Episode 34

Dr. Death & The Killing Club
January 18 & 20, 2005

 Tuesday, January 18, 2005

At the Hallowed Grounds Coffee Shop, Jen and Marcie are talking.

Jen: I can't believe anybody would think Michael’s capable of murder.

Marcie: You know, that's not even the problem. You know, Michael is on probation at the hospital, so if the hospital finds out that he's connected in any way to Tico Santi's murder, then he's finished.

Jen: That is so unfair.

Marcie: I know. You know what that's like.

Jen: I didn't kill Paul, but they made me go through the lineup and everything, and now they've arrested rex, and he didn't do anything, either. Guess your baggage just follows along with you. The good thing is, is that Michael doesn't have any baggage, he's a good guy, and he's going to get through this.

Marcie: I hope so.

Jen: You haven't said one word about your book.

Marcie: What?

Jen: "The Killing Club"?

Marcie: Oh, that.

Jen: Future bestseller by Marcie Walsh -- ring a bell?

Marcie: You know, I -- I don't know. I just -- I guess I can't think of anything else with Michael’s future on the line.

Jen: And you're not together.

Marcie: No.

Jen: Ok. I'm your best friend, so I’m going to say this -- you're blowing it.

Marcie: Me?

Jen: Yeah.

Marcie: No, Jen, that's not fair, ok? We both decided. Besides, it's over.

Jen: No, it's far from over. And it is obvious to everyone except for the two of you that you love each other just as much as you always have.

Marcie: It wasn't working.

Jen: Then fix it.

Marcie: There's too many things to fix.

Jen: Then get rid of them.

Riley walks into the coffee shop followed by Michael. Marcie and Michael seem somewhat uncomfortable when they spot each other.

Riley: I didn't know you ladies were going to be here.

Jen: It's ok.

Marcie: You know, I -- I was just leaving, really.

Michael: No. No, no, no. You know what? That's ok. I just came to get a coffee, and then I’m -- I'm going to go, actually.

Jen: Riley, didn't you want to read me those lyrics to the new song?

Riley: Hmm?

Jen: You know, the new -- the new song?

Riley: You said the new song? Yeah, come on. I'm sorry.

Jen and Riley walk to the other side of the room.

Marcie: That wasn't too obvious.

Michael: No.

Marcie: So, what's going on?

Michael: I'm hanging in there. I haven't gotten a call from the hospital, so I guess that's a good thing.

Marcie: Yeah. Yeah, I -- i can't believe that you could get in trouble for something that you didn't do.

Michael: I know. Wrong place, wrong time, you know? I was on duty when Tico Santi died, they find a piece of my latex glove --

Marcie: Well, you know, jen was saying before that you're one of the good guys. You know, she's right. Look, I know you're going to get through this, ok? I believe in you.

Michael: Thanks for the vote of confidence.

Marcie’s cell phone rings.

Michael: Hayes?

Marcie: Yeah.

Michael: You better get it.

Marcie: No, he can wait.

Michael: It's really ok. Go ahead.

Marcie: I said he can wait. It's ok.

Marcie’s cell phone rings again.

Jen glances over at Marcie and Michael

Jen: I hope they make it.

Riley: Me, too.

Jen: I mean, two months ago she had everything. She had a great job, a great boyfriend, great confidence in herself, and now this slimy agent came along and she doesn't think she's good enough or pretty enough.

Riley: Well, hey, sounds like someone I used to know.

Jen: What?

Riley: You figured it out. Marcie will figure it out, too.

Marcie: You know, my book, it's coming out in a couple weeks. But the truth is I can't wait for it to be over.

Michael: What are you talking about? You should be excited. You're getting everything you ever wanted.

Marcie: Am I?

Michael: Sure, you are.

Marcie: How come I don't feel like it? I feel messed up and -- and lost.

Michael: Listen to me. You are a strong, intelligent, beautiful woman, and don't you let anybody tell you otherwise.

Marcie’s cell phone rings again.

Marcie: Why can't he just leave me alone?

Michael: You know, you should probably get that. It could be important.

Marcie’s phone continues to ring.

Michael: Go ahead.

Marcie: Ok. Hello. Yes, I know -- I know that you called. I've just been busy, that's all.

Michael: Go ahead, go ahead.

Marcie: Ok. Yeah, I -- yeah, I have a couple minutes. Mm-hmm.

Jen and Riley get their coffee and go to sit on a bench.

Jen: Yeah, I guess me and Marcie do have a lot in common.

Riley: Did have a lot in common.

Jen: Well, Riley, it's not that easy to get rid of that feeling, you know? No matter what anybody else tells you, you always feel like you're going to lose what you love, you know, you're going to do something or say something to make that happen.

