looks over everything she can and then the door opens. Long enters. Dr. Long: Can I help you? Marcie: Um -- I -- I was looking for an office. The nurse gave me some directions, and -- well -- I guess this isn't an office, right? Dr. Long: No, it's not. Marcie: Well -- ok, well, I'm -- I'm just going to be going. I'll -- Dr. Long: Oh, I don't think so. I think you're staying right here.
At Jen’s house, she is standing in the living room. The doorbell rings. Jen: Who is it? Lindsay: It's me, honey. Jen opens the door. Jen: What are you doing here? Lindsay: Can I just come in? Jen: Where's Rex? Wasn't he in your bed? Lindsay: No. He wasn't there. Jen: You weren't together tonight? Lindsay: Uh-uh. Jen: Which is why you're looking for him. And, of course, you had to come here. Lindsay: Well, anytime that he's not with me, I pretty much imagine that he's here sleeping with you. Jen: He's not sleeping here. The only people that are here are Marcie and Michael, because they're my friends, and they keep me from feeling desperate, like I need to run out in the night like you're doing. Maybe you need friends like that.
Meanwhile, in the hematology room, Long continues to threaten Marcie. Dr. Long: You're a terrible liar. You know that? You're just -- you're just looking for something you can use against me. Marcie: You're right. I'm looking for the heart that you stole. Dr. Long: Oh, that's a very serious charge. Marcie: I know that it was harvested tonight from a patient upstairs, I know that you have it, I know that you're planning to sell it, but guess what -- it's not going to work, because this time the cops -- they're going to be waiting for you. Dr. Long: Oh, too bad they're not here now.
Michael sees Dorian standing in the hallway at the hospital. He makes his way over to her. Michael: Hey. Have you seen Marcie? Dorian: No, I haven’t. Why? Michael: She came here to get some proof to nail dr. Long with, and -- well, I have to find her before she gets caught, you know? Dorian: Look, I'm sorry. I have a good friend in there, Viki Davidson, and she's ill, and I really can't think about anything else at the moment. Michael: Oh -- of course. I'm -- I'm sorry. Is she going to be ok? Dorian: I don't know. I really don't know. Michael: Ok.
Meanwhile at Jen’s, Lindsay’s drama continues. Jen: So, Rex isn't here. I think you'd better go. Lindsay: That's not the only reason I came over here, you know? I also happen to really miss you. Jen: Whatever. Lindsay: You don't miss me just a little bit? Jen: When you can stop letting guys like Rex jerk you around, then I'll be here. But until then, don't make me miss you more than I already do. Lindsay: You don't have to miss me. I'm right here. Jen: Please just go! Lindsay: You know that friend that you said that I need? I wish it could be you.
In the hematology room, Marcie tries to bluff her way out of what is now obvious to her is a dangerous situation. Marcie: You can't trap me in here. Michael knows that I'm in here, and so does his brother, the chief of detectives. Dr. Long: You're bluffing. Marcie: No. If you trap me in here, they will find out, I promise you. Dr. Long: Oh, I don't see how. By the time they find you, you'll be dead. Long grabs Marcie. Marcie: Ugh -- come on!
At the police station, Nora is in John’s office. Daniel Colson comes in carrying a file. Daniel: Look, I'm sorry. It's not my fault I stood you up. It's his. Nora: Oh. Daniel: It's this file on Dr. Long. I couldn't put it do.. Nora: Oh, all right, you win. I've blown off a few dates doing that myself. Daniel: Look, is there any way I can make it up to you, tomorrow night, maybe? Nora: Oh, I'm sorry. I'll be sleeping with someone else tomorrow night. Daniel: Really? Nora: Yes. Daniel: Oh, that sounds like a lot of fun. Nora: It will be -- in a tent, on a camping trip -- fire scouts camping trip with Matthew. Daniel: Is Bo going with you? Nora: No. Why? Daniel: No reason. Nora: Fine. John: Can we talk about Dr. Long just for a moment? Daniel: Hn, there's nothing in that file to arrest him for. John: How did I know you were going to say that to me? Daniel: Look, all I see is a suspect with no probable cause. The judge will ask me how long I've been out of law school. Nora: What about his pilot -- Paul Cramer? Can you turn him? John: Don't worry. He'll screw up. They always do. At Jen’s the phone rings. Jen answers it. Jen: Hello. John: Hi, it's -- it's John McBain. I'm sorry for calling so late. Is my brother there? Jen: He and Marcie went to bed a little while ago. Should I wake him up? John: No, no. Let them sleep. I just wanted to make sure they were home safely. Thanks.
In the hematology room, Marcie gets up. She tries the door. It’s locked. Marcie: Hello! She pounds on the door. Marcie: Hello. Can anyone hear me? Please, can somebody please get me out of here? She walks over to a couple of bottles that are on the floor. She squats down and tries to pick them up. Marcie: Oh, great. My hands are turning blue.
Michael spots Long in the hallway at the hospital and rushes up to him. Michael: Dr. Long. You haven't seen Marcie, have you? Dr. Long: Well, no, of course not. Why would she be here this time of night? Michael: Well. Looks like somebody didn't make it. What do you got there? A heart? A very expensive heart, maybe? So, who's the lucky recipient? Long glares at Michael.
