Episode 23 "Give Me a Little Time..." Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2004
At Hallowed Grounds, Marcie and Michael are getting coffee. Michael: Marcie, I've always seen things a little differently than most people, so if you just give me a little bit of time -- Marcie: Ok. Michael: Thank you. Latte, skim milk. Marcie: Yeah. Come on, I'll go with you (spots Rex and Shannon). Oh, great. Michael: What? Marcie: Well, I keep telling Shannon to stay away from Rex because he's nothing but poison. I think she has a death wish. Marcie and Michael watch Shannon and Rex for a second then walk over to them. Michael: Shannon? How are things going over there at the Center? Shannon: Oh, haven't you heard? I'm trashing the place again. Marcie: No, all we said is that you were the only one without an alibi, all right? We all went to the football game, everyone except Shannon, and that's when the site got trashed again. Rex: Ok, hasn't anybody told you, Marcie? Shannon has an alibi. She was with me. Waitress: Here you go. Shannon: Besides, I thought we were past all this. I mean, come on, you guys finally admitted that it wasn't me trashing the site, and now you're going to start it all over again. I mean, why would I do it? Think about it. Marcie: I don't know. Shannon: I'm there, like, ten hours a day. Marcie: People do crazy things all the time. Just ask Rex. Michael: Shannon, just be careful, ok? Marcie and Michael walk away. Shannon: I've had it with this crazy town. Rex: Hey, you're not going to lose it on me, are you? Shannon: Nobody gets me; not River, not Adriana, not the kids at the Shack. I mean, they're practically running away from me, and just the other day Jen's mom started on me. Rex: Ok, don't antagonize Lindsay. Shannon: Why? Because she's going to pull some "Fatal Attraction" move on me? I don't think -- Rex: Shannon, there's a few things maybe you don't know about Lindsay. Michael and Marcie observe Shannon and Rex from a distance. Michael: You know, I just wish that my cousin Shannon had a better alibi than Rex Balsom. Marcie: Yeah, I know. Hey, let's not think about that, right, because we had a really great time with Eric and James, didn't we? Michael: Yeah, we did. Marcie: You were really cool with them. Michael: You know what I liked best about Eric and James? Marcie: What? Michael: They love you. Anybody who loves you is ok in my book. Marcie: I just wish that was enough for my dad, you know? Michael: Yeah. In the meanwhile, Rex continues to fill Shannon in on Lindsay’s somewhat tainted past. Shannon: Lindsay blew him away in the bedroom? Rex: Jen's dad. One shot right through the old ticker. Shannon: Why? Rex: She thought he was this old boyfriend of hers, a doctor. So just keep an eye out, ok? Be careful. Shannon: Me? You're the one that should be careful. It's like she's going after ex-lovers. Rex: Lindsay's been known to go after the other woman, too. Nora Buchanan has a few tales to tell on that score, so just watch your back, ok? Shannon: This is nuts. All right, let's get out of here. I'm getting kind of creeped out. Shannon and Rex leave. In the meanwhile, Marcie and Michael are sitting on one of the stuffed couches. Marcie: You know, I was thinking that if Ron could keep an open mind like you are, you know, maybe that would get him to come around, and then we could talk to my dad together. Michael: Anything's possible. Marcie: You think I'm dreaming. Michael: I think the problem is that Ron and Eric are brothers, ok? Now, listen, I can accept just about anything about anyone, but if John told me that he was gay -- Marcie: Oh, come on. Don't give me any of that code-of-brother crap. You know, Eric is my brother. Michael: Yeah, but it's different. You're his sister. I mean, it may not make any sense, ok, but sometimes when two brothers get into it, there's really no way to tell how it's going to turn out. Mark walks over to Marcie and Michael and hands Marcie an envelope. Mark: For you. Marcie: What is it? What happened? Oh, no, no, please don't even tell me that the construction site got trashed again. Shannon was just here. Mark: No, no, no, no, no, no, nothing's gone wrong. I've just been looking for you so I can give you this. It came in the mail this morning. Come on, open it up. If you don't, I will. Michael: What is it? Open it. Marcie: Well, Mark sent my novel, "The Killing Club," to an author that he took a class with. Michael: And he wrote you back? Marcie: Yeah. Michael: Well, that's a good thing, Marcie. Open it up. Marcie: Ok. I don't know -- I wonder what it says.
