MARCAL SCENES PAGE 11
Scene 15 Bust In Time
June 3 Setup: Marcie is sitting at the receptionist desk at the Llanview Police Department when Nora walks by on her way to Bo’s office. She notices Nora and rushes toward her. Marcie: D.A. Buchanan? Nora turns. Nora: Hi, Marcie. You're working late. Marcie: Al's innocent. Nora: What? Marcie: The drugs that they found in his dorm room aren't his. They were planted. Nora: Ok. Well, I'm sure that'll all come out. Nora turns back toward Bo’s office but Marcie rushes around in front of her. Marcie: No, no, no. He's being framed! Nora: Has -- has Al hired representation? Marcie: I don't know, but it doesn't matter. He's being framed. Nora: Ok, he's out on bail. If he's innocent, his lawyer will prove that. Marcie: How can they prove that the drugs aren't his? Nora: Well, that's the beauty of the American justice system. It has its ways, Marcie. Marcie: But not if everyone's against him. You know, everyone thinks that he's guilty, and it's just because president Sumner needs a scapegoat and now Al's life is going to be ruined. You've got to do something. Bo strolls out of his office. Bo: Marcie. Your job here is to assist the department, not to pester Ms. Buchanan. Marcie: Oh, but Al's getting blamed for something that he didn't do. Bo: You're a very loyal friend on your time. On our time, you have to be an impartial employee. Marcie: Yes, sir. Nora: Bye, Marcie. Marcie: Bye. (Watches Bo & Nora enter office. Then mutters to herself) Even if I know who the dealer really is?
Meanwhile, Brad swaggers into Capricorn. He spots the bartender cleaning off a table. Brad: Hey, man. Can I get a beer when you get a chance? Bartender: I.D.? Brad shows the bartender his ID. The bartender studies it for a second then nods. Brad: Ok. Thanks. Brad walks to the bar. One of his cronies is sitting there. He sits beside him. Brad: Oh, man. This town is dead tonight. Anonymous Crony: Got any speed? Brad: You mean, do I want to get arrested? Anonymous Crony: Look, they already got Al Holden. Ok, the heat is off. Hey, you're not really going out of business, are you? Brad: No. This will all blow over in a couple weeks. Then we can do whatever we want. Back at the police station, Bo and Nora are talking in his office. Bo: I'm sorry about Marcie. She's still learning the ropes. Nora: Oh, don't apologize. You're lucky to have someone -- an employee who's so passionate about what she does. You know, I'm just sorry that the evidence against Al is so damning. Bo: Yeah. What can I do for you? Nora: Um -- this is Matthew's guardianship papers that I told you about. Bo: Uh, right. Nora: You know what, Bo? We don't have to do this now if you don't want to. That's ok. Bo: No, no, no, I want to do it. I think it's real important. I just -- I hope to God we never have to use these things. Nora: Oh, well, yeah, I'm kind of hoping I'm sticking around for a few more years, too. Bo picks up the phone and punches a button. Bo: Marcie, could you step in here for a minute? Marcie rushes in. Marcie: I'm sorry about before. Bo: No, no, no, no, it's not about that. I just want you to witness our signatures. Marcie: Official business? (Very excited)Oh, sure, I can help with that. (Watches as Bo and Nora sign the forms. She is almost breathless with excitement.) So, what is it? Is it a summons? Or a brief? No -- a subpoena? Bo gives Marcie a stern look. She does a zip gesture across her lips then rushes out of the office. Nora: If you could do that with Matthew, you'd be, like, my hero. Bo: Oh, no, no. With Matthew, I use bribery. Nora: Yes, I noticed. I'm still trying to get the chips out of the carpet. He had a great time last night, Bo. Bo: Not as good a time as I had. The phone rings in Bo’s office. He picks up. Bo: Buchanan. Marcie: There's a nun on the phone from St. Ann's who says it's about Lindsay Rappaport. Bo: All right, thanks. This is Commissioner Buchanan. Nun: This is sister Ruth. Something very disturbing happened to Lindsay Rappap— Lindsay grabs the phone. Lindsay: Mitch killed Jen! He killed her! He killed her!
