MARCAL SCENES ACT II Page 39
Episode 25 How Deep Is Your Love? Friday, October 22, 2004 At Rodi’s, Marcie and Michael are sitting at a table. Marcie: I don't see Jen. She was supposed to
meet us here, right? Michael: Yeah. She's probably just running
late. Marcie: Oh, you know, I think I’m going to
call her anyway. Michael: I don't think your best friend's
going to miss your birthday. Marcie: We do have a lot to celebrate, don't
we? Michael: Yeah, especially your new book. Marcie: No, no, no, no! Don't jinx it, ok?
"The Killing Club" -- it's not even published yet. Michael: It's going to be. Marcie: Can you believe that I'm going to be
an author? And in less than a month, when the Love Center finally goes up, I'm
going to graduate. Finally, thank God. You know, but the best thing out of this
all -- do you know what it is? Michael: What? Marcie: That you got to know Eric better. Michael: Yeah. He's actually a good guy. Marcie: I think it's so great that you
understand, you know, that he's just a regular guy, and that he wants to marry
the man that he loves. Thank you. Michael: For what? Marcie: For always making me happy. Michael: Um -- I have a surprise for you
tonight, and -- Marcie: You do? Michael: Yeah -- and I -- I think -- well, at
least I hope that it's going to make you very, very happy. Marcie: Well? What is it? Michael: You should go and call Jen. Marcie: Oh, -- you can't do that to me! That is so cruel! All right. Fine, all right? I will go, but it better be a very good surprise. At the Love House, Paul and Jen are working at cross purposes. Jen: You did something for Kelly? Paul: Oh, yeah, I did something major, and
never asked for anything in return. Jen: What did you do? Paul: You know what I tried to do? I tried to
be a good brother. What did I get, huh? I got a family who hates me! Kevin
Buchanan wants to run me out of town! And Natalie? Well, I thought she cared
about me, so you know what? I don't want to hear any grief from you. Jen: We've already been through this -- you
passed out. What was I supposed to do, just wait all night for you to wake up? Paul: Oh, baby, I'm awake now, huh? Jen: Wait -- somebody might walk in. Paul: Oh, we'll go up to your room, huh? There is a knock on the door. Paul: Oh, you're not going to answer that. Jen: Wait, listen -- it's probably Marcie.
It's her birthday! I'm supposed to be at her party right now! Paul: It's ok! You're not going to make it.
We're going to have a party of our own right here, right now, baby. Jen looks panicky. Paul: Come on, Jen, huh? I'm not a bad guy.
I've just had some bad luck, huh? Jen: I never said that you were. Paul: Well, you might even like this, huh? Jen: Please, no -- Paul: You never know until you try. Paul begins to aggressive kiss Jen. Jen: Please, wait -- wait, Paul -- stop! Stop!
Marcie rushes in. Marcie: What are you doing? Get the hell away
from -- get out of this house! Get out! Paul: We're not done yet! Paul leaves. Jen: I was supposed to be at your party. Marcie: Oh, forget about that. Are you all
right? Jen: (clearly distraught) Marcie -- Marcie: (hugs Jen) It's ok, Jen. It's going to be ok. At Rodi’s, John is sitting with Michael. Michael: So how's Evangeline doing? John: A little more shook-up than she's
willing to admit. Michael: Yeah, well, you know, getting
attacked like that would do it to just about anybody. I still can't believe that
a total stranger would attack her like that just because she's black. John: She told me things like that had
happened before, just never got violent. Nothing will keep her down long,
though. She -- she stayed with me for a few days. Michael: Really? How was that? John: Except for the circumstances, I think I
could get used to it. Later, Marcie still has not returned and Michael is clearly frustrated. Michael: Man, I wish Marcie would hurry up and
get back here. You know, she always has such an interesting perspective on
things, you know? John: What am I, chopped liver? Michael: Oh, sensitive, huh? You know, it --
it's like even if I didn't pass my boards, right, and I didn't ever become a
doctor, but at least I have the thing that's most important to me. Ok. I might
as well tell you. I'm going all the way big-time for Marcie’s birthday. John: Yeah? What'd you get her? Michael shows John a ring. John: Is that what I think it is? Michael: It's what you think it is. I'm going to ask Marcie to marry me. At the Love House, Marcie continues to comfort Jen. Marcie: You've got to let me call John! Jen: No, I don't want the police involved. Marcie: Paul attacked you! Jen: No, I did this myself! I did something
really stupid. Marcie: Well -- well, then just tell me what's
going on, ok? Jen: Riley and I broke up. Marcie: What? Jen: He -- he caught me coming out of Paul’s
motel room. I didn't do anything, I didn't sleep with him, but it looked really
bad. Marcie: Well, then what did happen? Jen: I explained it to Riley. It's really
complicated, but -- Marcie: But what? What? He didn't -- he didn't
believe you? Jen: He did, but he was mad because I didn't
come to him instead of trying to fix it myself, and he's right. That's what I
should've done. Marcie: No, listen, he probably just needs
some time to cool off, that's all. All right, I'm sure that you two can work
this out. Jen: No. Riley deserves somebody who's not a
total screw-up. Marcie: You're not a total screw-up, Jen! Jen: No, he shouldn't waste his time, because
I'm just going to mess things up. Marcie: No, you are not! When is Riley coming
back from out of town? Jen: Tomorrow. Marcie: All right. You know, I bet that he
wishes he could talk to you about this right now. Why don't you just go give him
a call? Jen: He's already left three messages. I can't
call him back. Marcie: Why not? Jen: Because he's figured it out by now -- I'm
damaged goods, and I'm never going to change. Marcie: Jen? Jen? I want you to tell me what Paul did to you! What did he do that made you feel so worthless? At Rodi’s, Michael is anxious to hear what John thinks about his plans. Michael: So what do you think? John: I think it's great, Michael.
