Episode 28 Beauty Knows No Pain
December 15, 2004 At Rodi’s, Daniel is standing at the bar. Riley comes up behind him. Riley: I see your future Daniel: Hey, son. Riley: Behind my past Daniel: Riley? Riley: Hey, hey. I didn't see you. Daniel: I know. Hey, that sounded pretty good, the little bit I heard. Riley: Yeah, it's for Jen. I'm trying to cheer her up a bit. Daniel: Oh, what's going on? Riley: She's not saying, but I'm pretty sure something's bothering her. Daniel: Yeah. Yeah, I kind of noticed that, too. Riley: You did? Daniel: Well, the other night when I ran into you and jen with Lindsay, jen seemed kind of rattled by something. It was when Paul Cramer’s murder was brought up. Riley: I'll tell you what's probably bothering her is you accusing her of murder.
At the Serenity Springs gym, Marcie is walking on a treadmill. Jen: You almost done? Marcie: No, not even close. Jen: How long you going to stay? Marcie: Till I’ve reached my goal. Jen: Which is what, running a marathon? Marcie: Well, Hayes says I have to look good for when I promote "The Killing Club." Jen: You can tell Hayes you look good the way you are. Marcie: Thanks. But, no, I definitely have room for lots of improvement. Jen: Did your agent order you to lose weight? Marcie: No, Hayes just wants me to be the best me that I can be. He got me a personal trainer and he got me a stylist. We've been going shopping for lots of slenderizing clothes, lots of black. Jen: Marcie, you don't have to dress like a ghoul. And you don't have to work out like a maniac, either. You wrote a great book. All you got to do is go out there and be you. Marcie: Well, Hayes says that beauty brings in the bucks, you know? And he works in the publishing business, so he knows these things, right? Jen: You ok? Marcie: Yeah! Yeah, I'm great. You know, I just think I should take a little break, that's all. Jen: Well, as far as I’m concerned, if beauty brings in the bucks, then you've got it made. You're going to rake it in. Marcie: You know what? You're really sweet. But you're my friend. You have to say that. Jen: Well, ask Michael. He'd say the same thing. Does he know how much time you're spending at the gym? Marcie: No. Jen: Have you told him about this crazy workout schedule? Marcie: No, ok, and I don't want you to tell him, either!
At the hospital, Paige is attending to a patient. Michael walks up. Paige: No, you know, I think the wound is healing just fine. We can get rid of those stitches today, all right? I'll be right back. Michael: Dr. Miller? Was the schedule changed? Because I could've sworn I was supposed to see Cristian Vega this morning. Paige: I'm sorry, I thought one of the nurses would've told you. Michael: All right, well, listen, if you want to take sutures out, be my guest. I'm having a hard time understanding how you got stuck with the sunrise shift. I mean, you must have really gotten under somebody's skin. Paige: I was asked to come in early. I'll be going on your rounds with you today, Michael. Michael: You're checking up on me. Paige: Look, you have to answer questions today to the board about Tico Santi's death. It's going to be a very stressful day for you. I'm just going to help you out, take a little bit of the burden off your shoulders. Michael: And, what, make sure that I don't kill any more patients?
Back at Rodi’s, Daniel and Riley continue to talk. Daniel: I didn't accuse Jen of anything, riley. I questioned her, yeah. Riley: Why? Dorian lord has already been arrested for Cramer’s murder. Daniel: I guess you haven't read the news today. They're reopening the investigation. Riley: What about that witness? Daniel: Well, she didn't actually see the murder, and the rest of the evidence is all circumstantial. Riley: But you can go to court on circumstantial evidence. You said that. Daniel: Not if I don't believe the defendant is guilty. Look, Riley, I think you'd better prepare yourself for the possibility that jen will be questioned for this again. Riley: She told the police everything she knows. Daniel: Did she? Riley, you know she met with Cramer shortly before he was murdered, several times. I mean, you told me yourself you saw her in his room. Riley: He was blackmailing her, dad! Daniel: Yeah, yeah. You know what that means? That means she has a motive. And she's also never fully accounted for her whereabouts the night of the murder. Riley: All right, I get the point. I don't care how it looks. She didn't do this. I know her. Daniel: Are you sure about that?
