Scene 19

You've Got A Friend
OLTL: 6/27/03, 6/30/03, 7/7/03 & 7/11/03

June 27

Setup: Joey and Jen have been playing chicken with their feelings for each other for some time.  They alternate pretending they don't care about each other.  Rex, on the other hand, has learned that Jen has inherited a few bucks as a result of her father's unfortunate demise. He is now completely sure of what he wants. As the scene opens, Joey, dressed in a white t-shirt and black jacket, is standing in the front hall of Llanfair.  Someone knocks on the door.  When he opens it, he finds Jen standing there.

Joey: Jen.

Jen: I've been thinking a lot. You and I are running in circles.

Joey: Huh?

Jen: We have to stop playing games and admit how we feel.

Joey: Is that what you really want?

Jen: You know what I want. Why don't you do what you want, what you've wanted since the second we met.

They kiss passionately.

Viki comes down the stairs.

Viki: Well, that didn't take long.

Joey is dragged out of his fantasy.  He is now dressed in his curate outfit.

Joey: What? Uh -- excuse me.

Viki: I said it didn't take long for you to get changed to go to the party.

Joey: Right. You know, there's something I need to do before dinner.

Viki: Oh, sweetheart, Asa hates latecomers, especially at his own parties.

Joey: I know, I know, but do you remember when I told you that I had to straighten something oh…with…with --

Viki: Jen.

Joey: Well, things didn't really go how I'd like them to, and I just -- I have to do something about that right -- right now.

Meanwhile outside of The Palace, Jen and Rex look at Marcie smugly. (Marcie, BTW, looks gorgeous)

Marcie: You're not getting married? Oh, come on, you guys. This is nuts. You hardly even know each other. I mean, fun is fun, but marriage is for life.

Rex: (rolls eyes and leans back on his heels) Oh, lighten up, will ya?

Jen: Well, I want to have fun for life.

Rex: Come on, let's go.

Marcie: No, no, wait, wait. You're not? Really? I mean, are you? Come on.

Jen nods her head slightly.

Marcie: Have you talked to anybody else about this? You know, your mom? Your brother?

Jen: Nope. The only people that know about it are you and Joe, and Joe couldn't care less.

Jen tightens her lips and looks off into the distance.

Later, Marcie rushes into The Palace Restaurant and spots Al.  She rushes up to him.

Marcie: Sorry I'm late. I ran into Jen and Rex.

Al: Ooh, please. (Draws up his body in a mock gesture as if he just received an electric shock treatment) No Jen today. I'm in too good a mood.

Marcie giggles and smiles at him.

Al: (smiles down at her) Hi.

Marcie: Hi. Is your dad here yet?

Al: Yeah. He's right over there.

They turn and look at Max and Roxy sitting at a table near the terrace doors.  Marcie smiles then turns and looks up at Al.

Marcie: Look how cute they are together.

Al: No, I don't know about cute. Roxy is a real pain in the neck. Although my dad did sort of fall apart when she wasn't around, I don't know. Maybe he sees something in her that we just don't.

Marcie: (flirty) Well, you never know.

Marcie smiles and giggles.

In the meanwhile, Gabs and Asa are chatting near a table off to the side in the restaurant.

Gabrielle: Asa, I just wanted to give you a message from Bo. He's held up at work, but he wants you to know that he will be here later, he promise

Asa: Ok. When that son of mine walks in that door, I'm going to be the first man to shake his hand. He finally bagged that maniac Mitch Laurence.

Joey walks into the restaurant, spots Renee near the bar and rushes over to her.

Joey: Rene

Renee: Oh! Yes, darling. Hi.

Joey: Have you seen Jen?

Renee: No, I haven't.  But if I do, I will give you a heads-up.

Marcie approaches them.

Renee: Hey, Marcie, girl, you look terrific!

Marcie: Oh, gee, thanks, Ms. Divine.

Renee: If you'll excuse me, I have to go feed Asa a bourbon and branch before he starts howling.

Marcie: Joe, I need to tell you something.

Joey: What's up?

Marcie: Jen and Rex are -- I'm sorry if this ruins your family evening --

Joey: No, no. Actually, I came here looking for Jen.

Marcie: Yeah.

Joey: What did Rex do?

Marcie: Well, they're going to Atlantic City -- to get married.

Joey: (softly) When?

