Episode 40

"What Do You Want?"
February 23 & 25, 2005

Wednesday, February 23, 2005

At the police station, John is in the main room putting papers into a box.  Michael strolls in.

Michael: Now, there's a man who could use a beer.

John: A beer would go down real easy right now, but I’m going to have to take a rain check.

Michael: Oh, I'm sorry, chief. This is a onetime offer. Going once, going twice --

John: Gone. I got all this paperwork to file, Mike.

John walks into his office and Michael follows.

Michael: What, you're not hanging out with Evangeline tonight?

John: What's it to you?

Michael: Oh, just curious. I'm just wondering how long it's going to take you to screw this one up.

John raises his eyebrow and stares at Michael.

At the Love House, Riley, Jen and Marcie are packing boxes.

Riley: All packed?

Jen: Are you kidding? I've got, like, five more cartons of my stuff to pack.

Riley: I'll go get some more.

Marcie: Look, I realize that you guys want to move into your new apartment immediately, but does it have to be done in one day?

Jen: Yes. But you're recovering, so you just sit down. Just sit, relax. We'll do the rest of the work. Sit.

Marcie: Yes, mother, I'm sitting.

Marcie who still has a bandage on her head and her arm in a sling, sits on the couch.

Riley: I'm going to go get the cartons.

Jen: When you get back, we're going to look through some catalogs for some furniture, dishes, towels, stuff like that.

Riley: Whoa, whoa, whoa. We have no money to pay for any of that.

Marcie: Oh, come on, Riley. Jen's mom's probably biting at the bit to help you out.

Jen: No, no, my mother is not going to support me. Riley and I are doing this on our own.

Marcie: Fine.

Jen snuggles close to Riley.

Jen: You're right. I don't need all that stuff right now. All I need is you and more cartons.

Riley: At your service, ma'am.

Riley leaves. Jen sits on the couch with Marcie.

Marcie: I'm really happy for you, Jen.

Jen: How can I be so lucky, to be starting a new life with such a great guy like riley, you know, after all the mistakes i made and all the bad choices? Please, just don't let me screw this up, ok?

Marcie: Don't even think like that. Besides, come on. You and Riley love each other so much that it has to work out.

Jen: Hmm. Wise observation.

Marcie: What? Why are you looking at me for like that?

What?

Jen: Just that I could say the same thing about you and Michael.

Marcie: No, no, it is not the same thing.

Jen: It is exactly the same thing, and that's why I don't get it. Why are you two being so stubborn?

Meanwhile back in the police station, John reacts to Michael’s comment about Evangeline.

John: You pissed at me for something?

Michael: No.

John: Then why would you go and say something like that? Why would you say I'm going to screw things up with Evangeline?

Michael: Well, I don't know. It's just guys in our family have a tendency to do things like that.

John: What guys are you talking about?

Michael: Cheap shot, huh?

John: Yeah. And you didn't answer my question. What's going on, Mikey?

John and Michael sit on the edge of the desk across from each other. John fiddles with a small orange and while football.

Michael: I don't know. I guess I'm just having a hard time figuring out the whole man-woman relationship thing.

John: Yeah. You're not the only one. Put it this way -- there's a guy and he's walking along the beach. He finds a bottle, gives it a rub. Of course a genie pops out, right --

Michael: Mm-hmm.

John: Grants him one wish. Thinks about it, realizes he's afraid of flying, and he always wanted to see Hawaii. Big dream, Hawaii, right? But he couldn't fly. So he goes, "Hey, genie, here's what you do for me. You build me a bridge from the mainland to Hawaii, I can drive my car over, I get to see Hawaii." Genie goes, "Are you kidding me? That's way out of my realm of capabilities, all right? It's impossible. Ask for something else." The guy thinks about it for a minute and he goes, "Relationships. That's it, relationships. I don't understand them. I don't understand women. Explain women to me." Genie pauses for a second and then goes, "That bridge -- you want it to be two lanes or four?"

Michael: Yeah, exactly. I don't know how any couple makes it, you know? It's like, what are the odds?

John: I don't know, Mikey. They're not good, you know? It's like lottery-type numbers. Breaking up, it's always hard to do.

Michael: You know, I was going to ask her to marry me.

John: So why didn't you?

Michael: I don't know. It's hard to remember right now, I mean, my problems at the hospital, her book, my work.

John: Oh, Mikey, everybody works.

