Episode 5 Spring Breaks & Computers Fail
March 19, 2004 (Friday) Setup: Marcie & Michael are on his bed. There are books scattered at the foot of the bed and Marcie is working on a laptop computer. Michael is snuggling next to her and kissing her neck. Marcie: (laughs) This is better than the Caribbean. I don't tan, anyhow. We have our own little island. I'm on spring break and you're off-duty. Michael: Yeah, but I'm on-call. If the E.R. Gets crazy, they'll page me. Marcie: No. No, that's not going to happen, which means we have the rest of the day to just be us. Michael: Hmm. So, what are we going to do?
Marcie: What if she lives with her dad and her brothers? Stop. Michael: Yeah, like a certain you-know-who that we both know. Marcie: Ok, ok, maybe she'll only have one brother and he'll be nothing like any of mine. Michael: And she'll have a boyfriend who's sweet and handsome and dead sexy. Marcie: Stop. And smart and generally perfect, but not at all based on you. Michael: No. Marcie: Maybe she should have two boyfriends. Michael: No. Marcie: Why? Michael: Well, because. Ok, ok, she could have two boyfriends, but she'd have to be like a wild chick -- you know, like that girl, the one that you were telling me about that used to sit at your table at the cafeteria, the one who came up with all those really grisly ideas on how to kill -- Marcie: Oh, Leslie. Michael: Yeah, Leslie. She was -- interesting. Marcie: Yeah, Leslie was interesting, all right. Marcie: No, no, no, I can't -- I can't believe I'm trying to write this novel. Michael: You're not trying. You're doing it. It's going to be great. Marcie: I guess. Michael: Are you still going to call it "The Killing Club"? Marcie: I don't know. It is kind of loosely based on that group that I had in high school, you know, where everybody was trying to make up all those stories about people that they hated and killing them. Michael: I'll kill you. I'll kill you with kisses. Ha-ha-ha. Michael's pager beeps. Michael: Oh -- Marcie: Oh, what? Michael: Beeper. Marcie: No. Michael: Hospital. Marcie: No! Michael: Sorry, I'm sorry. Marcie: No, Michael -- Michael: I have to -- I have to go. Marcie: No, you don't. Michael: I do. Marcie: No.
Michael: I'm sorry. Marcie: Please? Michael: Bye. Marcie: Please? Oh. Michael: Bye. Marcie: Michael. Marcie flops back on the bed.
At the hospital, Stephen Haver has been brought into emergency after being shot at the courthouse. He is rushed into surgery. Michael walks out and finds John waiting in the hall. John: Hey, Michael. Michael: Hey, John. John: Haver --He in surgery? Michael: Yeah. Dr. Kingsley got him stabilized, rushed him over to O.R. What the hell happened? John: Someone got a gun in the courthouse. I don't know how. Security was tight. Michael: Do you think it was like last time? Was it one of Haver's victims? John: Don't know. Haver going to pull through? Michael: I don't know. He's got massive internal injuries. I'd be amazed if he made it out of surgery.
Later, Michael comes out of the OR and sees John. Michael: Ok, Haver made it. They're moving him to recovery, but it's really dicey. John: He say anything? Michael: He's unconscious. Listen, if he starts to stabilize, they're going to move him over to I.C.U. John: Will I be able to talk to him? Michael: Maybe. Nurse: Hey, Michael, I heard your mother was a big hit at Capricorn last night. Michael: Yeah, she's got a set of pipes on her, doesn't she? Nurse: Yeah, we all want free tickets next time. Michael: Yeah, I'll see what I can do. Man, I am really psyched, you know? I'm so psyched about our family living together again. Aren't you? What? John: You're -- you're different now, Michael. Family wasn't that important to you growing up. Michael: Well, I was wrong. What's the sense of being a big-shot doctor if you've got nobody to share it with? Nobody to care about? John: This is Marcie, isn't it? Michael: Pardon? John: She's getting you to open up. Michael: Man, she makes me so happy. John: No kidding. Michael: You know what that girl's doing right now? She's writing a mystery novel. John: Is that a fact? Michael: Yeah. Man, she's amazing. John: Well, let's just hope she writes a good one. The scene switches to Michael’s room, where Marcie is still sitting on the bed. She is working fiercely on the computer and talking to herself. Marcie: "He was lying at the bottom of the stairs -- what was left of the stairs after the fire had --" Michael is just going to be blown away when he sees how much I've written. Something happens with the computer. She taps it on the side. Marcie: No -- what's wrong? No! No! No, no, no, no, no, no! Come on, come on! Oh, god, why is this happening? No, come on, please! Please, no! Please, please, please don't do this to me! I've always been so good to you. Please, come on! No, give me back my pages! Meanwhile, at the hospital, Michael continues to talk to John. Michael: They're moving Haver to I.C.U. Listen, let me go check and see if I can get you in. John: Thanks. Michael leaves and returns a while later. Michael: