Episode 38

"These Arms of Mine..."
February 14, 15 & 16, 2005

Monday, February 14, 2005

At the hospital, Michael is sitting next to Marcie’s bed.  She is still unconscious.

Michael: You have so much to look forward to, sweetie. "The Killing Club" is coming out this week. You got to be there to see it through. You can do it, Marcie. You can have anything and everything that you ever wanted.

Michael: Valentine's Day. One year ago tonight, I kissed you for the first time, and you changed my life. I know it wasn't easy for you. You missed al. You were afraid to open up to me. But you fought through it. You fought for me, you fought for us. Well, sweetie, now it's time to fight for you and to fight to get well, to fight to have everything that you ever dreamed of.

Marcie has a fantasy where she is sitting on a swing against a black background. She looks sad and leans against the rope of the swing and sings Otis Redding’s These Arms of Mine.

Marcie: (sings) These arms of mine they are lonely lonely and feeling blue these arms of mine they are yearning yearning from wanting you/ And if you would let them let them hold you oh, how grateful I would be oh, how grateful I would be these arms of mine they are burning burning from wanting you

Michael (or is it Al? Not sure) appears behind Marcie and presents her with a bouquet of flowers.  She smiles. He pushes her on the swing.  The scene shifts to a scene where they are nude and wrapped in each other’s arms in a hot embrace. (2 seconds but smoking)

Back in the real world, Michael is sitting by Marcie’s bed.

Michael: Marcie, I still love you. Even if we can't be together, I will always love you.

Tuesday, February 15, 2005

In Marcie hospital room, Michael is looking out of the window.  Marcie opens her eyes.

Marcie: Michael?

Michael turns and rushes over to her.

Michael: Marcie.

Marcie: Hi.

Michael: Hi. Are you -- are you ok? How are you feeling?

Marcie: Better than I thought I’d be. How long was I out?

Michael: A while. Long enough to almost miss our anniversary.

Marcie: It would've been one year. But I guess it's not really an anniversary, is it? I mean, not if we're not together.

Later, Paige is checking out Marcie.

Marcie: Thank you, doctor, for everything you've done for me.

Paige: Are you kidding me? It's patients like you that make me look good.

Marcie: If it wasn't for Michael, I wouldn't even be here. I know that he wasn't supposed to treat me, but he saved my life. You know, if he wasn't at this accident -- you think maybe you could put in a word for him with the board?

Paige: You know, Marcie, I'm not even sure that that would matter anymore.

Marcie: What do you mean? Dr. Miller, if something else is going on with Michael, you have to tell me what it is.

Paige: Apparently, Michael got into an argument with your agent.

Marcie: Ok.

Paige: He assaulted him.

Out in the hallway, Haye is talking to an associate.  You can see the wheels turning in his head.

Hayes: Marcie is in bad shape. You know, there's no way she's going to make the book party tomorrow. But this could be good news.

Publicist: How do you figure?

Hayes: Well, we'll play it up. You know, a first-time novelist mowed down by a hit-and-run driver, hovering between life and death. This is a story in and of itself. You know, we'll get a picture of her on life-support and plaster it all over the ads. You know, people are going to eat this up.

Publicist: What if she's actually well enough by tomorrow?

Hayes: Well, we don't want her to get well too soon, do we? You know, the longer she stays in there, the better it is for her.

Publicist: Yeah, and the better for our book sales.

Hayes: Come on.

Marcie: Michael wouldn't just assault somebody, you know? I mean, Hayes probably provoked him somehow. He probably -- he can get really pushy sometimes.

Back in her hospital room, Marcie continues to talk to Paige.

Paige: I don't know, Marcie. I don't know all of the details. What I do know is that I’m working on getting you better, ok?

Marcie: Ok.

Paige: And the sooner we get you out of bed and walking around on your feet, the faster your recovery.

Marcie: Ok.

Michael: Fast enough to make her book party tomorrow?

Paige: There's nothing more that I would like than to release Marcie in time for her book party, but I just don't see --

Marcie: Why? I thought you said I was getting better.

