Meredith: I can't think of a single reason why I should be a surgeon, but I can think of a thousand reasons why I should quit. They make it hard on purpose... there are lives in our hands. There comes a moment when it's more than just a game, and you either take that step forward or turn around and walk away. I could quit but here's the thing, I love the playing field.
Bailey: Every intern wants to perform their first surgery. That's not your job. Do you know what your job is? To make your resident happy. Do I look happy? No! Why? Because my interns are whiney. You know what will make me look happy? Having the code team staffed, having the trauma pages answered, having the weekend labs delivered and having someone down in the pit doing the sutures. No one holds a scalpel until I'm so happy I'm Mary Freaking Poppins.
Meredith:
We're adults. When did that happen? And how do we make it stop?

Meredith: (after her one-night stand with Derek) I'm going to go upstairs and take a shower. When I came back, you'll be gone right?*
Meredith:
Did you let me scrub in for this operation because I slept with you?
Derek: Yes. (smiles) Just kidding.*
Derek:
It's not the chase.
Meredith: What?
Derek: You and me. It is not the thrill of the chase. It's not a game.
It's? It's your tiny ineffectual fists. And your hair.
Meredith: My hair?
Derek: It smells good. And you're very, very ballsy. It keeps me in line.
Meredith: I'm still not going out with you.
Derek: You say that now.*
Meredith:
[Voice
Over] At some point, you have to make a decision. Boundaries don't keep other people
out. They fence you in. Life is messy. That's how we're made. So, you can waste
your lives drawing lines. Or you can live your life crossing them. But there are
some lines... that are way too dangerous to cross.*
Meredith: [Voice Over] You know how when you were a little kid and you believed in fairy tales, that fantasy of what your life would be, white dress, prince charming who would carry you away to a castle on a hill. You would lie in bed at night and close your eyes and you had complete and utter faith. Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, Prince Charming, they were so close you could taste them, but eventually you grow up, one day you open your eyes and the fairy tale disappears. Most people turn to the things and people they can trust. But the thing is its hard to let go of that fairy tale entirely cause almost everyone has that smallest bit of hope, of faith, that one day they will open their eyes and it will come true.*

Cristina:
(sees Bailey) That's the Nazi?
George: I thought the Nazi would be a man.
Meredith: I thought the Nazi would be... the Nazi.
Izzie: (walks up behind them) Maybe it's professional jealousy.
Maybe she's brilliant and they call her a Nazi because they're jealous. Maybe
she's nice.
Cristina: Let me guess - you're the model.
Izzie glares at Christina then approaches Bailey.
Izzie: Hi, I'm Isobel Stevens, but everyone just calls me Izzie.
Bailey: I have five rules. Memorize them. Rule number one, don't bother
sucking up. I already hate you, that's not gonna change.
At the door of the OR where Christina has been rushed, Bailey meets Meredith.
Bailey: Need something?
Meredith: I’m coming in.
Bailey: No you’re not.
Meredith:
I am. I’m her friend.
Bailey: Exactly. She’s lying on the operating table, naked, exposed.
She’s sedated but she’s probably scared out of her mind. Now right now
she’s not a doctor. She’s not your friend. She’s a patient and she
deserves to have all the privacy I can give her. You’re not going in there.
Meredith: We went jogging this morning. I made her go jogging. There’s
no way that could of?
Bailey: No. It started out this way. Nothing caused it to happen.
Meredith: You have to let me in there.
Bailey: You can try. I’d have to take you down. Hey, I might be short
but you’re pretty tiny. I could do it.
Meredith: Right now. Just in this moment. I hate you.
Bailey: Hmm, yeah well, I can take it.
George: You know Joe?
Bailey: Oh, yeah. I was the only female intern my year. I didn't know
anybody and nobody knew me except Joe. He knew me.
George: Oh. So you and Joe?
Bailey: All you people ever think about is how to get into somebody's
pants. You're nasty. [slaps George] That's
why you got syphilis.*