Congratulations. Michael: Well, don't congratulate me yet. She
-- she hasn't said yes. John’s cell phone rings. John: She will. Excuse me. (answers phone)
McBain. What? I'll be right there. I'll be right -- I got it. (breaks the
connection) Michael: What's up? John: I -- I think we got a lead on the guy
that attacked Evangeline. Michael: Oh, you -- you need me to come down
to the station and do a lineup? John: We might. (stands up to leave)
I'll let you know. Hey -- you concentrate on that. Good luck with that. Michael: Yeah, well, you know, if she says
yes, maybe you'll give it some thought yourself. John: Good one, Michael. John leaves. At the Love House, Marcie and Jen continue to talk. Jen: Paul didn't do anything. He just reminded
me who I am. Marcie: No, he didn’t. All he did was make
you feel horrible about yourself. Oh, I could just kill him! Jen: Somebody should, but I don't want you to
worry, ok? It's your birthday, it's your party. Just -- please go. Please go and
have fun, ok? Marcie: Jen, who cares about my birthday? Jen -- Jen, don't go. Monday, October 25, 2004 At Rodi’s, Michael is waiting at a table alone. Marcie still has not returned for her birthday celebration. Michael studies the engagement ring he bought for her. Waitress: Oh, it's beautiful! Michael: Yeah. Hey, listen, could you do me a
favor? Just make sure that you put right on top of the cake, ok? Waitress: You're getting engaged on a study
date? Michael: Oh, I'm studying for my medical
boards. I got to take every second I can get. Marcie rushes over to the table. Marcie: I'm sorry I'm late. Michael: Hey. Marcie: Hey. Michael: Where were you? You said that you
were just going to go check on Jen. Marcie: Yeah, well, she was really upset. You
know, her and Riley are having some problems and she just needed a shoulder to
lean on, you know? And then Gretchen, my editor at Hyperion, called -- Michael: Yeah, I know who Gretchen is. Marcie: Oh. Well, she just had some questions
about the cover for "The Killing Club," and then Eric called. He
wanted to talk about the wedding and -- well, where's John? I thought Evangeline
was coming, too. Michael: Well, they couldn't wait around
forever. Marcie: Oh. Michael: (obviously irritated) Happy
Birthday, Marcie. Marcie: Michael, what's going on? Michael: Nothing. What? I'm just having dinner
with my girl. Marcie: No, something is bothering you, I can
tell. Come on, tell me what it is. Michael: This is your night, Marcie. Marcie: It's because I was late. Listen, I'm
really sorry, ok? I will call John and Evangeline tomorrow and I'll apologize,
ok? It's just -- I just have a lot going on right now. Michael: Yeah, I know -- your work, your
school, your book, your family, your brother's wedding, your friends. Seems like
you got time for everybody else in your life -- everybody but me. Marcie: What? Natalie comes over to the table. Natalie: Have -- have you seen John? Michael: Well, he was here earlier, but he had
to take off. Why? Natalie: Oh, it's nothing. Michael: She doesn't look so good. Marcie: Michael, we were talking. We were
talking about how you think I don't have any time for you anymore. Isn't that
what you just said? Michael: Marcie, let's not do this tonight.