Later, Marcie is placing a file in a file cabinet when Hank walks in. Hank: Marcie, is the commissioner in his office? Marcie: Went out. Hank: Thanks. Marcie: Al Holden was framed for that drug bust on campus. Won't say any more, but I just wanted to let you know that Al is innocent and that I'm going to prove it. Marcie nods her head and then sits at her desk. Hank walks over and leans on the desk. Hank: Marcie, you work for the police department now. The police -- they make arrests when crimes have been committed. They do not determine who's guilty or innocent. Marcie: (Raises her eyebrow) You wouldn't put an innocent person in jail, would you? Hank: No, I would not. Rae walks in. Hank: Would you excuse me for a moment? Marcie nods. Hank: Thank you. Hank walks over to Rae. Rae: Hi Hank: Hey, Rae. Thanks for coming in. Rae: Well, coming in wasn't the problem. It was trying to find you that was a little hard. I went to your office, I went to the courthouse, and -- well, look, here you are. Hank: Yeah, here I am. Rae: Here you are. Hank: Listen, why don't we talk in Bo's office? Rae: Ok. They walk into Bo’s office. They talk and Rae essentially tells him that he needs to lighten up and stop being such a stick in the mud. Marcie: Mr. Gannon sure left in a hurry. Rae glances at Marcie. Rae: Yes, he did. Marcie: Was there an emergency? Rae: No, no. Marcie: What happened? Hank strolls in balancing a football. Hank: Hold this, and don't drop the ball. (Gives ball to Rae then begins to roll up his sleeves) All right, so you think Hank "The Cannon" is dead and buried? Rae: Uh -- Hank: Well, you're going to go to the park with me, and I'm going to show you a little Hank "The cannon." Rae: That could be a bit of a problem. You know, it's dark outside. Hank: Well, now, that's one of the perks of being the district attorney. They show you where and how to turn on the field lights. So I hope you are ready to be a wide receiver because I feel like throwing a few cannonballs. Rae: I think I've created a monster here. Hank: Worse. Give me that. (Takes the football) All right. You're going to come with me. You say I need to loosen up? I'm going to show you what it's like to loosen up. Rae: You're on. Marcie watches the exchange with interest. She catches Rae’s eye and they smile at each other as Rae and Hank depart.
And even later, Antonio walks into the police station. Antonio: Hi, Marcie. Any messages? Marcie looks up from the file she was reading and then rushes to put some files away. Antonio sits at his desk. Marcie rushes over. Marcie: Antonio, I know I've been saying this to everybody, but, um -- Antonio: Marcie? Marcie: I wanted to talk to you about a friend -- a really good friend. Antonio: Look, Marcie, if this is about fixing tickets or anything like that -- Marcie: No, no, no. no, I would never use my position here at the station for something like that. People who park illegally are guilty. My friend is innocent. Antonio: Al Holden again. Marcie: Well, those drugs that they found in his dorm room were planted. I just want to prove it. I was wondering if you could give me some tips. Antonio: Tips? Marcie: Please? Antonio: You really like this guy, don't you? Marcie: I do, but I also care about justice. Antonio: So do I. Why don't you let me do my thing, and when I come up with something I'll let you know. Marcie: Thank you. Thank you so much. You know, no matter what happens, I'm not going to let Al go to jail for something that he didn't do. Thanks. Marcie smiles at Antonio gratefully then goes back to her desk. Antonio leans back in his chair, puts his hands behind his head and flexes his muscles.
June 5 Setup: In the reception area of the Llanview PD, Marcie is sitting at her desk flipping a pencil, Gabs is pacing in front of the desk and Max is sitting on the bench staring into space. Al enters slowly. Al: Hey. They all snap to attention. Gabs rushes to him and hugs him. Marcie rushes around the desk and stands behind them. Max walks next behind Gabs. Gabrielle: Are you all right? Al: Yeah. Thanks for posting my bail. Max: Listen, your mother put up most of it. How are you doing? Marcie: Was it horrible? Al turns and looks at Marcie. Al: Not that bad. I'm glad you're here, though. Marcie smiles and swings gently from side-to-side. Al smiles at her. Gabrielle: Listen, why don't you come home with me and get some rest? Al shifts around toward Gabrielle. Al: Um -- I don't really think going to the commissioner of police's house would be the best -- Gabrielle: Al -- Al: Place for me to be right now, you know? Gabrielle: It's Bo's house, but, you know, it's mine, too. Max: We'll straighten this out, Al. Al turns and looks at Marcie. Al: Oh, the only way to do that is to find out who put those drugs in my room. Marcie: (Excited and in a firm voice) Well, we already know who did it. It was that loser Brad White. The scene cuts to Brat at The Palace Restaurant passing drugs to his Anonymous Crony then back to Al, Gabs, Marcie & Max at the PD. Al: Well, the university didn't waste any time expelling me. I didn't get a chance to defend myself. Gabrielle: Oh, Al -- and after you -- you worked so hard to pull yourself together and get your grades back up. Marcie: I'm not going to let everything that you worked for go down the tubes. You know, I can follow Brad, catch him dealing, and then get proof for the commissioner. Gabs and Max look at Marcie with wide-eyes. Al: No, you won't. (He looks at Marcie) At least, not without me. Max: You're a good friend, Marcie. Al pulls Marcie next to him and wraps his arm around her waist. Al: Well, she's a little more than that, dad. Actually, Marcie and I have been dating. Gabrielle: Oh? (Obviously shocked) Max: I kind of figured. Al: You know what? Marcie is on the right track here, okay? If we can figure out where he's dealing, we can probably get something to use against him. Gabrielle: I think you ought to take this to Bo. Marcie: The commissioner has been putting pressure on the university about these drugs for a long time. That's why they were cracking down. Al: You couldn't look any more guilty than I do. I mean, they found the drugs in my room. Marcie: The commissioner has to do this by the books, but we don't. Marcie laughs. Al: (Looks at her and laughs too) Right. Gabrielle: (Very worried) Whoa, whoa -- wait, wait a minute. Slow -- slow down here. This could be extremely dangerous where drugs are concerned. Al: Listen, all we're going to do is watch him. We see him doing anything illegal, we call the cops, we let them deal with it. Max: You promise? Al: Yes, dad. I -- mom, you have nothing to worry about here. Marcie and Al look at each other. Marcie: Yeah, you know, we could check out the country club. That's where all the rich kids hang out there by the pool all summer. Gabrielle: Well, if this guy is so rich, why is he dealing drugs? Al: Because he gets a kick out of it. You know, his rich little friends need a little something -- Gabrielle: Oh -- Al: He slides right in there and supplies it for them. Scene shifts to Brad at the Country Club giving Rex his cut for referring a client.
In the meanwhile, Max and Gabs are still in the reception area of the PD. Max puts his cell phone in his breast pocket. Max: I left a message with Evangeline Williamson. She's supposed to be the best defense attorney around. Gabrielle: I just never wanted al to get mixed up in anything like this. Max: Look, he didn't do it. He's not going to prison. Gabrielle: You don't know that. The evidence is stacked against him. Max, we know that he's innocent, but how many guilty people have you heard say, "Oh, I was set up"? Max: Bo is not going to let Al go to prison for something he didn't do. Gabrielle: I wouldn't be so sure about that. He's so wrapped up in this Mitch Lawrence case at the moment and besides, not too long ago, when al was in a bad place, he gave him the benefit of the doubt about something, so I don't think he can do it again. Max: Well, look, come on, let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Let's just take it one step at a time. Only thing we can do right now is be positive and support Al. I mean, look at Marcie. I don't think she's going to let Al down. Gabrielle: (looks disturbed) No, I suppose you're right. Max: Well, that didn't sound very enthusiastic. Gabrielle: Uh -- no, no -- I'm -- I'm very pleased. I really am. Marcie's -- she's terrific. She's very helpful and she's very smart and she certainly does care a great deal about Al. Max: (Crosses arms) But -- Gabrielle: I just didn't realize that she was his girlfriend. Max: The word he used was "dating." Gabrielle: Yeah. Max: If this gets more serious, is this a problem for you? Gabrielle: I just always pictured Al with a different kind of girl. Max: Oh -- oh, you mean the glamorous type with a good family, father's a doctor or a lawyer, mother's got a great career? Gabrielle: Max, is that so awful of me? Max: No, but it sounds just like Jen Rappaport (pauses dramatically) and look where that led. Gabs nods.
Al and Marcie walk out onto the patio at the country club where a pool party is in full swing. Most of the teen and teen-plus scene is present and accounted for: Rex, Brad, Joey, Jen, Flash, Jessica, and Antonio. Al notices Rex and walks up to him. Al: Balsom. Seen Brad anywhere? Rex studies Al for a minute then puts his arm around his shoulders and pulls him to the side and away from Marcie. Rex: Dude -- what, are you going to buy right after you were busted? Al: The drugs they found in my room weren't mine. Rex: Yeah, sure. But a word to the railroaded -- don't lie back down on the tracks. Al: Do you know where he is or not? Rex: Yeah, he's around here somewhere. Jen dressed in a tiny bikini eases up next to Marcie. Jen: So, what's the story with you and Al? Marcie: We like each other. Jen: Well, yeah, I kind of figured that out when I saw you guys doing it in your dorm room. Marcie: We're dating, ok? Jen: That is so weird. Marcie: Why? Because someone who liked you would never be interested in someone like me? Jen: No. Because you guys hated each other before and, jeez, you're so touchy. Marcie: I'm sorry. The truth is this whole dating thing -- it's new to me. I'm happy. Jen: Good for you. Marcie: Thanks. Hey, you know, I hope that you find someone, a good guy, soon, too. Jen looks over at Rex. Jen: I do ok. Marcie: Rex? Rex is a jerk. If you ask me, he brings out the worst in you. In the meanwhile, Brad approaches Flash. Brad: Are you working this party? Flash: Get lost, Brad. Brad: I didn't think they let hookers in here. Flash: Well, guess what -- I'm not a hooker. Brad: Oh, really? Because I seem to remember paying for a hotel room and a couple of bottles of champagne in exchange for -- something. Flash: That you didn't get. Brad: Yeah, I remember that, too. Flash: So what does that say about you, Brad? Can't even get sex when you pay for it. Brad: Yeah, touché. Flash walks away. Joey rushes to her side to make sure everything is okay. Jessica and Antonio are strolling around. He is obviously not particularly comfortable and she teases him about it. Jessica wins the door prize—a large stuff lion with cubs. She is very pleased.
