Nineteen eighty-seven brought the arrival of Max Holden, an irresistible charmer with big dreams.  Max showed up in Llanview to ask Maria Roberts, a friend of his late mother, Patricia, for a loan to enable him to fulfill his lifelong dream of buying the Bella Vista ranch in Argentina.  As soon as Maria saw Max talking with Tina, it suddenly dawned on her that his handsome newcomer could be of use to her!.  Maria hated Tina—she wanted her out of Cord’s life once and for all__and Max Holden would provide the ways and means to make it happen.

Maria agreed to give Max a substantial loan on one condition: He must somehow find a way to lure Tina out of town.  Max eagerly accepted the mission, unaware that though separated from Cord, Tina was pregnant with his baby!  Cord didn’t know, either.  When Tina got news of her delicate condition, she left a message on Cord’s answering machine, but Maria got the message first and erased it!  Thinking Cord didn’t care that she was carrying his child, Tina fled town with Max. Their destination: Argentina!

In Buenos Aires, Max headed to the ranch and discovered to his horror that its owner, Don Alonzo, had been murdered.  Max and Tina soon stumbled upon a drug ring operated on the premises by the evil Dante Medina and Jamie Sanders, who had fled to Buenos Aires to avoid drug charges leveled against him in Llanview. Now, Max and Tina, who was posing as his wife, found their lives in danger because he owned the Bella Vista.  Dante Medina wanted the ranch—and he would do anything to get it.

Max knew Dante Medina all to well.  Only  a few weeks earlier, Max had romanced his impressionable daughter, Gabrielle, before leaving for Argentina and heading home to the United States.  At first, Gabrielle was thrilled to hear that Max was back! She hurried out to meet him, only to discover that he was married to Tina, or so she mistakenly believed.  Dismayed, Gabrielle held back tears, and didn’t tell Max her big news that she was pregnant with his child!

When Cord finally discovered that Tina was having his baby, he headed to Buenos Aires to try to convince her to return. Kate Sanders (who knew that her brother Jamie was hiding out there) journeyed with him.  Cord and Kate grew close as they shared a sizzling tango in the streets of Buenos Aires.

Cord and Tina were reunited briefly, before Cord was knocked unconscious and Tina was taken hostage by Jamie Sanders and Dante Medina, who planned to flee with her to Brazil.  As they prepared to leave, Gabrielle suddenly arrived and pleaded with her father to let Tina go free.  Just then, Jamie decided to take Gabrielle hostage, too! Dante, refusing to let his daughter get involved, tried to stop Jamie.  A scuffle ensued, and a horrified Gabrielle watched as Jamie Sanders shot her father dead.

In desperation, Jamie forced Tina into a small boat he had hidden in a jungle river.  As he made his way down the river with Tina as hostage, a shot rang out, hitting Jamie.  He fell into the rushing water, seemingly dead.  Tina, unable to free herself, could only pray as she tumbled over the ferocious Iguazu Falls and disappeared into the swirling waters.

After a fruitless search, Cord and Kate headed back to Llanview together.  Max followed, selling his ranch and investing the money in Delia Garretson’s new fashion design business.  Max’s straitlaced brother, Steve, joined him in Llanview.

Cord was devastated by Tina’s “death.”  Despite her lies and their separations, he still loved her dearly.  He also mourned the death of his unborn son, just as anguished Kate bemoaned her loss of her wayward brother.  Cord and Kate comforted each other in their time of grief.  Upon arriving home, Kate was doubly shocked to discover that her parents, Charles and Judith, had divorced. In rapid time, Judith was seeing Dorian’s ex-husband, Herb Callison.

As news of Tina Roberts’s “death” spread through Llanview, Cord’s mother, Maria, was wracked with guilt over her role in Tina’s demise.  She admitted to Clint that yes, she’d encouraged Max to take Tina out of town, and she’d lent him the money to buy the ranch.  However, Maria claimed to have done this only because she thought Max would be good for Tina!  Lying through her teeth, Maria said she never dreamed Tina was really pregnant.  Her argument proved convincing—Clint believed her.

As the weeks passed, Kate and Cord grew even closer, much to the chagrin of Kate’s snooty grandmother, Elizabeth Sanders.  Fearing that Kate was falling in love with Cord (whom she considered beneath her), Elizabeth too action.  To keep them apart, she secretly arranged for Kate to go to Egypt on an archaeological dig.  Cord grew alarmed at the thought that Kate would leave town.  She couldn’t go.  He loved her!  Driven to act, Cord professed his deep feelings to Kate, who decided to stay in Llanview.  Within days, Cord asked Kate to marry him.

In April, Gabrielle Medina, who heard rumors of a white woman being kept alive in the jungle, sent out a guide to investigate.  He returned with a feverish and weak Tina.  As her fever subsided, a bereft Tina told Gabrielle that she must have miscarried her baby in her terrifying tumble over the falls.

When Gabrielle went into labor, Tina helped in the delivery of her beautiful baby boy.  Believing that Tina was married to Maz—and that she could give the baby a good life—Gabrielle turned her newborn son over to Tina.

Tina hurried back to Llanview with the baby, whom she named Al after Cord’s late “father.”  Upon her return to Llanview, Tina was aghast to discover that Cord was about the marry Kate Sanders.  Hailing a cab, she raced to the church, arriving just seconds after the ceremony.  The wedding guest shrieked in horror as Tina barreled through the church doors, with baby Al tucked safely in her arms, and promptly fainted!

