Scene 13

Diner Danger
OLTL: 5/16/03-5/20/03

May 16

Setup: Marcie helped Al withdraw and begin the recovery from his addiction to amphetamines but not without paying a price herself.  Gabrielle and Marcie walk into the police station.

Marcie: I really appreciate this.

Gabrielle: Oh, it's my pleasure. They're looking for a receptionist. You're looking for a job. Let's see if it works out.

Gabs puts her arms around Marcie’s shoulder and they walk forward but Marcie stops.

Marcie: I feel so bad about losing my job at the diner.

Gabrielle: Oh, Marcie, I think you were a little preoccupied, remember? Saving Al's life?

Marcie: Yes.

Gabrielle: Okay (grabs Marcie’s hand). Come on, let's do this.

Gabrielle approaches Antonio who is sitting at his detective desk and talking on the phone.

Antonio: I want to know if any major deliveries are coming into or out of the warehouses or businesses in that area. No, I want to know if the postman comes and goes. You get what I'm saying? Thank you.

Antonio hangs up the phone.

Antonio: Sorry, ladies. What can I do for you?

Gabrielle: Hi, Antonio. Obviously, we're here for Bo. Is he around?

Antonio: No, I'm afraid not. He's actually at a reading for Mitch's will. Can I help you with something?

Gabrielle: Thank you. No, it's all right. (points to the bench in the hall) We'll just wait over there.

Antonio: Ok.

Gabs and Marcie walk over to the bench and sit down.

Later, Bo has arrived and he and Gabs kiss passionately. Marcie glances away.

Gabrielle: Oh. I know you're busy. I know you have a lot on your plate.

Bo: (laughs) Oh, yeah, what's new?

Gabs kisses him again.  Marcie smiles and looks away again.

Gabrielle: (slightly embarrassed) Marcie, I don't get to see him very much. (looks at Bo) You know Marcie and what a good friend she is to Al.

Bo: Oh, I sure do.

Gabrielle: Well, see, the thing is she's looking for a job, and so I thought of that receptionist position that you were hoping to fill.

Marcie: Working for the police station would be awesome.

Bo: Oh, it's awesome. But, you know, human resources does all the hiring. (looks at Gabs) Of course, a recommendation from you -- that can't hurt.

Gabrielle: Thank you, darling. Of course a recommendation from somebody else that we know couldn't hurt, either.

Marcie smiles with Gabs conspiratorially.

Bo: Okay. Why don't I ask you a few questions, okay? And then I'll get a sense if you're really qualified.

Gabrielle: Oh, she's going to qualify, all right. She is. (puts her hands on Marcie’s shoulders)

Marcie: (nods excitedly) And if I do, well, then what happens?

Bo: (smiles at Marcie) Well, then I will speak to human resources, and then I will give them my personal recommendation.

Marcie: (excited) And that would help, right?

Gabrielle: Yeah.

Marcie: (laughs nervously and glances away) Of course it would. I say dumb things -- well, sometimes.

Bo: Okay.

Marcie: Sorry.

Bo: It's okay.

Marcie turns away.  Gabs mouths, “Thank you,” to Bo and he mouths “You’re welcome.” They kiss again.  Marcie glances back and turns away again smiling.

At the diner, Natalie is sitting at the corner of the counter with her legs stretched across two stools.  Carlotta approaches with a pot of coffee in her hand.  She walks behind Natalie.

Carlotta: I'm sorry about your brother, but I can't say that I'm surprised.

Natalie: (frowns) Well, it's a lot more complicated than it seems.

Carlotta moves toward the center of the counter and Marcie walks in.  Marcie rushes over and touches Carlotta lightly on the back.

Marcie: Hi, Mrs. Vega.

Carlotta: (whips around with a worried expression on her face) Marcie. Look, if you're here about your job, I hope that you understand. Honey, you really left me no choice.

Marcie: No.