Marcie: Well, if they haven't left yet, they'll be taking off soon. You know, she said that the only other person who knew that she was getting married was you and that you didn't care. But I know you do and I know you're trying to help her. I mean, you know how she feels, right?

Joey: About Rex?

Marcie: No. About you!

Joey looks surprised.

Marcie: I mean, not that she's ever come out and said anything to me, but, I mean, it's obvious, you know. When she looks at you, she looks at you the way I did.

Joey: Jen wants someone to love her because she thinks that love will take all her pain away. I can't encourage her to think that I'm some kind of answer.

Marcie: Why? Because you're a minister?

Joey: No. Because -- she's going through a lot of pain right now, real problems. I can't take advantage.

Marcie: Hey, everybody has problems. I mean, you have problems whether you're in love or not. Are you saying that she can't have feelings for you because she's going through a bad time?

Joey: No.

Marcie: She needs somebody who cares about her and somebody that she can trust. I just can't be that person for her right now, and that person sure isn't Rex Balsom.

Joey: Definitely not.

Marcie: Listen, I was thinking, you know, if you care at all, maybe you could just -- you know, maybe you could go after her and at least try and talk her out of this stupid marriage.

Joey: You know what? I will. Thank you, Marcie.

Joey walks away.  Marcie watches him, smiles broadly and nods.  Joey walks over to Asa.

Joey: Hey, grandpa, I'm really sorry, but something's come up. I have to go.

Asa: Wait a minute. I've got a real surprise for all you people.

Joey: I know, but I'm sorry. I'll come back if I can.

Later, Max is sitting at the bar and Gabs rushes up to him.

Gabrielle: Max, I didn't know you were going to be here tonight.

Max: Hey. Oh -- oh, I'm not with Asa and his crowd. I'm here with Roxy and the kids.

Gabrielle: Oh. Oh, I see. And they're still having fun together, are they?

Gabs glances over at the table where Marcie and Al are chatting with Roxy.

Max: Oh, yeah. I think Marcie makes Al smile more than anybody else I've ever seen.

Gabs turns back and looks at Max.

Gabrielle: Yes. That's true. I agree. It's just I wish that --

Max: Oh, don't say it.

Gabrielle: You're right. Honesty is certainly not the best policy always.

Max: Is there something up with Bo?

Gabrielle: Yeah --

Max: Hmm.

Gabrielle: Well, no. I was honest about my feelings about Bo and Nora, their relationship.

Max: Hmm. Oh, you mean about being jealous.

Gabrielle: Yeah.

Max: Hmm.

Gabrielle: I -- I don't think it was a good idea that I said something, but on the other hand, if I didn't say anything, I think my head was going to explode.

Max: Hmm. Well, that must have been why you were having cocktails last night with Troy -- blow off a little steam, huh?

Gabs looks mortified.  Max smirks.

Max: So? What's the story on you and Troy Boy Toy?

Gabrielle: I'm going to go talk to kids.

Gabs walks over to Marcie and Al’s table.  She touches Al on the shoulder.

Gabrielle: Hello!

Al: Hey.

Gabrielle and Al hug.  Gabs kisses him on the cheek.  Once Al sits back down she leans over toward Marcie.

Gabrielle: Marcie, you look so pretty tonight.

Marcie: Oh, thank you.

Gabrielle: I'm so used to seeing such bright colors. That black -- it really --

Al: Mom?

Gabrielle: What, darling?

Roxy: She say you look a lot thinner in black, honey.

Gabrielle: What?

Marcie: Right.

Al gets up and takes Gabs gently by the arm.

Al: Will you excuse us?

Al guides Gabs some distance away.

Al: What are you trying to do, mom? Are you trying to insult her?

Gabrielle: No, of course I'm not.

Al: Well, listen, it's fine for you to say that Marcie looks good. Compliment her. I like it. She appreciates it. But don't comment on her weight.

Gabrielle: I wasn't! I was going to say that she looks very sophisticated in black.

Al: No, you weren't, mom. Listen, I understand that it was Roxy that drove the conversation into the ditch, but people expect that from her. Not you, ok?

Gabrielle: (swallows hard) If I was insensitive in any way, I apologize.

Al: Fine. Just do me a favor and try and watch what you say. Please.

Later, Al, Marcie, & Max  are at the table together.  Roxy joins them again after offering advice to Asa on his love life.