Meredith:
After all this time, all your warnings about me sleeping with my boss and you're
doing the same exact thing.
Cristina: Oh, it's not the same thing.
Meredith: It's the exact
same!
Cristina: No, it's not. You and McDreamy are in a relationship.
Meredith: And you and Burke are in?
Cristina: Switzerland. It's very neutral there and they make very nice
watches.*
Christina: You're my boyfriend, you're supposed to help
me!
Burke: When we're not on shift, I'm your boyfriend.
Cristina: So when we're not on shift, can I sleep with other people?*

Derek:
You skipping rounds?
Meredith: Avoiding mother.
Derek (reaches out for her): Meredith.
Meredith: You’ve got a wife.
Derek: Yes.
Meredith: You’re life is complicated.
Derek: Yes.
Meredith: I don’t need complicated. I have complicated all on my own.
Derek: Yes.
Meredith: Stop saying yes.
Derek (smiling): Try not to make any sudden movements.
Meredith: You think this is funny.
Derek: Addison’s leaving. She doesn’t have any more patients in this
hospital. There’s no reason for her to be here.
Meredith: No reason?
Derek: (moves close and begins to stroke her cheek) None whatsoever.
Addison comes into view and raises her eyebrow.
Addison: Well isn't this cozy. Can I join in or are you not into
threesomes?
Meredith: I have to go.
Derek frowns and Meredith walks away. He
calls after her but she keeps walking. He
glares at Addison.
Derek: You really are Satan. You realize that right? If Satan were to
take physical form he'd be you, everywhere all the time.
Addison: I am so not Satan.
Derek: How come you haven’t got on your broomstick and gone back to New
York where you belong.
Addison: Stop being petty.
Derek: Stop being an adulteress bitch.
Addison: You know you are going forgive me eventually, right? I mean you
can’t just … I mean there was a time when you thought of me as your best
friend.
Derek: There was a time I thought you were the love of my life. Things
change.
Addison sighs then presses the elevator button.
She reaches into her briefcase and pulls out a set of papers and hands
them to Derek. He looks at the
papers.
Derek: Divorce papers?
Addison: Your lawyer said they’re ok. I haven’t signed them yet. The
ball’s in your court. If you sign, I’ll sign. I’ll sign and be on the
first plane out of here.
Derek: I’ll sign them immediately. I want you out of here as soon as
possible.
Addison glances away then gets on the elevator that has arrived.
She hesitates but then steps out again.
Addison: Derek, have you ever thought that even if I am Satan and an
adulteress bitch that I still might be the love of your life?
Derek stares at her sadly. Addison steps back on the elevator and the doors
close. He keeps staring at the
closed doors for a long time.
Meredith: Okay, here it is, your choice... it's simple, her or me, and I'm sure she is really great. But Derek, I love you, in a really, really big pretend to like your taste in music, let you eat the last piece of cheesecake, hold a radio over my head outside your window, unfortunate way that makes me hate you, love. So pick me, chose me, love me.*
Izzie:
What are you doing?
Meredith: Trying to insert my
banana bag, which sounds vaguely dirty but it isn’t.
Izzie: Let me do that.
Izzie takes the banana bag and begins to insert the needle into Meredith’s
arm.
Meredith: So how’s it going with Addison?
Bad mood, good mood, yay-my-husband-picked-me mood?
Izzie: I think it’s more I-hate-the-smell-of-burning-flesh mood.
Meredith: Before you judge me. I know there was a train accident and people were very badly
hurt. And I’m a vapid narcissist when you mix me with alcohol.
In case you’re wondering, I know that.
Izzie: (studies Meredith for a second) For what it’s worth I take issue
with her salmon colored scrubs. What self-respecting surgeon wears salmon colored scrubs?
Meredith: (nods head and smiles in agreement) This is what I’m saying.