I'm sorry, John. You're going to have to wait a few minutes before you go in there and see him. John: He's still conscious, right? Michael: Yeah, and he's asking for a cop. Michael’s cell phone rings. He answers it. Michael: Hello? Marcie: Michael? Michael, it's frozen. I pleaded, I begged, I promised it anything that it wants, but it's frozen! Michael: What is? Marcie: My computer! I've written pages and pages of stuff, but they're all frozen! Michael: Ok, take it easy. When I get home, I'll see what I can do, ok? In the meantime, don't worry about it. You wrote it once. You can always write another version. Marcie: No, no, I can't! I can't! It's some of my best stuff. I can't write it again. I was really getting into it! Nurse: Doctor, he's hemorrhaging. Michael: Marcie, I have to go. Michael rushes into Haver’s room. The monitors are beeping. He tries to get Haver to relax. Michael: Just -- just lie back, Dr. Haver. Just lie back, ok? Haver is determined to say something. He coughs up blood. Nurse: He suddenly started hemorrhaging. Michael: We need to get him over to O.R. Right away! Stabilize him and get him to O.R. Stephen: The man who did this -- Michael: Just lie -- Stephen: I know the man who did this. I know him. He murdered me. He -- he's John McBain. John Mc-- The monitor flat-lines. Michael: Ok. One amp epi. No pressure! Come on, come on!
Tuesday, March 23 Setup: Marcie is still in Michael’s room. She is sitting at his desk with her computer in front of her. She is talking on the phone. Marcie: Yeah, yeah, boyfriend was going to help me figure out how to get it back, but he's still on duty at the hospital. Listen, can't you just help me figure out how to get my chemistry notes back? I really need them. No. No, no, no, it's not just one document. Well, I was writing a book. It's a book, and it's gone! I don't know. How the heck am I supposed to know how it froze? I wouldn't be calling you if I knew how it froze! Yes, I'm not stupid. I think I would know if the power went out. (the lights flicker out) Oh, damn it! Damn. Outside in the hall, Nigel and Roxy are messing around with a fuse box. Nigel: Now look what you've done. Roxy: Well, you want me to help you or not? Nigel: Oh, Dr. McBain and Mr. Walsh must be out. I'm sure otherwise that one of them would be complaining already. Roxy: You know, honey, I don't really know we did this at all because I think the juice was off before I ever flipped the switch. Nigel: Maybe it's Mr. Buchanan. Maybe he's still trying to take my hotel away from me.
At the hospital, Dr. Long and Dorian are standing in an examining room having a conversation. Michael is watching them through the window. Dr. Long: As you well know, Victoria Davidson is a longtime member of the hospital board and a prominent member of this community. Dorian: I'm aware of that, doctor. I've known her a lot longer than you have. Doctor: Well, then, when you realized President Davidson was in need of medical attention, why put her in the care of a first-year resident? Michael walks into the room. Michael: With all due respect, Dr. Long, if this hospital has a problem with the level of care that I provided for President Davidson, don't you think you should be talking to me?
Later, Dorian and Michael are standing in the hall near the elevators. Dorian: Oh, Dr. McBain, that was really brave of you, standing up to the Chief of Staff like that. Michael: Well, unfortunately, I think that – The elevator doors open and Marcie walks out and straight to Michael. She puts her head on his chest. Michael: Hi. Ok, I'm going to guess that your computer is still down. Marcie: My book is gone. I've lost all my chemistry notes. Why is everything falling apart? Michael: No, no, no, everything isn't falling apart, ok? You'll write it again. The second version will be better than the first. Marcie: No. Michael: Yes, it will. Marcie: No, no, you don't understand. My chemistry notes -- they're not in the textbook, and if I don't know all of this stuff by next week for my makeup test, I'm going to fail. I cannot fail. I've never failed anything in my life, and I just got a warning letter from the school. If I don't get my grades up, I'm going to lose my scholarship! Michael: Well, why didn't you tell me this? Marcie: I don't know; I've never failed anything before. Michael: You're not going to fail this test. Marcie: You don't know that. Michael: First, we'll deal with your computer, and then I'll help you study I happen to know a thing or two about chemistry. Marcie: Oh, right, right. You think you're going to be able to teach me all of that stuff in just a week? Michael: Yes, I do. But, first, we got to get your mind off these classes for a little while. You're going a little nuts. Marcie: Yeah? Think you can help me with that? Michael: Yeah. Did you have anything particular in mind? Marcie: I don't know. That depends if the electricity's on yet. Michael: What? Marcie: Listen, I got to go visit a friend from St. James. I'll be right back, ok? Michael: Ok. Marcie: Bye. Marcie walks off.