Michael: So what's that supposed to mean?

John: Well, it's just -- and I'm the last guy you should be asking about this, but work, it shouldn't be a roadblock to what you want.

Michael: Oh, it sure as hell is for me and Marcie. Although, maybe -- maybe we kind of make it a problem.

John: Because?

Michael: Because it's easier than getting close.

Later at the Love House, Jen and Marcie are standing in the living room.

Jen: This is an even bigger mystery than "The Killing Club" -- why you and Michael aren't together. It just doesn't make any sense.

Marcie: Yes, it does, Jen. It makes sense to me, ok? Michael and I, we're just -- we don't want the same thing.

Jen: Like what? Let's be specific.

Marcie: Like Michael wants a more traditional kind of a woman. He wants to make sure that, you know, someone's going to be there for him all the time. He's a doctor. He wants to be able to walk through the door and find someone who's more grounded, who's going to be there for him, and I understand it. It's fine.

Jen: Did Michael say that this is what he wants?

Marcie: Not in so many of those words.

Jen: Well, did he use any of those words?

Marcie: No.

Jen: So you just think that that's what Michael wants?

Marcie: You know, I don't want to talk about this anymore.

Jen: Why, why, because I'm making sense, or are you afraid we're going to talk about something that'll make you a little uncomfortable?

Marcie: What do you mean?

Jen: I'm talking about you. You've been talking all about what you think Michael wants, but what about you?

In John’s office, Michael and John toss the football back and forth and continue their talk about relationships.

John: Well, you got me there, Mike. Working overtime seems to be a common trait with the McBain boys.

Michael: Yeah. Well, it's not just work, though, you know? I think that Marcie wants somebody who's more -- I don't know -- worldly?

John: Wordy -- what's that?

Michael: No, John. Worldly.

John: Worldly?

Michael: Worldly.

John: What the hell's that?

Michael: You know, like somebody who knows books or fine food or like -- I don't know -- art maybe.

John: Maybe she wants a guy wearing a skirt. Now, we were talking about a guy here, right, Mike?

Michael: I'm serious here, John. Listen, man, I know how to fix broken bones, but I couldn't tell you what the new movie that just out is or who's on the bestsellers list -- none of that.

John: Well, that's so much more important than being a doctor.

Michael: You know what I mean, John. I mean, Marcie’s entering an entirely new world here, you know? You know, she needs somebody who can support her in ways that I obviously can’t. What?

John: Well, you should hear yourself talking. "Marcie wants this, Marcie wants this." How do you know all these things? Did she give you a list or something?

Michael: No.

John: Ok. Let me ask you a question. What is it you want, Mike?

At Rodi’s, Rex strolls into the restaurant with Daniel hot on his tail.

Daniel: Rex! I thought I saw your car outside.

Rex: Yeah, hey, look, I'm busy. I'm meeting someone here.

Daniel: Yeah, well, they can wait. We need to talk -- outside.

Rex and Daniel step outside by the door.

Rex: Could we make this quick?

Daniel: We wouldn't be here at all if you'd return my phone calls.

Rex: Well, I don't pick up messages anymore. New Year's resolution.

Daniel: You walked yourself into a police station the other night to help us find Paul Cramer’s murderer.

Rex: I know. I was there.

Daniel: And you got all antsy when Commissioner Buchanan started questioning you about Lindsay Rappaport.

Rex: Well, I don't like talking about friends behind their backs.

Daniel: Why? Because you think they're guilty of murder?

Rex: I don't think that. Why the hell would I tell you anything I didn't already tell Bo Buchanan?

Daniel: Because even though Commissioner Buchanan says he'll drop the evidence-tampering charges against you, I'm the only person who can actually do that. And I'll only do that if you keep good on your promise to help us find Paul’s killer.

Rex: Right, because having a killer on the loose could put a damper on your political ambitions. Am I wrong?

Daniel: Finding Paul’s killer will be beneficial to everyone.

Rex: All for the good of the community. I get it.

Daniel: Ok. Now that you're through being a wiseass, why don't you tell me who gave you that $10,000 to hide that gun in Dorian Lord's office?

Rex: (yells) I don't know!

Daniel grabs Rex and they tussle.

Daniel: You try again!

Rex: You know what? I'm out of here!

Daniel: Tell me something, Rex. Is she really worth going to prison for, giving up the best years of your life?

Rex: She's worth everything to me.

