Character Descriptions
…is the new chief of surgery at Seattle Grace Hospital. He did his surgical residency at the hospital thirty years ago and was a colleague of the exalted Ellis Grey. Previously practicing in New York City, he was persuaded to leave that city and return to Seattle when he was offered the opportunity to be chief of surgery. He has been married to Adele Webber for over thirty years. News articles indicate that he was second choice for the position and was only offered it after the exalted Ellis Grey declined the position for what were at the time unspecified reasons. Gossip: Since his appointment it has been discovered that Ellis Grey is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and is in fact now institutionalized. Her condition until recently was unknown outside of her immediate family. The grapevine indicates that Webber and Grey were more than friends during their residency, although it appears that once Webber left SGH their ties were severed. A number of people have reported that Webber seemed truly devastated when he recently learned of Grey’s condition and demanded special care for her during her recent hospital stay. ~~Tessarae
… is the head of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He is highly regarded in his field and has been honored with the Golden Glove award for excellence in surgery. He is a dedicated doctor who many people believe already has his eye on the Chief of Surgery position. Indeed, he was appointed Acting Chief of Surgery during Richard Webber’s recent and luckily brief period of disability. Burke’s appointment served as a bone of contention between he and Neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd. Burke is not married, but he has family in Alabama, in particular his mother who owns a restaurant. Gossip: The grapevine indicates that Burke is romantically involved with a first year surgical resident, Cristina Yang. More than a few people were surprised when this relationship came to light since up until that point neither Burke nor Yang appeared to have much interest in anyone or anything other than “cutting.” People have noticed some subtle changes in Burke’s usual gruff and no nonsense manner--the most telling of which is that he has begun to wear a floral surgical cap. ~~Tessarae
…is the head of the Neurosurgery Department. He was a colleague of Richard Webber’s, Chief of Surgery, in New York. Shepherd followed Webber to Seattle and became part of the Seattle Grace family. He is a highly respected and skilled surgeon. He is married to Addison Montgomery Shepherd, a fact that until recently was not common knowledge. Gossip: The grapevine has been absolutely abuzz with talk about Shepherd and his wife and his mistress, Meredith Grey. Although the details are vague, it seems that Shepherd’s wife cheated on him (with his BEST friend!) and when Shepherd found out he packed his bags in the middle of the night and ran to Seattle and moved into a trailer. Webber was more than happy to welcome him to the staff of SGH. Shepherd has since reunited with his wife—sort of. Shepherd has been heard saying that he feels obligated to stay in his marriage because he took vows, but no one, especially Derek Shepherd, seems to know where his heart truly lies. ~~Tessarae
…is head of the new Neonatal Surgery. A colleague and former student of Richard Webber, Chief of Surgery, in New York, she has recently signed a contract with Seattle Grace. Given her reputation, Webber actively recruited her to join the staff at SGH. Webber has been quoted as stating that with Addison Shepherd heading the new neonatal department it will quickly become the best facility west of New York City and he is willing to put his money where his mouth is to make that happen. Gossip: Addison Shepherd is married to Derek Shepherd but it is now common knowledge that their marriage was and still may be in trouble. Although the Shepherds have reunited, the word at the nurse’s station is that they are not living together and Derek Shepherd is frequently seen mooning over his ex-mistress, Meredith Grey, who in turn seems to have eyes only for him. General consensus at gossip central is that Addison Shepherd has fought hard to save her marriage—a marriage that she almost destroyed with an ill-advised affair—but no one is taking bets on how long she is going to be willing to be the only one really trying. ~~Tessarae
…is the senior surgical resident and in charge of the first year residents. She has a stellar reputation and is such a hard and exacting taskmaster that she is called “the Nazi” both behind her back and to her face. Recently Seattle Grace offered her an impressive fellowship and, although she was offered fellowships at four other hospitals, she seems to be staying put at Seattle Grace. She has been married for ten years and is expecting her first child. Gossip: Bailey is noted for not suffering fools lightly and she has been known to put even attendings in their place if they deign to disrespect or underestimate her. No one can really verify it but the word at the nurse’s station is that she even called the Chief a moron once. That reckless move though was attributed not to business as usual but to her recently pregnancy induced raging hormones. She is a fierce patient advocate and her best-kept secret is that her heart breaks whenever she fails to save a patient, even when the prognosis is grime from the beginning. ~~Tessarae