Al has located Brad. He snatches the sunshades Brad has dangling from the front of his shirt. Marcie is right behind Al. Al: You set me up, Bradley. Brad: What are you talking about, Holden? Al: You planted those drugs in my room. Brad: Are you using again? You should be careful with that stuff, man. Drugs kill. Marcie: Everybody knows that you're the dealer on campus. Brad: Easy, chubs. Al grabs Brad but Marcie jumps in between them. Marcie: Al -- Al, don't, don't. You're out on bail. You don't want to get in any more trouble. Al releases Brad. Marcie crosses her arms and stares at Brad. Brad smirks as Al hands him the sunglasses back and then walks away. Al looks down at Marcie. Al: I don't know what I was thinking. What, did I think the guy was just going to turn himself in? Marcie: That's why we have to catch him in the act. Al: I just don't like people talking about you like that. Marcie: It's ok, Al. I know that I don't look like any of these girls running around here in their bikinis, so -- Al: What girls? Marcie: (laughs) You liar. Al nudges her and wraps her in his arms for a minute while she giggles merrily.
Meanwhile back at the PD, Gabs and Max are still talking. They are sitting on the bench in the reception area. Gabrielle: All that I want is for Al to be happy. Max: Well, then maybe we should let him make his own choices. Gabrielle: You're right. You're also right about Jen. She was horrible and Marcie is a -- she really is a very sweet girl. Max: You said that before. Gabrielle: I just have to get used to the idea, that's all. Maybe it's silly, but I've imagined for a long time who Al would fall in love with, and -- this is just going to take a little -- little adjustment. Max: It's ok. Just don't say a word to Al. Gabrielle: Oh, of course I wouldn't. Max: Look, I -- I get where you're coming from. I really do. Gabrielle, you're a beautiful, sophisticated woman. Now, it makes sense that you would want someone just like that for your son. Gabrielle: Do you think that she makes him happy? Max: Yes, I actually do. Gabrielle: Then I'm happy for him.
At the country club, Al and Marcie are sitting next to each other on a chaise lounge, facing Joey and Flash, who are at a table. Marcie: I know that you've been trying to get the kids at the community center off drugs. Joey: Yeah, I've been trying. Unfortunately, I'm not always successful. Marcie: Well, Brad's one of their suppliers, you know, so if we could get rid of him -- well, what I'm asking is, if you would be willing to help us shut him down? Joey: I'd love to. It's just that I've never actually seen him do anything illegal. Flash: Yeah, I mean, when he shows up at the garage and deals, we never see it. Joey: I mean, if I had some proof -- but I'm sorry, guys. I'd love to help you out. Al dips his head, but Marcie rubs his arm in a comforting gesture. Jessica and Antonio walk over to Al and the group. Flash: Brad's a pig. If you need help bringing him down, I'm in. Jessica: Hey, Joey. Joey: Hey, sis. Jessica: How's it going? Al: What's up, Jess? Jessica: Hi. Um -- I heard about what happened, about the arrest. Marcie: He didn't do it. The guy that did -- the real dealer's over there. Al: Yeah, listen, I know that it sounds crazy, but those drugs weren't mine. I was definitely set up. Jessica: I believe you. I mean, I've heard about that guy around campus. Marcie: See? (looks at Antonio) Everybody knows, so why can't you arrest him? Antonio: We'll see, Marcie. (looks at Joey) Let me tell you something. (Joey walks next to Antonio and they walk off) Look, I got a couple things set up, based on what Marcie told me. Marcie: How can they make you pay for something that you didn't do? Al: Well, I guess I'm just going to have to throw myself on the mercy of the court and hope that the judges believe me. Antonio and Joey return. Antonio: (looks at Jessica) Let's get out of here. Joey: See you all later. Jessica: Bye. Bye, Flash. Marcie: Bye. Al: See you. Joey: All right, you guys have nothing to worry about. Thanks to Antonio, we should have all the proof we need.
