Episode 32

"Over My Dead Body!"
January 6 & 7, 2005

Thursday,  January 6, 2005

Marcie rushes up to Hayes in a corridor at the hospital.

Marcie: Hayes.

Hayes: Hey, there you are.

Marcie: Hi. I'm so sorry I'm late. I thought since I was at the hospital, I might try to get my old job back.

Hayes: Why?

Marcie: Exactly. It was a totally lame idea. I mean, I don't know why I expected anyone here to hire me back after how I left this place.

Hayes: Marcie, shh --

Marcie: Did I ever tell you that story --

Hayes: Hey, you don't need a job now. You're an author.

Marcie: Yeah, but my book doesn't get published for another month, and I've maxed out all my credit cards. Do you know how much money I owe?

Hayes: Money is not an issue. Look, a speaker’s bureau is interested in setting up some engagements for you to talk about your book -- you know, like what inspired you, how long it took you to write it, that sort of thing. But you have to be ready.

Marcie: I am ready. I'm ready now.

Hayes: Not quite. Marcie, these people that we're talking to are a little bit concerned about your image.

Marcie: It's about my weight, right? It's always about my weight. That's always what it's about. Well, I'm sorry, I'm not going to starve myself again, ok?

Hayes: Look, you don't have to. That's why I wanted you to meet me here at the hospital, so we can meet Dr. Arliss.

Marcie: Who?

Hayes: Arliss. He comes very highly recommended, the best in his field.

Marcie: Uh-huh. And what field is that?

Hayes: Cosmetic surgery.

In a hospital room, Marcie and Hayes continue to discuss his plan.

Marcie: Look, I know I'm chubby, ok, but I'm pretty. And I happen to like my nose. And don't you think I'm about 40 years too young for a face-lift? All right, maybe 35. I may be pushing it a little bit.

Hayes: Marcie, look, you have a beautiful face.

Marcie: Well, then I don't understand why you're asking me to come here today.

The door opens and a door walks in.

Doctor: Hi there.

Hayes: Hi, Dr. Arliss. Hayes Barber. We spoke on the phone.

Dr. Arliss: Right.

Hayes: And this is the young lady I was telling you about, Marcie Walsh.

Marcie: Hi.

Dr. Arliss: Nice to meet you both. So, Ms. Walsh, I understand you are interested in liposuction?

Marcie whips around and looks at Hayes.

Marcie: You want me to get liposuction? I can't -- why didn't you tell me what this was about before we came here?

Hayes: I didn't want you to overreact.

Dr. Arliss: You really should have informed Ms. Walsh.

Hayes: Yeah. I thought if Dr. Arliss could explain --

Marcie: I am not going to get liposuction, ok? Just the word creeps me out!

Hayes: Marcie, just -- just --

Marcie: No, have you ever seen any of those medical shows? It's really --

Hayes: Dr. Arliss, could you please reassure her?

Dr. Arliss: Now, we don't look at this as a method of weight loss. The -- the goal of liposuction is to contour the body.

Marcie: Contour?

Dr. Arliss: Mm-hmm. Now, an ideal candidate is someone whose weight is within normal boundaries, but where we find little pockets of excess fat in different places.

Hayes: And how soon could Marcie have this done, doctor?

Dr. Arliss: You know, generally, there's a huge waiting list. But I do know that we had a couple of cancellations for next week, so we could possibly fit you in then. Why don't you talk it over with your boyfriend, and you let us know, all right?

Marcie: No, no, no, he's not my boyfriend, ok? Michael was my boyfriend. You don't want to hear about that, so forget it.

Dr. Arliss: Nice meeting you both.

Arliss leaves.

Hayes: Marcie, what do you think?

Marcie: I don't know. Ok, first of all, it's got to at least be $1,000. It's got to be.

Hayes: Yeah, but it's a non-issue. I'll get another advance from our publisher.

Marcie: Yeah, even if you get another advance -- even if I could afford it -- it's gross, Hayes, ok? It's weird. It's painful.