Carlotta: And the position has been filled already.

Marcie: No, I completely understand. I -- I just wanted to come by because I wanted to make sure that there are no hard feelings between us.

Carlotta: (grabs Marcie’s hand) Oh, there could never be hard feelings between us.

Marcie: That's good. Well, I already found a new job.

Carlotta: You did? Really? Where?

Marcie: I'm working for the police station as a receptionist.

Carlotta: Oh, congratulations.

Carlotta hugs Marcie.

Marcie: Thank you. Yeah.

Carlotta: Wonderful.

Marcie: I'm very excited about it.

Carlotta: Good.

Marcie: I've never done anything like it before.

Carlotta: (takes hands) And remember -- no hard feelings.

Marcie: Ok. Thank you. That's good to know.

Cole Avery strolls into the diner and approaches Carlotta.

Cole: Where's your boy?

Carlotta: I have two sons, and neither one of them are boys.

Cole: I want Antonio, the cop.

May 19

Setup:  Natalie is still sitting at the counter at the diner and Marcie is sitting in a booth reading.  The radio is playing and Al, as Voice of the Night says, “Kind of misty out there tonight, folks. Watch yourself on the roads. If you're not careful, you could make a wrong turn, end up somewhere you never wanted to go.”

Carlotta tells Cole that she is not expecting Antonio any time soon.  Cole says he’ll wait anyway. Cole glances around the diner.  He looks at Marcie who is suspicious of him but smiles tentatively and then goes back to reading.

Flash and Nora come into the diner and take a booth.  Nora tells Flash that she is now Matthew’s official babysitter.  Flash is flattered that Matthew likes her so much and she is very grateful that Nora agreed to look over the recording contract for her.

Natalie gets up and head toward the door. Coles makes his move and pulls out a gun.  He tells Natalie to stay put. “All right people, you know what this is.”  He demands they empty their pockets—cash, wallets, and jewelry.  Carlotta manages to call Antonio but she is forced by Cole to break the connection when he puts a gun to her head.  He listens to the response and realizes she called Antonio. He makes everyone get away from the door and gets the keys from Carlotta.  He tells them that they will pay if they try to keep any of their jewlry, money or valuables from him.  VOTN: It's not over yet, boys and girls. Now, I know it's dark out there. I know every time you think you're out, you're only in deeper, but you have got to keep fighting. Keep fighting your way through the mist.

Antonio star69s and realizes it was his mother who called.  He calls her back and Carlotta is able to signal to him that something is wrong at the diner despite the fact that Cole is watching her like a hawk.  Given Cole’s threat to get really angry if anyone tried to hold back anything, Marcie is very nervous when she realizes that Natalie didn’t include her engagement ring among the jewelry.  She confronts Natalie:

Marcie: You didn't put your engagement ring on the table.

Natalie: Because I wasn't wearing it, was I?

Marcie: Oh, God, Natalie. I know we've never been friends, but I'm really, really scared.

Natalie: Look, don't worry, all right?

Marcie: What if he gets mad? What if he starts shooting?

Natalie: Ok, just -- sit down, sit down. it's going to be fine, ok? Everything's going to be fine, guys. Just -- just do what he says.

Flash: How can you be so calm?

Natalie: I don't know if I am calm, ok? I just -- I've been through worse.

Flash: Yeah? Like what?

Natalie: Oh, like being strapped to a table and your grandfather ready to cut your heart out.

Flash: Oh. Yeah, you got me beat, then. Never mind.

Natalie: Right. he's dead, so we just -- we need to calm down because we're going to get through this. Everything's going to be ok.

Flash: Yeah, you keep telling yourself that.

Marcie: (very nervous; a couple of notches below hysterical) I will. I think -- I think I'm going to tell myself that. I'm going to tell myself that over and over and over again. Everything's going to be all right. Everything's going to be all right

Antonio calls the dispatcher and wants to know if there is a black and white in the area of the diner.  He asks them to send someone to check out the diner.

