 Scene 6

Heart Wishes 1: The Curate
OLTL: 4/2/03

Setup: Al meets with Gabrielle at Bo & Gabs apartment to finagle some more money out of her. Gabs notices that he looks “jittery” (and he does) but Al tosses it off as just the effects of having to study so much.  Gabs is pleased that Al seems to be putting his nose to the grindstone and asks how the tutoring sessions are going with Marcie.  Al tells her that Marcie is a real slave driver and has him reading everything on the auxiliary reading list. Gabs gives Al one hundred dollars for the extra books he “needs” and slips him an extra twenty for himself. They talk briefly about her relationship with Bo.  Al admits that he likes Bo well enough—“he’s not dad…I like him just the same.”  She tells him to come to her anytime he needs more funds for school.  Al thanks Gabs but then comes up with a vague excuse to leave quickly.  Outside he clutches the money and looks back at the door with a guilty expression on his face.

Marcie walks into Rodi’s and approaches the bar. She literally bumps into Brad who has just gotten a drink.

Brad: Yo, watch it.

Marcie: Sorry.

Marcie walks to the bar: Excuse me. Did anyone find a silk scarf here yesterday? It's the only nice thing I got for my birthday, and it's --

Bartender: What do I look like, a lost-and-found? Either order or take off! (Huh? Very rude and unnecessary!)

Marcie: (hurt) Um -- I'll have a diet ginger ale.

Marcie reaches for the peanuts and starts popping peanuts in her mouth.  Al rushes in and spots Marcie but then sees Brad over near the jukebox.  He hightails it over to Brad.

Al: Brad --

Brad: Yo.

Al: Hey.

Brad: Hey, man.

Al: Listen -- I need more of the same, please.

Brad: Cash and carry, Holden.

Al: (presses dollar bills into Brad’s hand) 20, 40 -- here.

Brad: Give me 15 minutes.

Marcie walks over to Al.

Marcie: What you doing, hanging out with Brad?

Al: Uh -- we were talking.

Marcie: You know he's always in some kind of trouble. Last week, his whole fraternity was suspended.

Al: Relax, okay? He was just telling me a funny story about one of our professors.

Marcie: Well, you weren't talking and you weren't laughing.

Al: Yeah, well, it wasn't very funny, okay? I need a soda.

Al walks over toward the bar. Marcie watches him and frowns.

Later, Marcie is sitting at a table still snacking on the peanuts.  Al is at the jukebox making a selection.  Marcie studies the now empty bowl of peanuts with a surprised expression on her face.  Al walks toward the table smiling.

Marcie: Did I really eat all those peanuts?

Al: (smiles) I'll get some more. (He taps her on the arm)

Marcie smiles at him then turns and watches him just in time to see Jen and Joey come in.  She is obviously upset to see them together.

Jen sashays to the bar.

Jen: Can I get vodka on the rocks? I've got I.D.

Curate Joey smacks her wrist.

Joey: You have a fake I.D. No way I'm letting you drink.

Jen: Look, you're not my minister.

Joey: No, I'm not.

Jen: So stop preaching and dance with me.

Joey: When you were at the police station, something happened that really upset you. Was it about your dad?

Jen: You never quit, do you? "Let me help you." I'll bet you show up at the police station every night just looking for some girl to rescue.

Jen walks away from the bar in a huff and goes toward the jukebox.  Joey follows her.  Joey takes her hand.  Marcie watches them and finally can’t stand it anymore.  She gets up and rushes toward the door but Al blocks her path with the bowl of peanuts in hand,  “Hey, where you going?”  Marcie tries to answer him but can’t.  She rushes past him.  Al spots Jen and Joey and realizes Marcie is upset.  He puts the bowl of peanuts down and rushes after her.

The MARCALS are still wondering what happened after Al ran after her. Sigh.

Scene 7

Heart Wishes 2: The Voice
OLTL:4/9/03

Setup: The Diner is busy.  Marcie walks over to a booth where Cris and Natalie are sitting.

Cris: Well, I'd better get to the studio. Don't want to be there all night.

Marcie: Are you talking about the art studio on campus?

Cris: Yeah.

Marcie: I couldn't help but overhearing.