Rex is stretched out on a chaise lounge sunning. Joey walks next to him. Rex: (eyes closed) Hey. Get out of my sun. Joey: You're going to lose more than that tan pretty fast in Statesville. Rex: (Opens eyes and looks up) What are you talking about? Joey sits in a chair beside Rex. Joey: I know about this little deal you've got going with Brad White. (Rex glances around) No, don't look over there. He can't know we're talking about this. Rex: Ok, I don't know where you're getting this from, man, but I don't have any deal with anyone. Joey: Yeah? I've got witnesses willing to testify that you hooked them up with Brad for drugs in order to get a little piece of the pie. I'm not going to turn you in. Rex: Hmm. Why not? Joey: Because you're going to help me bust him. Rex: I can't believe a priest is blackmailing me like this. Joey: Don't think of it as blackmail. Think of it more as self-preservation. Rex glances back at Brad who is lounging on a bench with his shades on and his face turned up to the sun. Rex: What do I have to do?
June 6 Rex is still at the country club. He is feeding cherries to Anonymous Brunette Girl. Rex: Got to keep our strength up, right? We'll need lots of energy tonight. Anonymous Brunette Girl smiles at him and then strolls away. Roxy careens onto the patio. She is talking to the maitre de. Roxy: So I was thinking maybe you could give me one of those tables with the big umbrellas? Maitre de: And you are? Roxy: You don't remember me? Roxy Balsom? Foxy Roxy's Hair Haven, the pride of Angel Square? Maitre de: Madam, this is a members-only club. Roxy: Oh, really? Well, I'm meeting someone who is all member, believe you me -- Asa Buchanan? Maitre de: Mr. Buchanan said nothing about a guest. Roxy: Yeah, well, hey, don't sue me because I got here early. I thought I'd wet my whistle a little. (spots Rex) Hey, my son is over there. Hey! Hey, Rexy! Hey, Rexy, I thought maybe you could vouch for me, tell him I’m your mama? (Rex ignores her) Yo, Rexy! (the maitre de forcefully escorts Roxy out)Hey, hey, get your hands off me. You don't need to throw me out of here. Get your hands off of me! Joey slithers over to Rex’s table and sits down. Rex: Get lost. Joey: You are exactly the kind of guy who would trade his mother for a day at the country club. Rex: Don't push it, Buchanan. I'm the one who said he'd help you with your stupid sting operation, remember? Joey: You had no choice. Either you help bring down your drug-dealing buddy over there or you go down with him. Rex: What -- would you listen to yourself? You act as if there's no risk. Joey: Well, sure, there is, but you'd better deliver. Otherwise, you'll be a member of another exclusive club -- Statesville Prison. Rex: Yeah, definitely a first. Joey: What? Rex: Being blackmailed by a priest.
Meanwhile at the garage club, Al and Marcie are sitting at a table with Flash. Flash: That guy's slime. He has hurt friends of mine. One of them almost died from the drugs brad sold him. Marcie: Tell me about it. That's why we have to get him off the street. Flash: But this plan's never going to work. Brad knows I hate him. I mean, he'd never think that I would buy drugs from him. Marcie: Even if he's the only game in town? Flash: There's never only one game in town. Marcie: Oh. (giggles) Al: Well, I obviously can't be the bait. Marcie: Well, there has to be some way to do this. We can't let Al go to jail. Al: There's got to be somebody that he won't suspect. Flash glances over at Riley, who is onstage strumming his guitar softly. Flash: Maybe there is.
Later, Flash is sitting on the edge of the stage. Riley is talking to Al and Marcie in the center of the club. Al: Riley, man, are you sure you can handle this? Marcie: You don't have to do it if you don't want to. Riley: Look, I said I would, and I will. Flash: It could get really nasty, Riley. Riley: Look, I was two inches from dead because of brad and his stuff, all right? This should've been done a long time ago. Flash walks up behind Riley. Flash: You know, I could still try and make the deal. Riley: No way. He knows you don't use. I'll be fine. Besides, when you're in a band, you stick together. Flash: Come here. (pulls Riley to the side) Look, how much do you know about this guy? Riley: Brad? Oh, I know he deals here and down at Angel Square. Flash: Yeah, but does he, like, have anybody backing him up? Riley: No, he's always by himself. He thinks he's invincible. Flash: And what about a gun? Does he have a gun? Riley: Hey -- I will be okay. Flash: I know you think you will, Riley, but I just want to make sure you're going to be okay. (Hugs him) Riley: Thank you. I will be fine. Flash: You better be. They walk back to Marcie and Al. Al: Riley, listen, I can't thank you enough. You know, this guy planted drugs in my room, and I have no defense. Marcie: Yeah, well, you will once the sleazebag gets arrested. Riley: Are we sure that the police are involved? Marcie: Are you kidding? Two undercover guys in narcotics are right over there. Riley: Really? Marcie: Let's do it. Flash: Yep.