Marcie: Well, there's so much talk about weddings today. Cris and Natalie, Mr. Buchanan and ms. Divine, Jen and Rex --

Roxy: Jen and Rex?

Marcie: Yeah, they're going to Atlantic City to get married. Didn't Rex tell you?

Roxy: My little baby boy is getting married in my favorite city and he didn't invite me? Come on, Max. We got to go.

Max: Whoa, we're not going anywhere. I'm not zipping off to Atlantic City in the middle of the night. It's not -- oh –

Roxy drags Max out of his chair.

Roxy: You bet your sweet tush you're going!

Max: (turns to Marcie & Al) She's in love with me.

Al: You all have fun now.

Max: Oh, thanks for the help!

Roxy tugs on Max and pulls him forward.

Roxy: Come on, man!

Meanwhile, in Atlantic City, Jen and Rex get married.

June 30

In Atlantic City, Jen and Rex are in a casino ostensibly to celebrate their marriage. Jen is standing by a roulette table on which there is a bottle of champagne and two glasses.  Rex walks over to her with a large paper bucket in his hand.

Rex: (hands the bucket to Jen) Here you go.

 Jen: Oh, this is, hey.

Rex: Yeah, it's 100 bucks. Play the slots. I'll be back.

Jen: Wait a minute. This is our wedding night. Aren't we supposed to celebrate?

Rex: Love you. (kisses Jen on her right cheek) Love you. (kisses her on the left cheek) Love you. (kisses her lightly on the lips) I have a poker game lined up, guys only. Figure I can make enough to cover our whole trip, make it all worthwhile.

Jen: We got married. Didn't that make it worthwhile?

Rex: See, sometimes you are so funny. We're going to make a great couple. And remember, 100 is your limit. If you lose that, quit.

Jen: Right, because you have that great investment idea lined up for my money.

Rex: Our money. See you.

Rex walks off and disappears.

Jen: So far, marriage really sucks.

Jen grabs her things and rushes toward the door and bumps directly into Joey.

Meanwhile, at the Palace Restaurant, Natalie and Cris are smooching on the Terrace.

Natalie: I can't believe this. We're really going to get married. We set a date. This is really happening.

Cristian: It's about time.

Natalie: I love you.

Marcie and Al walk out on the terrace.  They are surprised to see Natalie and Cris there.

Marcie: Oops.

Marcie watches them kiss and smiles at them.

Al: (a little irritated) I was hoping we'd get some privacy.

Marcie: We can go back inside.

Al: No. (Turns to Nat & Cris) Hey, guys. You know, you're missing everything.

Natalie: What?

Al: Kevin Buchanan -- he just showed up from Texas. That's big news, right?

Natalie: I've never met Kevin. Come on.

Natalie and Cris rush back into the main room of the restaurant.

Al: Does Al Holden know how to clear a room or what?

Marcie giggles.

Al tries to pull Marcie into his arms but she moves out of his arms.  He looks confused.  He watches her for a second then crosses his arms over his chest.  He looks hurt as Marcie makes a big display of staring up at the stars.

Marcie: Boy, what a night, huh? And the music. I'm just having the best time. Aren't you?

Al: Marcie?

Marcie: Hmm?

Al: What's going on?

Marcie: What do you mean? Nothing. You know, I mean, you made me that C.D., And the Voice of the Night played it just for me.

Al moves close to Marcie and touches her on the arm.

Al: Hey -- you're not worried that we didn't --

Marcie: No. No. No, because, like I said, you know, I'm just --

Al: Not ready. I understand. I would never rush into you anything, Marcie. I love you.

Marcie: (with a breathtakingly sincere expression on her face) Thank you. I love you.

Al leans in to kiss her but she moves away.

Marcie: (rapidly) Gosh, you know, I mean, I -- I know that I said you didn't want to hear anything about Jen, but, you know, I was just thinking that, I mean, she's going to Atlantic City to get married to that creep Rex Balsom. That's going to be the worst marriage ever.

Back at the casino, Jen and Joey stare at each other.

Jen: Ok, I give up. What are you doing here?

Joey: What am I doing here? Actually, I -- I heard you and Rex were getting married.

Jen: Yeah, it's a done deal. What do you think? So, did you just go from casino to casino just looking for us?