…is a first year surgical resident (an intern) at Seattle Grace. She had an impressive academic record coming out of medical school, which surprised no one since she is the daughter of the exalted Ellis Grey, super surgeon. Gossip: It is now common knowledge that Ellis Grey is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and it seems that Meredith struggled with her mother’s condition alone for quite some time, which isolated her to some degree. Meredith is now close friends with fellow intern Cristina Yang. Meredith had a torrid affair with Derek Shepherd that only ended when his wife came to Seattle. Word in the corridors of the hospital is that Meredith was devastated when she found out Shepherd was married and lied to her about it. And she seemed even more devastated when instead of signing divorce papers Shepherd chose to try to work things out with his wife. Recently, it has been reported that she is optimistic about moving on but no one is taking bets on the likelihood of that happening. ~~Tessarae
…is a first year surgical resident (an intern) at Seattle Grace. Karev has a reputation for being brash and arrogant but generally is viewed as talented. Bailey noted that he is probably perfect for plastic. He can be devastatingly charming when he thinks it’s to his advantage, but he often dismisses patients and his fellow interns as unimportant and has been known to go out of his way to antagonize them. Gossip: Lots of people think that Karev’s social and emotional development have lagged far behind his intellectual development. For example, recently it was obvious that he had romantic feelings for fellow intern Izzie Stevens, but his response to those feelings was to plaster half-naked pictures of her all over the hospital. On the other hand, Karev seems to have little qualms or difficulties juggling sexual liaisons with a number of different nurses. It is reported that he was a major player in the syphilis outbreak that invaded the hospital. The double-secret secret that no one knows except Webber and Meredith is that Karev failed his Medical Boards. He is frantically preparing to retake the exam, because unless he passes it he is out as an intern at SGH. ~~Tessarae
…is a first year surgical resident (an intern) at Seattle Grace. He has at times shown great promise as a surgeon but like most of the other interns he has at other times fumbled the ball. The general consensus is that George has a great heart and, although he sometimes sees that as a disadvantage, his ability to relate to patients will one day be what elevates him from being a good surgeon to being a great one. Gossip: George is in love with Meredith Grey, who he and Izzie Stevens live with. Everyone seems to know this except Meredith Grey. Nurse Olivia was overheard saying her heart was road kill on the George-Meredith Grey Love Highway and it irritates her that Meredith Grey is not even aware of the road construction project. And no one really believed that there was anything going on between George and Ellis Grey while she was at the hospital, but there were a few raised eyebrows. George also has a dark side. The grapevine was abuzz not long ago when he tried to knock Alex Karev’s block off and it’s been reported that he killed a turkey. ~~Tessarae
…is a first year surgical resident (an intern) at Seattle Grace. She is a bright and ambitious woman who came from a modest background. She is also beautiful, a fact that came in handy during medical school because she was able to model and use the money she earned to pay her way through school. Izzie was able to go into her residency free of debt, so she is not only ambitious and talented but practical as well! Izzie has shown a special interest and promise in pediatrics and as a result Addison Shepherd has selected her to mentor. Gossip: Izzie actually considered turning down Addison Shepherd out of loyalty to Meredith Grey, which had more than a few people scratching their heads. Another thing that has the grapevine buzzing is that Izzie is head over heels in attraction with Alex Karev, although his treatment of her has been less than commendable and some would say downright disrespectful. No one even wants to think about how it might all turn out, except Nurse Olivia has been heard saying she’d give the relationship a snowball’s chance in hell. ~~Tessarae
…is a first year surgical resident (an intern) at Seattle Grace. She hails from California but her temperament seems to be somewhat at odds with that state--she has been quoted as saying there's too much sunshine and furniture upholstery going on there. She is extraordinarily ambitious and competitive and no one disputes that she is one of the best and brightest interns to study at Seattle Grace. It has also been reported that she can be a bit abrupt and callous with patients’ emotions and her competitiveness sometimes overshadows social graces. Gossip: People were shocked to find out that Cristina Yang was involved in a torrid and clandestine affair with Preston Burke! I mean Burke is not known for being a particularly warm and fuzzy guy and Cristina Yang is…well, Cristina. But gossip quickly turned to sympathy when the news of an unplanned and unfortunately short-lived pregnancy became common knowledge. Now that Yang and Burke are openly dating, the gossip has died down a bit but an unnamed source at the nurse’s station did say Burke very recently given Yang a key to his apartment. No one is taking bets on how that’s going to turn out. ~~Tessarae