At the country club, Joey and Rex are still talking. Joey: You know, if you got a problem with me or any of this, we can always just go take a walk. Rex: First you blackmail me, and then you're going to punch me out? Joey: This isn't a game, Rex. Rex: Did I say that? Joey: You can't just shrug this off and hope someone will say, "Oh, well, never mind, it's okay." We're talking about the next 10 years of your life. Rex: Okay! Okay! Joey: Good. Make this happen. Joey gets up and leaves. Rex eases over to Brad. Rex: Hey. How's it going? Brad: Uh -- not bad, not good. How about you? Rex: I don't know. I'm cool. Listen, I have another customer lined up for you. Brad: Really? Who? Rex: My usual percentage, of course. Brad: Tell me it's that little hottie you're always hanging around with, Jen Rappaport. Rex: No. No, not Jen. This guy's over at the garage. You should give him a drive-by. Brad: No, forget it. Rex: Why? Brad: Those guys are nickel-and-dime, man. Look, the action's here. You land a couple of these billionaire wannabes, we can both retire to the south of France. Rex: Well, when did you get so picky? I mean, I thought sales were down because of all the security on campus. Brad: Yeah. So? Rex: So, you interested in my guy? He's got cash, looking for happiness. Quick in and out. Brad: Yeah -- yeah, all right. Just let me finish my drink. Brad walks away. Rex nods at Joey.
Joey arrives at the garage club. Joey: All right, guys, any minute now. Al: Joey, thank you so much. Joey: Don't thank me. It's not over yet. Officer: (Hands money to Riley) Just pay whatever he wants. Riley: Right. Officer: The fewer people around, the better. Marcie: Yeah. If he sees us, he'll know something's up. Al: Ok, Marcie, let's go out back. Marcie, Al and the officers move out of sight. Flash: I have to stay with Riley. We'll pretend we're rehearsing. Joey: Ok. Be careful, Riley. You, too. Rex opens the door to the club and Brad walks in. He spots Flash on the stage strumming a guitar. Brad: So, who's the customer? It better not be her. Riley walks up to Brad. Riley: Brad, thanks for coming. I need some stuff. Brad: (looks at Rex) What the hell's going on? Rex tries to look innocent. Brad: What are you trying to pull? Rex: Nothing, man. He just wants to do business. Brad: Riley, you went cold turkey months ago. Riley: I tried to stay clean, okay? But the music wouldn't come, you know? Rex: Yeah, Midnight Logic has a recording deal, and he just really needs to start cranking the stuff out. Brad: Oh, yeah? (glances over at Flash) You and that scam artist over there? Riley: Yeah. Look, come on. Just give me some, okay? Brad: How'd you get the cash? Riley: We got an advance on our recording deal. But, listen, she cannot know a thing about this. Brad: (thinks for a moment) Okay. The usual? Riley: Five for 100? Brad: Yeah. (Riley gives him the money and Brad gives him the pills) Now, you know where to go when this runs out. Brad pulls off a bill and casually holds it out to Rex. Rex in the meanwhile is looking around as if he has no idea what Brad could possibly being doing. Rex: What? Brad: Don't you want your cut? Rex: (puts hand behind head instead of taking the bill) Uh, yeah. Sure. Officer: Freeze! Police! Don't even think about it. (Grabs Brad and forces
his hands behind his back) Second officer: Brad White, you are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. Al and Marcie come into view and smile at Brad.