Daniel: That's interesting. I was talking about Lindsay Rappaport, but obviously you meant Jen. You think Jen murdered Paul Cramer.

Rex: Broken record, but I'll say it again.

Daniel: Oh, no, no, no, Rex. You said you would do anything to help her. Now, we both know who that is, don't we?

Rex: D-d-d-d-d-d-d-- you put words in my mouth, ok, twisted what I said.

Daniel: Look, I hope Jen didn't murder Paul Cramer, chiefly for my son's sake. But the only way she'll be totally off the hook is if the real killer is found. Oddly enough, that puts us both on the same side. We're both committed to finding out who the real killer is.

Riley walks out of Rodi’s carrying a stack of empty boxes. He spots Rex and Daniel in a heated discussion.

Daniel: Hey, Riley.

Riley: Interrupting something?

Daniel: No, no, no. What are those for?

Riley: (focuses on Rex) Packing. Jen and I are moving in together.

Rex turns away to hide his reaction.

At the police station, Michael and John continue to talk.

John: Come on, Mike, you must have some idea what you're looking for.

Michael: Well, I know what I don't want. I don't want to be alone anymore, John. I want somebody to share my life with.

John: What does that mean, exactly?

Michael: You know, someone to go to the movies with, read a book, you know, take a walk, hold hands -- you know, stuff like that, and bigger things, too.

John: Yeah, bigger things.

Michael: Yeah, you know, someone to share my day with, someone to tell what happened at the hospital, what patients I treated, or maybe we could just sit around and say nothing at all.

John: I hear you.

Michael: You know, I want somebody that I can pick up the phone and call any time of the day or night for no reason at all, you know, just to say hi. You know, I'd be happy knowing that when I left the hospital, there was somebody at home waiting for me. And I'd be happy waiting at home for her to come home to me. I know it sounds really stupid.

John: No, it doesn't sound stupid. I was thinking it sounds a lot like mom and dad. There's nothing wrong with that.

Michael: Not a thing.

At the Love House, Marcie and Jen are once again sitting on the couch.

Marcie: For the first time I’m starting to figure out who I am, you know, but I don't want to put aside my ambitions just because I'm in a relationship with somebody. For the first time in my life, Jen, I’m good at something. You know, my book was a success. I was a success, and I don't know if I can give up writing. I don't want to give up writing.

Jen: You have every right to feel proud about what you've accomplished, and any guy who loves you would not want you to give up your career.

Marcie: Oh, I know. I mean, on the other hand, I want a family and I want to have kids and I want to find someone to share the rest of my life with, you know, who's going to be a great father. I want to share everything with him, not just silly things, you know, like our favorite television show or our favorite movie. Important things like -- I don't know -- what we believe in and what we want for our future. I want to find someone who I don't feel insecure around. You understand? I mean, someone who, no matter how long I’ve known them, I can walk in the door and he's going to be happy to see me, or when I come in the door I'm happy to see him.

Jen: Well, is that somebody Michael?

Marcie: (gets teary eyed) That somebody was Al. But, you know, Michael, he was starting to make me believe that I could have it all again. He was.

Jen: Then what's the problem?

Marcie: (obvious tears now) I'm afraid that I'm going to wake up one morning and it's going to be gone, you know, that he's going to lose interest in me, move on, or that he'll fall in love with somebody else.

Jen: How could anybody lose interest in you? You're the smartest, funniest, most wonderful person I know.

Marcie: Spoken like a true best friend.

Jen: I mean that. Any guy would be lucky to have you in his life.

Marcie: Oh -- so I guess the question is, is just finding out who the right guy is, huh?

Jen: Simple as that.

Marcie: Oh, it's simple as that, huh? Well, if it's that simple, then how did you know with Riley? I mean, how did you figure out that he was the right one?

Jen: I don't know. I guess it's just the way he makes me feel. I mean, it's not like we haven't had our problems, though, things we've had to get past.

Marcie: You mean like Rex?

Jen: That's still a problem.

Marcie: Yeah, he's a big problem.

Outside of Rodi’s, Rex puts his game face on and turns back toward Riley and Daniel.

Rex: Well, congratulations, Riley. It's a big step, you and Jen moving in together.

Riley: Oh, thanks.

Rex: You just take care of her, all right? She might really need you soon.

Riley: What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Rex: There's no hidden meaning. I just want to find out who killed Paul Cramer. You should, too. Later.

Rex walks into Rodi’s.

