VOICE OF THE NIGHT

A Moment In The Night

The students are waiting for the party to begin at the Student Center.  Rex makes a move on Jen and tells her she looks hot.  Shawna is drinking from a flask.  Molly is looking around.  The place is crowded with students milling about. Jen wonders aloud why there is no music.  All eyes turn to Marcie:  Isn’t Voice of the Night supposed to be DJing this thing?  Marcie assures them he is coming because she emailed him at least a hundred times and he said he’d “do” the party.  Shawna suggests they all go to the Phi Beta Sigma party where there will be music AND beer. Marcie tells them that the Voice of the Night is coming.  Shawna scoffs at her:  You’ll believe anybody and anything.  Marcie’s feelings are hurt but just then a familiar voice fills the room:

Hey, Everybody.  Sorry I’m late.  You ever notice how daily life can interfere with the night?  Not to worry, the darkness is here.  Let the party begin.

 Marcie is ecstatic.

 LATER

Marcie spies Joey Buchanan, the new curate and the object of Marcie’s unrequited affections.  She rushes next to him.

Marcie: Hey, I didn’t know you’d be here.

Joey:  Neither did I.  Hi, Marcie.

Marcie:  Well, there goes my theory.

 Joey: Excuse me?

Marcie:  The theory that you are Voice of the Night.  He’s so smart and intuitive and he really cares about people.  But since you’re here you can’t be him.

Joey:  Well, he does say some pretty wise things.  Listen, I could probably take a couple of lessons from him.

Marcie smiles broadly as Joey excuses himself and walks away.  In her mind, truer words have never been spoken.

On Storms, Secrets & Love: 2/3/03

Watch out. The storm is definitely here. Weird about storms -- they bring out the good and they bring out the bad. Be careful, boys and girls. Make sure you know the difference.

Soft, cool, snow drifting down. You never know -- maybe just a little dusting, a soft white kiss, or maybe it'll be a blanket piled on top of blankets, covering up all kinds of secrets. Nothing like a storm to help you see the truth, see what's really important. Right? The wind's howling, snow's getting deep, and you're all alone. All that matters is love. Look for it. Find it. With a storm like this blowing through, you got two things you can count on -- true love and great music.

We're headed into the heart of it now, folks -- the heart of love, the heart of passion, the heart of the night. Light the fires. Lock the windows tight against the wind. This storm's different. Something's in the air. Can't you feel it?

On Safety: 2/4/03 & 2/5/03

To all you night owls out there in the storm, watch it. A wind like that can cut you clear to the bone. Do what you have to to keep each other warm. And remember, this is the kind of night that changes things forever.  Storms can fool you. You think you're safe, but you're not. You think you know someone, but you don't. Things are rarely what they seem. It's easy to lose yourself on a night like this. The storm will swallow you whole if you let it. And sometimes finding your way back can be the hardest thing in the world.  On a night like this, we have to keep an eye out for each other. Don't let your loved ones drift away. Yeah, this is the kind of night where anything can happen.

Nothing like a storm to help you see the truth -- See what's really important.  All that matters is love. Snow is still falling. Mother nature's not quite through with us yet. Wicked night to be alone, Llanview. Stay warm. Reach out to that special someone.

On Lost & Found: 2/06/03

We're not in Llanview anymore, boys and girls. Snow's taken care of that. No street signs, no landmarks, no borders. People are bound to get lost going deeper and deeper into the darkness -- so far, they may never find their way back. Don't be afraid, boys and girls. Sometimes when you're lost, you find exactly what you're looking for.

On Alienation: 3/05/03

Ever find yourself looking in people’s windows as you pass their houses?  Night’s the perfect time.  You see the light of other people’s lives shining through the glass taking the darkness away.  You stand there and watch them laugh, smile and kiss.  And you wish to God you were inside.

On Connections: 3/05/03

You feel around in the darkness, your hands reaching out in front of you for someone, anyone, and you actually find someone and they are ready to hold you and never let you go.  Well, do you really need anything else?

