MARCAL SCENES ACT II
Page 73
AUGUST 2007
Thursday, August 2, 2007 Adriana answers the door at Rex’s apartment. Michael is standing there.. Adriana: Michael. Michael: Good, you're here, too. Adriana: Come in. Rex: What's up, Michael? Michael: You know as well as I do -- Todd’s back. I just need to know if the three of us are still on the same page, you know, as far as my son's concerned. Adriana: Does Marcie suspect anything? Michael: She keeps asking me if something's wrong. I mean, she knows I'm a wreck. Rex: Ok, does she have any idea it's about Tommy and Todd? Michael: I -- I don't think so. I mean, if she'd put it together, she'd say something to me. Adriana: Look, Todd went through hell trying to find his son and he still didn't come up with anything. Rex: Look, Spencer Truman must've really covered his tracks when he got Tommy adopted. Adriana: And no one's going to hear a word from us. Rex: We're not making you feel any better, are we? Michael: Things have changed. Rex: What things? Michael: Marcie. She told me that she -- um -- she can't have kids. Adriana: Oh, Michael, I'm so sorry. Poor Marcie -- I know she wanted to have a big family. Michael: Mm-hmm. If Todd finds out who Tommy really is, they'll take him away from us. We'll never have another child. Adriana: How's Marcie taking it? Michael: She feels pretty badly for herself -- and for me. I mean, I keep telling her that it doesn't matter, you know, and she keeps on telling me "thank god, at least we have Tommy." If Todd finds out who Tommy is, I don't know what it's going to do to her. Rex: All right, do you think Todd’s any closer to finding out the truth? Michael: Well, when he was brought into the hospital, he said he tracked his kid to what turned out to be an abandoned apartment. Rex: Right. Michael: But there was no kid there, just a tape of a crying baby -- it was a trap. Rex: The kid on the tape could be any baby. Michael: Yeah, "or" somebody else could know our little secret. Rex: Who? Truman's dead, the lawyer who handled the arrangements are dead, and so are Tommy’s first adoptive parents. Michael: You're forgetting about the man that sent Todd to Chicago -- Miles Laurence.
***
At the courthouse, the judge has decided to remand Miles Laurence over for trial after he pleads not guilty. She sets the bail at half a million dollars. Nora is disappointed that the judge agreed to allow bail. She approaches John, who is standing midway the courtroom with his hands with his hips.
Nora: I'm sorry. I -- I did my best, and that judge is a softly. John: Yeah, I know. Well, I'm going to put someone on Laurence, make sure he doesn't skip town. Nora: Good, I was hoping you would. I spoke to Marty. John: Yeah, I -- uh -- I heard Cole’s going to be staying with you. Nora: Mm-hmm. John: That's good. Nora: It is good. John: He's a good kid. Nora: John? John: Hmm? Nora: Do you think there's a chance that she didn't kill Spencer? John: Yeah. Yeah, I do. You know, when I got these two cases -- Nora: I know --Miles and Marty. John: Right -- and somehow they're connected. I just can't -- Nora: What? John? What? John: I'm -- I'm going to call you. I'll -- I'll call you. Nora: Well, if you find something, you better call me. John?

In the meanwhile, Michael, Adriana and Rex continue their conversation. Adriana: Look, Michael, when Rex and I decided to keep this secret, we knew it wasn't going to be easy. Rex: And we're not going to change our minds now. Michael: Todd might come to you. He might ask you to investigate. Rex: I -- I doubt it. He thought I came up empty before. Michael: If he does? Rex: I'll think of something. Michael: Thanks. I can't believe that I'm actually praying for a man to spend the rest of his life thinking his little boy is gone forever. Even worse than that, I can't believe I'm going to have to run into him over and over again and not tell him the truth. Rex: This situation sucks. Michael: Whew -- in spades. Adriana: And what Marcie just found out makes it worse. Rex: But you didn't -- you didn't ask for any of this. Michael, you took Tommy in because you believed his parents were dead. Michael: And then I learned differently. I made a choice, Rex. I chose between Marcie and my happiness -- and Todd’s, and I'm going to have to live with that for the rest of my life.
Adriana leaves. Rex: Ok, you need to try and feel better about this, Michael. Michael: Yeah. It'd be nice if that was possible. Rex: Adriana and I are on your side. And things will die down, just like they did before. Todd bought that phony death certificate I gave him, he believed his son was dead. And now after this whole Chicago thing, he's got to be even more convinced. Michael: If we were talking about a normal person, I'd say yeah, but we're not. We're talking about Todd Manning. Michael’s phone rings. He checks the incoming call. Michael: It's my bro, I got to take this. Yeah, Johnny, what's up? John: I need to speak to you right away. Michael: I'm a little busy right now. John: This is serious, Mike. I don't want to do this over the phone. Be at my office in one hour. Michael: Well, could you at least tell me what it's about? John: Just be there, Mike. Michael: Fine, I'm on my way. He wants to talk to me, says it's important. Michael disconnects the call then looks around with a worried expression on his face. Rex: Hey, don't worry about it. He doesn't know anything. Michael: Yeah, I wish I had that for confidence. Thank you, man, for everything you've done. Rex: I'll keep this secret forever, for Tommy. ***
Friday, August 3, 2007 Marcie runs into Lindsay at the diner. Lindsay has Tommy with her. Marcie: Hey, my little man. What are you doing up so late, huh? Lindsay: I brought him out for ice cream because every time I put him in the crib he started crying. Marcie: Oh. Did you do that on purpose? Lindsay: I don’t think he wants to go down until Mommy puts him down. Marcie: Come here, my little sweetheart. Oh, is it true, hmm? Is that true? You know, I don’t know what I'd do without you. I don’t. You're the only baby Mommy’s ever going to have. Lindsay: Marcie, have you given up on more kids because you can’t have one of your own?

