Episode 7

A Sneaking Suspicion
April 2 &  6, 2004

Friday, April 2

Setup: Marcie is at the Police Station sitting at her desk.  Jessica and Nora come in. She gets up and rushes over to them.

Marcie: I'm researching my novel, and I want to ask -- well, I wanted to ask both of you what's it's like to be romantically involved with a cop.

Jessica: Well -- we're proud of them. I guess you get a little scared sometimes and they're always on the job, really.

Marcie: So is that why you and the Commissioner split up, Mrs. Buchanan?

Nora: Excuse me.

Marcie: Well -- oh, I'm sorry. I really didn't mean to get personal. I just didn't think it was a big issue. I mean, you two, you're still friends, right?

Later, Marcie is at her desk again talking on the phone.  Nora walks over.

Marcie: (talking to someone on the phone) No, the Commissioner wanted me to thank you personally for helping the department on the Stephen Haver case. Yeah. Oh, hey, listen, while I have you on the phone, would you mind if I ask you one little question? Well, I was wondering how you handled the stress of a murder case on a personal level.

Nora: Marcie.

Marcie: What? Oh, sorry. Never mind, got to go. Bye. What? What? Is something wrong?

Nora: (grabs Marcie’s arm and pulls her up) Ok, we need to have a talk privately, now.

Marcie: Oh -- ok.

In the hallway, Nora is studying Marcie.

Marcie: I just finished the first chapter of my novel, but I really don't still feel like I’m on the inside of the characters' motivations.

Nora: Marcie?

Marcie: Yes.

Nora: I don't think D.A. Colson or Commissioner Buchanan would be happy to know that you're writing your novel while on the job, let alone prying into people's personal lives.

Marcie: Well, I didn't mean to pry into your relationship with the Commissioner. I'm really sorry about that.

Nora: Look, I don't know what you've heard --

Marcie: Nothing, nothing. I have heard nothing. I just assumed you two broke up because you're total workaholics.

Nora: Marcie –

Bo walks up.

Bo: Hey.

Nora: Hi.

Bo: Well, are you ready to start practicing for that dance contest?

Marcie: Oh, are you two entering a dance contest?

Nora: Matthew -- Matthew entered us.

Marcie: Uh-huh.

Nora: You know, I was -- you know, I've been doing some thinking. Do you realize the amount of work that's going to pile up in the three days that we're gone?

Bo: I know. I've been thinking the same thing, and I can't miss that much work.

Marcie is at her desk, obviously asleep.  She is dreaming.

Marcie's voice: "The tough-talking cowboy cop and the smart, witty Assistant D.A. were falling in love, but neither was willing to admit it."

In the common room of the police station there is a huge banner strung across the room (Congratulations, Commissioner) and stacks of books around.  Little Gabrielle is standing to the side with a police officer.

Officer: Hey, Gabrielle, you must be very proud of your mom, huh?

Little Gabrielle: Yes, I am. She's the best mom, best cop, and best author ever.

Reporter: Here she comes.

Marcie struts into the room.

Reporter:  Commissioner Walsh, a statement for our readers, please.

Second reporter: A few words for the press.

Little Gabrielle rushes to her and hugs her around the waist.

Marcie: Oh, well -- hello. I love you, Gabrielle!

Reporter: How does it feel to win the Pulitzer for your novel?

Marcie: Oh, well --

Reporter: And to solve the East Coast's biggest crime wave?

Marcie: Well, it's all fabulous. Really, but I'm afraid I cannot stay. There's a private jet waiting to take my daughter Gabrielle and I to Sweden, where my husband, Michael, will be receiving the Nobel Prize in medicine. It just goes to show you that work doesn't have to get in the way. You make time for what matters.

Marcie walks briskly away with Little Gabrielle in tow.

Marcie:  Let's go, Gabrielle, doll. We have to motor. Let's go. Come on.

Reporter: Thank you –

Marcie swings into the hall.  The reporters follow close behind and position themselves to take photographs.

Marcie: Oh, excuse me, I don't have time. I do not have time for this. (rushes to the photographer and puts her hand close to the lens) Would you please leave us alone? We're very busy. Excuse me, would you please leave us alone!

Nora wakes Marcie up.  She grabs for the phone.

Marcie: Llanview Police Department. How may I direct your call?

Nora: Marcie?

