Episode 29 Relationship Algebra
December 21, 2004 Marcie is in her hospital room, talking on the phone. Marcie: Eric. Hi. Yeah, I -- I just forgot to thank you for the balloons. No, nothing's wrong. No. I guess maybe I was just hoping that I could get a little advice from my big brother. It's about Michael. I feel like I'm losing him, and I don't really know what to do about it. Meanwhile in the hallway, Paige approaches Michael. Paige: Hey, Michael? I just heard from the hospital board. Michael: Ok. Give it to me straight. Am I allowed to practice medicine or not?
At the Hallowed Grounds Coffee Shop, Jen walks up to Riley. Riley: Thought you were going to bed. Jen: I couldn't sleep. Where did you go? You were gone when I went downstairs. Riley: To take a walk. You looking for something? Jen: Oh, it's no big deal. Riley: I think it's a very big deal.
Marcie continues talking to Eric on the phone. Marcie: What do you mean? No, I'm not -- I’m not comparing him to Al. Outside in the hallway, Paige delivers some news to Michael Paige: Well, I wouldn't hang up your stethoscope just yet. The board found no evidence of negligence on your part the night Tico Santi was murdered. Michael: Yes! Of course they didn’t. Paige: I know it was very difficult for you to stand up in front of the board with this. But you know what, after your 90-day probation period, your record is going to be -- Michael: 90-day probation period? Paige: Yeah, standard procedure. Michael: For what? You just said that i was cleared of all wrongdoing, so what am i on probation for? Paige: Michael, it's -- Michael: A man's life-support system was pulled. I don't see why I should have to pay for that. Paige: You're not. The board just wants to keep an eye -- Michael: Just wants to cover their butts. Paige: You know what? This could've turned out a lot worse than it did. You should remember that. Marcie continues her conversation with Eric. Marcie: I don't even know who Michael is anymore. He's -- he's always angry. I know. I know, I know I should be talking to him about this. Michael walks into Marcie room and she spots him. Marcie: Listen, I got to go, ok? I love you, and tell James I said hi. Ok, bye. Hey. Michael: Talking to your brother on the phone? Marcie: Yeah. Dr. Miller is almost ready to discharge me, so I thought maybe we could go somewhere and we could talk about some things. Michael: I can’t. Marcie: Why? Did you hear from the board? Michael: The good news is that I’m still allowed to practice medicine. The bad news is I'm on a leash, a very short leash.
Riley shows Jen and ID bracelet he found. Riley: This has the initials P. C. on it. This is Paul Cramer’s, isn't it? Be serious! My dad's asking me all these questions about you and Paul, and I find this in your purse. Jen: I told you a million times that I didn't kill Paul. You said you believed me. Riley: And I still do. Jen: Then why are you accusing me? Riley: I'm not accusing you, but I have to know how you got this. Now, be straight with me. Jen: Ok. That night that I got Paul drunk, when I stole the videotape of Rex and my mom, I guess I must've accidentally taken it from the motel room. Riley: And you've been carrying it around for months. Why? Jen: I was scared, Riley. I didn't know what to do with it. And then once Paul turned up dead, everyone would think that -- that I killed him if they knew that I had that. I guess I was right.
At the hospital, Michael explains the hospital’s decision to Marcie. Michael: I'm on a 90-day probation, which means no unscheduled breaks. Marcie: Well, that isn't fair, is it? Michael: Well, it is what it is. I got to be on my best behavior, no mistakes. Marcie: You know what? You'll get through it. I believe in you. Paige walks into Marcie’s room carrying a batch of papers. Paige: Marcie, I have -- I have your discharge papers here. I just need a few John Hancock’s, a final exam, and then you're out of here. Marcie: Sounds good. Paige: Great. Michael: I got to go check on a patient. I'll come back and check on you before you take off, ok? Marcie: Promise? Michael walks out into the hallway and runs into Jen, who is obviously upset. Michael: Hey, Jen. Jen: Is Marcie still here? Michael: Yeah, yeah. She's just finishing up with the doctor. Are you ok? You don't look so good. Jen: I just -- I feel like I don't have anybody to talk to. I don't know where else to go. Michael hugs Jen then she seems to get herself under control. Jen: I'm sorry. Michael: You don't have anything to be sorry about. What's going on? Jen: Nothing. Michael: Listen, I am your doctor. You can talk to your doctor, can't you? Jen: It's just -- Michael: I'm also your friend. Jen: Do you know what it's like to have people not trust you, to assume the worst about you? I mean, you start to second-guess yourself. You start to think "maybe they're right, maybe there's a reason i can't be trusted." Michael: I know exactly what that feels like. You want to walk me over to x-ray? I'll spring for a cup of vending machine coffee. Come on. You've never had coffee till you've had coffee at the x-ray. They walk off together.