In the meanwhile, Cole continues to run roughshod over the hostages at the diner.  He has stuffed their valuables in a garbage bag and then demands that Carlotta empty the cash register.  She does as he demands.

On the radio, Al as Voice of the Night: Sometimes life makes you a little desperate. Your back's against the wall so long, you think you'll never get free. That's when you got to have faith, stay strong. Believe me, you'll make it. I've been there.

Marcie tunes into Al and finds some strength in his words.

Cole: Ok, mami, let's go. (pauses and looks at the remaining hostages.) No, no, no, wait. Get in the kitchen, all of you.

Nora: What for?

Cole: Just shut up and get in there.

Marcie: Oh, God.

Flash: Calm down, calm down. It's all right, ok?

Marcie: No, no. I know what's going to happen next. This is where we all get shot, just like in "L.A. Confidential"!

Nora: Nobody's going to get shot. He's not that stupid. Nobody ever got lethal injection for committing robbery.

Cole: I'm not getting anything.

Nora: No, you're not. That's right, because you're going to take what you got already and you're going to leave here without looking back, right?

Cole: You think you got me all figured, don't you? Maybe I got other plans. Maybe I'm not leaving here by myself. Maybe there's more to this than you think.

Nora: Like what?

Cole grabs Carlotta.

Cole: Like maybe mami is coming with me.

Cole drags Carlotta to the door.  He turns toward Nora, Natalie, Marcie and Flash and says, “It’s been a real pleasure.”  He turns off the lights but then sees the flashing lights of a police car.  He demands that everyone hit the floor and hide.  A cop peeks in but sees nothing and leaves.  He calls Antonio and tells him that no one was there—doors locked, lights out.  Antonio realizes that’s not right and alerted to the fact that there is really a problem.

The situation goes from bad to worse as Carlotta starts to feel bad. She is having a hard time breathing.  Natalie rubs her arm and tries to comfort her. Nora tells Cole that she is the ADA and explains the legal realities of the situation to him.  She tries to encourage him not to escalate the situation further.  The phone rings and Cole answers and talks to Antonio.  He lets Antonio talk to Carlotta who confirms that there are hostages and Cole has a gun.  Cole then tells Antonio that unless he does what he says, Cole will kill all of the hostages.

Bo and Hank are informed about the escalating situation.

Antonio offers to come into the diner unarmed in exchange for the other hostages.  Cole turns him down.  He wants a car and $50gs in small bills.  Bo and Hank arrive at the police station and learns about Cole’s demands.  Bo tells Antonio to play along and buy time.

Meanwhile in the diner, Nora tries to finesse the situation by letting Cole know she is  equipped to assess the degree of trouble he is in.  She asks him not to do something he will regret.

Nora: You're in over your head, Mr. Cole.

Cole: You just love the sound of your own voice, don't you?

Nora: It's not too late. You're just in it for the money. You don't want to hurt anyone.

Cole: You should quit being a lawyer. You'd make a bundle being a psychic.

Nora: Don't let things get out of hand. Don't -- don't be -- let yourself get put in a position where you're forced to do something that you're going to regret for the rest of your life.

Cole: My whole life's been one big, long regret, lady. Why change now?

Marcie who is sitting in a booth with her back to Cole, whips around.

Marcie: I have to go to the bathroom.

Cole: Forget it.

Marcie: I can't. When I get scared and nervous, my bladder gets weak --

Cole: Shut up.

Marcie: I have to go to the bathroom!

The phone rings.  Cole answers it.

Cole: What is it? Talk.

Antonio: We're arranging for the $50,000 and the car. Should be here in about an hour.

Cole: Get it from the place where you guys keep all the bribe money you take.

Natalie uses Cole’s distraction to sneak behind the counter.  She grabs a metal napkin holder and squats, hidden from sight.