Back at the gym, Jen continues to try to get Marcie to see reason. Jen: Michael will say you're pushing yourself too hard, and that's why you haven't told him. Marcie: Jen, we have enough problems already. Jen: Because of the book still? Marcie: I guess so. I don't really know. You know, I've just been so busy with the book about to be published that i still don't have any time for him. Jen: Well, he has to know this book stuff's not going to last forever, right? Marcie: Normally, I think he would. He's just -- he's been under a lot of stress lately and he's having a really hard time. You know, he was the doctor on duty the day Tico Santi was murdered. Jen: I think the two of you just need some quality time together, outside of Llanview maybe. Marcie: You know what I wish? I wish, I wish we could do it today, but he's working 36-hour shifts and i have to finish my workout, and then i have to go get highlights and a chemical peel and all these crazy things. Listen, I got to hurry up, ok? I'll see you later. Whoa. Jen: Have you eaten today? Marcie: Yeah. Jen: What did you have, a cup of coffee? Marcie: I had breakfast and I had some -- some cottage cheese. Jen: Marcie, are you on some kind of crazy crash diet? Marcie: No! No, I'm just -- I'm just eating less, that's all. Jen: How much less? Marcie: Jen, come on, I can afford to miss a couple of meals. Jen: What? Marcie: It's no big deal! Jen: Wrong, Marcie, it is a big deal.
At the hospital, Michael bristles at Paige’s attempts to explain why he is under increased scrutiny. Paige: Look, the chief of medicine was concerned that you'd have a lot on your mind today with the board hearing. Michael: I still don't need somebody standing over my shoulder. Paige: You lost your first patient. Michael: I didn't lose Tico Santi. Paige: Regardless of the circumstances, the patient died while under your watch. Look, don't tell me that doesn’t. I know because I’ve been there. You start second-guessing everything, Michael. Michael: Tico Santi was murdered.` His death had absolutely nothing to do with his medical care! All of this is just another excuse to hang me out to dry. Man: Dr. Miller. The board's ready for you, Dr. McBain. Michael: Yes, sir. Paige: Thank you. Thank you. Paige goes into Cristian’s room. Paige: Hi. Cristian, you know, I was going over your medical chart before your appointment, and I noticed that, aside from your stab wound and your concussion, you did have a previous injury. You want to tell me how you hurt your ribs? Cristian: Nothing to tell. I'm fine now. Paige: Ok. All right. What about your headaches? Cristian: Who told you that? Paige: Your wife phoned me earlier. She's worried about you. I just want to make sure that we don't have anything to worry about.
At Rodi’s, Riley tries to get Daniel to reconsider his attitude about Jen. Riley: You're wrong about Jen, dad. I know her. She couldn't kill anybody. She couldn't. Daniel: Riley, years of experience have taught me that anyone is capable of anything under the right circumstances. Maybe it was self-defense. There could be all kinds of reasons, especially considering the victim, but -- you're my son. You're my concern. And that's why i need you to ask yourself, how well do you really know this girl? Jen: I can't even trust myself. I always screw everything up. God, I’m just so angry, sometimes I just am walking around, because right now i don't know what I'm going to do next! Riley: I know you've done things you're not proud of, ok, but I also know you don't want to do them again.
At the gym, Jen tries to get Marcie to see reason. Jen: Maybe I already have. Why are you giving in to pressure from that agent, anyway? Marcie: Because he's the expert. Jen: Well, you're the only one that knows what's right for you. Marcie: Jennifer, nobody is that secure, ok? Look, I'm not -- I'm not trying to be you. I just -- I just want to be in a little better shape, ok? You know, Hayes says that you have to do all these TV interviews and he says the camera adds, like, 10 pounds. Jen: He's exaggerating. Marcie: Yeah, but what if I look awful, Jen? Look at me. Jen: You'll look beautiful. And a few people might actually want to hear what you have to say. Marcie: Thanks. Jen: Look, I got to take off, but just promise me that you're going to quit soon. Marcie: I promise. I promise! Jen: I'm watching you, Marcie Walsh. Marcie: Yeah, I know. Ok. Marcie goes back to walking on the treadmill.
At the Love House, Jen stands in the doorway of the living room and listens as Riley plays his guitar and sings. Riley: (sings) In her eyes I see the summer sunset I see the rivers runnin'
wild I see my future beside my past I left behind I see the dead of winter I see
the glowin' grace of time i see the world before me everything I need in Jen's
eyes Jen: Hey. Riley: Hey, you just get here? Jen: I've been listening a while. I haven't heard that one before. Riley: It's new. Jen: Is it for me? (Riley nods) Thank you. I love it. Riley: It's not finished yet. Jen: What's the matter? Riley? Riley: Can I ask you something? Jen: What? Riley: The night you left Capricorn, you never told me where you went. Jen: I just went for a walk. Riley: A little late for that. Jen: I was upset. My stomach hurt. I just needed some fresh air. Are you made because I left while you were playing? Riley: Not really. But I did notice it was right after that thing on the news about Paul Cramer’s murder, the new evidence. Jen: Why are you so obsessed with this? Dorian's out of jail? Riley: Which means they will be questioning everyone again, including you. Jen: Well, I don't care. I don't have anything to hide. You think that I did it, don't you? You think that I killed Paul?