At the quarry, Shannon and Rex run into Adriana and Duke who are with Addie. Shannon decides to confront the tension between she and Adriana. Shannon: I am trying to say that I'm sorry. Adriana: Oh -- Shannon: It's really not like River and I were doing it on purpose. It just happened. Rex: Rex Balsom. Duke: Duke Buchanan. Rex: Hey. Shannon: Buchanan? How many Buchanans are there? Hi, I'm Shannon. Duke: Hi. Nice to meet you. Shannon: Nice to meet you. Now, Adriana, you've obviously moved on -- not that I can say that I blame you. Not one bit. Rex: Right, no harm, no foul, you know? Adriana: Shannon, you're not sorry, ok? And River may have just been some kind of conquest for you, but -- Shannon: Oh, get over yourself. He's gone. He's not coming back. He's probably working on some gorgeous New York hottie right now as we speak, and we're both out in the cold. Addie: I just saw a monster. Duke: Hey, you picked some pretty flowers there. Addie: Uh-huh, but we have to get a ladder and a Bo and get that monster out of his hole. Duke: A ladder and a Bo? Adriana: What monster? Addie, did someone scare you? Addie: No, silly. He was in a hole. But we have to get a ladder and a Bo and save him. Rex: Uh-huh. Shannon: Who's that? Rex: It's not our responsibility, but you know what? If it's contagious, we're just going to back up -- Adriana: You know what? Just leave her alone, both of you. Come on, Addie, let's go home, all right. It's not fun here anymore. Addie: Are we just going to leave the monster in his hole? Duke: Well, Addie, if he crawled himself in there, I think he can probably crawl himself out. Shannon: Well, isn't this just perfect. I mean, Marcie Walsh gets to insult me, Adriana gets to insult me, the kids at the Love Shack think I'm a criminal, and you're telling me that Lindsay’s going to, like, back me into an alley with a chain saw. What next? Rex: I don't know. But since we're finally alone, I've got some ideas.
At the coffee shop, Marcie opens the letter
and reads. Michael and Mark watch
her anxiously. Michael: Well? Marcie: Well, he liked my book. Mark: Yes! Michael: All right! Marcie: He said that I should send it to his editor at Hyperion -- Gretchen Young. Mark: Yeah, I knew he'd help. Marcie: He says that he's already told her all about me. Michael: See? I told you you could do it. Mark: Man, I can see it right now -- Marcie Walsh, the hottest name in mysteries, touring all over the U.S., book-signing parties, lines around the block, talk shows, everybody wanting your autograph. Michael: Hey, you know what? We should probably run down, get that manuscript, and drop it in the mail before the post office closes. Mark: Yeah, yeah, good idea. Marcie: Uh -- Mark: Marcie, what's up? Marcie: I'll think about it. You know, maybe. Michael: Think about what? Marcie: I just -- I -- I can't do this, ok? I'm sorry. I can’t. Mark and Michael stare at Marcie. Marcie: I mean what if Gretchen wants to give me notes on my novel? Do you remember what happened to you when you tried to give me notes on my novel? I got up and I stormed right out of the restaurant! Michael: Yeah, Marcie, that was -- Marcie: I mean, if I can't even listen to a little friendly criticism from someone who loves me, how can I be successful if I can't even listen to criticism? I mean, what if my novel doesn't even sell? What if I go traveling around the country to all these book signings and no one shows up and no one buys any of my books? I will be the laughingstock of the century! Mark: Hey, hey, hey, hey, Marcie, Marcie -- Marcie: And then I'll get all this bad press because no one will like me. They'll say that, "Oh, my God, she showed so much potential, and everybody believed in her," but nobody would buy my books! Nobody showed up! Michael: Marcie -- Marcie -- Marcie: What? Michael: Take a breath. In, out. Again. Marcie: I'm sorry. I got a little carried away, didn't I? Michael: Just a little bit. Listen, we are going to go home right now, ok, all of us, and we are going to be with you when you call the editor. Marcie: Gretchen. Michael: We are going to be with you when you mail the manuscript. Mark: And it's going to be just fine. Marcie: You think so?