Cole: What, you're negotiating with me? I thought we had this all settled, Vega.

Antonio: Look, you're getting what you want. Why don't you just let one of them go?

Cole: No, no. You listen to me! You're giving me what I want, or I'll start killing them!

Cole hangs up and then goes behind the counter and gets a cup of coffee.  He looks over at Marcie.

Cole: Hey, miss I-got-to-pee, what's your name?

Marcie: (forcefully) If you let me pee, I'll tell you.

Cole: Are there any windows in the bathroom? Don't be lying to me. You got a phone?

Marcie: No.

Cole walks over to her.

Cole: Let me see.

Cole grabs Marcie’s purse and rummages through it.

Cole: All right. You can go, but don't even think about being a hero. Otherwise, I shoot mamacita. You got it?

Marcie: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I got it!

Marcie rushes away.

Cole: Where's that redhead?

Natalie emerges behind Cole with the napkin holder raised.

 Natalie: Right here.

She puts all her weight into a swing and whacks him on the side of the head with the holder.  He drops to the floor.  Flash rushes over. Nora heads to the door.

Flash: He's out.

Natalie: All right, we got to -- we got to find the gun. Where's the gun?

Nora: Ok, get the gun, but get the keys.

Flash: It's got to be somewhere underneath him.

Nora: We got to get the keys so we can get out of --

Flash: It's got to be somewhere underneath him.

Marcie rushes in and is shocked to see Cole on the floor with Flash and Natalie over him.

Marcie: Oh, my God. Did you kill him?

Natalie rolls her eyes.

Marcie rushes over to Nora, who is still standing by the door.

Marcie: I got some stuff from the bathroom.

Nora: What stuff?

Marcie: I don't know, weapon kind of stuff. (brandishes a shiny glass shard)

Nora: Jeez -- ok. Great. Perfect. Save it.

Marcie: I found it on the floor.

Nora: Ok. Just put it away for now. We'll deal with it –

Marcie rushes to put it in a safe place.

Flash: Ah -- got the keys.

Nora: Ok!

Natalie: All right. Help me turn him over.

Cole comes up with an attitude and a pointed gun.  He is really pissed now and blames Carlotta.  He threatens to shoot everyone.  Natalie taunts him and tells him to go ahead and do it.  Cole ignores Natalie and blames Carlotta for everything because she called Antonio when it was suppose to be a simple score.  Carlotta yells back at him but then collapses.  Everyone begs Cole to let one of them call for a doctor.  He finally relents and Troy is sent in to assess the medical situation. He tells them that Carlotta might have had a heart attack. Natalie realizes that Cole is in pain from the blow to the head.  She signals Nora who signals Troy that they should pretend to offer Cole something for his pain.  Troy substitutes a sedative for the aspirin. Antonio calls and Cole once again demands his money. Antonio puts Cole’s mother on who begs him to give up and let the hostages go. He hangs up but then calls Antonio and tells him that he is wasting his time using his mom.  He wants the money and a car.  Cole takes the pills Troy has given him believing they are aspirin.

May 20

Setup: At the diner, everyone tries to talk Cole into letting Carlotta go to the hospital. Al as Voice of the Night: We never know how much we can stand until we're right up against it. Sometimes the things that scare us look so big, we need somebody there to remind us how strong we really are.

Everyone continues to try to talk Cole into letting Carlotta go to the hospital. Antonio calls and Cole tells him he is sending mother out.  Troy and Carlotta leave.  Cole calls Bo and demands his car and the money again.  Bo asks to speak to one of the hostages and Cole lets him talk to Nora.  Bo tells Nora that Cole’s weakness is his mother and she should work on that angle.

At the radio station, Al is worried because he hasn’t heard from Marcie.

Al: Yo, Slick, did Marcie Walsh call?

Man: Not yet.

Al: Listen, she was supposed to stop by. So if she does call, please let me know?

Man: Sure thing.