Riley: You're never going to lose me.

Jen: Riley --

Riley: Shh, shh. Never.

Michael watches as Marcie talks on the phone then his cell phone rings. He answers it.

Michael: Dr. McBain.

Michael listens for a few seconds to whoever is on the phone then breaks the connection and walks out of the coffee shop.

Marcie continues to talk to Hayes on the phone.

Marcie: I heard you. Yes, Monday at 3:00. I will be there. Ok, bye.

Marcie breaks the connection and then looks around and sees that Michael is gone.  She is obviously upset that he is gone.  She walks to the coffee shop counter.

Marcie: Hi. Can I have two brownies with whipped cream and fudge and a cherry on top? You know what? Make that three, to go. Thanks.

Thursday, January 20, 2005

Jessica is sitting at a table at The Palace Restaurant with papers spread in front of her.  Marcie walks in, spots her and walks over to her.

Marcie: Oh. Jessica?

Jessica: Marcie.

Marcie: Hi.

Jessica: What's wrong?

Marcie: Well, I was wondering if you knew anything about the article in "The Sun."

Marcie hands Jessica a copy of The Sun with the headline: Dr Death? There is a picture of Michael under the headline.

Jessica: No, I don't work there anymore. I went back to "The Banner."

Marcie: Oh.

At the hospital, Viki gets off the elevator and spots Michael just as he is entering a patient’s room. She calls out to him but he doesn’t hear her.  She stands outside and watches the exchange between Michael and his patient.

Michael: Mr. Beaman, how are you today? I'm Dr. McBain. I'm going to be checking your I.V. Lines.

Mr. Beaman: No, don’t.

Michael: I'm sorry, sir. You have nothing to worry about. I assure you this is very routine.

Mr. Beaman: Don't you touch me. I don't want to die like your other patient.

Michael: Sir, that is ridiculous. I did not kill anyone.

Mr. Beaman: You're Dr. Death.

Paige gets off of the elevator and walks toward Viki.  Viki reaches out and grabs her arm.

Viki: Dr. Miller, I'm sorry. Could you go in there, please?

Paige glances into the room as Michael continues to try to calm Mr. Beaman’s fears.

Mr. Beaman: And I won't be your next victim. I want a doctor without a criminal record, please!

Michael: Sir, I don't have a criminal record.

Paige walks into Mr. Beaman’s room.

Paige: Don't worry. Don't worry, ok? Nothing's going to happen to you while you're under our care. I promise you that. Please, just relax, take a deep breath, all right? That's right. Good. You all right? Ok, good. Another doctor will be in to see you shortly.

Mr. Beaman: Thanks.

Paige leads Michael out into the hallway and closes the door.  Viki stands in front of the door.

Michael: Why is another doctor seeing my patient?

Paige: Clearly he's concerned about what happened with Tico Santi.

Michael: I wasn't responsible for that. The hospital board exonerated me.

Paige: Well, that was before they discovered the new evidence.

Michael: That piece of glove? You said that you believed I didn't do it.

Viki steps forward and hands Michael a copy of The Sun.

Viki: Unfortunately, things have become a little more complicated since then. And the board has just met to determine what to do about the allegations that have been leveled against you in that article.

Michael: I don't believe this. Yeah, um -- I'm sorry. I have to speak to the board myself.

Viki: I'm sorry, Dr. McBain. It's too late. We've already made a decision.

At The Palace, Marcie is sitting across from Jessica.

Marcie: I feel so bad for Michael.

Jessica: You still really love him, don't you?

Marcie: Yeah. We just -- we haven't been connecting.

Jessica: Yeah, well, I know what that's like. Um -- Marcie, I -- I’m sorry. I just -- I really have to work. Can I call you later and we'll talk about this?

Marcie: Oh, yeah. Yeah, sure, no problem. I'm sorry.

Jessica: No, no.

Marcie: "Police still investigating elevator crash. Who was the intended victim?"

Jessica: Antonio could've been killed and I -- I’m using it as research. I'm determined to find out who did it.

Marcie: Hmm. So I guess we're in the same boat, then, huh? I mean, I know that you still love Antonio and you guys haven't been connecting for a long time now, either.

Jessica: Yeah, well, maybe you -- you can't see a relationship for what it's worth until it's over. I mean, you know how it is -- you spend all your time together and you only see what you want to see, I guess.

Meanwhile back at the hospital, Viki is hitting Michael with some bad news.

Viki: I'm very sorry, Dr. McBain, but we voted to suspend you.

Michael: Well, you can't do that. I haven't done anything wrong. Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"?

Viki: We're not accusing you of anything.