In the meanwhile, Asa is stuck in a deep hole
near the quarry. He was abandoned
in the woods by Blair and stumbled into the hole. Addie discovered him but
couldn’t explain to Adriana and Duke what she’d seen in a way that they
understood. Asa: Oh, that dumb half-wit. What the hell is taking her so long? Oh, I can't -- I can't spend another night down here. Oh. Addie? Addie! Rex: You hear that? Shannon: No. What? Asa: Addie! Rex: No, that. Shannon: I don't hear anything. Rex: It sounds like somebody. I don't know what. Just stay here. I'll be back. Shannon: Stay here? You'll be back? Sure. Oh, my God. What if it's Lindsay? Asa: Addie -- for God's sakes, woman -- get me some help! Rex: Whoa! Asa Buchanan! Asa: Who's there? Oh! Oh, thank God. Somebody with half a brain. Rex, find a way to get me out of here. You're Roxy’s kid. You're smart. I know you'll figure something out. Rex: Well, there's a rope ladder by the swimming area. Asa: Oh. Perfect. Get it. That a boy. Rex: Well, first, let's talk price. You got your checkbook on you? Asa: What? Rex: It's time to deal, Asa, the deal of your life. Asa writes a check, put it in a shoe tie to a rope and Rex pulls the shoe up. He looks over the check. Asa: Satisfied, you little blackmailer? Rex: Oh. Well, looks good. Lots of zeros. Nice signature. Now, before you go off screaming bloody murder, I'm not just going to take this check and leave, ok? Asa: Oh, I'll tell you something, sonny boy; it'll be the last damn move you ever make. Rex: Right. Hold that thought. Listen, I got a friend with me, and I'll get her to help. Asa: Oh, I'm going to get out of here. If Manning and that she-devil Blair thought I was loco before, oh, they ain't seen nothing yet. Nothing.
Wednesday, Sept 29, 2004 At the Love House, Riley and Jen walk into the
foyer. Marcie and Michael are there. Marcie is obviously very nervous. Riley: Marcie, what's the matter? Michael: Marcie's dad is coming down from jersey for dinner, and Marcie’s a little nervous. Jen: Well, the last time you saw your dad, things went well, right? Marcie: Yeah, but that was because I never mentioned Eric or his wedding to James, not once. Riley: And you're going to tonight? Marcie: Yeah. I have to. Michael: You know, I was thinking -- you should probably, like, start out casual, you know? Wait until dinner's done, everybody's kind of full, and if it seems right -- Marcie: Yeah, that's not going to work. Michael: Why not? Marcie: Well, because I invited Eric to dinner, too. Michael is shocked by Marcie’s bombshell. Marcie: Eric and dad have not spoken since Eric told him about James. Now they're going to have to, and if dad can't accept it, then at least I'll be here to support Eric. Michael: I don't know, Marcie. I got a really bad feeling about this. There is a knock on the door and Jen answers it. Jen: Hi. Eric: Hi. Is Marcie Walsh here? Marcie rushes to Eric and hugs him. Marcie: Eric! Eric: Hey, sis! Marcie: Oh, I'm so glad you're here. Eric: Yeah, well -- for you. (Hands her a bouquet of flowers) Marcie: Oh, thank you. They're beautiful. Michael: Very nice to