At the hospital, Paige continues to question Cristian. Paige: Well, according to the tests that you had when you were an inpatient, there's no medical reason for your headaches. Cristian: Natalie's overreacting. Paige: I'd still like to run a few tests. Cristian: No, no, there's no need. I'm fine. Paige: You know, headaches can be caused by other things -- stress, anxiety. Cristian: Who can avoid stress, right? Paige: Yeah, right. Hey, Cristian, you know what? Maybe you should talk to somebody about what you went through. Cristian: I don't need a shrink. Paige: You know, there's no shame in finding support. Cristian: I have my wife and my family. Paige: That might not be enough. Now, I’m not a therapist, but I do know that if you hang on to traumatic experiences, I mean, it can haunt you forever. Why don't you just think about it, all right? Dr. Janssen will be in in a minute to take out those stitches. Paige walks into the hallway and spots Michael. Paige: Hey, that was quick. How'd it go with the board? Michael: I think what you mean to ask me is, did I save the hospital from a massive media scandal? Paige: Oh, man, we are on your side. I wish you could believe that. Michael: You're on my side? Really? Everybody knows that Tico Santi was murdered. Everybody knows that the cops screwed up. But the hospital is shifting its attention to the patient's medical care. Hmm. Marcie walks up and approaches Michael and Paige. Paige: Michael, we've got to talk about this later because I've got patients to go see. Michael: Yeah, well, let me know when you're going to go on rounds, ok? I wouldn't dare go on my own. I might kill another patient and tarnish the hospital's spotless reputation. Marcie: Michael, what are you doing? He didn't mean any of that, Dr. Miller. Paige: No, it's ok, it's ok. I knew this was going to be a rough day for you, and you know what, yes, I will. I'll let you know when I’m ready for rounds. Michael: Don't you ever apologize for me. Marcie: You could've lost your job, Michael! Michael: That's my decision! Marcie: I was just trying to help you! Michael: Yeah, well, don't, ok? Do I try and help you? Do I tell you what to do, what to say to your agent, your -- your publisher, your editor? No, I don't! Because you don't need my help, either. Marcie: Is that true? You don't think that we need each other, Michael? Is that true? Michael: I don't want to fight. Marcie: I don't want to fight either, ok? Michael: Well, then let's just drop it. Marcie: Do you know I got up at 5:00 a.m. Today? Michael: Well, if you're tired, then go and take a nap. Marcie: Michael, I got up at 5:00 A.M. Today because I have four meetings and an appointment and I wanted to see you first. But now, you know, I think I’m actually sorry that I even came here. Michael: So, what, you want me to feel sorry, too? Marcie: Why are you being such a jerk? Michael: I don't know. I don't know, maybe that's just it. Maybe I'm just a jerk, ok? I'm not perfect like Al. Marcie: Why -- why are you -- you think I'm comparing you to Al? Michael frowns and glances away. Marcie: You haven't brought up Al in months. Why now, Michael? Michael: Well, when you start pointing out what's wrong with me, I think the comparison is pretty much implied. Marcie: Well, you're wrong, ok? And you know what? I wasn't pointing out what was wrong with you. What is with you lately? Michael: Oh, I think you said it before -- I’m a jerk! Marcie: Well, I guess that's it, then, isn't it? Marcie rushes away but then collapses on the floor. Michael rushes to her. Michael: Marcie! Marcie! Marcie, Marcie, honey? Sweetie?
December 16, 2004 Marcie is in bed in a hospital room. She is dressed in a hospital gown and Michael is standing next to her bed. Marcie: Michael, I’m fine! This is ridiculous! Michael: You are not fine. You passed out. Marcie: I fainted. It's not a big deal. Michael: Well, it could be. We'll know once we get the results of your blood work back. Marcie: Why are you overreacting? Michael: Because I love you, Marcie! And if something is wrong with you, well, I need to know! And -- because I love you.