Joey: Actually, I went to the chapel where you were married. I just got there too late.

Jen: Too late for what?

Joey: You and Rex had already left.

Jen: Right.

Joey: Actually, I was hoping I could --

Jen: What, perform the ceremony? Trust me, it's a no-brainer.

Joey: Jen, come on.

Jen: What, did you want to give me another sermon about Rex? Is that it?

Joey: You could've done a lot better than Rex.

Jen: Yeah? With who?

Roxy spots Jen and drags Max over.

Roxy: There she is. Come here, you. You're in trouble, girl.

Max: Hey, there, Joe, Jen.

Jen: Hey. Why -- why am I in trouble?

Roxy: Why? Because I'm the mama and I wasn't even invited. You know, who's going to stand around and bawl?

Max: Where's Rex?

Jen: He's playing poker with the boys.

Roxy: Did you perform the nuptials?

Joey: No. Actually, I -- I came down to wish them well.

Max: Awful long drive for that.

Joey: Yeah. I should probably get going. Best wishes.

Roxy: So, what do you know -- I'm a mom-in-law, and I have a feeling it's a lot easier than being a mama. Hmm, you're a slot junkie. Oh, yeah. The family that gambles together rambles together -- or something like that.

Everyone thinks about that statement for a second.

Later, Roxy and Max catch up with Jen and Rex.

Roxy: Next time you better not leave me out of the mix. And next wedding, I better be invited.

Max: Roxy.

Roxy: What?

Max: Huh? Next --

Roxy: Oh. Oh, sorry. Uh -- I meant, you know, I'd better be invited to the golden anniversary.

Jen: Ok, we really need to get going.

Roxy: Where you going?

Rex: Well, I thought we could stay here and celebrate.

Jen: I want to go back.

Rex: Ok. Yeah. Great to see you guys. Have fun.

Max: So long. Congratulations.

Roxy: Yeah, to the two of yous.

Rex and Jen walk away.

Rex: What's up? You sure you really want to leave or just go someplace that they're not?

Jen: I want to go back to Llanview. So, did you -- did you win at poker?

Rex: Well, not exactly.

On the terrace of The Palace Restaurant, Marcie is staring up at the sky.  Al walks out with a plate of food.

Marcie: The moon went behind the clouds.

Al places the plate on the table and sits down.

Al: Yeah. Heard it's going to rain.

Marcie sits down at the table next to him.

Al: Hey, try some of these little fried things. They're really good.

Marcie: (shakes head determinedly) No thanks.

Al: Marcie, is everything ok with us?

Marcie: Sure. I mean, I hope so. I mean, are you ok --

Al: I said I was. I love you, Marcie. Anything else, that can wait -- can wait till later.

He leans over and kisses her but she keeps her hands to her sides.  Marcie pulls back.

Marcie: Ooh. I felt a drop.

Al: Yeah. Me, too.

Marcie: Let's go back inside.

Al: Ok.

They walk back into the restaurant.  Al has his arm around her waist.  They are smiling.

Joey is talking to Sarah while staring at Rex and Jen, who are sitting at one of the tables smirking.

Later, Marcie approaches Jen.

Marcie: So, you really married Rex? I mean really?

Jen: Sure. Hey, check out my rings. Aren't they gorgeous?

Al goes back on the terrace where Joey is standing, despite the fact that it is now really raining.

Al: Hey.

Joey: Hey.

Al: It's raining. Come on, man. Why don't we go inside, you know? Don't want to rinse all the starch out of your collar there, padre.

Joey: (pulls off his collar) Damn this thing.

Al: Yeah. That Rex Balsom, man, he is just the worst, you know?

Joey: Not much I can do about it now.

Al nods and puts his hand on Joey’s shoulder sympathetically.

Meanwhile, back in the restaurant, Marcie continues her conversation with Jen.

Marcie: But you hardly even thought about it, Jen. I mean, what is Rex to you really?

Jen: My husband.

Marcie: Come on. You could go to a judge in the morning, get it annulled.

Jen: You're just jealous because I'm married and I'm not going to stand around being someone's pal forever.

Jen prances away confident that she has totally zinged Marcie.  Marcie looks sad.  She draws her arms close to her body and leans against the table.

In the meanwhile, Rex makes a phone call.