Michael & Marcie are back in his room. He is sitting at his desk working on the computer. Marcie is standing behind him and looking over his shoulder anxiously. Marcie: Please, please don't tell me that the hard drive is gone for good. Michael: I don't think so. Marcie: So you think you can get it all back? Michael: I hope so. It would help if Nigel and Roxanne would stop messing with the fuse box! Marcie: Yeah, but the computer's still on. Michael: Yeah, that's because I switched over to battery power. Marcie: Oh. Michael: Ok. Marcie: Oh, no, I can't look, I can't look! Michael: Yes, you can -- Marcie: Oh. Michael: Because I just got your chemistry notes back! Marcie: Get out of here! Michael: Yes! Marcie: Michael, thank you! Michael: Don't thank me until I get your book back. Marcie: Oh, no, you think you can do that, too? Michael: I hope so. Uh -- "The Killing Club," by Marcie Walsh, chapter one! Marcie: That's it! Scroll down to the end. I want to see if it's all there. Michael: Scroll down to the end. Marcie: That's it! That's it! That's the last line that I wrote! You did it! You're a genius! Michael: No, I'm not. But I'll take the compliment seeing as you're so happy. I didn't know this book meant this much to you. Marcie: I didn't, either, until it was gone. I guess it's the only thing that's making me feel good about myself. You know, my grades aren't exactly giving me a boost of self-confidence lately. Michael: Yeah, well, honey, you know that's temporary, right? Marcie: Yeah. I never would've started writing it if you didn't encourage me. Michael: You know, this crash was almost a good thing. I haven't seen you this happy in a long time. Marcie: Yeah, it really wasn’t. Michael: I said "almost." Listen, I'm going to get you a new battery setup so the next time the power kicks off, your battery kicks in. Marcie: I think that's a good idea, and I'll back up those files. Michael: Yeah, that is a good idea. Marcie: I think I got to go do it now. I got to do it now! Michael: Ok, go ahead, do it now. Marcie: Ok. Michael. Michael: Hmm? Marcie: Stop. Cut it out. I'm trying to back it up.
Later, Marcie & Michael are kissing on the bed. Michael: Are you sure you're ready for this? Marcie: I want to be. A fire alarm goes off in the hall. Marcie jumps up. Marcie: What's that? Michael: Uh, fire alarm? Marcie: Well, we'd better get out of here then. Michael: How much you want to bet it's a false alarm? Marcie: Well, I don't want to bet. I think we should get out of here. Michael: Oh, all right! Michael and Marcie open the door and find Nigel and Roxy in the hall. Michael: Is everything ok? Nigel: Oh, terribly sorry, Dr. McBain. Michael: Michael. When I'm not at work, it's Michael. Nigel: Oh, yes -- Michael. I apologize for any inconvenience. Marcie: So there's no fire? Nigel: Well, we were working on the electrical system and inadvertently sounded the alarm. Just -- mm-hmm. Roxy: The only fire going on is what's going on between the two of you. Marcie smiles shyly.
Michael and Marcie go back into his room. Michael: You want to pick up where we left off? Marcie: Um, I -- hmm. Michael: What's wrong? Marcie: I'm sorry. Michael: Don't be. You're not ready. Marcie: I thought I was, but I -- I can't do this. And I don't want to push you away, it's just that -- Michael: You're not pushing me away. It's ok, don't be sorry. Marcie: I really want to do this, I really do, but I don't know how to explain this. It's kind of like Al's here. And it just -- it doesn't feel right. Michael: You're not going to feel like that forever. I can wait. Marcie: Thank you.