Michael: Yeah, her numbers look really good. I mean, she can handle it.

Paige: You know what -- I'm going to talk to your dad about it first, all right?

Marcie: Ok.

Paige: All right. Excuse me.

Michael: See you.

Marcie: Bye.

Paige leaves.

Marcie: You don't really think that I can make it to this party, do you?

Michael: You don't really want to miss the most important day of your life, do you?

Marcie: No, but you're usually so overprotective. I don't understand.

Michael: Yeah, well, I'm not being overprotective now, so let's get you up and out of here.

Marcie: No. Not until you tell me what's going on.

In the hallway, Paige talks to Charlie Walsh and Ron.

Paige: Marcie is definitely out of the woods.

Mr. Walsh: Thank you, doctor, for everything you did for my little girl.

Ron: So when do you think she can get out of here?

Paige: Well, I'm thinking about releasing her tomorrow morning.

Mr. Walsh: Isn't that a little soon?

Ron: Well, come on, pop, that means she can make her book party, and you know what a big deal it is to her, right?

Mr. Walsh: I guess, if the doctor thinks it's ok.

Paige: Yeah, you know what -- I'm going to let you tell her yourself, all right?

Paige walks away.

Ron: Marcie's going to be stoked. Come on.

Hayes slithers over to Charlie Walsh and Ron.

Hayes: Excuse me. I'm sorry. I couldn't help overhearing what the doctor was saying about letting Marcie out tomorrow. Mr. Walsh, you're not honestly considering letting her do that, are you?

In Marcie’s hospital room, Michael continues to try to convince Marcie she should try to attend the book party.

Michael: Yep, you are definitely on the mend, and by tomorrow, you'll be ready to party.

Marcie: Michael, stop avoiding the subject.

Michael: I'm not.

Marcie: Yes, you are. Why is it so important to you that I go to this party?

Michael: Because it's important to you.

Marcie: More important than my health?

Michael: Marcie, do you really think that I would send you packing before you were ready?

Marcie: No, but usually you would make me stay here a lot longer than I needed to, and you know I’m right. And you know what, you might as well just tell me what it is before I -- I'm not going to stop bugging you.

Michael: Ok, all right.

Marcie: So just tell me what it is, ok?

Michael: Ok. Ok. I overheard Hayes and your publicist, what's-his-name, talking.

Marcie: Yeah?

Michael: They were saying that they don't want you to get out of the hospital. They want you to miss your party.

Marcie: Why?

Michael: So they can cash in on your accident.

Marcie: What?

Hayes: You think I want Marcie to miss her publishing party? I'm her agent, for god's sakes. There's nothing I want or need more than for her to be there -- no, except for her recovery. That's my biggest concern right now.

Mr. Walsh: Why would her doctor say she's ok if she isn't?

Hayes: Michael has been pressing them. I overheard him harassing her doctor about it.

Ron: No, Dr. Miller wouldn't do it if she didn't think Marcie was ready.

Hayes: You're probably right, Ron. You know, but, god, if she were my sister or my daughter, I just -- I wouldn't want to take any chances.

Paige walks up to them.

Paige: Hey. Did you give Marcie the good news?

Mr. Walsh: I've changed my mind. I don't want Marcie leaving the hospital yet

In Marcie’s hospital room, Charlie Walsh explains his decision to Marcie.

Mr. Walsh: That book party's not as important as your health.

Marcie: I know, dad.

Ron: And we'll let Jerry and Eric know, ok?

Marcie: Ok.

Mr. Walsh: Bye-bye, sweetie.

Marcie: Bye, daddy. Bye.

Ron and Charlie Walsh leave.  Michael glances at Marcie.

Michael: I can always spring you.

Marcie: You know, I don't want to worry my dad any more than he already is. He's been through enough.

Michael: Yeah. Hayes probably already got to him.

Marcie: Maybe he's right, Michael. You know, maybe my book will sell more with the whole sympathy angle, sell better.

Michael: Your book is going to sell because it's great. You don't need some stupid publicity stunt. So come on, let's get you up and out of here.