Riley: What the hell is he talking about?

Inside of Rodi’s, Rex rushes over to Natalie who is sitting at the bar drinking heavily.

Rex: Hey.

Natalie: Shhhh. Don't ask me how I’m doing, because I might lie to you or I could be honest and tell you that I'm wallowing in self-pity, so why waste the time?

Rex: Thanks for the heads-up.

Natalie: What are you doing?

Rex: My business card -- home number, work number, cell, email address.

Natalie: I have this.

Rex: No, I know, but in case you ever misplace your address book, I want to make it easy for you to reach me, anytime, anywhere. You're going to be all right this time, Nat.

Natalie: I know. I mean, I'm not going to lose it again like when Cristian died, you know? I'm fine.

Rex: Look, I know we were supposed to hang out for a while, but would you mind if I take off? Something unexpected came up.

Natalie: Don't worry about it.

Rex: I can meet you later?

Natalie: Not necessary, you know? You've given me, like, a bajillion cards here. I think I can find you if I need you.

Rex whistles and gestures to the bartender to cut off Natalie’s drinks.

Meanwhile, outside of Rodi’s Daniel and Riley continue to talk.

Riley: You were discussing the Paul Cramer murder, weren't you?

Daniel: Yeah, yeah, Riley, but –

Rex strolls out and walks between them and continues on his way.

Rex: Ahem.

Daniel: That's really nothing new.

Riley: Jen's still a suspect, isn't she? Damn it. Dad, I love this girl and I'm about to move in with her. How can you stand there calmly and tell me you think she's capable of murder?

Later at Rodi’s, Michael and Marcie bump into each other.  Michael is carrying a takeout bag.

Marcie: Is that takeout? You getting takeout?

Michael: Yeah.

Marcie: Oh.

Michael: You, too?

Marcie: Yeah, yeah.

Michael: (very serious) Can I ask you a question?

Marcie: Yeah, anything.

Michael: Do you know what you want? I mean, do you know what -- what you really want?

Marcie: Yes. Yes, I do.

Michael: What?

Man: Marcie, your order's ready.

Marcie: (obviously anxious and intent on avoiding the real question Michael is asking) Oh, thanks. A cheeseburger, medium. I'm just getting a cheeseburger.

Michael: (disappointed) Yeah. Me, too.

Marcie: I guess I'll see you around.

Michael: Yeah.

Outside of Rodi’s, Riley and Daniel continue their heated discussion about Jen.

Riley: Jen, a murderer -- are you kidding me?

Daniel: Look, Riley, just calm down and we can talk --

Riley: Don't you stand there and tell me to calm down when you're accusing the woman I love of murder.

Daniel: Riley, I wish it wasn't so, but she had a motive and no alibi.

Riley: Oh, dad, so what? That goes for dozens of people in this town. But what do you care? All you care about is getting your conviction, it doesn't matter who it is, because you want to be governor, president, king of the world, and nothing's going to stand in your way.

Daniel: That's not fair, Riley. I'm just trying to do my job, that's all.

Riley: Please.

Daniel: Look, son, if Jen's in trouble, I’ll do anything I can to help. I know there were extenuating circumstances --

Riley: You want to help jen about as much as rex wanted to help her hiding the murder weapon, because she isn't guilty.

Daniel: Look, Riley, I wish I didn't have to --

Riley: You know what? Enough. I don't want to hear another word out of you, and you know what? Stay the hell away from me as long as you're going after Jen.

At the Love House, Jen is alone. Someone knocks on the door.  When she opens it Rex is standing there.

Jen: Hi.

Rex: I heard you and Riley are moving in together.

Jen: Yeah, we figured it's time.

Rex: Yeah, well, don't worry. I'm not going to make a scene or anything. I told you my stint in jail was a learning experience. I'm much more mature now. I'm sure you've noticed.

Jen: Actually, I have. You've done a lot of decent things lately.

Rex: Yeah, and I'm on a roll because I got another one. I brought you this. (Hands her a wrapped gift) I didn't have much time to shop, since I just found out about the move.

Jen takes it and opens the box.

Jen: Oh. Rex, it's pretty.

Rex: I thought you could put it by your front door for your keys, you know.

Jen: It's great. Thank you so much.

Rex: Well, I really do want you to be happy, Jen.

Jen: Even if it's with Riley?