Later, Riley walks into Marcie’s hospital room. She is dressed and obviously waiting to leave. Riley: Excuse me -- Marcie? Marcie: Hey, Riley. Riley: Hey, you got a second? Marcie: Yeah, sure. I'm just waiting for my ride. What's up? Riley: Jen, Paul Cramer, that whole mess -- she hasn't said anything to you, has she? Marcie: About what? Wait, wait, you don't -- you don't think that Jen had anything to do with Paul’s death, do you? Riley: No, Marcie, I don't think she killed Paul Cramer. But something's freaking her out, and every time I try to bring it up, she either changes the subject or takes off. Marcie: Can you blame her, though, I mean, especially after what he did to her mom? Riley: Well, listen, when you get out of here, will you keep an eye on her for me? Marcie: Yeah, of course, sure. Riley: Good. She needs somebody in her corner and I'm just not sure I'm that person right now. Marcie: You know, Jen loves you. Riley: Well, I love her, and I want to help her with whatever is eating her up inside, but I can't if she won't let me. Meanwhile, in the hallway Michael and Jen walk up to Marcie’s door. Michael: Who knows? Maybe next time I'll splurge and get us some green cafeteria Jello. You're not a very talkative date -- every man's dream, I guess. Jen: Yeah, I guess I just needed somebody to sit with me who wasn't -- Michael: Involved in the situation. Jen: Exactly. Michael: Yeah. I know what you mean. You know, Marcie and I -- we've been totally out of synch lately, you know? We used to be able to just sit in a room together and not say a word, and that was ok. We were close, we knew it. We just felt it. Jen: That is exactly the feeling I miss. Michael: You'll get that feeling back. Jen: So will you. They hug again just as Hayes walks up. Jen: Thanks. Michael: Any time. Jen walks away and Hayes comes over to Michael. Hayes: Michael. Michael: Hayes. Hayes: Hey, does Marcie know you've got a hot new girlfriend? Michael glares at him. Hayes walks into Marcie’s room. Hayes: Hey. Marcie: Oh, hi. Hayes: How's my newest writer? Marcie: Oh, I'm fine. I'm feeling kind of silly for being hospitalized for working out too much, but -- Michael: No, passing out and getting too dehydrated -- that's what you were admitted for. Marcie: Michael -- Hayes: I'm just glad you're doing better. We got a big press junket after the New Year's. Marcie: I'm going to be ready for it. Hayes: I hope so. Hayes’s cell phone rings. He looks at the display screen. Hayes: God, sorry. Oh -- my boss from the agency. I've got to take this. Excuse me. Marcie: Sure. Hayes walks into the hallway and the phone rings again. Hayes: Yeah? No, Marcie’s being released from the hospital tonight. No, no, no, no, no, I've got it. I'm on top of it. We've got plenty of time to get her in shape before she meets the public. In Marcie’s hospital room, Michael has a hard time hiding his feelings about Hayes. Michael: I didn't realize that Hayes was picking you up today. Marcie: Is that a problem, Michael? Michael: I just didn't know, that's all. Marcie –(he’s cut off by Marcie, who says his name at the same time.) Marcie: Michael – They look at each other. Marcie: You go first. Go first, ok? Michael: Ok. This Hayes guy -- Marcie: Yeah? Michael: I'm sure that he's a wonderful agent, but I don't think that you should be letting him run your life. Marcie: He just knows what it takes to sell books, Michael! That is it, ok? Michael: The success of your book isn't going to ride on how good or bad you look. Marcie: Oh, so you're saying I look bad? Michael: No, that's not -- that's not what I'm saying. What I’m saying is you shouldn't change who you are. Marcie: Change doesn't always have to be a bad thing, Michael. Michael: What the hell is that supposed to mean? Marcie: Nothing! It's nothing, ok? Michael, forget about it! I was just talking! Forget I even said anything. Michael: Ok. I don't know what it is I have to do to convince you that I am on your side. I say the words, I feel the feelings, but nothing seems to get through to you. Al never had a problem getting through to you, did he? He knew exactly what you needed, exactly what you wanted. Well, I am really sorry, Marcie, but I'm not Al. And I never will be.
At the coffee shop, Daniel spots Riley. Daniel: Hey, Riley. I'm glad I found you here. Riley: Hey, dad. What's up? Daniel: Listen, I've been thinking about that conversation that we had this morning. Riley: Oh, yeah? I haven't thought that much about it. Daniel: Look, son, I’m not accusing Jen of being a murderer. But you said yourself she's been acting strange since Halloween, and -- look, if you know anything, anything at all about the night Paul Cramer was murdered, you have to tell me. Riley: Dad, I don't know anything. Daniel: And how come I get the feeling you're lying, son? Riley: I'm sorry, dad. I don't know anything more about Paul Cramer’s murder than you do. Jen walks up to Daniel and Riley. Daniel: Hey, Jen. Jen: Hi, Mr. Colson. Daniel: Ok, look, I'll let you guys talk. I'm going to grab a coffee. Riley: All right. Jen: Riley. Riley: Don't worry. I didn't tell him anything. Jen: Look, I'm sorry I walked out on you before. Riley: Well, you know, it's becoming a bad habit. I've tried everything. I've tried being there for you. I've tried believing you. Nothing works. The ball is in your court now.
At the hospital, Michael has second thoughts about throwing Al in Marcie’s face. Michael: I'm sorry. Marcie: It's ok. Michael: No, it's not. It's a cheap shot. I shouldn't have said that about Al. Marcie: Look, for whatever reason, he keeps coming up, ok? Just can we not talk about it here? Michael: You're right. Marcie: Ok. When are you going to be off later? Michael: Not till late. Marcie: Well, I'll wait up for you. Michael: It's an all-nighter, Marcie. Listen, you need to go home, you need to get your rest, I need to do rounds. Tomorrow, Christmas Eve -- talk? Marcie: Mm-hmm, ok. Hayes sticks his head into the room. Hayes: Marcie? Marcie: Hi. Yeah, I'm coming, I'm ready. I'm ready to go. Marcie leaves and Michael looks around the room. In frustration, he punctures one of the balloons in the bouquet next to Marcie’s bed.