Marcie: Oh, oh, sorry. So I guess I must have fallen asleep.

Nora: I guess.

Tuesday, April 6

Setup: John is at Rodi’s and so are Natalie, Jessica and Antonio.  Everyone notes that John does not look good.  John is feeling bad but doesn’t admit it.  He leaves, going out the back door.  He drops his bottle of pills on the floor near the table where he was sitting with Jessica and Antonio. Jessica finds them and first gives them to Natalie but Antonio takes them and has a sudden insight—suppose one of Haver’s last acts was to poison John’s medication!  Antonio calls his suspicions into the police department. In the meanwhile, Natalie finds John collapsed in the alley behind Rodi’s.  He is rushed to the hospital and survives.

The next day in John’s hospital room:

Natalie: So how you feeling?

John: Better than before. I wanted to say -- I wanted to say thank you.

Natalie: Yeah, well, now we're even. Neither one of us owes the other one.

In the hall outside of John’s hospital room, Michael is talking on his cell phone.

Michael: Anyway, we got John through it. He's doing a lot better now.

Marcie: What about you? You sound tired.

Michael: Yeah. Well, I'll take a quick nap. I'll be fine. I'll talk to you later?

Marcie: Bye. Hmm.

Natalie: Hey. I'll let you spend some time with your brother.

Natalie leaves the room and runs into Bo in the hallway.

Bo: How's he doing?

Natalie: He's pretty wiped out.

Bo: You must be, too. You've been with him all night.

Natalie: Couldn't just leave him.

Bo: Well, not after you saved his life.

Natalie: Yeah, well, I owed him one. But I -- I don't think he needs me anymore, so I'll see you later.

Meanwhile, in John’s hospital room, Michael and John talk.

Michael: Haver must have gotten a hold of some of your medication and switched a couple of the pills.

John: Whatever it was, it hit me like a tank.

Michael: Yeah. Crazy. I mean, this guy was trying to poison you, you know? Can you imagine that he went to his grave thinking you'd be following him any day?

John: Nearly did.

Michael: Yeah, if it wasn't for Natalie.

John: Yeah, Natalie.

Michael: So how bad's this pain from the old gunshot wound?

John: Five years, two months, eight days.

Michael: Come again?

John: Since I was shot, since Caitlin and I were shot.

Michael: Yeah. I know it's been a while. I checked up on your prescription. You don't get it filled regularly, which means that you're not taking as much as you should. You want to be in pain?

John: Keeps me sharp. Lets me focus on what I need to do.

Michael: And you did it. You took down Caitlin's killer. Stop making yourself suffer.

John: With all due respect, Michael, I don't think you know what you're talking about.

Michael: I might know a little more than you think, bro. Marcie lost her boyfriend. She was withdrawn and depressed, and the last thing on her mind was going out with any other person.

John: I don't think it's the same thing.

Michael: How's it so different? I mean, she's happy. It doesn't change the way she felt about Al Holden. She still loves him. She loves somebody else, too, and that's ok.

At the hospital, Eve steps off the elevator and sees Bo.  She rushes to him.

Eve: Oh, Bo.

Bo: Hi.

Eve: How's John?

Bo: Oh, he's going to be all right.

Eve: Oh, thank god. I just heard about him. I -- I got -- if anything had happened to him -- I'm sorry.

Bo: It didn't, it didn't.

Eve: Oh, Bo.

Bo: We got lucky. It's ok.

Dr. Long: Everything all right, Commissioner?

Bo: Yes, yes, doctor. How are you? This is Dr. Long. He's the Chief-of- Staff.

Eve: Hello. I'm John McBain's mother. Thank you so much for everything you've done for him.

Dr. Long: Well, we're just glad when we can help one of Llanview's finest.

Eve: Thank you.

Dr. Long: Let me know if there's anything else we can do.

Eve: Thank you.

Michael: Mom.

Eve: Oh, God, he's really all right?

Michael: Oh, yes.

Eve: Ok.

Michael: He's going to be just fine. He's going to need a couple days' bed rest and maybe somebody to look out for him, but he's going to be ok.

Eve: Ok.

Bo: I'm going to let everybody at the department know, ok?

Eve: Thank you for being here.

Bo: Look, I've been through this before.

Eve goes into John’s room.

Eve: Hey, you.

John: Hey.

Eve: I'm so glad you're all right.