At the police department, Bo, Hank, Nora and Antonio are in Bo’s office. Voices can be heard in the background and then see the group coming down the hall. Antonio: Excuse me. Antonio walks into the reception area. The officer is leading Brad toward Antonio’s desk. Al, Marcie, Riley, Rex, and Flash are behind them. Officer: Hey -- Brad: Ok, thank you. Ok, thank you. You can let go now. Let go -- Antonio: Shut up. (Looks at the officer) How'd it go? Officer: Like clockwork. He sold to the decoy and took our money. Antonio: Great. Hank, Bo and Nora come out into the reception area. Brad: You guys are pathetic. You can't prove anything. It's this punk's word against mine. Antonio: Are you serious? What are you, stupid? No, don't (huffs) Brad: Yeah. Antonio: Don't answer that. We got you for the sale, which was witnessed. You got paid with marked money. Not to mention possession with intent to distribute. Hank: All right. Looks like you'll be getting real familiar with prison life in Statesville. Bo: Nice work, everybody. Marcie, I don't think this quite fits into your job description. Marcie: No, sir. Bo: (focuses on Riley) Excuse me. Young man, you deserve a special thanks. What you did took guts. Riley: No problem. Off to the side, Marcie and Al talk to Nora. Marcie: Brad is the one who put the drugs in Al's room. Al: Yeah, for shoving him. Marcie: Can't you force him to admit it now? Nora walks back over to Brad who is sitting in a chair next to Antonio’s desk. Hank: Go for a plea. Nora: Brad, do you have any idea how many years you're facing? Brad: I got nothing to say without a lawyer. Nora: (leans in close to Brad) Well, that's good, because I've got lots to say, so I’ll do all the talking. You know, the drug problem on campus has been front page every day. Every day. And whether this takes six months or six weeks, no judge is going to be in the mood to be easy on you, so I think your best bet, probably, is to get the charges reduced from the outset. Brad: Then reduce them. Hank: Look, we know you put the drugs in Al Holden's room. Nora: You come clean with that, and we will help you out. That's how it works. Brad: I didn't put the drugs in Al Holden's room. Rex Balsom did. Rex lunches toward Brad but is held back by one of the officers. Brad jumps up and faces Rex. Rex: You lying piece of scum! I had nothing to do with those drugs in Holden’s room. Brad: If you want to deny it, go ahead. Marcie: Brad is the one who's lying. Flash: The guy does nothing but lie -- Antonio: Have a seat, all right? You're giving me a headache. It's obvious you're not smart enough to know when to shut up. Brad: What? Antonio: You were asked a direct question, and you lied. Let's see -- what does he get for lying to a police officer, Hank? Two years? Hank: Three years. Joey: He's also impeding a criminal investigation, isn't he? Brad: Give me a break, would you, father? Hank: That's 18 months. Nora: Ok, you have a really small window of opportunity, and when it closes, you could be in way too deep for any of us to help you. Bo: Forget it, Nora. There's other ways to exonerate Al Holden. I want this guy to go away until he's at least 65. By this point, Hank, Bo, Nora, Antonio and the other officers are all in front of Brad in a semi-circle. Antonio: That is if he survives that long. That little shirt and long hair -- boy, the boys at Statesville are going to love you. Nora: Ok, I can get you down at least two counts, but you got to help me out here, and I don't have all day. Nora turns her back on Brad and walks toward Bo’s office Brad: Okay. Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay. I planted the drugs in Al Holden’s room. Marcie and Al: (smile) Yes! Brad: Satisfied? The phone rings and Marcie rushes to answer it. Bo: Book him. Al: See you later, Brad. (Brad is escorted away) Al: (to Riley) I -- man, thank you so much. I mean, you were -- you were great. Antonio: Hey, hey, hey, none of this would have happened unless Marcie over there wouldn't have kept bugging everybody. Marcie approaches Bo. Marcie: Commissioner? Bo: Yeah? Marcie: Blair Cramer’s on line two. She says it's urgent. Bo: Thanks. (Bo goes in his office and picks up the phone) Blair, what's going on? Blair: Bo, you got to get to Clear Lake fast. Mitch was here, and he shot Walker. And the cop that was here? He's dead. Bo: We'll be right there. Bo: Antonio, Laurence just surfaced. We're out of here. Antonio: (to Riley) Fill out these forms. Give them to Marcie when you're done.
Later, Riley is filling out the forms sitting at Antonio’s desk. Flash: Once you fill out those forms, they're so going to draft you into the police academy. Riley: It's just my version of what happened. Joey: You know, you did a really good thing today. A lot of people owe you. A lot of people are proud of you. Rex: Yeah, I didn't do a damn thing, so don't bother to thank me. Joey: You know, you ought to consider yourself lucky we asked you to help out. Otherwise, you'd be down there getting booked with brad. But if it helps, thanks. Rex: Whatever.
In the meanwhile, over at Marcie’s desk, Al and Marcie are talking. Al: Marcie, I -- I can't say it enough. Thank you. And not just for tonight, but for sticking by me and for believing in me. Marcie: (smiles and giggles) Oh, it's okay. But, you know, Riley did all the real work. I just kind of -- Al: You just cared. I'm never going to forget that. Al sits on the desk, puts his hands on her shoulders and pulls her gently to him. He kisses her passionately.

