Moments in MARCAL History
Seeds of an Idea: A search of archive records indicates that the first documented mention of what has come to be known as MARCAL occurred on The Blair Firsters Board on December 22, 2002 as part of a post written by a Tessarae87 and entitled, “Come & Share your WILD Speculations and Off-The-Wall Ideas for OLTL.” The relevant section of that post is posted below:
OFF-THE-WALL Idea: J I know she is annoying as hell and seems to exist just to provide Jen with an a** kisser now that Cris has moved away from telling Jen what a goddess she is on a regular basis but I think Marcie has potential. I like the fact that she is the perfect physical contrast to vapid Jen and couldn’t help thinking that it would be great if she turned out to be the intellectual contrast as well. Suppose Marcie is actually smart but her brain just gets set to off when she is around Jen? Here’s the off-the-wall idea part: I would love to see Al fall for Marcie! Lets say Marcie finally sees the light about Jen and she and Al bond over what idiots they were when it came to her. They share life stories, have an adventure or two and cover each other’s back a time or two then voila tender feelings emerge. And, yeah, I know Marcie is not at all the “pretty chick” type that Al seems to go for but wouldn’t that make the relationship interesting. I mean Jen has the personality and intelligence of a carrot and Al has learned that beauty has its limits. So it could be that as he and Marcie grow closer he finds himself actually attracted to her. The relationship would probably not stand a chance. Max and Gabs both would be opposed. Marcie would be insecure because she would always feel that she didn’t measure up on the goddess meter compared to Jen. Al might have a hard time explaining his attraction to Marcie to his friends. And so on. The relationship would in all probability break under the weight of those issues but for a brief, bittersweet moment two unlikely people would have reached across the space that divides them and connected. And I for one would have been rooting for them all the way. Okay, those are my wild speculations and off-the-wall ideas for today. What are yours? Remember this is all in fun. Tessarae
The Seeds Germinate It wasn't long though before what started out as just an off-the-wall idea began to seem more and more like a real and fun possibility. Following the now well established tradition of creating couple names by combining in some way the names of the two people involved, MARCAL was suggested as the name for what some were now hoping would be a budding relationship between Marcie & Al. Then on February 28, 2003, after a particularly scathing snip and snarkfest between Marcie and Al, Max, Al's father, approached Marcie, of all people, to see if she would tutor his son. The significance was not lost on fans of Marcie and Al. Tessarae87 jumped on the idea like it was a steaming cup of diner coffee on a bitterly cold day: What can I say about today's show? Ladyday was close behind and with
a plan already percolating: LOVED your commentary and...
I
too am a MARCAL believer. Damn, do we have to start up another campaign?
And it became clear to all that
things had changed. The time for MARCAL was here. Tessarae87 tried
to sum up the sentiment: I hate to say it...
I’ve tried to avoid it. But we
just may have to start that campaign, Ladyday.
Then on March 2, 2003, Ladyday took everything to a new level. She brought her newly created MARCAL signature to the board and was the envy of those near and far. Ahem, Tessarae, what do ya think? Thanks to Lafaux for the new snaps of MARCAL, and of course, thanks to my girl, b, for her wizardry (I know it's simple HTML shit to you all, but it's magic to me). So what's next, Tessarae? Slogans, ready to print postcards, should we send in paper towels to show our support for our new couple? Just give me the word and I am on it.
The idea was clearly catching on. Aurora3kz (The Snappy Goddess-now retired) made an astonishing statement: LMAO! I might even fire up the old snappy machine again just to make some LOVE COLLAGES.
And there was nothing left to do but join the party: Diner Love! I am so loving this, Ladyday! Every time I look at them I crack the hell up. They just put a smile on my face. So, hell yes, we need to go for the full treatment...--Tessarae87
And the rest as they say is history.
On March 6, 2003, The Diner of Love (The MARCAL Homepage Website), was launched. It was the first website on the net devoted exclusively to Marcie Walsh and Al Holden. And shortly after that The Corner Booth message board became the happiest place on the net.
THE CORNER BOOTH
The first anniversary of the site was celebrated a year later and at that point had passed more than 69,000 hits.
Anniversary Card posted on the Main Page on 3/6/04
MARCAL proved to be a wildly popular couple and the fan devotion and love they inspired far exceeded anything that could have been imaged when they only existed in the wild imaginations of a few dreamers.