Michael meets John at his office in the police station. John: Come on in. Hey. Michael: Hey. Listen, Johnny, Marcie’s in a meeting, Lindsay’s watching Tommy and I'm pretty sure she wants to go home. John: Let’s get it done. Sit down. Michael: What’s so important, John? John: Well, I have some questions for you -- about Truman’s murder. Michael: Didn’t we already do that? John: We're doing it again. Michael: Why? John: Look, I threw you and Balsom in a cell because I knew there was something you weren’t telling me. It’s connected to the murder, isn’t it? Michael: I already told you everything I remember about that night. John: Mike, no one’s going home until you tell me what you're holding back. Michael: Look, John, I don’t know what you're getting at here, ok? Rex and I aren’t keeping any secrets. And as far as Spencer Truman’s murder is concerned, I was pretty sure that was over. Didn’t Marty Saybrooke already confess? John: She’s in custody, but there’s a lot of questions. Michael: Oh. And you don’t believe she did it? What do you want me to tell you, John? John: How about the truth? Michael: About what? John: Mike, you and Balsom both know something, and it’s big. Michael: Rex and I suspected each other of being Spencer Truman’s killer, John. That’s all there is between us. John: Cut the crap, Mike. Michael: Listen, there is no big secret. You can ask Rex, he'll tell you the same thing. Johnny, I understand you want to clear Marty, but I can’t help you.

At the diner, Marcie and Lindsay continue their talk. Lindsay: Marcie? Marcie: I just don’t want to talk about it, ok? Lindsay: Have you told Michael? Marcie: Yes, I have, and it was absolutely awful. Lindsay: So why are you saying that there aren’t going to be any more children? Marcie: I don’t know. I'm just -- it feels that way to me. You know, Michael wants to talk to the doctors and look at all the records, but it’s pointless. Lindsay: So he hasn’t fully accepted it? Marcie: No. He’s having a hard time, and to be honest, I really don’t know how to handle it. Lindsay: Well, when you think about it, you've known about this and you've had time to process it, and for him, it’s new news. You know, he -- he hasn’t had the time. So, is there -- is there something else that’s wrong? Marcie: Remember I was telling you that every time I talk about Tommy or I bring up how lucky we are to have him, you know, Mike gets really weird. Well, it’s happening now it’s just getting worse. Lindsay: I think I know the reason why.

At the police station, John continues to try to intimidate Michael. John: Mike, this is the -- the log kept by Truman’s guards at the hospital. Michael: Yeah? What’s your point? John: Well, according to this, you saw Truman on the day he was supposed to be transferred. Michael: I was the resident on duty. John: It says here you were in the room for 45 minutes. Michael: Yeah. John: Why? Michael: I was doing my job? John: Ok. Well, immediately after, you signed out of work. Michael: You've been a very busy boy, haven’t you, John? John: Where'd you go, Mike? Michael: I don’t remember. John: Did you see Balsom? Michael: Why are you doing this? John: You know why, Mike. Tell me what’s going on before you're in too deep. Michael: What are you going to do, John, hmm? You going to shine a light in my eyes, huh? You going to -- you going to sweat me until I break, huh? No, I got a better idea -- maybe you can arrest me and throw me in a cell like you did last time. John looks aggrieved then sighs. John: You can make this easier, Mike. Michael: How do you figure? John: Hey, look, you went and saw Truman. Right afterwards, you go see Rex, and right after that, Balsom’s found over Truman’s dead body holding the bloody scissors in his hand. Michael: Yeah. And you know that Rex didn’t kill Truman. John: Why are you so anxious to protect him? Michael: Oh -- "protect him"? Look, I -- I barely even know the guy. John: He’s Tommy’s godfather. Michael: Well, we all thought you were dead. And he does happen to be one of Marcie’s best friends. John: None of this explains why you were in same area the night Truman killed. Michael: Well, there you go again -- trying to make something out of nothing. John: It’s not "nothing." Tell me what’s going on, Mike, or you'll end up in the slammer.