Rex: Hey, R.J. Rex Balsom. Listen, I just wanted to let you know that I have the money for Ultra Violet. Do you want to swing by The Palace and talk details? Oh, I definitely have the money. I'm married now. Listen, I'll see you later.

Jen: Come on. I want to go to St. Ann's and tell my mom that we got married.

Rex: Uh, yeah. Why don't you do that on your own?

Jen: What, the crazies make you crazy?

Rex: Ah, well, a little.

Jen: Ok. Fine. I'll just go by myself.

Al comes back into the restaurant.  He is brushing water out of his hair and off his shirt.

Marcie: What were you doing out on the terrace?

Al: I was talking to Joey.

Marcie: Is he ok?

Al: He will be once he gets over Jen. But I'm here with you right now, so nothing else matters.

He kisses her and she giggles.

July 7, 2003 (Monday)

Rex & Jen are in a suite at The Palace.  Rex asks Jen for money to finance his investment deal with RJ.  In fact, he asks for a blank check and Jen signs one and hands it over.  Rex leaves but not before telling Jen not to bother waiting up for him because he might be late.

Later, in the hotel suite, Marcie has come to visit Jen.

Marcie: I -- I brought you a wedding present.

Jen: Why would you get me a gift if you don't even approve of my wedding?

Marcie: Well -- you know, I was just trying to stop you from making what I thought was a mistake. I mean, that was my job, as a friend. But -- well, now you're married to Rex and --

Jen: Till death do us part.

Jen sits on the bed.

Marcie: And, well, my job as a friend is to accept your decision and support you, however I can.

Marcie sits beside Jen.

Marcie:  Besides, everyone should get presents when they get married. Go on, open it.

Marcie: It's a wedding album, for your pictures.

Jen: I don't have any.

Marcie: (rattling rapidly; giggling, smiling and really trying to be upbeat) Ok. Well, it doesn't have to be a wedding album. You know, it -- it can be an anniversary album. Like every year, on your anniversary, you add new pictures. You know, I always thought it would be great, if I ever get married, to keep adding pictures every year so that after about 20 years, you have a whole history of your lives together. And of course, you could -- you know, you could always go through it backwards and watch yourselves getting younger and younger.

Marcie notices Jen’s blank expression.

Marcie: Um -- unless the problem is that Rex isn't the man you want to be standing next to in all those photos.

Jen closes the gift box and puts it to the side.  She gets up and walks away from Marcie.

Marcie rushes behind her.

Marcie: Jen, you don't love Rex. You never did. And there's no way that he loves you the way that you deserve.

Jen turns around and stands with her arms crossed over her chest.

Jen: I don't care about that, ok?

Marcie: How can you not care?

Marcie smiles then says: The other day, Al told me that he loves me.

Jen looks incredulous.

Marcie: Listen, think what you want, but he did. And I've never felt anything like this, well, in forever. And I don't know if I'll ever get to make an album with him, but if we do, it will be because it will honor the love that we share and not something that we did on an impulse and now are stuck with for the rest of our lives.

Jen: (nods) Thanks.

Marcie: (disappointed in Jen’s reaction) Yeah. Sure.

Jen: (slightly teary) No, really, Marcie, thank you.

Jen walks back to the bed and sits down.

Marcie: Jen -- well, don't be too quick to thank me. I was the one who sent Joe off to Atlantic City to stop your marriage. Listen, you -- you should have seen the way that he looked before he took off.

Jen stands up and stares at her.

Marcie: Jen, he cares so much about you. That was the face of a guy that you want standing next to you through a lifetime of anniversary photos.

Jen sits on the bed again and picks up the gift box.

Marcie: (walks to the door) I got it at Logan ’s, if you want to return it for something else. See you.

Marcie lets herself out.  Jen runs her fingers along the photo album.  Suddenly she puts down the album, grabs her purse and rushes to the door.  When she opens the door, she finds herself standing face-to-face with Joey.

At The Palace Restaurant, Rex literally bumps into Marcie.

Marcie: Oh, hey! Will you watch where you're going?

Rex: Hey, whatever you want to say, Marcie, I don't want to hear it.

Marcie: Well, that works out, then, because I have nothing to say to you -- except the part where I assume you know that Jen doesn't love you.

Rex: Thanks for that.

Marcie: You're welcome. You know, Jen loves Joe and he loves her.