Rex: Yeah, well, I love you, always will. You know that. But if you're happy with somebody else, I need to accept it. On the other hand, you know, if you're ever -- you know, if you ever feel like it's not working or you made a mistake or anything, I’ll be there. I'll always be there for you no matter what. Come here.

Jen moves into Rex’s arms and they hug. They break away from their hug.

Jen: Thank you for the gift and for the support. It means a lot.

Riley walks into the foyer whistling then spots Rex.

Riley: What's he doing here?

Rex: I should go.

Jen: I'll walk you out. I'll be right back.

Jen and Rex leave.  Riley looks around the foyer, which is dotted with a number of packed boxes.  Riley has a small box gift box in his hand.

Riley: I got to hide this somewhere.

He rummages in one of the boxes trying to hide the gift and sees an old letter.  He pulls the letter out and reads it.

Riley: "Dear Jen, thanks for giving me the money when I really needed it. I'll keep the secret forever. Love, Rex."

Friday, February 25, 2005

At Rodi’s, Natalie rushes over to Roxy and Rex who are hanging by the jukebox.

Natalie: Hey.

Roxy: So what's shaking, baby?

Natalie: That's what I'd like to know. What's going on? Are you in some kind of trouble again?

Rex: Now, why would you assume something like that?

Natalie: Because I'm usually right.

Rex: Well, it's not me this time. Jen and that boyfriend of hers, who isn't worth the spit it would take to gargle.

Natalie: Ok, what's going on?

Rex: He and Jen are moving in together, so I gave them a housewarming gift.

Natalie: Oh, how nice of you.

Rex: Anyway, Riley finds this old note from me to Jen.

Roxy: I think it was a love letter, honey.

Rex: It was a thank-you note for some money jen loaned me. But Riley’s such a paranoid idiot, he starts going off on jen about whether she whacked Cramer. You know, it's like he wants to prove she's the killer.

Natalie: But, see, that's not paranoid, that's smart.

Rex: You don't like Jen, I get it. It's just I --

Natalie: All I'm saying is if you're shacking up with a killer, it's nice to know before you move in together.

Rex: All right. I don't know if Jen did it or not, and I don't care. Guy had it coming to him. We all know that. And if she did do it, he should be out there trying to protect her, not put her away.

Roxy: And if she didn't do it, he should be trying to find out who did do it.

Rex: Yeah, he should, shouldn't he? If he really loved her, he'd be out there either way.

In the main corridor at the hospital, a nurse approaches Michael.

Nurse: Dr. McBain, I have something for you. It's from the nursing staff.

She hands Michael a small envelope.

Michael: Thank you. (opens the envelope and reads the card) Dinner for two at Cafe Diem? You really shouldn't have done this.

Nurse: You deserve to celebrate for being off probation. We all thought you got a raw deal.

Michael: Well, thank you.

Nurse: Have fun.

Michael: I will.

Paige walks by.

Paige: Hey. I just got a call from Mrs. Johnson, and she's still waiting to talk to somebody about her test results.

Michael: Yeah, I just spoke to her.

Paige: Oh, right. I'm glad to see you're staying on top of things.

Michael: Hey, listen, can I talk to you?

Paige: Mm-hmm.

Michael: I know that we haven't always gotten along. I was wondering if we could start over.

Paige: Yeah. Yeah, that's fine with me. But you know what? I'm not the one that you really need to be concerned about. I think you need to show the powers that be around here that you really are serious about your career, Michael. You know, I'm not so sure it's wise to be seen just standing in the hallway talking to nurses about where you're going to take your girlfriend for dinner.

Michael: Well, you know, that was -- you're right. And from now on, you're not going to have to worry about it because I don't have a girlfriend. Marcie and I are just friends.

At Rodi’s, Jen and Marcie walk in and head for a table.

Marcie: So, what's going on? Sounded like you needed to talk.

They sit down.

Jen: It's Riley. He got this letter. He found this letter that Rex gave me a long time ago. We had this big misunderstanding. It got pretty ugly.

Marcie: Riley just has to stop letting Rex get to him, that's all.

Jen: Rex was there.

Marcie: What? Why? What was he doing there?

Jen: He was there to wish me good luck.

Marcie: Hmm.

Jen: I know, I know. It's never that simple with Rex.

Hudson Prescott walks in and spots Jen and Marcie. He smiles and walks over to their table.

Hudson: Ah. Well, if it isn't my former partners at do-gooding.

Jen: Hudson, hey.