Marcie: Oh, I don't want to get you into any more trouble.

Michael: Screw that! Let's go to this party and prove Hayes wrong.

Wednesday, February 16, 2005

The book party has been set up at The Palace Restaurant.  There are posters of Marcie and stacks of books on a table.  Guest mill around including Jen, Riley, Haye, the Publicist, varied and assorted real life folks from Hyperion.

Riley: This is great.

Jen: Wow. Only a year ago Marcie was breaking all the pots in the diner. Now look at her.

Hayes looks around and focuses on the poster of Marcie. .

Hayes: Oh, you know, let's -- let's kill the headshot. I want our guests to be picturing Marcie lying in her hospital bed on the brink of death.

Publicist: Who could resist that story?

Hayes: Hey, we could be looking at record sales for a first-timer.

Jen and Riley overhear his statement.

Jen: Sounds like Hayes wishes Marcie didn't make it past the accident. He'd sell more books.

At the hospital, Michael helps Marcie into a wheelchair.

Marcie stumbles and Michael catches her.

Marcie: Ow.

Michael: Oh, oh, oh, sweetie! I got you. I got you.

Marcie: Thank you, Michael.

Michael: You ok?

Marcie: Yeah, better now.

At the book party, Eric and Ron approaches Jen and Riley.

Eric: Thanks for coming, guys.

Jen: Are you kidding? Nothing could keep us away.

Ron: Look, you two have been great through all of this. Thank you.

Riley: Well, we're just glad Marcie’s going to be all right.

Jen: Not if her agent had his way.

Ron: Well, I'm not crazy about Hayes, either, but maybe we should just ignore him for today?

Eric: Yeah, we can't let anything ruin this for Marcie.

Ron: Right.

Riley: May be too late for that.

They glance over at Hayes and the Publicist.

Publicist: It's almost time to get started.

Hayes: Yeah. I'm going to say a few words on Marcie’s behalf.

Publicist: You don't think the boyfriend will object?

Hayes: Yeah, Michael McBain won't be anywhere near the palace today.

Back at the hospital, Marcie begins to rethink her decision to attend the book party.

Marcie: Oh, Michael, how am I supposed to go to that party? I can't even stand on my own two feet.

Michael: Well, you don't have to. You got a ride.

Marcie: Maybe my dad was right, Michael. Maybe I should just stay here.

Michael: Marcie, don't you think that if i thought that you weren't strong enough, i'd be the first person to say so?

Marcie: Yes.

Michael: Now, listen, if you feel weak, you lean on me, ok? If you decide that you just want to call the whole thing off, well, that's ok, too. This is your day. You get to make all the decisions, all right?

Marcie: Ok.

Michael: Ok.

Marcie: Oh.

Michael: Huh? Makeup bag. Ok.

Marcie: You ready?

Michael: Yeah. Are you? Are you ready? Are you ready to go to your first big book party?

Marcie: I'm ready.

Michael: Ok.

Out in the hallway, a police officer approaches Paige.

Man: Excuse me? Sergeant Stan Golder, Llanview police. I'm looking for a Dr. Michael McBain?

Michael wheels Marcie out into the hallway.

Paige: As a matter of fact, here he is now.

Stan: Dr. Michael McBain?

Michael: Yes. How can I help you?

Stan: I have a few questions for you.

Stan: Do you know a Hayes Barber?

Marcie: He's my agent.

Michael: Yeah. What about him?

Stan: He wants to press assault charges against you.

Marcie: He what?

Stan: I need to hear your side of the story.

Paige: If -- if you'll excuse me, please.

Stan: Oh, thanks, doctor.

Paige walks away.

Michael: Listen, officer, I’d be happy to answer any of your questions. Is there any way that it could wait a little while?

Stan: I'm afraid it can't.

Michael: Just a few hours. I mean, listen, I'm not a flight risk. I mean, my brother is lieutenant John McBain, so, I mean, he'd vouch --

Stan: Sorry. You're going to have to come with me.