It's your birthday. Marcie: You know what? You might as well
finish because I'm not going to be able to forget about this, ok? Michael: Ok. I think I'm a pretty good
boyfriend. Marcie: I didn't say that you weren't. Michael: I supported you when you were
insecure about sending in your book. Marcie: I know. Michael: I went all the way to New York City
with you so that you would have somebody there when you were done with your
meeting. Marcie: How many times do I have to thank you
for that? Michael: Let me finish. I was with you the
entire time when you were fighting with your dad about Eric's wedding. I stood
up to your father without even knowing him. Do you know how hard that is for a
guy? Marcie: You know I would do that for you,
Michael, I will, whenever you need me to do it. Michael: Yes, I know that, Marcie! It's just
-- Marcie: What? What? You probably would never
need me to do that for you, though, would you, because your head is on straight,
Michael. You don't need my help for anything, do you, ever? What is that? Michael: I need to know this cover to cover
for my medical boards -- this and god knows how much more! Marcie: I didn't know that your boards were
coming up, Michael. Michael: You never asked. Marcie: Why didn't you just tell me about the
boards, Michael? Michael: I didn't want to ruin your birthday,
Marcie. Listen, I love you. It's just my idea of a perfect relationship is one
that's a little more equal. Marcie: You set me up, didn't you? You were
just waiting. You were just waiting to see how long it would take me to notice. Michael: You didn't notice me studying when we
were in New York? Marcie: Michael, you're a resident! You're
always studying, ok? I didn't think that much of it! Michael: You see, that's it. That's what I'm
talking about. I know that you have a lot of incredible things happening in your
life right now, and I am excited for you. You deserve this and so much more. But
it might be nice if every once in a while you got a little excited about
something that was going on in my life! Marcie: What are you saying? Are you saying
that I don't care about you? Michael: No, Marcie, I know you love me. Marcie: Then what, Michael? What is this all
about? What do you want from me? Michael: Ok, take tonight, for instance. I
planned a spectacular night for you with my family, my brother and his
girlfriend, and once again, everybody else was more important than me! Marcie: I can't believe that you're doing
this. Michael: I didn't want to. You asked. Marcie: I didn't know that you were storing
all these feelings for god knows how long, ok? In my perfect relationship,
people don't store up their feelings and then just explode at you when you least
expect it! It was never like this with -- Michael: Say it. Go ahead. Go ahead and say
it. It was never like this with Al. Marcie: I -- I wasn't comparing you to Al, ok?
Michael: Yeah, but that's what you were going
to say before you stopped, right? Marcie: No, I wouldn't, I didn't. Michael: Look, I am not jealous of your
relationship with Al, ok? I understand that what you two had was very special.
But the truth is there are a lot of things that you and Al never had to deal
with. Marcie: Excuse me? Michael: Real life, Marcie -- paying bills,
school, work, family. These are the factors that make or break a relationship,
and you have never had to deal with them in a relationship. Marcie: I'm not listening to this. I'm not
listening to what you're saying anymore. Michael: We need to talk about this! What, are
you just going to walk away? Marcie: You know what, you have no idea about
my relationship with al. You have no clue what we went through! Michael: This has nothing to do with your
relationship with al! This has nothing to do with al! This has to do with you
and me! Marcie: Call me crazy, Michael, but I think
I've dealt with enough from you for one night with telling me that I'm selfish.
I'm going to spend the rest of my birthday by myself. Marcie leaves in a huff. Waitress: What happened to your girlfriend? Wednesday, October 27, 2004 At the Love House, Marcie and Jen are in the foyer. Marcie: Hey. Jen: Hey. Marcie: So, did you call Riley yet? Jen: I can't talk to Riley. Marcie: Yeah. Well, I feel the same way about
Michael. Jen: Why? Marcie: I think we broke up. Jen: What? What happened? Marcie: Well, he decided to tell me on my
birthday that he thinks I'm a selfish egomaniac. Jen: He did not say that. Marcie: Well, he didn't say that exactly, but
he might as well have. You know, he says all that I care about is getting my
book published and LU. And my friends and my family and that I have time for
everyone and everything else except him. It's like he says that I don't have
time for him anymore. Jen: That is not true. Marcie: I know! Jen: I mean, what is wrong with him? You're
trying to graduate, and this book deal is huge. He should be thrilled for you. Marcie: I thought he was, you know? But
sometimes I look at Michael and I see the same selfish, stubborn, ignorant man
he was when I first met him. Jen: Well, some people can't change. I tried to for Joe, but I screwed that up. And then I met Riley. I'm just hopeless. I screwed that up, too. At Rodi’s, Riley is talking to his father. Riley: Yeah, but that was then, and now I just
don't want to screw it up. Daniel: Ok. All right. Think about Jen for a
minute. What's the first thing that comes to your mind? Riley: That's easy -- how crazy I am about
her, you know, and how I just want to forget this whole crap with Paul Cramer
and move on. Daniel: Fine. Just say that. Riley: I did and she ran out. Daniel: Son, this time don't let her. At the Love House, Marcie and Jen continue
their conversation. Marcie: You know, Riley has been trying to
call you. Why don't you just give him a call? Jen: Because I already know what he's going to
say. It's the same thing I've heard from Joe and Cristian. Riley doesn't deserve
to be with a liar. Marcie: No, Paul is the bad guy here, ok, Jen?