Michael: You're taking my job away!

Paige: Michael, this isn't helping your case.

Viki: Actually, you know, he's right. It's not fair. Unfortunately, now that the newspapers have gotten a hold of this story, this scandal is going to affect everyone who works here.

Paige: Well, she's right. I mean, look at this patient. He's only the first.

Michael: Mrs. Davidson, please. I need to work.

Viki: I understand that, but the board is very concerned that the pressure you're under will affect your performance. And our first obligation as the board has to be to protect this hospital and you from another accident.

Michael: Tico Santi's death was not an accident. I feel as bad about this whole thing as anybody else, but it was not my fault.

Paige: Michael, no one is saying that you're not a good doctor.

Viki: I agree. I know from experience that you are very caring.

Paige: Yeah, personally, you know, I am behind you 100%. But I can't protect you over the needs of our patients.

Michael: (sighs and looks very sad) I guess I can't say anything else, can I?

Viki: No. I'm sorry.

Michael: Well, I'll go clean out my locker.

Michael walks away.  Viki turns to Paige.

Viki: Oh, dear. But it had to be done, didn't it?

Paige: Yeah, well, Bo is in the same position. He can't ignore the evidence against Michael, even though he knows what it would do to john. You know, my -- my shift is over. I think I'm going to go tell Bo about what happened.

Viki: You and Bo have become very close, haven't you? I'm really happy for both of you.

Paige: Well, thank you. It means a lot to me.

Viki: Oh --

Paige: No, it does. It seems like all of Llanview is rooting for Nora and Bo to get back together again. On oh. Including you?

Viki: No, no. It's just that I’ve known them both, you know, a very long time and -- and i'm close to both of them, you know. But they certainly know their own minds very well, don't you think?

Paige: Yeah. Yeah.

Viki: Well, good night, Dr. Miller.

Back at The Palace, Marcie and Jessica continue their conversation.

Marcie: So I guess I was right. We're facing the same situation.

Jessica: No, not exactly. Huh. Antonio pushed me away. He didn't want me in his life anymore.

Marcie: I shut Michael out the same way. Maybe if he'd fought harder, we still might be together.

Marcie spots Michael as he walks into the restaurant.  Jessica looks around and sees Michael.

Jessica: Go talk to him, Marcie.

Marcie nods, gets up and rushes over to Michael.

Marcie: Michael? Michael? Hi.

Michael: Hi.

Marcie: I saw the article. I'm so sorry.

Michael: Yeah, well, you know, sticks and stones, right?

Marcie: Yeah. You know, I'm sure it'll -- it'll just all blow over soon.

Michael: I really hope so, you know?

A fellow doctor approaches Michael.

Man: I just got done with my shift. I heard those jerks suspended you. The entire staff is behind you, Mike, 100%.

Michael: Hey, thanks a lot.

The man leaves.

Marcie: Why didn't you tell me, Michael? I'm so -- I'm sorry.

Marcie reaches up to touch Michael’s face and he leans into her hand but then she draws it away when she seems to remember they are no longer a couple.

Marcie perches on a stool at the bar and Michael leans over her.  They are looking at The Sun.

Michael: You know, John's on the case, so I should be back to work in no time. Besides, I can use the sleep. So don't worry about me.

Marcie: But I am worried about you, Michael. I know you. Being a doctor means everything to you.

Michael: It's the only thing.

Marcie: Yeah, and look -- you gave up so much to become a doctor.

Michael: I left home, I didn't see my family for years. I love medicine, Marcie. (looks at Marcie longingly) My career isn't everything, right? (leans in to kiss Marcie)

Hayes rushes into the restaurant and spots Marcie.

Hayes: There she is!

Marcie: Hayes. What -- what are you doing here?

Hayes: I have something to show you.

Hayes shows Marcie a newspaper.

Marcie: "Great things are on the horizon for first-time novelist Marcie Walsh"! Hey, I -- I guess didn't do so bad after all, right?

Hayes: I knew you could do it.

Michael: Yeah, so did I, Marcie. Congratulations.

Marcie: Thank you so much. This is wonderful.

Hayes shows Marcie a magazine. Michael turns away from them and looks off into the distance as Marcie and Hayes talk in the background.

Hayes: Hey, that's not it. Look at this -- look at this, too. According to The Pennsylvania Review of Books, "'The Killing Club’ goes far beyond chick lit by introducing us to a new kind of heroine -- smart, sassy, and bossy with a voice all her own."

Marcie: Oh --

Hayes: "Look for 'The Killing Club' in your local bookstore around Valentine's Day."

Marcie: I can't even believe this! This is so amazing!

Michael looks hurt that once again he has been shutout.