Marcie: Hey.

Hudson: Hey, how you doing?

Marcie: How you doing?

Hudson: Well, things couldn't be better. How about you guys?

In the meanwhile, the Balsom family continues their confab.  Rex has noticed Jen and is fixated on her.

Roxy: Hey. You know, you're thinking so hard, your brain's going to set your hair on fire.

Natalie: Look, Rex, whatever it is you're planning to do, Jen is not worth it.

Rex: She is to me.

Natalie: Yeah, I know. But, look, you went to jail for her once. Are you planning on making a return trip this time?

Roxy: Oh, honey, you look too good to be locked up in Statesville. I get a cataract just thinking about all those animals in there.

Rex: Stop stressing, both of you. I'm not going to do anything illegal.

Natalie: Ok, then what?

Rex: It's so obvious, I can't believe I didn't think of it before.

Natalie: What?

Rex: I'm going to help your Uncle Bo catch Paul Cramer’s killer.

Natalie: (rolls eyes) Dear Lord.

Rex: I'm serious, Natty.

Natalie: Yeah, I know. That makes you crazy. Look, Uncle Bo doesn't want your help, nor does he need your help.

Rex: Well, Jen needs my help. And, hey, it's not like the cops have gotten anywhere on their own.

Roxy: You know, it sounds like a plan to me.

Natalie: That's even scarier. Look, whatever it is you're planning on doing, make a Plan B. I got to -- I got to go.

Roxy: Hey, honey, you just got here.

Natalie: I'm sorry, I have something I got to do. Bye.

Rex: See you.

Natalie stalks away.  Roxy wraps her arm around Rex’s shoulders.

Roxy: You know, you're playing this one on the up and up, and that sounds like a big fat bore to me.

Rex: Not the way I play.

At Marcie and Jen’s table, they continue to talk to Hudson who has joined them.

Jen: I have to go to the restroom. Excuse me.

Marcie: Ok.

Jen stands up and walks toward the restrooms. She bumps into Rex who just happens to be in her path.

Rex: Hi.

Jen: Hey.

Rex: You here alone?

Jen: I'm with Marcie.

Rex: Oh. I get it. One little fight and the rock star kicks you to the curb, is that it?

At the hospital, Michael and Paige continue to talk.

Paige: You never left Marcie’s side the whole time she was in the hospital. I just assumed that you two -- that you were together.

Michael: We were. We're not anymore. You know how it is. We were both going in completely different directions. I mean, some things just aren't meant to be.

Paige: For what it's worth, I really am sorry.

Michael: Well, like you said, I really do need to focus on work right now, so --

Paige: Well, you do what you need to do, and just maybe -- maybe -- maybe you and Marcie really are headed in the same direction, after all.

At Rodi’s, Marcie and Hudson walk back to their table carrying drinks from the bar. They sit at the table once again.

Marcie: So how's grad school going?

Hudson: It's going great, a lot like undergrad.

Marcie: Well --

Hudson: But double the work, of course. But I found an apartment, though. You got to see it. It's nice, quiet. (smiles) On Love Road.

Marcie: (eyes widen) Shut up.

Hudson: Would I lie to you?

Marcie: You know, I'm glad everything is working out for you.

Hudson: Yeah, thanks. Well, not just me. You, too. I heard about the book. Congratulations.

Marcie: Thank you.

Hudson: And Jen and Riley are moving in together, I hear.

Marcie: Yeah.

Hudson: Yeah, right?

Marcie: Yeah, I guess things are working out for all of us, right?

Hudson: Yeah, well, finally. You know, I'd love to stay and chat, I just got to study. I got so much to do.

Marcie: That's fine.

Hudson: What are you doing Sunday?

Marcie: Nothing.

Hudson: Ok, because I'm having people over for the Oscars, and maybe you can come by?

Marcie: You watch the Oscars?

Hudson: Well, you know, it was Nick's idea. He says women love Oscar parties.

Marcie: Nick's smarter than I thought.

Hudson: Guess so. Tell Jen and Riley they can stop by, too. Here's my address. (starts writing the information on one of the cocktail napkins)

Marcie: Ok.

Hudson: I'm going to leave it right here.

Marcie: Sounds like fun.

Hudson: And this is my new number. Okay so call me up.

Marcie: All right, I will.

Hudson: Ok.

Marcie: See you soon.

Hudson: Yeah. Bye.

Marcie: Bye.

Hudson leaves.