Al: Ok.

Al as Voice of the Night: Wherever you are tonight, you're not alone. Al: There's somebody out there thinking about you. And, hey, maybe you're thinking about them, too. and maybe that thought will help you make it through the night.

Marcie finds comfort in Al’s message.

Cole begins to feel spacey and thinks that maybe he was drugged instead of just giving him aspirins. He is livid.

Flash: So -- um -- so what are you going to do?

Cole: You're the one who tried to put me to sleep. So now you're going to keep me up. Tell me a story.

Natalie: You got to be kidding.

Cole: Come on, big mouth. Spill your guts.

Natalie: Ok, here's a good one -- how about this psychopath named Cole Avery walks into a diner one day?

Cole: No. Not you. her. I'm waiting.

Flash: You don't have to tell him anything.

Marcie: How about a -- a pot of coffee?

Cole: Now, make it.

Natalie: I'll help.

Cole: No, no, no. (points to Marcie) You do it. I'm waiting.

Nora: All right. um -- about a week after my divorce from my first husband became final, I found out I was pregnant.

Cole: Was it his?

Nora: Yes. Only I didn't know how to tell him, and I wasn't sure how I felt about it myself.

Cole: So you got rid of it? Some folks would say that makes you a murderer.

Nora: I had a miscarriage. I just kept wondering what it would've been like. I -- I thought it was a boy. I wonder what he would've been like, and I know I would've loved him because mothers do that, you know. They love their children, even when they do big, awful things.

Marcie splashes the hot coffee as she sets the cup on the counter and burns her hand.  She cries out in pain and then rushes back to the booth.

Natalie: Marcie, are you ok?

Flash: Are you all right?

Marcie: Yeah, I'm okay. I'm okay.

Cole: (points to Marcie) All right, you talk.

Marcie: Huh?

Natalie: Why don't you just lay off of her?

Cole: Why don't you just shut up and sit down.

Flash: So lame. This is just so --

Nora: It's ok. Go ahead. Tell us about your mother.

Cole: Yeah. The worst thing that ever happened.

Nora: Stories about your mother -- they can only make you feel better when you're afraid.

Cole: You had your turn.

Marcie: I was an accident.

Cole: Hmm.

Natalie: I'm sure somebody just told that to you, Marcie.

Marcie: No, I heard my aunt and my dad talking about it.

Flash: So what? That doesn't make you a bad person.

Marcie: Well, that's not the bad part. My mom died when I was a baby. They said that having me was too much for her. So thanks to the big mistake, she –

Marcie cries. Nora gets up to comfort her but Cole won’t allow it.

Cole: Sit.

Natalie: Marcie, you didn't make it happen.

Marcie: Um -- not on purpose. You know, it's weird, though. Nobody wanted me, but I'm still here. And my mom, the one everybody loved -- well – (hangs head and cries)

Nora: No, that's not true. Your mother loved you, and she wanted you. Mothers love their children very, very much.

Cole: Ok, redhead. It's your turn.

Natalie: Skip me, okay?

Nora: No, go ahead, Natalie. Nothing you say is going to leave this room.

Natalie: Roxy used to leave me alone a lot when I was little.

Marcie: How little?

Natalie: Little. She was always at the bars, doing whatever she did, except for when she was hung-over.

Nora: Go on, Natalie.

Natalie: Well -- there's just this one night. I mean, there was this really, really bad storm, and the electricity went out, and it was pitch-black. And there was this tree outside that kept scraping on the house, and it -- it sounded like this monster was trying to scratch its way in, you know?

Cole: Aren't you a little old for monsters, honey?

Natalie: Do you want to hear this or not? Anyway -- it wouldn't have mattered, I mean, Roxy being there. She just would've threatened to feed me the monster if I didn't do the dishes.

Marcie: That's horrible.

Natalie: Yeah, well, I didn't know that mothers were supposed to protect you until I met Viki.