Jen and Riley are in the front hall of the Love House hugging and kissing. Riley: You sure you're ready for this? Jen: Yes, I am. Promise me that you don't think I killed Paul. Riley: I'm sorry I even doubted you for a minute. It was just my -- it was just my dad was putting thoughts in my head -- Jen: Your dad? Oh, great, great. The D.A. thinks that I killed Paul. Riley: No, no, no, he's just digging around. That's what he does. He doesn't trust anyone. Everyone's a suspect, ok? But I'm not going to let him hurt you, I promise. I love you too much. Jen: I love you, too. Riley: Come on. Jen’s cell phone rings. Riley: No, no, no, no, let your voicemail pick it up, please, please. Jen looks at caller ID. Jen: Oh, it's Marcie. I saw her at the gym this morning. She wasn't doing so great. I'll get it. (answers the phone) Hey. Are you ok? Marcie: Yes, but I’m in the hospital. Jen: At the hospital? What happened? Marcie: I got dizzy and I fainted, but I’m fine. Michael's being really silly. He's making me take all these stupid tests, and he won't let me leave. Jen: Good. Marcie: No! No, no, Jen, it's not good because I'm fine. Could you come over here? You know, maybe you could try to help me convince Michael to let me go. Jen: I'll be right there. Jen breaks the connection. Riley: Marcie's in the hospital? Is she ok? Jen: Yeah, but I just want to make sure for myself. You want to come with me? Riley: Absolutely. Jen: I'm sorry. It looks like our plans kind of got ruined. Riley: We got time. Jen: Yeah? Riley: Yeah.
Later at the hospital, Jen and Riley are in Marcie’s room. Jen: Hey. Marcie: Oh, Hi. Riley: Hi, Marcie. Jen: How you doing? Marcie: I'm fine. Hi. Jen: Did the tests come back? Marcie: Stupid tests -- I'm fine. Michael is just completely overreacting. Jen: Well, maybe not. Michael comes into the room. Michael: Jen, Riley. Riley: Hey man. Jen: Hey. Is Marcie ok? Michael: Well, your test results came back normal -- aside from the fact that you are severely dehydrated. Jen: Yeah, probably because you're working out too hard and not eating well enough. Michael: What's she talking about? Marcie: You weren't supposed to say anything! Jen: Well, this is serious, Marcie. I'm worried about you. Michael: What does she mean, not eating right, working out too hard? Marcie: It's nothing, Michael, really. It's absolutely -- Michael: No, it's not nothing. This is because of that Hayes guy, right? Because he told you that you needed to lose weight and start exercising? Marcie: Well, that's not a bad thing. Michael: It is a bad thing if you're pushing yourself that you're so -- this is all because of that stupid book! Marcie: You think my book is stupid? Is that what you really think? Michael: That -- that is not what I meant. I love "The Killing Club." You know that I do. But pushing yourself to the point of passing out because your jerk agent thinks that you need to look perfect to sell books? That's stupid! Marcie: He never said that! Jen: We're going to take off. Marcie: No, Jen, I want you to stay, really. Jen: Listen to Michael. He's a doctor and he loves you. Riley: Hey, feel better, Marcie. Marcie: I will. Jen: Call me later, ok? Marcie: I will, I will. Jen and Riley leave. Michael: I do love you, Marcie. But you got to promise that you're going to stop all this nonsense; that you're going to stop pushing yourself so hard, and that you're going to start eating right! Marcie: No, I'm not going to do it. Michael: So you're going to keep this up, huh? Working out too hard, not eating right? Marcie: That is not what I’m doing, Michael. Michael: You're going to sacrifice your health for book sales? That's genius. Marcie: Michael, I worked really hard on "The Killing Club," and I’m going to do whatever I need to do in order to make this book a success! If you don't like -- Michael: Yeah, even if it kills you! Paige walks into the room. Paige: Hey, is everything ok in here? Michael: Everything is fine, Dr. Miller. Just having a little disagreement with my patient. Marcie: Oh, well, now I'm your patient? Paige: Your girlfriend is your patient? I don't think so. No way. I want you off this case right now. Michael: No. Paige: You know what? That's not a request. Marcie: Listen, I'm fine. Really, I'm fine. And anyway, Michael was about to release me. Paige: Michael, if you value your job, you will leave this room now. Michael frowns and hesitates but then walks to the door. He stops and looks at Paige. Michael: Take good care of her. We might not always see eye to eye, but she means the world to me.
At the Love House, Jen and Riley are in the foyer hugging and kissing. Riley: I want the first time we make love to be when we're completely focused on each other. Jen: So do I. Riley: I'll be upstairs in a few. Jen: Don't be too long. Jen goes upstairs. Riley waits until she is out of sight then looks in her purse. He finds an ID bracelet with the initials PC engraved on it. Riley: Are you kidding? "P.C." Paul Cramer.