Out in the corridor, Michael sees Dr. Long looking at one of the medical charts.

Michael: Hey, Dr. Long, listen, I wanted to ask about a patient I saw yesterday -- Bailey?

Dr. Long: Mm-hmm?

Michael: I wanted to follow-up, but I found out that he had been transferred.

Dr. Long: The patient's family wanted him moved closer to their home.

Michael: Oh. Well, I had never actually seen a case of alopecia areata, so I was wondering, if it would be possible, I'd love to look at your case file?

Dr. Long: This is a hospital, not a library. Patients' files are not to be borrowed for your personal entertainment.

Michael seems genuinely surprised by Long’s reaction but just then Paul careens off the elevator and sees Dr. Long.  He rushes up to him.

Paul: Dr. Long, we need to talk.

Dr. Long: Never come up and speak to me. (glances around and then hisses)  In my office.

Later, Michael is in his room with the lights out laying on his bed.  Marcie comes in and lights a candle.

Michael: What are you doing here? I thought you were working.

Marcie walks over to the bed.  Michael sits up and she sits next to him.

Marcie: I took some personal time.

Michael: For me?

Marcie: Yeah. You know, I thought you could use some company, and I think you need to laugh. You know everything's fine with your brother, John, now, so I went and I checked out a DVD from the library.

Michael: (looks at the case) Oh. It's a comedy.

Marcie: Or maybe I should've got a Western. You like those, don't you?

Michael: I was thinking more along the lines of a Romance.

During a musical montage, Michael and Marcie are shown cuddling on the bed, eating popcorn and watching the movie.

At Rodi’s the next day, Marcie & Michael are sitting at a table.  Marcie is studying a letter.

Marcie: Oh, man! Talk about bad news. They're assigning me a roommate next week.

Michael: What a bummer.

Marcie: And plus it's going to make it harder to study, and you're just not going to be able to drop by whenever you want.

Michael: Yeah, well, I don't like the sound of that. I got to go, all right?

Marcie: Ok.

Michael gets up.  Jen walks into view.

Michael: I'll see you later.

Marcie: Bye.

Michael: Hi, Jen.

Jen: Hey.

Michael: Bye, Jen.

Jen: Hey, Marcie.

Marcie: Hey.

Jen: You seen Riley?

Marcie: Not since this morning.

Jen: Are you ok?

Marcie: Eh, yeah. Nothing I can do anything about. They're assigning me a new roommate next week.

Jen: Uh-oh.

Jen sits at the table.

Marcie: Yeah. Well, you know me, I need a place to be by myself. You know, I'm a total slob.

Jen: You are not.

Marcie: Yes, I am. Plus I need a place that I can study, you know?

Jen: Sure. Actually -- well, no, I don't.

Marcie: Listen, about the other day in the police station -- I'm really sorry about that. I should've asked you first. I jumped to a conclusion.

Jen: It's ok.

Marcie: Ok.

Jen: Look, I know you moved out because of the whole Michael thing, and I was a total idiot.

Marcie: No, no. Listen, we talked about that. Forget about it.

Jen: Yeah, well --

Marcie: What?

Jen: I was thinking maybe you'd want to move back in.

Marcie: Oh --

Jen: You'd have plenty of space, and, trust me, I'm so over all that other stuff --

Marcie: Jen, that's really nice, but --

Jen: But you'd rather not?

Marcie: No.

Jen: I totally understand.

Marcie: No, no, no, no! Jen, I would love to move back in.

Later, Marcie and Michael are standing in the hallway at the hospital.

Michael: I'm really glad you're moving back into Jen's house. I think it's a great idea.

Marcie: Yeah, well, at least we'll have someplace to be together, if we ever get the time.

Michael: Yeah.

Dr. Long appears and a nurse calls out to him.

Nurse: Dr. Long, you have a call on two. He says it's important.

Dr. Long: (takes the call) This is Dr. Long. I'll have to call you back on my private line.

Michael watches Long’s every move with obvious suspicion.  Long hangs up the phone.

Marcie: What's going on? Something wrong?

Michael: I don't know. I think there's something going on with our Chief-of-Staff and Paul Cramer.

Michael and Marcie emerge from around the corner and watch Dr. Long walk away. Marcie holds onto Michael’s arm as they both stay focused on Dr. Long with narrowed eyes.