see you again, Eric. Eric: Good to be here. Marcie: Oh, wait, guys, come on over. I want to introduce you. This is my best friend in the whole world, this is Jen Rappaport. Jen: Hey. Marcie: And this is Riley Colson. Eric: It's so great to finally meet you. Marcie talks about you all the time. Jen: Same here. Eric: And you're the musician, right? Riley: On a good day. Nice to meet you. Marcie: I can't believe you're here. I'm so excited. You know, I know how busy you are with work and with planning the wedding. Riley: And congratulations on that. Eric: Oh, yeah, thank you. I'm in Philly for an extra couple days anyway. I'm still changing the graphics on that new ad campaign I was telling you about. Marcie: Yeah. Eric: Dinner with you is always great. Marcie's the only one in the family who is cool with the idea I'm marrying James. What? So, now you don't think I should get married, too? Marcie: No, no, no, no, of course not. I think it's great. You know, I'm just -- I'm not ok with everything that's going on between you and dad, so, you know, I'm just trying to help. Eric: How? There is a knock on the door. Everyone looks at each other. Marcie: Uh – Marcie opens the door. Charlie Walsh is standing there. Marcie: Hi, daddy! Charlie: How's my girl? Marcie: Um -- you remember your son, Eric? Charlie Walsh barely acknowledges Eric. A short while later, Jen and Riley are
leaving. Jen: Nice to meet you, Eric. Eric: Nice to meet you. Jen: See you. Nice to meet you. Charlie: You kids have fun. Riley: Nice to meet you. Charlie: Yeah. Riley: Bye. Marcie: Bye. Please, guys -- Charlie: They make a real nice couple. Eric: How do you know, dad? You just met them. They're nice because they're heterosexual? Charlie: They're a nice-looking pair that could have nice kids someday. That's what marriage and family is all about. Marcie: Dad -- Eric: No, here we go. Michael: Hey, hey, hey, guys! You know, maybe we could find some middle ground here, you know? I mean, agree to disagree, huh, about all the differences? Charlie: I got no problem accepting differences. What he's doing, though -- Eric: I'm not going to defend my decision to marry James. Charlie: I didn't ask you to. It's bad enough you live with him. Marcie: James is really great. If you would just spend some time with him, get to know him, then you would see! Charlie: I tried to be a good parent, but obviously I screwed it up. Eric: Dad, nothing you did turned me gay, ok? I was born this way. Charlie: That's not what Father Flannery says. He says I failed as a father. Eric: Dad, that's ridiculous, ok? After mom died, you were always there for us, always. You held the family together, dad. Charlie: I did the best I could. Marcie: I know you did. Daddy, please don't turn your back on Eric, ok? He loves you, and he needs you more than ever. We all do! Eric: And I always will, dad. But this is who I am, ok? I'm not going to change. And neither is my decision to marry James. Charlie: Then that's it. You might as well forget about it. Eric: Oh, come on, dad! Don't you love me? Don't you want to be a part of my life?