In the meanwhile, Jen and Rex are leaning against the wall  next to each other talking quietly.

Jen: Everything is fine between Riley and me.

Rex: That why you're here without him?

Jen: Marcie and I just -- you know what? I don't have to explain myself to you.

Rex: Sure seems like you have to with Riley.

Jen: Look, he knows that note from you had nothing to do with Paul.

Rex: That why he had to give you the third degree?

Jen: What are you trying to do? Nothing you say is going to turn me against Riley.

Rex: Even when you know deep down who really loves you?

Jen: Rex, don't.

Rex: Well, you can't see it now. Eventually you will. Later.

Rex peels off and strolls away.  Jen looks conflicted and confused.

At the police station, Bo and Natalie are talking in his office.

Bo: I still haven't heard back from City Hall on that -- that job I was telling you about. But you know what? I've had a heck of a time filling Marcie’s old job right there. Would you like to do a couple of shifts?

Natalie: I don't think that would work out too well. Thank you, though.

Bo: Ok. We, I'll keep an ear out.

Natalie: Thanks. I really appreciate it.

Bo: It's no problem. Want some coffee?

Natalie: No. No, thanks.

Bo: I'm proud of you, Natalie.

Natalie: You are?

Bo: Yeah. Everything you've been through -- I mean, you know, you lost Cristian twice, but you're a strong young woman. You're brave. I know it doesn't seem like it right now, but you're going to be happy again.

Natalie: Thanks.

Bo: Sure. So there's something you wanted to tell me, huh?

Natalie: Yeah. It looks like Rex is going to start his own investigation on who killed Paul Cramer.

Bo: Oh, that's just what I need.

Natalie: Ok, I know, but please, don't go too hard on him. At least he's trying to do something good for once, right?

Bo: Yeah, but I can't let him interfere with a murder investigation. But, yeah, ok, ok. I'll go easy on him, just for you.

Natalie: Thank you. Look, I know you're busy. Here's his number.

Bo: Thanks.

Natalie: Thanks. See you later.

Bo: All right.

Natalie leaves.

Later, there is a knock on Bo’s door.

Bo: Yeah?

Rex: You wanted to see me?

Bo: Yeah, come on in. Have a seat.

Rex: Look, whatever you heard, I didn't do it.

Bo: No, relax. You're not under arrest. Yet.

Rex: What'd I do now?

Bo: Look, you've already interfered with the Paul Cramer murder investigation.

Rex: And I'm sorry. I shouldn't have hidden the gun.

Bo: And now I understand you want to play detective.

Rex: Who told you that? Never mind. I can guess.

Bo: One word, Balsom. Don't.

Rex: Why not?

Bo: Because this is police business, and you're about the furthest thing from being a cop that I’ve ever seen.

Rex: Commissioner, I'm in the middle of this already. Whoever killed Cramer used me. I almost went away for murder because of this guy.

Bo: "This guy"? Let me ask you something -- what if this guy turns out to be Jen Rappaport? Are you ready for that possibility?

At Rodi’s, Jen and Marcie are standing near the jukebox.

Jen: Too bad Hudson had to leave.

Marcie: Jen, I saw you talking with Rex. Want to tell me what he wanted, or do I even need to ask? I don't really know what to expect from Rex anymore.

Marcie: Wait a minute, wait a minute. What do you mean? Come back here.

Jen: He just surprised me a little bit, that's all.

Marcie: Look, Jen, I know it was really nice of him to come to the hospital and --

Jen: And the book party.

Marcie: Yes.

Jen: Michael probably would have been charged with assault if it hadn't been for Rex speaking up for him.

Marcie: Yeah, until the old Rex decided to show up again and screw everything up. Look, I know I may be the last person in the world that you want to get relationship advice from, but you have a great thing going with Riley. You don't want to screw it up just because Rex decides to come into the picture again.

Jen: Well, what am I supposed to do, just tell Rex to get lost?

Marcie: Yes! Yes, Jen, that is exactly what you want to do, unless you want to tell me that you're falling for Rex again.

Jen: I am not falling for Rex again, no matter what he does.

Marcie: All right, I hope not.

Jen: I'm not!

Marcie: Fine.

At the police station, Rex and Bo continue their discussion.

Rex: Jen didn't kill Paul Cramer.

Bo: And I have your word on that?