At the diner, Lindsay seems worried about Marcie. Marcie: Is there something you're not telling me? Lindsay: No. It’s just that I know other adoptive parents, and it seems like the thing that they're afraid of the most is that the adoption is going to be contested, and then the child they love so much is going to be taken away from them. Marcie: No, no. Not us. Not anymore, anyway. I know that we went through that in the beginning. But we've had Tommy for over a year now, and nothing has happened. Lindsay: Well, maybe Michael just doesn’t trust that yet, and that’s why he’s pushing you to have your own children. Marcie: No. No, you know what I think it is? I think it’s that whole male thing. You know what I'm talking about? How they get that urge to, like, carry on the whole family gene pool? I think that’s what it is. No, I -- I don’t know, to be honest. I -- it’s not that Michael doesn’t love Tommy any less than -- or any more than he would our own kid. It’s just different, you know? It just is. Lindsay: You know, in time, he'll get past this. Marcie: I hope you're right. Lindsay: I know so. Because I know he loves you and Tommy more than anything in the world. And look, he just found out that he’s not going to be able to have a biological child, ok? That’s probably something that he takes for granted, like most people do. So just give him time to mourn that loss, and before you know it, you'll be adopting enough kids to start a baseball team. Trust me, I know these things. Marcie: I trust you. I do.

At the police station, John continues to badger Michael. Michael: Rex and I don’t know anything more about Spencer Truman’s murder. That’s the truth. You want me to take a lie detector test? Would you like me to swear on a stack of bibles? Bring it on. But I have better things to do with my time. John glares at him. Michael: Yeah. You? John: No. I'm giving you one last chance, Mike. Is there anything you want to tell me? Michael: No! John: I don’t believe you. [Michael sighs] Michael: John, why? Why can’t you just let this go? John: Well, for one thing, Mike, Marty Saybrooke got pressured into confessing to a crime she didn’t do. Michael: She thinks she did it. John: She’s wrong. Michael: Or maybe you just can’t accept it. John: She didn’t do it, Mike. She’s not a killer. And she’s a got kid, all right? Think about that. She could spend the rest of her life in prison. So if there’s something you know, please help me, man. Michael’s phone rings and he checks the incoming call. Michael: Oh. It’s Marcie. I have to take this, or she’s going to worry. John: Go right ahead. Michael: Hey, sweetie. Marcie: Fine. So where are you? Michael: I -- I stopped by John’s office. We're -- shooting the breeze. Marcie: Well, Tommy and I are at the diner. Have you eaten? Michael: No. Marcie: Well, the special’s chicken pot pie. Michael: Be right there, ok? As soon as I can. She wants me to meet her. John: Yeah, I don’t think we're done here yet, Mike. Michael: Listen to me, John, because this is the God’s honest truth. Now, you can ask me the same thing 10,000 times and I will say the exact same thing I'm saying to you right now -- I don’t know any more about Spencer Truman’s murder than I have already told you. I don’t know anything about what Marty Saybrooke did that night. She’s a nice woman, John. And if I could help her, I swear to you, I would. But I can’t. I got nothing for you. I'm leaving. You want to stop me, you're going to have to arrest me again. John: (opens the door and holds it) Get out of here.

In the meanwhile, Rex is at Rodi’s with Bo, Antonio and Vincent. They’ve been trying not to talk about women and what women want. At the police station, Michael steps out of John’s office and into the hallway and then hurriedly dials a number on his cell phone. Rex’s phone rings, he checks the name and then answers it. Rex: Michael? What happened with John? Michael: Hauled me into the station, because he thinks that you and I are keeping some secret. Rex: Did you tell him anything? Michael: No. No, I didn’t tell him anything, but he knows that something is going on. He knows. Now, listen, you better be prepared, because he’s going to come and get you, too. Rex: Why? I thought Mar-- Marty Saybrooke confessed. Michael: No. No, no. I mean, he doesn’t think that she did it. Rex: Look, he’s your brother. May-- maybe you should -- you should come clean. I know this sounds radical, but what if you told him that Tommy is Todd’s son? Michael: No. No, no, no, no, I -- I can’t risk that, and you -- you can’t say anything. I could lose my son. Rex: I told you, I'm in this for the duration. Ok? You want to change strategy, that’s your decision, not mine. You got to take it easy, man, ok? Everything’s going to be all right.

At the diner, Michael rushes over to the booth where Marcie and Tommy are sitting. Michael: I'm sorry, sweetie. Marcie: That’s ok. Michael: How is my little guy? Marcie hands Tommy to Michael and laughs at happy they seem to be to see each other. Michael slides into the other side of the booth with Tommy in his arms. Michael (to Tommy): How is-- Marcie: Oh, be careful with the grapes. Michael: Oh, I know, I know. Michael drops his phone. Marcie: Oh. Michael: I'll get the phone later. Thank you. Thank you so much, my little guy, for waiting up for your daddy. Marcie: So, how’s John doing? Michael: What? Marcie: How’s John? Michael: Yeah. He’s fine. Marcie: You know, you should've asked him to come join us. That would have been nice. Michael: You know what? I kind of just wanted it to be the three of us, you know? You have no idea -- hmm! -- How much I missed you. Marcie: You act like you've never seen him. Michael: He’s changing, Marcie, you know? And he is changing so fast that -- you know, I don’t want to miss a second of it. You know? I mean, we could turn around one day, and our little boy could be gone. ***