He tried to blackmail you. You were just trying to protect your mom. Jen: Yeah, and I did a really great job. There is a knock on the door. Marcie: You were doing the right thing, Jen.
That's what counts. Marcie opens the door. Marcie: Rex. Rex: Marcie. (brushes past Marcie and
rushes over to Jen) Hey, great news -- got the website shut down. Jen: Yeah, I guess you would. It was your
tape, and you're not even getting a cut. Rex: Look, I'm sorry I ever made that stupid
tape, ok, but at least it's over. Jen: No, it's not over for my mom. She's
totally humiliated. And Paul still thinks that I owe him. Marcie: Well, maybe we should call John. You
know, I mean, what if Paul tries to come back? Jen: No, I'm ready to deal with Paul. Rex: No, no, no, no way. I'll handle Cramer. Jen: How? Rex: Look, I'll do whatever I have to, ok? You know I'd do anything for you. You got a problem, I'll solve it. At Rodi’s, Riley and Daniel continue to talk about Riley’s relationship with Jen. Daniel: Do you feel like you need to take a
step back from Jen? Riley: No. I mean, yeah, ok, I did at first,
but -- Daniel: It's ok, Riley. You were hurt. Riley: Yeah, and it was right after the thing
with flash. Daniel: Look, son, if you close yourself off,
you'll lose. Take it from a guy who's damn glad he took a chance. Listen, maybe
things will work out between you and Jen. But, look, if you're just going to
anticipate the pain, you won't get anywhere. You have to think about the good
things in your relationship, too. Riley: I mean, there's so many things that I
would miss. I'd miss her smile. I'd miss just being with her, you know, staying
up all night talking, me playing her some songs and her thinking some of them
weren't so good. Daniel: Yeah, it's pretty rare to find
somebody who's willing to be that honest, isn't it? Riley: You know, I didn't tell you this, but
we had decided to move in with each other when this Love Center was done, and
she already said yes. Mind if I go? Daniel: Not at all.
At the Love House, Marcie lays into Rex. Marcie: Jen doesn't need your help, Rex, ok?
None of this would've happened if you'd just kept your hands off of her mother! Rex: Look, I want to make it up to her! Jen,
you know I care about you. Marcie: Oh, like you care about Shannon. Or
are you just using her like you use everyone else, Rex? Rex: Would you just, like, lay off? This is
between Jen and me! Marcie: No, Jen's my best friend, and I'm sick
and -- Jen: Shut up, both of you! I know you're
trying to help, but it's too late anyway. I've already let down my mom and
Riley. He was the best thing that ever happened in my life. Marcie: Jen, Jen, you don't know that it's
over with him yet, ok? Jen: Yeah, but I made a mistake. I made the
wrong choice, and it's Paul, because he's the one that put me in that position.
He made me feel totally helpless. Marcie: That slimeball should be in jail. Rex: Well, first I'd like to put him in the
hospital. Jen: Now I know how my mom felt when she lost
Troy, like she had to do something. Marcie: "Something"? Jen, your
mother committed murder. Rex: Look, you don't need to do anything, ok?
That's my job. I'll handle Cramer. Jen: No, Rex, I'll handle it. Marcie: What does that mean, Jen? Riley: I need to talk to you. Jen: I can't. Jen runs away. Rex: Jen, hold on. Marcie: No, no, no, Rex, you leave her alone
for once in your life! Rex: Would you get out of my way? Jen needs
me! Marcie: No, she doesn't! She's very vulnerable right now! You're the last thing she needs! Later Marcie is alone sitting on the stairway.
She obviously distressed and talking to herself. Marcie: Michael, what should I do about Jen? I
just don't know what -- no, I can't call him. Nothing's changed. There is a knock on the door.
Marcie opens the door. Matthew: Trick or treat. Nora: (talks like she’s a pirate)
Trick or treat, matey! Argh! Marcie: Happy Halloween! Nora: Happy Halloween to you. Marcie: Come on in. Matthew: Where's Jen? Marcie: Oh, she's not here. Nora: Oh, that's too bad. Ooh, you know what
you should do? You should go take an inventory of your bag and see what else you
can get from there. You've got some good stuff. Marcie: Yeah. Nora: So, I -- I happened to be with Daniel
and I heard about the Jen and Riley thing. How's she doing? Marcie: Not so good. And I have no idea where
she went, but she had her mind set on something.