Rex: Come on, commissioner. I know you don't like me, and maybe I've given you a reason not to. But I care about jen, and I want her off the hook for this. I'd also like to nail whoever it was that set me up. What have you got to lose, Commissioner?

Bo: Oh, I don't know. My job, my sanity.

Rex: I can help you catch them.

Bo: And what would you do if you came up with something?

Rex: I'd hand it over to you.

Bo: You do anything that's just slightly out of line, I'll be all over you like a wet blanket.

Rex: Does that mean I can go ahead?

Bo: What that means is you keep your eyes and ears open and you stay out of our way. And you don't endanger one person's life. That includes yourself if you do, i will lock you up for the max. Is that clear?

Rex: Absolutely. (jumps up and stretches his hand out to Bo) Thanks, Uncle Bo. Be a pleasure working with you.

Bo: (ignores Rex’s outstretched hand) Two things, Balsom. Number one, I'm not your uncle. Number two, get out of here.

Rex leaves just as Daniel comes into the office through the other door.

Daniel: What's Balsom doing here?

Bo: I got a more important question for you. Why did you tell me that bank statement we found in Cramer’s belongings was a bum lead?

At Rodi’s, Marcie signs a copy of her book for a fan.

Marcie: You're welcome. I'm glad you liked the book.

Man: I can't believe such a scary story came from a sweet girl like you.

Marcie: Thanks again.

Jen: Isn't that weird, getting recognized like that?

Marcie: Yeah. Every time I have to sign an autograph, I can't even believe I'm doing it.

Jen: I propose a toast.

Marcie: Ok.

They raise their glasses of iced tea.

Jen: To celebrating the positive things in our lives, like "The Killing Club."

Marcie: And to your new apartment with Riley.

Jen: And to the best friend a girl could ever ask for.

Marcie: Right back at you.

They click their glasses.

At the hospital, a stretcher with Hudson on it is wheeled by Michael.

Michael: Whoa, hey, what do you we got here, guys?

Paramedic: Male, early 20s, second- and third-degree burns, airway's compromised.

Second paramedic: B.P. 90/50, pulse 110. Breathing is shallow.

Michael: Oh, my god. I know that guy.

At Rodi’s, Marcie is leaning on the bar sipping her iced tea.  She has a far away look on her face.  Jen walks up behind her.

Jen: All set. You ready? Marcie?

Marcie: Hmm? Oh, I'm sorry.

Jen: Are you thinking about Michael? I recognize that look.

Marcie: Yeah.

Marcie’s cell phone rings.

Marcie: Oh, it's him. Wonder what he wants? Hello?

Michael: Marcie, it's me. Listen, I have something to tell you.

Marcie: What's wrong, Michael? What's going on?

Michael: They brought a burn victim into the E.R. Earlier. He didn't last very long. Um -- I'm sorry, Marcie. You -- you know this person.

Marcie listens to Michael in stunned silence as he tells her what has happened.

Marcie: Michael, that's impossible. I just saw him here.

Michael: I'm sorry. Are you going to be ok?

Marcie: Yeah, yeah, I guess. I mean, Jen's here with me, so -- thanks for calling, ok?

Michael: No problem. I'll see you later.

Marcie: Ok, bye.

Jen: What happened?

Marcie: It's Hudson.

Jen: Is he ok? Did he get hurt or something?

Marcie: There was a fire in his apartment. He's dead.

At the hospital, Michael stares at Hudson.  His face is visible above the sheet and obviously burned.  Michael slowly pulls the sheet over his face.

Later at Rodi’s, Rex is at the bar drinking.  Roxy rushes up behind him.

Roxy: Ha! Drinks are on me!

Rex: Well, that's a first.

Roxy: I just saved someone's life today. I feel like that chick on "Alias." Hi-ya-ha!

Rex: Hey, the family is moving uptown. Guess who got the go-ahead from the Commissioner to do his own murder investigation.

Roxy: No kidding? The drinks are on you.

Rex: Ugh.

Roxy: (reaches for Rex’s beer bottle) Let me have some.

Natalie appears.

Natalie: Hey.

Rex: Hey, thanks for ratting me out to your uncle.

Natalie: Yeah, you're welcome. Ok, you called. I'm here again. What's going on? What's so important?

Roxy: (hooks arm around Rex) Just me and your brother. When the cops can't cut it, they call on us. We're the long leg of the law.

Natalie: Ok. I'm going home. I'm exhausted. Goodbye.

Natalie stalks away.