Marcie: But, listen, Sergeant, Michael and I were just on our way to the palace restaurant for my book publishing party. Remember I told you that? It's "The Killing Club"? Well, Hayes is there. Why don't you just follow us?

Stan: I don't know, Marcie.

Marcie: Oh, come on. I -- you know, we can straighten everything out. I know this is a misunderstanding, that's all. Please?

At the book party, Rex saunters over to Jen and Riley.

Rex: How's it going?

Jen: What are you doing here?

Rex: Came to buy Marcie’s book.

Riley: Oh, come on, Rex. You can't keep your mouth shut long enough to read a book.

Rex: It could happen. Ok, probably not, but it's still a sale for Marcie.

Jen: That's true.

Riley: Let's get a drink.

Rex: Oh -- by the way, I was at the police station last night. I talked to the police Commissioner and the A.D.A. About Paul Cramer.

Jen: Why?

Rex: I was trying to get them off your case -- and Lindsay’s.

Jen: What happened?

Rex: Well, they listened, but it's hard to tell if the cops are buying or not.

Riley: Well, I'm guessing not, being that your credibility is zero.

Rex: Well, at least I tried.

Riley: Yeah, but I bet you didn't see anything in it for you, did you?

Rex: Nope. Just a nice, warm feeling for doing something for somebody else. You should try it sometime, rock star.

Jen: Stop it, both of you.

In the meanwhile, Hayes walks to the front of the room.

Hayes: Ladies and gentlemen, can I have your attention, please? Thank you all and welcome. I have the great honor and privilege of introducing you today to this year's most eagerly anticipated mystery novel, "The Killing Club." I'm Hayes barber and I represent the fabulously talented first-time novelist miss Marcie Walsh. Unfortunately -- unfortunately, Marcie can't be with us today. She was involved in a terrible accident, struck down by a hit-and-run driver. She's still in the hospital struggling to recover her strength. But many of her family members are with us and they wanted me to thank you profusely for being here. Your generous and strong support through prepaid orders will certainly help to lift Marcie’s spirits during these difficult times.

Michael wheels Marcie into the room.

Marcie: Actually, I'm feeling a lot better.

A buzz circles the room.

Marcie: And since I'm here, well, I thought I'd thank you all myself.

Michael pushes Marcie further into the room.  Eric and Charlie Walsh rush to her.

Eric: How do you feel?

Marcie: Pretty good at the moment.

Mr. Walsh: Did the doc give you your walking papers?

Marcie: Yes, dad, she did. Besides, Michael’s here, ok? I couldn't miss this for the world.

Hayes: Ladies and gentlemen, I -- I don't know if this is a miracle of modern medicine or sheer will that enabled her to be here, but, please, give a warm welcome to the author of "The Killing Club," Marcie Walsh.

Marcie glares at Hayes.

Michael: Ignore him, Marcie. This is your moment, ok?

Marcie: Thanks for getting me here.

Michael: Hey, can you make it up there on your own?

Marcie: I don't think so, Michael. I don't think I can.

Michael: I got you, babe.

Marcie: Ok.

Michael rolls her to the front of the room.

Marcie: Hi.

Everyone laughs.

Marcie: First of all, I -- well, I want to thank each and every one of you for being here. Well, this has been a dream for me, ever since I can remember, I -- I think ever since I picked up my first book and read it. It's -- to see it happening is -- well, anyway, there are -- well, you know, there are a couple of people that I owe a special thank-you to, the first of which is shelly. She helped me form the real-life killing club in high school all those years ago. And I would also like to thank Gretchen Young and Bob Miller from Hyperion, and to Chip Kidd who designed a beautiful cover. And to Professor Malone, who -- he couldn't be here today (hee), but, well, he saw something in that mess of a draft that I sent him --

There is more laughter.

Marcie: Years ago. And, last, but not least, there's one other person who I’d like to thank most of all, who I really -- I couldn't have done any of this without his encouragement and his love -- Dr. Michael McBain.

Everyone applauds.

Bob Miller, Chip Kidd and Gretchen Young from Hyperion approach Marcie for their fifteen minutes and on camera face time.