Cole walks behind Flash.

Cole: What about you, Madonna? I bet you got a lot to be ashamed of.

Flash: Funny. I broke up with a guy (pause) over an abortion.

Marcie: (shocked) What did you do?

Natalie: Marcie --

Flash: I got pregnant, and I wanted my music to come first. So I got an abortion and I never talked to the guy about it. He found out afterwards, and he couldn't forgive me. I'm sorry that I did it the way that I did it. I tried calling him over and over again, and he kept hanging up. He said that -- that I was dead to him.

Nora: (reaches across the table and holds Flash’s hands) Funny, isn't it? Here I am talking about a child I wish I'd known, and some of you are talking about mothers you wish you'd known. I guess that's what it comes down to, doesn't it -- mothers and children.

Cole: Shut up. Story time is over.

Nora turns her head so Cole cannot see her and smirks.

Later, Cole is looking out of the door.  Flash still sitting across from Nora in a booth catches her eye.

Flash: I think the pills are starting to work.

Cole walks over to where Marcie is sitting.

Cole: All right, you. Get some more damn coffee.

Marcie rushes from the booth and goes behind the counter. She get the coffee carafe but then drops it.  It shatters.

Cole: You idiot!

Nora: Marcie --

Marcie: (terrified) Please --

Nora: Are you all right?

Cole points the gun at Marcie.

Cole: I ought to just shoot you right here!

Marcie: Oh, no, please don't shoot me! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to do it!

Nora: Come here, come here. It's all right.

Marcie rushes from around the counter and goes to Nora, who hugs her tightly.

Flash: The hell it is. This guy has no idea what he's doing here!

Nora: Why don't you --

Cole: Shut up!

Nora: Let her go? Let her go. You have absolutely no use for a hysterical woman. Call commissioner Buchanan. It's not too late to make a deal.

Cole: I'm not giving up.

Nora: You don't have to give up. Make a trade, then. I know. Get -- have your mother sent in in exchange for Marcie.

Cole: You shut up about my mother.

Nora: No, really, Mr. Cole. You know you're going to have to disappear. if you ever want to say goodbye to your mother, this may be your last chance.

Cole agrees to send Marcie out in exchange for a chance to see his mother.  Viki asks Bo to let her accompany Mrs. Avery to the door and oversee the exchange.  Bo agrees reluctantly.  Cole tells Marcie to go but she hesitates.  She doesn’t want to leave the others but Nora tells her to go.  She does.  Mrs. Avery comes in but so does Viki.

Marcie rushes into the control booth at the radio station where Al is doing the show.  When he sees her he breaks flops back in his chair and exhales loudly.

Al: Oh, thank God you're here.

Al jumps up and puts his hands on her shoulders.

Al: When you called, I had no idea. You must be so terrified.

Marcie: I'm okay, but, you know, the others are still in there and I want to help, but I can't think of anything. I don't know what to do.

Al: Ok. I got an idea. Sit down.

Marcie sits in his chair and he kneels next to her and talks into the microphone while holding onto her arm.  He pulls her closer to him.

Al as Voice of the Night: You may be scared of what you're facing right now. You may even be wondering if you're going to make it through to tomorrow in one piece. You can do it. Just take the hand of the person next to you, hold on tight, and remind each other you're not alone.

Antonio manages to slip into the diner through a vent.  He confronts Cole.  The remaining hostages flee.  Cole and Antonio square off.  Antonio wins.

At the radio station, Al is standing by the console.  He snaps his cell phone shut.  Marcie looks at him anxiously.

Al: That was the newsroom. The hostages have been freed, and they just picked up that guy, Cole Avery. He was arrested.

Marcie: Oh, my – (grins and then throws herself into his arms.)

They hug, separate slightly and then kiss passionately.

This was described by TPTB as Marcie & Al first "real" kiss!  And it was primo!  Such passion! WOW! Sigh.