Outside of Rodi’s, Roxy and Paul take their
leave. Roxy: Hey, dude, I got to go back to the love shack. Paul: All right. Roxy: Lots of luck with your money problem. You know, sometimes you score when you least expect it. Paul: Yeah, sometimes. Roxy: Kiss, kiss. Roxy leaves and Paul walks up to Lindsay. Paul: Hey, excuse me? You know, you -- you really think you should be walking around here by yourself at night? Listen, why don't I -- why don't I give ya a lift? Lindsay: No, it's all right. It's just a few blocks. Paul: Right. Right, The Gallery. Yeah, I know you own The Gallery down on the docks. You're Jen's mom, right? Lindsay? Lindsay: Have a good night, Paul. Paul: Listen, can I ask you one more thing? Lindsay: Ok. Paul: Well, what's a pretty lady like you all alone working at night, huh? I mean, I'm sure there's lots of guys that would love to take you out. Lindsay: Are you running a dating service? Paul: No, no. Sorry. But if you want, we could head back down to the diner. You know, I'm hungry. That -- that cup of coffee with Roxy just didn't cut it. Lindsay: No, thank you. Paul: Oh, come on. Come on. You know, you could take your takeout and -- listen, I just -- I don't like to eat alone. You know, it's kind of a childhood thing. Whenever I got in trouble, my dad made me eat alone in my room. Lindsay: That's awful. Paul: Yeah, well, what do you say? Lindsay: Well, maybe a ride. I shouldn't be out here walking alone, so I'll let you walk me home. Paul: Ok. Riley and Jen walk up in time to see Lindsay and Paul walk away. Riley: Hey, there's your mom. Jen: With Paul Cramer? She couldn't be that desperate for company. Then again -- Riley: What? Jen: Forget it. Riley: Look, something's bothering you. Come on, tell me. Jen: My mom's just really lonely lately, more than usual. Riley: Well, you think she's upset because she saw rex with Shannon? Jen: No, she wanted me to move out of the love shack and move in with her at The Gallery. Riley: No, I know. I was there. I remember. She just misses you. Jen: She's done some really extreme things to keep the people that she loves close to her, and I thought she was better now, but -- Riley: But what? Jen: I don't know. I don't know, it's just -- ok, it's -- when I was telling her about some of the weird stuff that was happening at the cottage, she was really interested in the specifics. Riley: Well, maybe she was just creeped out like you were. Jen: Ok, but why does it always happen when I'm around? And that song, the 1950s song -- she knew the song I was talking about, that I was humming. She knew it. Riley: Jen, what are you saying? Jen: I don't know. I -- Riley: You think your mom's haunting the love shack? Jen: I know. It's crazy, right? She wouldn't do that. Riley: Oh, I don't know. Jen: Would she? Riley: Come here. Riley hugs Jen.
Back at the Love House, the discussion between Eric and his father has become heated. Eric: You can't even say you love me? Michael: You know what, guys? Why don't we just bring this down a notch, ok? Eric: Is my being gay so disgusting to you, dad? Repulsive? What? Are you that ashamed of me? Marcie: No, look, daddy's just never been the type to say that he loves us, but I know that you do, right? You love all of us. Eric: Yeah, how do I know that, Marcie? He won't even acknowledge the existence of the man I love, the person I'm going to marry! Charlie: Do you think this is easy for me? Do you have any idea what it's like? Eric: No, I don't because you won't talk to me, dad! Charlie: The guys I work with, my poker buddies over at the lodge -- they all know what you are! They pity me to my face, but behind my back, they're laughing at me. Same thing with everyone at church. I'm the poor guy who's got a homo for a son. The whole family is a butt of a ton of jokes! Eric: I'm sorry people give you a hard time because of me, dad, ok? But they're ignorant, bigoted jerks! Charlie: They're my friends! Eric: And I'm your son! Marcie: Stop it, both of you! Stop it now! Michael: Ok, ok! It is obvious that we are not going to resolve this in one night. Mr. Walsh, you feel certain ways about things and you have your whole life. Nobody is asking you to change your mind overnight. Are you asking him to do that? Marcie: No. Michael: But we're here and we're dealing with the issue at hand, and that is a start. Right? Marcie: Right. Michael's right. Can’t we just talk about this? I don't want it to destroy my family. Come on, I love you both. Eric: Me, too. Charlie: I love all my kids. That doesn't change anything. If you go through with this wedding, I won't be part of it. Eric looks crushed. Charlie: I got to be at work early tomorrow. Eric: So that's it, dad? That's how it's going to be? We're not even going to -- we're not even going to finish this? Charlie: There's nothing left to say. Two guys getting married -- that's not right. That's not normal. I don't want it in my home and I don't want it in my life! This isn't what I wanted for my son. Marcie: Dad? Dad, don't go! Eric: Dad -- you always said that what you wanted for me was to be happy. And I am, dad. I'm happy. Charlie Walsh looks at Eric for a second then
throws up his hands and walks away.