Bob: Marcie, Mike Malone was so upset that he couldn't be here today. (Oh, gag me with a spoon already)  But he wanted you to know that even though you never believed it, he always knew this day would come.

Marcie: Well, that's just because he taught me everything I know. And, Chip, I love this cover. It's so beautiful. I was so excited to see my name on the cover.

Chip: Oh, well, thank you.

Gretchen: Congratulations.

Marcie: Thank you.

Bob: We're proud to have you in the Hyperion family.

Marcie: Thanks.

Rex approaches Marcie.

Rex: Can I have an autograph?

Gretchen: We'll let you get back to business.

The Hyperion Family walks away. Marcie arches her eyebrow and stares at Rex.

Marcie: Ahem.

Rex: Marcie!

Marcie: Rex. You don't really want an autograph, do you? You know -- thank you -- Jen told me that you came by the hospital after I had the accident. She also said that you --

Rex: Yeah, I, uh -- I happened to be in the neighborhood.

Marcie: Thanks.

Marcie signs the book and hands it to Rex.

Rex: Well, it'll be worth something when you're dead.

In the meanwhile, Hayes has buttonholed Stan, the police officer.

Hayes: Maybe you can explain to me why Michael McBain isn't in jail? I thought I made it clear I wanted to press charges.

Stan: Well, I have to get his version of events before I make the arrest.

Hayes: Why didn't you take him down to the station?

Rex overhears what’s going on and walks up to them.

Rex: Excuse me. There a problem here?

Hayes: You know, Michael McBain assaulted me at the emergency room at the hospital. What more do you need to know?

Marcie rolls over.

Marcie: Well, Sergeant, you know, the party -- it's almost over. If you could just wait a little bit longer?

Rex: Are you talking about the night of Marcie’s accident?

Stan: What do you know about this?

Rex: Well, I was at the hospital that night with dr. McBain, and I never saw him assault anyone.

Hayes’ head almost explodes.

Hayes: You're -- you're a liar.

Marcie: You know, Sergeant, this -- this is exactly what I was trying to tell you when we were at the hospital, ok? Hayes has just been looking to make trouble for Michael this entire time.

Hayes: Oh, what do you know? You weren't even conscious!

Marcie: Yeah, well, I'm conscious now!

Stan: (closes his notebook) You know, the LPD doesn't have time to resolve minor personal disputes. Good luck with the book, Marcie.

Marcie: Thanks.

Michael: Thanks a lot, officer.

Stan walks away.  Ron and Michael move next to Marcie.

Hayes: So this is how it's going to be, huh? After I worked my butt off to help you succeed?

Marcie: You know what? I don't need your kind of success. You're fired.

Hayes: You can't fire me.

Michael: I think she just did.

Ron: I think it'd be best if you left now.

Hayes: You know, stupid move. Your career is never going to recover.

Marcie: I'm not worried.

Hayes leaves in a huff.  Michael looks at Rex.

Michael: Hey -- thanks for covering for me.

Rex: Yeah, no sweat. All I did was tell the truth. Thanks for the book.

Michael: Yeah, thanks.

Rex saunters off.  Jen and Riley walk up to Marcie.

Marcie: Well, hey, guys?

Jen: Hey.

Marcie: Thanks for coming.

Jen: No problem. We've got to plan a party for when you hit the bestseller list.

Marcie: Oh, no, I'm not going to hope for that.

Riley: Well, you didn't think your book would get published, either.

Marcie: No, but I don't want to jinx it, either.

Jen: Well, Riley and I will keep our fingers crossed. We'll do that.

Marcie: Thanks.

Jen: Call me, ok?

Marcie: I will.

Michael: See you, guys.

Marcie: Talk to you later

Jen and Riley leave. Michael bends down and looks at Marcie.

Michael: How you feeling?

Marcie: Oh, a little tired, but never better, really.

Michael: Well, I'm really glad you're feeling good.

Marcie: Thanks for making sure I didn't miss the best day of my life.

Michael kisses her.