Overwhelmed with the cataclysmic series of events, Cord was faced with a dilemma.  Should he stay with Kate?  With Tina’s return, their marriage was now invalid.  Or should he reconcile with Tina, and make a life with their baby?  After careful consideration, Cord told Tina that  he would do right by the child, but he wanted to begin a new life with Kate.  Despondent, Tina tried trick after trick to win Cord back. Kate’s anxiety grew as Cord spent more and more time with Tina and baby Al.  Cord became anxious when Kate rescued her former boyfriend, mad scientist Patrick London, from prison on the island of Zaroon.

Patrick proved even more devious than Tina in his quest to win Kate away from Cord.  When he botched an attempt to kill Cord with an exploding camera, the demented Dr. London was sent to prison.  Strangely, he was very quietly bailed out by Elizabeth Sanders, who arranged for Patrick to be transferred to a mental institution.  Together, Patrick and Elizabeth plotted to get their revenge on Cord and the Buchanans.

When Maria Roberts learned from Gabrielle that baby Al was not Cord’s and Tina’s child, she threatened to expose Tina if she didn’t grant Cord a divorce.  Tina had no choice but to end her marriage to the man she loved.  At the same time, Maria became unhinged.  She wanted Clint Buchanan all for herself, and that meant she would have to murder Viki—and frame Tina for the crime! Wearing a blonde wig, Maria tried to run down Viki in her car. Fortunately, Viki was saved by her gardener, Gilbert…who bore more than a striking resemblance to her guardian angel, Virgil.  Next, Marie applied a deadly poison to a pair of earrings that Tina planned to give to Viki for her birthday.  The poison, designed to kill on contact, accidentally spilled on Maria during a scuffle with Tina, who watched in horror as Maria fell to the floor—dead!

Cord anxiously prepared for his second wedding to Kate.  When he arrived at Maria’s apartment to invite her to the wedding, Cord was horrified to discover the corpse.  The wedding was postponed while Tina was arrested for murder.  Max stood by her throughout the ordeal.  During Tina’s trial, the truth that Gabrielle and Max were really baby Al’s parents came out.  Tina was found guilty and sent to jail, where she encountered Jamie Sanders, who also had miraculously returned from the dead only to be captured and incarcerated.  Even more vengeful than before, Jamie wanted Tina dead!

Fearing for Tina’s safety, Max and Cord busted her out of prison.  During the prison break, Jamie Sanders escaped, too.  Cord returned to Llanview, while Tina and Max hid out in a monastery, Monk’s Hollow.   Alone together, they made passionate love.  When new evidence surfaced, Tina was cleared of the murder charge.

Back at home, Max tried to forget Tina by having a torrid affair with a suave and sexy older businesswoman, Lee Halpern, who was on Llanview to open a branch of her shady consulting firm, Dyna-women.  In reality, Lee was actually Tom Dennison’s not-so-late wife, Carol, who was believed to have died in a car accident.  Tom’s teenage daughter, Mari Lynn, had a bitter reconciliation with the mother she had never known.  Fortunately, the girl found comfort in the arms of her compassionate boyfriend, Wade Coleman.

Asa was delighted to reunite with Lee’s friend, Renee Divine.  Renee, who ran a brothel in Nevada, had once had a fling with Asa.  Now, years later, they picked up where they left off, and Renee was so charmed by her handsome millionaire that she gave up her “madam” business and stayed in Llanview to start a new life.

Realizing that Max could not get Tina out of his system, Lee married the newly divorced Charles Sanders—who died of a heart attack while making love to his new wife on their wedding night in Lake Tahoe.  Back in Llanview, Max proposed to Tina.

In Argentina, Gabrielle was shocked when she saw, while leafing through a fashion magazine, that Delila had taken credit for fashions that she had designed.  Gabrielle got even angrier when she discovered that Max was Delilia’s partner.  He’d taken advantage of her once again!  Gabrielle came to Llanview to confront him.

Max’s amazing discovery that he was actually Al’s father did not deter him from pursuing Tina.  Despite her lingering feelings for Cord, Tina finally agreed to become Mrs. Max Holden.  Together, they searched in vain for Tina’s real miracle baby, who was not dead after all!  Assisted by Palupe Indians, a feverish Tina had given birth to a boy in the jungles of Argentina.  Together, Max and Tina searched for the child, unaware that the baby, whom they call Milago (Spanish for “miracle”) was being held by Max’s enemy, Rolo, an old associate of Gabrielle’s father, Dante Medina.  Rolo planned to use the baby to get revenge on his nemesis.

On the run, Jamie Sanders hurried to Monk’s Hollow, where he found Tina with Viki.  As he was about to leave with them as hostages, Clint arrived—and Jamie shot him in the head.

Max managed to subdue Jamie (who was jailed) while an ambulance rushed Clint back to Llanview Hospital for emergency surgery.  After hours on the operating table, Clint survived.  However, his surgeons were unable to remove a bullet fragment, which left him blind.  Worse, if the fragment shifted, it could kill him instantly!

Viki had a difficult time getting Clint to accept his blindness.  Self-pitying and bitter, Clint needed help and he found it in the person of Sarah Gordon, his tough-as-nails therapist.  Sarah was a tough teacher!  She refused to allow Viki or the rest of the Buchanan family to treat Clint like a helpless baby.  Sarah’s firm approach put her in constant conflict with her patient who rebelled at her policy that the could live a much better life as a blind man by doing things for himself.  As a result of her work with Clint, Sarah won the love and affection of the entire Buchanan family.  This was especially true of Cord, who turned to Sarah after Kate finally called it quits with him and left town to pursue her scientific studies.