Rex: And she's married to me, or did you miss that part? So, if the good reverend wants to mess around with that, he's going to have to bust himself through about 20 commandments.

Marcie: Hello. There are only 10.

Rex: Not if you know how to live right.

Marcie rolls her eyes and looks up.

Rex: See, you got to get out more often. My point being is, is no clergyman is going to come between me and my wife.

Marcie: Mm-hmm. If you say so, Rex.

Rex: I'll tell you what, Marcie -- how about you keep your mind on your speed freak boyfriend and leave Jen to me, ok?

Marcie: Al is not on drugs anymore and he never will be because he wants a real future, unlike you. You just don't --

Rex: Ok, ok! Just spare me the public service announcement, ok? And step aside. I need to go talk to my new wife about our future.

Marcie: Oh.

Meanwhile upstairs in Rex and Jen’s marital suite, Jen and Joey are making passionate love.

July 11, 2003 (Friday)

Marcie is sitting the receptionist desk at the police station reading Metropolitan Magazine with her mouth wide open.  One article touted on the front cover is: “ The 5 Secrets to Great Sex Every Woman Should Know.”  Al comes in and she quickly hides the magazine.

Al: Hey. You busy?

He holds two tickets in front of her.

Marcie: Hi. Oh, my God. That concert's been sold out for three weeks.

Al: Yeah. Pretty cool, huh?

Marcie: Third-row seats?

Al: One of the perks of being the Voice of the Night.

Marcie laughs softly and then they kiss.

Marcie: The concert starts kind of late and it's a pretty long drive back from New York.

Al: Well, maybe we should stay in the city, you know?

Marcie looks worried.

Al: We could get a hotel room with separate beds. Separate rooms, if you want.

Marcie: Ooh.

Marcie grabs Al and hugs him tightly.

Al: Hey, listen, I got to run. I got a couple of things to take care of. I will be back to pick you up after work, OK?

Marcie: Great. Great.

Al: Bye.

He kisses her.

Marcie: Bye.

Later, Rae walks by as Marcie is filing some files.  She calls out to Rae.

Marcie: Dr. Cummings?

Rae: Yes, Marcie?

Marcie: I'm sorry to trouble you --

Rae: No, no, it's all right.

Marcie: But I know you're so smart and you have all kinds of experience. I can't afford to pay you much, but I need your help.

Meanwhile, Al knocks on the door of the study at the rectory.  Max opens the door.

Al: Dad.

Max: Hey, Al. What brings you around?

Al: Well, I just haven't seen you for a while.

Max: Well, I'm glad you came by. You are alone, aren't you?

Al: Yeah.

Max: You're not hiding Roxy anywhere?

Al: What do you mean?

Max: Come on, I know what you've been trying to do here, and let me save you some time. Roxy and me ain't going to happen.

Al: Well, how come, Dad? I mean, you guys really seem to like each other.

Max: We do, we do. We're great friends. I hope we're friends for a long time. Lord knows I get a kick out of her. But we are not going down that road again. So thanks, but, you know, manage your own love life, would you? Speaking of which, how is it going with Marcie?

Al: Things are good, really good. You know, we're taking it slow, which is how she wants it.

Max: Yeah? And you? You OK with that?

Al: Yeah, you know what? I am. I mean, she's happy. I'm happy.

Meanwhile, back at the police station, Marcie walks to a corner and Rae follows her.

Rae: Marcie, don't worry about the money. Just tell me what you need.

Marcie: Well, it's about me and Al. You know, I want to -- I mean that I think it's time for us to, you know, experience everything.

Rae: Meaning?

Marcie: (laughs nervously then blurts out:) I want to have sex.

Rae: (smiles) Oh, I see.

At the rectory, Al and Max continue their conversation.

Max: Well, it sounds like you and Marcie are right about where you should be.

Al: Yeah. Yeah, I guess we are. (smiles) What about you, Dad? (Al closes the door) I mean, are you OK with how things went down at Capricorn?

Max: Sure. I mean, every ending's a new beginning, right? Now, I'm -- I'm a partner in a hair salon.

Al: (laughs) Yeah. You know, I was thinking maybe that you should change the name to "Foxy Maxy's."

Max: I'm a silent partner. I'm much more comfortable that way. Thanks.

Al: Yeah. Still, I get the feeling that you don't think you're doing enough, Dad.