Gabrielle: Could you take a picture? Because Al just graduated and I'd love to get a shot of us together. Flash: Sure. Absolutely. Gabrielle: Ok, everybody, let's take a picture. Al: Ok. Gabrielle: Get close. They all poise. Flash: All right, everybody, smile, ok? Gabrielle: Smile! Flash: One, two – Flash snaps the picture. Rex and Jen walk into the restaurant. Jen notices the celebration. She looks at Rex. Jen: Just order me whatever you're having. I'll be right back. Jen approaches Al and Marcie. Jen: Nice hat. Must be a real thrill to have your little crush here to show it off to. Al pulls Marcie close and wraps his arms around her shoulders. She wraps her arms around his waist. Al: Matter of fact, it is. Where’s your crush? Oh, he's probably off showing off your little hat, right? You do have a hat, right? Marcie: (looks worried) Al -- Al: I mean, you did graduate? Marcie: Al -- Al: Yeah, you're right. It's a waste of energy anyway. Marcie and Al walk away.
At Angel Square, Al and Marcie rollarblade into the scene. Al is helping Marcie maintain her balance. Al: Look, not too fast, all right? You're going to hurt yourself. Max: Whoa, whoa – Max sees them and steps toward them. Al: Oh -- hey, dad. What are you doing here? Max: Hey, Al, I was just -- I was just out for a walk. How's the skating? Al: It's great. Max: Good. Al: Listen, actually, there's something I wanted to run by you. I've already talked to Marcie about it, but I'm thinking of applying to law school in the fall. Max: You're -- you're kidding. Al: No, no, I'm serious. I mean, my grades weren't that good, but Llanview U. Has a special policy on alumni. so I figured if I go to summer school, I do really well on my LSATs, I'd be able to get in. Max: Wow, I -- I can't tell you how proud I am of you. Al: Let's just see what happens, you know, dad? We’re going to take off, but it's good seeing you, all right? Max: Yeah, yeah. Be careful. Al: Yeah. Al and Marcie start skating again slowly. Marcie laughs as she tries to get the swing of things. Al: Ok, are you good? Marcie: Yeah. Al: All right, let's go. (puts his hand on her back protectively) There we go. Max watches them then sits in front of the angel stature. Max: Hear that, Luna? My son's going to go to law school. who the hell would've thunk it? I guess if I were any kind of father, I'd pay for it. Oh, who the hell am I kidding? I'm not any kind of father.
June 12 Setup: At Angel Square, Al and Marcie have finished skating. Al: That was some workout, huh, Marcie? Marcie: Yeah, I never thought it'd be so much fun. Jen arrives on her red motorcycle, which she just bought, to Rex’s consternation. Jen, however, is only interested in Joey, who is way too interested in Flash as far as she is concerned. Jen manages to rumble to a stop right next to Joey, the curate, on who she bestows the helmet removal hair toss gesture. Joey: Ahem. Jen: Zero to 70 in less than six seconds. Joey: With a helmet, of course. Jen: I didn't think you cared. Don’t worry. I'll be careful. Joey: Whoa, whoa.
Al is standing talking off to the side talking to Joey and Flash. Marcie is sitting in front of the angel stature. She glances at Al then smiles. She seems very happy. Jen narrows her eyes as she watches Flash and Joey then approaches Al. Jen: Al. Jen can’t stop looking at Flash and Joey, although she is trying to pretend she is has some interest in Al. He is not fooled. Al: Can I help you with something? Jen: Yeah, yeah. I just wanted to congratulate you on your graduation. Al: Yeah. You did that already at the restaurant. And you were rude. What’s the matter, alcohol rotting your brain? Marcie is watching Jen and Al. Rex slips next to her. Rex: Marcie. Marcie: (glances over at him) Rex. Rex: Guy used to be in love with her, you know. Marcie: I know. She used to be my best friend. Rex: Hmm. (scans Marcie’s body) Pretty big change for Al, don't you think? Marcie: What? Rex: Well, dating somebody like you after her. Marcie: (looks away for a second and exhales then snaps) What do you mean, someone honest? Rex: Yeah, right. Guys are (he arches his eyebrow and smirks)-- are really turned on by honesty. Rex leaves and Marcie pulls out a clipping from her back pocket about “Losing weight for more summer fun.” She studies it for a few seconds and then slips it back into her pocket. Al walks over. Al: Hey. Sorry about that. Marcie: Ok. Al: Do you want to go grab some ice cream? Marcie: Um -- no. No, I'm not hungry.