Hayes: Marcie, Marcie, just -- just think about it. Think about how fantastic you'll look at your publishing party -- nice, slim hips, a tight stomach. And the confidence that it'll give you? That -- that breeds success. Don't you see? You can have everything you ever dreamed of.

Marcie and Hayes are sitting in a booth at Capricorn.

Marcie: Oh, thanks.

Hayes: Listen, Marcie, I know that I've been pushing you about the whole image thing. But, you know, I didn't make the rules.

Marcie: I know.

Hayes: You know, if you want to make money on the book tour and help promote the book sales, you've got to look your best.

Marcie: Listen, I know you're right, ok, but I just -- I don't know -- I wish it didn't matter, ok? It should be about the book, right?

Hayes: I'll call Dr. Arliss and let him know you'll take that opening for liposuction.

Michael leans over the top of the booth.

Michael: Over my dead body.

Later, Marcie and Michael are sitting in the booth together.

Michael: Tell me you are not really considering this.

Marcie: I don't know yet.

Michael: Well, you know there are risks involved with this. I'm sure that Dr. Arliss told you that.

Marcie: Yeah, he did.

Michael: And it's not a miracle cure, Marcie. I mean, you can't expect --

Marcie: What? Look like a supermodel overnight, Michael?

Michael: You know, Marcie, that's not what I meant.

Marcie: This isn't easy for me, ok? But the bottom line is that it's my body, so it's my decision. Besides, I really don't understand why you care. We broke up.

Michael: That doesn't mean that I stopped loving you.

A moment later, Marcie is now standing away from the booth.  Michael comes up behind her.

Michael: I tell you that I'm still in love with you, and you say nothing?

Marcie: That's not the issue, Michael, ok? It never was.

Michael: Then what is the issue?

Marcie: The fact that we don't trust each other. Or how about the fact that we don't accept each other's differences?

Michael: I'm trying, Marcie. I'm worried about you.

Marcie: You know, Hayes says that the only reason you don't want me to change how I look is because you're afraid of losing me to some other guy.

Michael: Well, I guess that couldn't be any worse than losing you to a dead guy.

Marcie: You didn't lose me to Al.

Michael: Look, I'm not bringing it up because I'm jealous. Ok, I was jealous, but I'm not now.

Marcie: Well, then why are you bringing it up now?

Michael: Because Al has been with us the entire time we've been together. I know that. Used to really bother me. I'm asking you to imagine that it's him talking to you right now. If you won't listen to me about not letting Hayes run your life, listen to Al.

Marcie: How am I supposed to listen to Al, Michael?

Michael: Well, Al believed in you, right?

Marcie: Yes.

Michael: Even better than that, he made you believe in yourself. Now, everything that this Hayes guy is telling you to do goes completely against that. Ask yourself, Marcie, would al want you to make yourself sick? Would al want you to have an operation just so that you can change the way your body looks?

Marcie: Hayes is just trying to help.

Michael: You didn't answer the question. Forget about what I think about Hayes. What would Al think about him?

Marcie: Al is gone. And if even if he was here -- ok, you know what? You're probably right. He probably wouldn't have liked Hayes. But he would have faith in me. He would trust that I would do what's right for me, Michael. Can you say the same thing?

Michael: I don't know. But I do know that I can't change the way I feel, and I think that you are making a huge mistake with this guy Hayes.

Marcie: Yeah, I know you do. But I'm not your problem anymore, Michael.

Michael: Sweetie, you were never my problem.

Michael’s pager beeps.  He glances at the screen.

Michael: It's the hospital. I got to go. Think about what I said?

Marcie: Sure.

Michael leaves.

Hayes: Hey, Marcie. Sorry that took so long. I got a phone call.

Marcie: Mm-hmm.

Hayes: Is everything ok?

Marcie: Yeah. Yeah. Sure. You know what? Let's order.

They sit in the booth.  When a waitress walks close by Hayes calls out to her.

Hayes: Excuse me.

Waitress: What can I get you?

Hayes: Can we have two Cobb salads?

Marcie: Yeah, and I'll have a pecan pie.

Waitress: Ok.

Hayes: Marcie, you can't --

Marcie: I can do whatever I want.