Max: Well, I've been looking around. Yeah, yeah. You're right, you're right. I -- I just think I need a big change in my life, do something different. Seen your mother lately?

Al: I have, but you know mom. She's just hyper, busy, here and there. Why do you ask?

Max: I just like to keep tabs on her, that's all.

Al: You still care about her, don't you, Dad?

Max: Hmm -- yeah, I guess I do.

Al: Guess that's cool.

The door opens and Gabs rushes in, obviously flustered.

Gabrielle: Oh!

Max: Hey.

Al: We were just talking about you.

Gabrielle: What a -- what a lovely surprise.

Al: What's up?

Gabrielle: Uh -- nothing. Um -- just stopped by to talk to your dad about things, just see how things are going.

Al: Hmm.

Gabrielle: Yeah.

Al: OK. Well, good seeing you, Dad. I'm off.

Al and Max shake hands.

Max: Good to see you.

Al: (hugs Gabrielle) All right. Bye, Mom.

Gabrielle: Oh, good to see you. You have got to help me!

Al leaves.

At the LPD, Marcie and Rae are now sitting on the bench in the hallway.

Marcie: I'm embarrassed about how I look.

Rae: Marcie, Al is already attracted to you. Otherwise, why would we be having this conversation, right?

Marcie: Yeah.

Rae: OK.

Marcie: That's just part of it. You know, what if I'm not, you know, good at it?

Marcie jumps up and walks into the main area.  Rae follows.

Rae: Oh. Hey -- hey, hey, hey. Listen to me. Making love is -- is with two people, right? And you know what? You're right. Sometimes it's not perfect right away. It's kind of like -- like a process of discovery.

Marcie turns and faces Rae.

Rae: If you love each other, you'll find your way together. You know, this is a very big step. Yeah.

Marcie: Tell me about it.

Rae: You're going to be all right. (touches Marcie gently on the face) Just don't do anything that doesn't feel right to you, all right? And -- and I have to say this. You are going to do safe sex, aren't you?

Marcie: Yeah, right. Safe sex.

Rae: OK.

Marcie: Totally safe, super safe .

Rae: All right.

Marcie: Thanks, Dr. Cummings. You've been incredibly helpful.

Rae: (Smiles and pats Marcie reassuringly on the cheek) Good luck.

Later, Jen walks into the police station and spots Marcie looking over some files.

Jen: Marcie.

Marcie: Jen, hi. What's wrong?

Jen: I just can't take it anymore.

Marcie: Rex?

Jen: My mom. She was supposed to get out of St. Ann's today, and I thought that everything was finally going to be better and it was going to be over and she was going to be home, but now she's not. And I actually had some good news that I wanted to tell her. I just don't have anybody to talk to anymore.

Marcie: Jen, you can always talk to me.

Jen turns around and smiles.

Jen: You were right. I only married Rex because I couldn't be with Joe. But now we're going to be together.

Marcie: You and Joe?

Marcie smiles broadly and clasps her hands to her chest.

Jen: And he feels the same way as I do.

Marcie: Oh, Jen, that's great. Oh, I'm so happy for you. I mean, well, what about Rex? You guys are still married, right?

Jen: We're going to get a divorce.

Marcie: Oh, so once the divorce is final, you and Joe can really be together.

Jen: No, that's -- the cool part is that we don't have to wait much longer.

Marcie: (frowns) Well, but Joe's a -- he's a curate, and he can't be with a married woman.

Jen: That's what's so amazing. Joe is going to leave the clergy just to be with me.

Marcie: (shocked) Jen, that's horrible.

Jen looks confused.

Marcie: His religion is everything to him, Jen.

Jen walks away with her back to Marcie.

Jen: Well, obviously, some things are more important.

Marcie: But you've seen him down at the community center. People need him there. They love him. And he -- and he really helps!

Jen turns and faces her.

Jen: Well, he can still help people. He'll just do it as a civilian.

Marcie: Don't you get it? Being a clergyman -- it's not just a job, it's a calling.

Jen: Oh, come on, Marcie. Things are finally starting to fall into place for me. Can't you just be happy for me?

Marcie: I am. Joe loves you. That's great. And I'm sure that he's really happy that you love him, too. But if he has to give up what he loves doing, then he won't be happy for long, and that may just wind up haunting both of you.

Jen sighs and looks slightly pensive.