We’re all looking for a friend in the night.  Sometimes you make that connection…a true connection.  You wake up in the morning and that person is lying there beside you.  But sometimes we make a mistake.  We think they’re the one but they’re not.  Just a dream—a dream in the dark.  By morning your special someone is gone and you are all alone.

So boys and girls the only thing you can really hang onto is yourself and just you.  Easy to forget that and when you do, you’re in trouble.

On Sunshine & Loss: 3/07/03

All you lost souls in the darkness out there don't give up hope.  Light can arrive when you least expect it.  It can lead you out of the darkness.   But you have to let it in.

If you let the light in, it's like sunshine on your back.  It you don't, it's cold.  If you stay out in the cold too long...well, there's no telling what you'll do or what you might lose.

On Broken Dreams: 3/12/03

What happens to broken dreams?  Do you keep dreaming them?  Do they break you?  Don't let them.  Dream a new dream and maybe, just maybe, that dream will come true.

On Disconnection: 3/26/03

So what if there's still some light left to the day.  We still need music to get us through.  Right?  Sometimes days are harder than nights.  We can be sad or lonely anytime.  What do you do?  Who do you turn to? What if you don't have anyone to turn to?  What's left?  What do you do?

On Stars & Wishes: 4/9/03

Here I am, all alone in this dark, little I'm thinking about all the millions of stars up the in the sky. You know, there are 100 billion more in our galaxy, stars we can't even see. So, how do we know they're up there? How do we believe in something we can't even see?

A star has over 10 billion years to burn and glow, light someone's way. The rest of us have far less time. So you got to make every second count.

Why do we go after things we can't have? Why do we reach for the stars? Because even though we can't touch them, the more we reach, the more they touch us. There's always the one special star, the wishing star. Make a wish on that star, and maybe yours will come true tonight.

On Reality & Logic

Hey there, boys and girls, don't go away mad. Matter of fact, don't go away at all. The night's young, Capricorn's cool, and I'm back. Tonight's going to be special. So let's have some fun, huh? Are you ready? I am. You see, I've been away to a place where -- where the nights are darker, the dreams are stranger, and the dawn is a long way off. But everything's coming back to life. You can feel summer coming. You can feel the heat.

Know why we fear the light? Because that's reality, man. So the trick is to find a way to face your fears, not to run and hide in the dark. If you're lucky, someone who's not afraid to tell you the truth will step up and help you find your way home. I found somebody like that, somebody who listened when I needed to talk, somebody who talked when I couldn't say anything. Somebody who believes in me, trusts me, is proud of me.  And that's something special. Maybe even more than I deserve. I mean, she saved my life, and that's more than anybody can ask for.

Crazy stuff's been happening tonight. Stuff nobody ever would've predicted this morning. The type of stuff that can change your life as you head out into tomorrow. Sometimes it doesn't even make sense. You notice that? It's like it has its own weird logic.

On Wrong Turns  5/19/03

Kind of misty out there tonight, folks. watch yourself on the roads. If you're not careful, you could make a wrong turn, end up somewhere you never wanted to go.

It's not over yet, boys and girls. Now, I know it's dark out there. I know every time you think you're out, you're only in deeper, but you have got to keep fighting. Keep fighting your way through the mist.

Sometimes life makes you a little desperate. Your back's against the wall so long, you think you'll never get free. That's when you got to have faith, stay strong. Believe me, you'll make it. I've been there.

On Strength  5/20/03

We never know how much we can stand until we're right up against it. Sometimes the things that scare us look so big, we need somebody there to remind us how strong we really are.

Wherever you are tonight, you're not alone. There's somebody out there thinking about you. And, hey, maybe you're thinking about them, too. and maybe that thought will help you make it through the night.

You may be scared of what you're facing right now. You may even be wondering if you're going to make it through to tomorrow in one piece. You can do it. Just take the hand of the person next to you, hold on tight, and remind each other you're not alone.