Natalie: "Overhearing"?

Marcie: Well, the art studio is right near the station. I thought maybe you would see the Voice of the Night coming out and you could tell me who he is.

Cris: Well, all kinds of people come in and out of that place. How am I going to know who the voice is?

Marcie: Well, he's the tall, sensitive, totally gorgeous one.

Meanwhile, Al is at the radio station.

Al: This is the voice of the night. Sleep tight. Don't let the nightmares bite. Listen, Gordo, I'm done for the night, ok? I got two hours of tape here. That should be all you need. I'm going to get out of here, all right?

Gordo: Dude, a tape's cool now and then, but if the boss finds out, you're off the air.

Al: Yeah, I know. Listen, thank you for covering me, ok? I just -- I got some things to take care of. I got things under control. I'm handling things, all right? Just -- just -- thanks. Ok.

VOTN: Take a look around. Give it a real good look. Sometimes the brightest star isn't even in the sky.

Back at the diner Marcie is looking over at Joey who is in a booth talking to his sisters, Natalie and Jessica.  Marcie can’t keep her eyes off of Joey.  Al approaches the counter.

Al: Marcie -- can I have some more coffee, please?

Marcie: Sure.

Marcie pours Al a cup of coffee but she is watching Joey.  She fills the cup to overflowing.

Al: Hey -- Whoa! Ouaa! What is with you today?

Marcie: (focuses on Al) Nothing.

Al: Nothing?

Marcie: Nothing. There's your coffee.

Al: Yeah, there it is, all over the counter.

Marcie mops up the mess with a towel and the phone rings.  It’s Cris.  He asks her to give a message to Natalie for him.  Marcie writes down the message and then takes the note over to the booth and gives it to Natalie.  Joey locks eyes on her and there is an awkward pause.  He realizes they still need to get some things straight. Marcie walks back to the counter and Joey rushes after her.

Joey: Marcie? We need to talk.

Marcie: What would we have to talk about?

Joey: Um -- you, me, the kiss.

Marcie looks slightly embarrassed.  In the meanwhile, Al approaches his parents who are discussing the situation with Bo and Nora.  Al asks if they are talking about him.  Gabs is surprised by his sudden appearance. Al though is in a playful (chemically enhanced) mood and tells them, “ I know you guys are real stressed out about me making my grades, but, hey, isn't it nice when a son can bring his parents closer together, huh?”

Al slides into the booth with Jessica and Natalie.  Jessica asks him if he’s okay.  “ Marcie was just over here talking to me and she’s really worried about you.”  Al blows the comment off, “ Yeah, well, she shouldn’t be.”  Al glances over at Marcie who is talking to Joey.  He keeps shooting her glances as if he is irritated to see Joey trying to talk to her.

Marcie: Listen, I'm really embarrassed about this. Do we have to talk about it?

Joey: Look, Marcie, please, don't be. What happened was my fault. I really want us to be friends, (Marcie smiles) and I just didn't see that maybe you were taking it a little bit the wrong way.

Marcie: Oh, yeah.

Joey: No, listen -- please don't let this change things. You're smart and caring and honest. I need friends like that around.

Marcie: I do kind of miss being at the community center.

Joey: Well, the community center definitely misses you.

Al keeps stealing glances at Marcie.

Joey: Listen, someday you're going to find somebody who's perfect for you.

Marcie: (looks over at the radio) Actually, I think I already have.

VOTN: Why do we go after things we can't have? Why do we reach for the stars?

Al can’t seem to stop watching her.  Finally he slides out of the booth and rushes over to the counter.

Joey: Excuse me. (leaves)

Al: (leans on the counter) Marcie…Marcie, I understand that you're concerned about me –

Marcie whips around and presses her finger to his lips.

Marcie: Ssssshh! The Voice of the Night is on.

Al frowns and stands ups straight.  Marcie turns back toward the radio.

VOTN: Because even though we can't touch them, the more we reach, the more they touch us.

Marcie smiles as if she has just heard words of great wisdom. Al watches her for a minute longer then taps the counter and leaves.

Al and Marcie's exchange at the diner was cuteness personified! Sigh. They are so meant to be together!
